C H A P T E R 1: Dreaming of Red Poppies

=========

The Last thing I remember was falling, falling and thinking of the pain when I finally hit the bottom of this black abyss. Thoughts of my death, and thoughts of those I'd leave behind, flowed through my mind.

Then again, I had wished such a fate upon myself.

As I think back, it all started just as the dawn starts the new day, normal enough. I saw yet again I was alone in bed, my girlfriend gone, most likely off to work. I had thought back to all the evening prior and the joy I had when she said she would consider my proposal of marriage. However, something just didn't feel right. I went to the kitchen shrugging it off, grabbing a bowl from the dish cabinet, and cereal from the pantry. When I went to the fridge for the milk, I noticed a single piece of paper tacked to the front of the normally note cluttered fridge.

The handwriting was my girlfriends, and taped to it was a key.

The key to our apartment...

I read the note with dread, and at first I couldn't grasp what had been written, at first I grew angry, but eventually broke down to tears and cried. The note in its own simplicity, broke off four years of complete devotion and beautiful memories. All because she didn't want to say no to marriage, straight to my face.

I forgot about the cereal, and went straight to the shower, in hopes of washin away the pain I felt. However, it seems the cruel fates had not finished with me.

As much as I had wanted to call out of work that day, I needed the money. When I got a nasty look from my supervisor, I wished I had called out.

It turned out that important research had gone missing, and claimed it was my fault. In being my fault, he made it my task to redo weeks of research in a single day, or my job would be going to someone more competant.

I knew exactly who he claimed to be more competant, his own son. I began to believe he like to do these things on purpose so his son could take my place. I had only barely managed to get this job by scoring 5 points higher on an entry exam.

I was dismissed to preform my task, and eventually found my way to the library I had originally found documents relating to the research my supervisors team was working on. Something related to smashing atoms and particles, something I didn't really care for. Good pay, and a great job if I didn't end up being his assistant.

Now the Library, that is something that interests me. A gorgeous sight and an excellent example of post-modern architecture. I made my way to one of the lower levels in the older wing of the library. Most of the information I found there. As it was when I first started looking here, the place was pretty deserted, something about the place being haunted by an old librarian. I felt it was more because it stank of wet moldy science books.

After what seemed like hours, I finally found the filing cabinet with the last article I needed. The familiar tone of my cellphone ringing left me scrambling for my backpack and phone, though I ended up having to listen to a voicemail anyways. According to the message, the original research data had been found, having been mistaken for a report and sent to a different department.

I can honestly say I sighed in dismay, thinking what a waste of a day. Moving back to the filing cabinet, I misjudged how close I actually was to the drawer smacking my arm smartly.

Completely annoyed, I said under my breath," I wish I were someplace else right now..."

At that same exact moment, the drawer suddenly stuck fast, as I attempted to close it. I pulled it out and tried again, with similar results.

Maybe it was just the things I had gone through that day, or whatever, I lost my cool, and fast. I started smashing my full weight into the file cabinet drawer.

Unbeknownst to me, each time I hit the cabinet, the wall behind it began to form large cracks.

When my anger hadn't been sated by the lack of progress, I kicked the cabinet, and the wall was not able to withstand this final action. It shattered like glass, and the cabinet fell into the darkness beyond.

Initially my reaction was complete surprise, the words," Oh Shit..." exlaimed loudly. I panicked, and I felt like I needed to get the heck out of the library, because I certainly was not going to pay to repair it.

However, I was overwhelmed with a sense of curiousity, why was there a room behind that wall?

I began to move closer to the hole in the wall and rationalized entering the room, beliving that I might've uncovereed something important and would gain immense fame and glory. That was really all I needed to convince myself to go into the room.

Upon entering the room, I noticed something was off, realizing that the filing cabinet I had caused to fall into the room was missing. In walking around and trying to locate it, it took me a moment to realize the room was growing steadly dimmer. Turning I gasped in horror to see the wall was reforming!

I ran in hopes of making it through, but it was in vain. I smacked in to a very solid surface.

Pushing myself away from the wall I started to really panic, thinking to myself," How in the hell am I going to get out of here?!" I began to shiver in fear, afraid something else was in the room with me, and in a sense I wasn't all wrong.

A sudden glint of blue light started to illuminate the opposite wall. It seamed like an outline, and I immediately thought to myself it must be a door. Walking over to it, quickly dashed my hopes as I saw the light came from stange runes along the frame of what appeared to be a mirror.

I was in awe wondering how the runes were illuminated, when I noticed something awkward about the frame.

"The mirror is opaque?" I whispered., unsure of what to make of it. I felt compelled to touch the mirror, and to my surprise it gave like water, and rippled from the point I touched.

The runes suddenly glowed brightly, and vein like tendrils of blue light spread towards the center of the mirror. Gazing in wonder, I was suddenly shocked to see a face form in the center of the mirror.

"|| .||..| |||.|||.| ||||.|| ||.|| ||.|" The face announced , the language completely alien to me.

Confused I immediately responded," I don't understand?"

The Face did nothing for a moment, and then disappeared back into the black surface of the mirror.

"Hey...Wait!" I called out moving even close to the mirror.

This is apparently what the mirror creature wanted, fbecause as soon as I was closer, black tendrils of darkness sprang forth from the mirror and immediately wrappped around me and began to slowly drag me closer to the dark surface of the mirror.

"You desire to leave this world?" A voice rang in my head.

Screaming I tried to struggle with the tendrils as my body began to get pushed into the liquidy surface of the mirror.

"Then you shall be sent back to the other world..." the voice continued.

My Mind was overwhelmed with sense and when the voice said that I was confused, I wanted to ask what it meant, I wanted it to let me go, but it was useless as I was fully drawn in, and began my fall.

I have been on this descent for awhile now, and I cannot seem to keep myself awake. As I feel my thoughts fading, my only remaining one is, did I really wish for this?

The blackness soon fades with his lapse into unconciousness, and the scenery soon changes from that of the purest of darkness to that of early dawn. The land previously blanketed in darkness begins to glow with a lsuh green glow.

In a city floating in the sky not far away, an alarm blares as a group of cowled individuals quickly gather in front of a large monitor. One of them, a male in a lsky blue robe, waves their covered hand over an orb, and the screen changes to a person falling through the sky.

"A human?!" he exclaims in surprise," Hurry summon..."

"Wait!" a female wearing a red robe interrupts," Something is different about this one.. can't you feel it?"

Not responding for a moment, the blue robed man suddenly gasps," What!? A humant isn't capable..."

"I know... send 'Her' to investigate...."

"Yes, magistrix!"

As the group rushes out, one stays behind. A curiously black robed male with golden threadwork through out his robes. He reaches into one sleeve and pulls out an orb and quickly smashes it on the ground.

Watching it almost curiously, it immediately reforms into a brighly glowing wisp.

"So the prophecy beings..." grinning, he walks out of the room, the wisp following.

In the skies a white robed woman flies, black wings flowing from her back. She spots the human target she had been sent to investigate. Plunging quickly she grabs hold of him and glides to a clearing, a large field.

Setting the the human on the ground she turns him over, a blood red dagger appearing in her hand and she slices the back of his shirt open.

She is taken aback for a moment and traces a bizarre scare that is on his back.

"Xion...." the woman whispers.

A tear falls to the ground.

There is a sudden rustle and voices can be heard.

"I saw it land over here," cried one.

"Are you sure you weren't seeing things again Av... whoa!" says the other as they discover Xion.

"The heck is that?!"

"I don't know but we should go get the elder!"

Xion is alone again in the field, the woman in the white robes having flown away at the sound of intruders, but where her tear met the ground, a beautiful red poppy has sprouted.
