Cookie of Chances (Otherwise Untitled)
#210 of Short Stories
A meerkat bakes.
~ The meerkat gazed into the oven, and despaired. The baking pan, now somehow tarnished to a soft blue tint from the heat, bore a dozen objects that she'd hoped would become cookies during their time therein.
~ More than half of them were now crunched and burnt, cracks cutting deeply across their widths to spread into branching lacerations.
~ Most of the remaining half appeared to have, by some unknown and arcane mechanism, melted.
~ Amidst the sea of failed bakery, a single cookie appeared to have formed from dough. It shimmered softly in the heat of the oven, and the meerkat knew it was a trap.
