Rise to Ambition

It seemed like a Normal day in the valley where the Tyke lived. They were the Front line army of the order by birth, the dogs of war. However, this was not a position of nobility. No, They were mongrels, disposable soldiers to be the first to sacrifice there lives in the name of the King. This is the story of one such "mongrel", a canine by the name of Calvin.

Our story begins on a warm day in the valley. It was mid summer and the grass was swaying in the soft breeze as if dancing to a soft song only fields could hear. A young husky at a age no higher then 10 was seen running thru this grass, pushing all the brown and green brush off to the side as he ran towards the small town. The town of Tyke was populated by almost all canines except town leader, a young tiger who miss spoke his tongue and was then stationed here as a dead in for his career and a few guards of mixed feline races to accompany him. Most didn't know Tyke even existed and those who did cared little for it. It was simply a place to keep those deemed lesser by the order.

Calvin ran towards a small shack thru the tall grass of the field where his mother waited for her young son. Only in her late 20's herself, she was still young with a soft caring face. despite her age though, she was showing the ware of a hard life. Since they were not permitted to receive food from the main farms of the order, the women and children of Tyke had to grow there own food and worked the fields while the men were away at war. She called Calvin home for dinner, A feral squirrel that she had caught earlier. Meat was quite the treat in these parts as little time was available for hunting. The scene of young children and mothers was actually quite the normal site as the town was full of nothing but female canines and there children. Boys were taken away at 12 to join the army and serve for the rest of there lives.

Calvin finally made it to his mother and she welcomed him into the house with a warm smile and a pat on his head before they both sat to eat. They sat at a table near the right side of the house next to a window that faced the road. On the left back side, were the straw beds that the family shared and a old oil lamp to light the room up. They may have not had much but it was all they knew and therefor accepted it as such.

ten minutes or so into there meal a loud horn was suddenly heard across the valley, interrupting there meal. Calvin's eyes lit up and his mother smiled as well.

"Dad's home!" the young boy exclaimed. His mother nodding. "well go greet him. I doubt you will finish your food till you do."

Before she even finished her sentence, Calvin was running out of the house and towards the side of the road to watch as the small group of soldiers as they marched towards the town. Nearly twenty canines marched in sync with ages ranging from12 to old age. Though the ages leaned heavily to the young as few lived to see the later years. As they marched, a trail of dust followed them and in the lead was The one feline in the whole group, A black panther dressed up in a bright blue uniform with gold and silver buttons and pens all over.

The whole town came alive as it was rare to see the men back, So any chance to spend time together as a family was cherished. The street soon filled with people as if a parade was going on as many ran out to greet there fathers, sons and brothers.

"I don't see him. Where is he?" Calvin asked as his mother walks up behind him. Though not as bouncy and loud as her son, She was Just as excited as he was to see her husband. It had been weeks since they last were here and even then they only had a few days of rest before going out again. "I am not sure. Maybe he is in the back." She said this to ease her son a bit, but in truth, She was getting a bit worried herself.

Soon, Though it became very clear That Calvin's father wasn't there. That's when Calvin's mom gasped as she realized what this meant. She went pale and felt just heavy and sick. "this can't be real. Please let this not be real" she whispered to herself.

"Mom, I don't see him. Why isn't he here?" the young husky asked, but before his mother could collect herself, He was already running off to the soldiers and to where a large, black Panther was standing.

Calvin headed to the panther as he clearly stuck out and was surely in charge. Not only was this clear just cause of his species but also because of how he was dressed. As a Feline Office, he wore bright blue Uniform top with matching leggings and black boots. He had silver and gold buttons and adornments showing his rank and his prestige.

While in comparison, The soldiers behind him wore brown torn shirts of cloth or maybe stolen armor from the enemy. Worn pants and The ones that were lucky, had worn shoes with the bottoms falling off. The order did not spend money on mongrels Only enough for them to survive.

Calvin runs to the dressed up cat and looks up at him while tugging at his uniform. Horrified, His mother yelled and ran after him, Calling the boy back but it was too late. Looking up Calvin asked. "Sir, My father, where is my father? Why isn't he here?"

The Panther looked down at the dirty child daring to touch him with his nasty paws. With no warning, He kicks the lad back with a boot to his chest and then stands over the boy. "How am I to know where your father is? Know your place boy, If your dad's not here then he's dead and has served his purpose." He then steps on Calvin's chest and presses down as the boys mothers gasps and begs for him to stop.

Ignoring the raving women he peers down at the boy. "Learn your place. You have no right to touch your better. Be glad you have a purpose at all." he lifts his foot up finally letting the boy go as he scoffs. "Any who die are worthless" He looks back at the boy. "perhaps when you are of age you will do better then your father." He then laughs. "as for the rest of you, Go to your wives. We need more soldiers." With that, his gaze turns towards Calvin's mother as he holds her sun with tears running down her cheeks. "this one isn't taken anymore." the Panther points to one of the younger soldiers, maybe age 16. "you, she's yours. "he pushes the teen to Calvin's mother as she gasps at the prospect of what was expected with one so young. The Panther Grabbed Calvin's mom hair, forcing her to look down in front of the teen boy. "Take her tonight. By my order, She will bare your children" With that, he lets her hair go and dismissed the others. Calvin, his mother and now the teen all went to Calvin's home. However more males followed with ill intentions, as was the fate of widows. That night, Calvin watched in horror as the males used and bred his mother before his eyes by the order of the panther. He hated how they treated his family. How they used and discarded them as if trash.

From this day on, hatred burned in Calvin. His heart broken as he lost his father and watched his mother suffer. That's the day a fire started. Not one that burned houses, but one that burned in hearts over the course of years. A fire the order would regret ever starting. Thus did Calvin Promise to himself and to his dead father that he would change this. He would break the order and free the Canines from this life. He needed only to grow up.
