Chapter 8

Bad to Worse

I pulled the machine gun that was stowed in my bergen. Extending the bipod, and loading a double drummed clip in; I set up on some sandbags that the BLA had set up. Trey and Nina had done the same; setting up their HK XM8 rifles. The BLA could only come from one direction, forward. With stunning accuracy we would be able to take them down with ease. For five minutes we crouched there; looking though our scopes, waiting for the impending attack.

It was hard to think that this area, the most populated city in all of Ocea, was turned into a war zone. For five minutes we saw nothing, and then it happened. We heard a deep rumbling noise, then high pitch squeal; we jumped to the ground as a mortar shell landed less then 15 feet from us. It slammed into the ground; ripping up the earth and tossing it into the air. Asphalt and concrete chunks rained down on us and then we heard three more deep rumbling sound.

"We gotta get outta here!" I shouted; knowing very well that these shells would not miss their intended target.

With our rifles at our side and one hand over our heads we ran from the plaza outside the office building. Just as we left the blast range of the rockets, three mortars plummeted to the ground; tearing up the area that we were just in.

"Eagle 19! Eagle 19! Are you there?!" Trey shouted into the coms.

"Eagle 19 here, we are taking heavy machine gun fire and have taken a many rounds." The pilot said.

"Eagle 19! We need top cover ASAP! We are under heavy rocket fire!" Trey ordered.

"Negative, Red 3. We are taking very heavy fire from several rooftop machine gun nests.... FUCK!... Eagle 19, we have lost our starboard engine." The pilot shouted, distress clearly evident in his voice.

"Eagle 19, Bail out! Get the fu-" Trey shouted

"MAYDAY! MAYDAY! Eagle 19 is going down. Repeat. We are going down!" The pilot shouted.

Then we saw her. The Eagle rocketed over us, flames and smoke trailing from her starboard engine. Then there was a clatter of machine gun fire and a loud explosion. We stared in horror as a pillar of smoke rose over the top of a nearby warehouse.

"Jesus Christ!" I uttered in shock.

"Holy shit!" Trey exclaimed. "They're de-"

Trey then jumped between Nina and me, wrapping his arms around our necks, bringing us to the ground. Milliseconds later bullets whizzed over our heads. The three of us crawled to the door of another office building; taking a temporary cover in there.

"Okay..." I said taking deep breaths, "What the fuck do we do?"

Trey and Nina shrugged their shoulders. "We gotta fight." Trey said, "There's no other way to look at it. If we don't, we die."

"Okay. Nina, call for an emergency evac. Tell them that we have been ambushed, Eagle 19 is down, and that we are taking fire." I said.

She nodded and began talking on the com. Trey and I checked our weapons to make sure they hadn't been damaged. Then we heard the sound of an engine; a civilian Jeep drove slowly past, a 50 cal. machine gun mounted on the back. I nodded to Trey, this was our ride. We cocked our guns, jumped up and slashed the muzzles through the window, sending glass shard flying as we opened fire.

We took them by surprise; their facial expressions said so. The driver and gunner convulsed violently as the bullets slammed into their chests. The gunner fell off the jeep completely, and the driver fell forward, his head thumping against the steering wheel.

"C'mon Nina we got some wheels." I shouted.

She obediently got up and grabbed her gun. We walked cautiously to the Jeep, not wanting be hit by machine gun fire. We reached the doors and quickly opened them and jumped in. I floored the accelerator before the doors were even shut. I saw some BLA units up ahead, they began to fire, and I made a sharp right turn, almost flipping the Jeep as we rounded the corner on two of the four wheels.

I couldn't believe it; this simple mission had turned to disaster just because the command room had misplaced a couple of zeros. I was hoping that our airlift would be there when we reached the extraction point. For an unknown reason I felt uneasy; a lot just wasn't adding up. The wrong intel, ten times as many insurgents as what was reported, no response when we called for help, and at the top... I knew that I had seen Fitch before I came to Alpha... the question was where...

I shook my head, pushing out such thoughts; I had to stay focused. In the back Trey and Nina looked through their sights; keeping a sharp eye for any BLA hostiles. It was pretty calm, then the shit hit the fan. Four explosions went off in the middle of the road and I jerked the steering wheel to the side to avoid going right into the ditch. The Jeeps right wheels left the ground, going past the point of no return. The Jeep rolled over a total of five times, bouncing down the road.

I groaned; I was hanging upside-down. Taking out my knife I cut through the seatbelt and fell to the roof. I looked through the shattered glass; ten BLA soldiers were descending on us.

"Trey, Nina. Are you alright?" I said, setting up my rifle.

There was no response. I cursed under my breath. Lying down, I took aim at the soldier's feet, as that was all I could see. They were about fifteen feet from the Jeep when I opened fire. The bullets torn through their feet and legs, and they fell to the ground, right into the line of fire. More bullets slammed into their chest as they fell. Once they were all dead, I had gone through half a drum, fifty rounds.

I began to crawl out, nosing my gun muzzle outside. Most of my gun was outside as I slowly crawled out, then a heavy boot descended on the muzzle; snapping the bipod and pining my gun firmly to the ground. Then the man behind the boot cam into view. Crouching down; he aimed his pistol at my head.

He chuckled menacingly, "Well, hello there, Chiricov..."
