I have my earbuds in when I here my mother sweetly say "Honey, are you asleep?" I ignore her, and continue drawing. My picture is of a girl I see. In my dreams. I don't know her, but I see her in the distance behind a tree or hidden behind the tall, lengthy grass. My mother shakes my leg gently as I feel the car jerk into the driveway of our "new" house. "Hon, we're here! Wake up!" She says way to energetically. "Uggg. Please, tell me this is a joke? And someone is going to jump out and say 'YOU GOT PUNKED!!'? Right?" I say, groaning and reluctantly get out of the car. It's even worse than I thought it to be. " Mommy! I WANT OUT!" Violet yells, whining. "Yes, honey. Give me a minute." My mother says, wearily. She has been staying up all day to take care of my little sister, Violet. And then at night she has to go to work at her job. But since my "Step dad" came back from the war, she's had to do even more work. See, I used to just be able to make my own dinner and mom make Violets and hers. But, now that Allen's back, she has to make hers, Allen's, Violets, and mine! Not to mention, that she has to feed all the pets. Which are Eclipse and Snowball. Eclipse is Mom and Allen's dog and Snowball is Violets bunny. I have a pet to, but I take care of her. She is a black cat named Mysterious. And on her collar is a pendant, a Tai Chi symbol. I looked it up once. It means Heaven, Earth and People. Which is good, I guess. But, the thing is, she is so protective of that thing, she freaks out if I even try to touch it! When I get out of the car, I get the full view of the house and the yard. The ominous house is like a bad dream. No, scratch that, a nightmare. The grass is tall and lengthy and seems to be running from some horrible creature but, somehow, is trapped in one place. Maybe it's running from the house, which i'm calling Shadow House. "WHOA! Mommy! We're staying in a haunted house?! YAY!" Violet shouts. She loves scary stuff. For whatever reason. My concern is that she is a 6 and 1/2 year old kid who loves horror movies that involve people dying! Yeah, you can see where I'm coming from. And what is even more concerning is that she has killed a bunch of stuff. A frog from the pond at our old house. A rat from our old house. And even a snake! Which was a Northern Red-belly snake. We used to live in Flat-Cliff, Maine. "No, Snuggle-Bunny! This is our house. Isn't it nice?" Allen says. Allen is my step dad. But, I said I would never call him dad, even if he adopts me. Which, will never happen as long as my real dad is alive. Mom says that Allen is my real dad because he takes care of me. She says he feeds me, clothes me, and helps me. But, the way I see it, he will never be my real dad. Because he was not there to see my birth and did not see me grow up. So, he will never truly be my dad. In my opinion. "Mom, can we, like, just stay in a hotel while you check out the house, and when you don't like it.." I say but I am interrupted by mom. "If." She says, easily. Which I don't know how she even says that with a stern face. "Can I continue?" I say. She nods her head as if to say "This better be a compromise." Which it is. "K, thank you." I say, kind of annoyed. "As I was saying, if, you don't like the house, you sell it, we move back to main, move back into our house in main!" I say, excited. Because, well, I know for a fact that mom is going to detest the house and we will move back to main! "Mommy! I don't want to leave Haunted House! She blows my hair around! And says funny things!" Violet yells. "Snuggle-Bunny, did you fall asleep in the car?" Allen chuckles a little but stops when he hears her reaction. "NO! I was awake and heard you say that it's in the middle of the school year! And you don't want to risk the possible, possibly..." Violet yells, before her eyes close and she falls asleep in Allen's arm. "Aw, poor Snuggle-Bunny. So tired from the long trip. Plus her mood, she just fell asleep." Allen says. He's the only one who calls her Snuggle-Bunny. I call her Itsy because she likes the itsy-bitsy spider. Mom calls her Tootsie-Bear. Grammie calls her China-Doll. Pop calls her Viola. It starts to sprinkle and then it lets go like a bucket. Mom grabbed the umbrella as quick as possible and put it over Violets head. Then, we rush inside and see the interior of the Shadow House.
