Angel is the daughter of the Cosaint Eliza Icethorn and the Oclasian Darkan Chino. Like all Liathians, Angel was feared from birth. Liath infants can have no control over the Demonic strength they gain from their Oclasian side, or the Angelic righteousness they receive from their Cosaintian parent.
As a Grey Child, Angel was always closely watched by her parents, who feared that the power she received from their union - her Lasair - would go out of control and end up destroying the neutral city of Senano where they resided. However, because Angel was never an unhappy child, she never released her powers and grew with them fading slowly as she entered her teenage years. The Lasair, an inner ember which is formed from a Cosaint and Oclasian's power fused together, is normally uncontrollable when a Grey Child is of the age of 3-12.
Angel remained with her family in Senano, when the ruler of the Council of Maith declared Darkan a traitor and Eliza a whore, Angel's mother was executed and she and her father had to go into hiding when she was 16.
On the eve of Angel's birthday, The Day occurred. The Oclasian ruler - a dragon controlled by evil energy forces from the cosmos - declared war upon the Cosaints and those who supported them...even if their residence was neutral. Angel and Darkan had always disagreed with the Oclasian law, and led a revolt against the Oclasians and the Council of Maith in the early hours of The Day. Senano was invaded, and Darkan killed along with many other innocents. Angel, however, survived.
A group of Bailean Healers found the unconscious Liath beneath a half-shattered pillar of what had been the Maithian Ministry. The Bailean Healers concluded that Angel had severe amnesia and that she was not dangerous as her Lasair was extinguished. They went forward to set her up into the swordsmanship school for girls named Sword & Cross which also had a dormitory. The Bailean Prince allowed her in for free considering her health issues.
Soon, Angel began to feel out of place and scared, namely from the looks she was given. Angel did not know she was a Liath, not Cosaintian. For three months she was on the run from Oclasians, and from these experiences she learnt to fight, catching the eye of the Prince of Baile - Kearney Ulleium. Kearney had previously been evacuated from Baile in an attempt to make sure that if King Adrugoll and Queen Searlotta died, an heir would remain. However the Prince did not like the idea of leaving his kingdom alone. He had secretly been watching Angel, and one day saved her then his infatuation with her grew to become love.
After Angel was invited but disallowed to be at a Cosaintian ball, Kearney disguised as the Spectre stood in her defence, and the King declared an alliance with the Liath race. Angel does not yet know that she and the small group of Liathians who were captured by the Oclasians who invaded the ball are the only ones in what is left in the ruined Earth.
Note: A Liath is half Oclasian, half Cosaint. Cosaint is good, Oclasian is evil, thereby making Angel kind of half angel half demon.
