A short story for our dystopian times

And it came to pass, in the spring of the year 2020 on the old calendar, that a great plague swept from nation to nation across the planet. It spread quickly, and was easily transmitted, yet difficult at first to detect. Carriers of the viral infection proved to sometimes show no symptoms at all, or at least to show none for weeks after becoming contagious. There was no vaccine against this new virus, and no definite cure in sight. Not all who fell ill to it perished, but the death toll was still staggeringly high. The only sure defense seemed to be to stay home, in isolation, to avoid contagion. Many huddled fearfully in their homes, hoping it would not reach them. Others foolishly partied or prayed in large groups, spreading the contagion. Madmen at both political extremes denied scientific and medical evidence, and voiced insane conspiracy theories. Some factions used the plague as an excuse for racism, bigotry, or economic rapacious actions, preying upon the weak. Others gave up all hope, fearing, or in some cases hoping, that this was the end of humanity.

And then, a few brave members of our kind came out of the shadows, risking exposure and persecution, to extend a clawed hand in friendship, offering salvation. "Join us," they said. "We have overcome our aggression, and channeled it into strength. We know no fear, no despair. We will not harm you. Come, join us as we howl to mourn the many who have passed, and strive to rebuild. Join the pack, because werewolves and other lycanthropes are immune to the plague."

Excerpt from, "History of the Lycan Nation", by Katherine Fox, of the Pacific Coastal Fox Clan, in the Lycan Nation.

Author's note: We live in a dystopic time. A time that sounds like overblown fiction. But do not give up hope. Stay home, stay safe, and listen to the medical authorities. Do not give in to mindless fear, despair, or anger. Many more people have had the disease and survived, than have died from it. The cost may be high, especially if fools refuse to limit contact with others. But we, as a race, will survive.
