#2 of Cousin Amber

And we get to how she was used in the actual combat situations and why she feels so unfulfilled. Originally the trio were there because of a fear on if she got captured and mind-controlled to work against them, but as i started plotting out to the end I came up with a much better reason why they were treating her as they did, even if it isn't mentioned here.

Amber takes a deep breath and then opens the eye in the center of her forehead wide open, "The third eye is open," she speaks the incantation required to fully activate her ability and expand her awareness of everything around her. Not only that, she can also tap into the minds of everyone else on the squad and give them a lesser effect of her ability to use. It's not as strong and can only go up to about a couple of seconds out, less with more people to divide her efforts, but the advantage of knowing what would happen even one second in advance can be huge. It'd mean knowing where anyone is planning to strike and being able to affect that before they do. Amber's own ability is still stronger, but her concentration at maintaining it on everyone else means she can only usually see about twenty to thirty seconds. And this gets to be her entire contribution to the mission. Get people to the disaster then just sit on the sidelines and give everyone a one second insight into the future. Occasionally as the need arises she can use her other ability to jump to someone's location and teleport them to somewhere else they're needed. And everyone's been trained well enough to recognize when she's about to do just that. But beyond that and despite the fact they still require her to practice close quarters combat daily, that's as far as she's allowed to really participate.

Their entire group is highly specialized and only used in the manner that is most efficient and effective for that person's talents. Amber is most useful acting to help coordinate the actions of others, moving them if needed but mainly just getting them to the scene and then giving them access to a second into the future. Having her actually fight would potentially reduce the squad's efficiency and so Amber gets to spend the entire fight practically just standing on top of a building, watching as all of the others do all of the work. And as that can be somewhat boring she spends some time trying to find her three favorite people. She doesn't actually know their real names, but since her group won't officially acknowledge that the three are there Amber has simply taken to calling them Larry, Curly and Moe. Moe is currently missing, though given what she knows of his habits he's probably had to go run off to the bathroom again. The other two are about where she'd expect them to be. At first it had come as a shock to find them there, and took a while to try and find them afterwards. But since then she's had plenty of practice figuring out where they tend to try and set up. To be perfectly honest she's kind of surprised that they were able to beat her here considering it is a hundred miles away from their base. But the three were probably sent here as soon as the situation seemed to develop while the higher ups began to discuss if their group was needed or not. It is sometimes the case that when something shows up that immediate action is required that she won't be able to find them until the end. The most annoying part of them Is that they're only there for her.

The three of them are everywhere she is expected to be. Occasionally there will be a new one, but it's always three and they only ever act if she were to act out. At first she was confused by their presence, but by this point they're just insulting and shows a complete lack of understanding to her abilities. Not that it really matters much. She really isn't even needed in this particular engagement. She's really nothing more of a chauffeur. Her ability, though definitely useful, isn't required. They are skilled enough on their own to not have much chance of failure. Her third eye only really just serves to provide a safety net for the team, to make it so that the risk is practically eliminated. And she's not allowed to participate in any other way. As a result she doesn't really pay much attention to the fight unfolding beneath her, only on how miserable she is. She sees one situation where Jet is needed to intercept an attack from one of their targets and teleports to his location. Since he can see her coming he takes a deep breath and readies himself as she grabs him and teleports again. Short ranged teleports really aren't that much of an issue. Being unable to breathe for a fraction of a second doesn't even phase them.

And then it was back to her perch and doing nothing else but watch the clouds for all the use she was for them. By the time they're starting to wrap things up she sees Moe has finally arrived and taken his position. All three of her snipers are now poised to try and kill her if she were to step out of line. But there's no real need for that and once everything has been taken care of and all of the villains properly apprehended and contained she's able to relax and let her third eye close and then jump down to the others and wait for the helicopter to take them back to the base where they would then go back to their routine of making sure they're in top shape and ready to go. But not, of course, before going through a briefing where a bunch of analysts who have never had to actually engage in any sort of fight will go about and critique every action each of them made and give advice on how to improve. An organization that prides itself on operating like a well-oiled machine that can take care of any threat that they come across. It just also treats its members as little more than gears to make sure that machine runs smoothly. To the higher ups they aren't people. They're just tools. And Amber doesn't really feel like being just a tool anymore.

And as they begin to make their way back to the base she finally settles on the decision that she feels must be made, regardless of any consequences that it may end up bringing on her. When she gets back to the base she goes through the standard debriefing. Not much is said to her since she really never really did anything that entire fight and they didn't really expect her to anyway. So instead she used much of the debriefing writing out her letter and then once the meeting was over and she was left to her own devices for a little while she sent the letter, packed up her things and went up to the roof of the building to await their response. It wasn't all that long in coming and to their credit they didn't send an entire military unit after her, only the group's counsellor. Amber nods a bit of acknowledgement to the woman as she continues to dangle her feet off the building, the control ring currently on her finger. Amber taps her hand against the side of the building right next to her. The counsellor approaches, but is a bit too reluctant to actually get to the edge. Which is to say she would have been perfectly fine. If she did somehow fall Amber would have caught her long before she made it to the ground. But she also isn't going to hold it against the woman for not wanted to be close to heights anyway.

"I'm guessing you're not here to help escort me out of the building," Amber says.

"You know full well that they will not agree to simply let you walk off without any notice."

"Why not? We're not military. We're not tools," Amber says that last part a bit more forcefully for emphasis, knowing full well that this is being recorded. "We're employees. I've read through the contracts they had me sign a while back. It specifically states that either side can choose to end the arrangement at any time."

"You should at least wait long enough for us to find a replacement for you on the team," she says.

"Three cars and two injuries."

"What?"

"Other than being a chauffeur that's the entirety of my contribution. If I wasn't there, if I had never used my abilities to assist people, three cars more would have been destroyed in the past month and two more people would have been injured. I'm not actually needed. I'm nothing more than a taxi service and a safety net. And the way you people operate I'm not allowed to ever do anything more than that."

"I wouldn't say that, exactly."

Amber stays silent for a moment, staring out over the city. Finally she takes a deep breath and sighs. "You should really have Moe go and see a doctor about his problem," Amber speaks up, confusing the other person by the statement. Amber turns and stares at the counsellor for a moment, trying to get a read on her. "They haven't exactly given me their names, but you have three snipers on me so I've been calling them the three stooges."

"We don't have any snipers on you," the woman begins.

"You know, at first I understood, because I was just some young immature kid and a serious risk if I was ever captured. At this point it's really just insulting. Larry, Curly and Moe," Amber points at where all three are positioned, though Moe is currently absent again. "Like I said, Moe really should go have that bladder issue looked at, he has to take a break to use his facilities far too often. As for Curly, he's by far the least threatening of the three of them, at least ever since he broke up with his girlfriend two weeks ago. His aim has just never been the same."

"But they have never made any shots against you or anyone else. How would you even be aware of that kind of information? You've never been recorded to have enhanced vision to that degree before."

"You do know what my power is, right? Like I said, at this point it's mainly an insult. My ability allows me to see into the future. You all know I can do this. You all know I can see at least two minutes into the future or else the long-range teleports would not work. At which point why do you guys think that I wouldn't be able to use that window to find out if anyone has a shot on me, especially since I have nothing to actively do most engagements. And more importantly, why the fuck do you guys think a sniper would even work on me?"

The other person is clearly uncomfortable about the situation, indicating part of their job was probably to decide whether or not the snipers to take a shot at her. Amber takes a deep breath and sighs.

"Am I a prisoner here?" Amber asks.

"No," they answer.

"But I have handed in my resignation. I am not military, so if I am not a prisoner then I am free to go. Powers or not I still have rights. To be perfectly blunt I think the only way you could actually prevent me from getting away would be to send Amethyst after me. But realize that right now we're setting a precedent. If I am allowed to leave then that means that we are truly considered to be the people you assure us we are to you. If you try to stop me, you let a bunch of really powerful people know that their own government considers them as slaves and tools only. So I want you to think on that," Amber says before grabbing her equipment.

Amber then stands up with her luggage and with a slight nod jumps off the building. As an instinctive response the woman rushes forward to see if Amber's all right. But not even halfway down Amber suddenly disappears as she teleports herself directly to the ground. Any window the woman had for ordering the snipers to fire has completely evaporated and she stands awkwardly trying to decide what to tell her superiors. Amber, however, was currently making full use of her ability and actually after teleporting a block away goes back up to the top of a nearby building. Not entirely sure if it's just the result of how they trained her but Amber has always felt more comfortable navigating a somewhat crowded area by teleporting form rooftop to rooftop. It's generally a lot easier to see long distances this way and is also far less likely to end up teleporting right on top of someone. And if she can't see it perfectly, all she needs to do is aim a few feet above.

A few miles away from the base Amber stops for a moment and sits down on the edge of the building. She takes a deep breath and just enjoys the sensation of being free for the first time in her entire life. To be able to just relax, knowing that the three stooges are nowhere close just waiting for her to make a wrong move. She doesn't know how they will respond. She's sure they'll probably do something about it. Best to play it safe and conservative until she knows what they're going to do and not get her hopes up just yet. But for now, she's free to enjoy her freedom. And her first order of business is to go and get a bucket of ice cream, maybe order a pizza and go rent a motel room for the day. Best not to go about trying to set plans too far ahead until she knows what kind of response they're going to have. And if they are going to have a response it'll probably be in the next twenty-four hours.
