"Over-Arrest" (Teaser)

"Car seventeen, car seventeen, requesting status. Are you there Dragon? Over"

The radio squawking snapped Dragon out of his daze and he reached down to collect the receiver, his massive green hand easily covering the device entirely as he jostled it free from its hook. He fumbled for a minute to control the tiny microphone before bringing it correctly toward his mouth. "You know, I'm not really used to a patrol beat." He responded. "But I got it taken care of..." He glanced in the rearview mirror at his passenger. "And it's going to be an interesting story, I can tell..."

There was a beastly creature in the back seat, almost as big as Dragon himself, except instead of a hulking green man with a fin atop his head, his passenger looked more like a giant muscular grey duck who had immediately lost consciousness when Dragon found him. Carrying him to the car was a b--... "Erm... over."

"Alright, the chief wants to see you right away for a full report; whatever happened out there caused a huge power grid failure and he needs some help with the backlash it caused. Over."

Dragon had noticed the traffic jam due to the blinking red light ahead and despite the wailing of his siren, few cars seemed interested in moving out of the way for him. He sighed in aggitation. "I can see that. If it weren't for all the damn traffic I would be there in about fifteen minutes; now it looks like about an hour. I'll keep you advised. Seventeen out." He reached forward and replaced the microphone back onto the CB just as he heard a soft groan from behind him. Dragon's blue eyes returned to the rearview mirror as he adjusted it to get a better look at the creature he'd found, coming around and rubbing the back of his head as if in pain. "Well, well. Sleeping beauty finally wakes up." He said. "You awake enough to answer a few questions?"

The duck gazed at the officer, barely managing to hide a look of surprise at the mass of muscle in a police uniform as they stared at one another through the mirror. Eventually he nodded his head. "I will do my best." He said as he looked around. "Is... is this still Earth?"

Still Earth? Dragon's imagination ran away with him, what could this creature have meant by that? Could this be some sort of an invasion? Or some accidental visit by an intergalactic traveller? "Last I checked, you're in Chicago. This is my beat, but I've got to admit... I'm not as conventional an officer as my colleagues."

"Hmph...so you're a beast among men." The duck said. "I know the feeling, my friends and I have been trapped on Earth for several years now, we originate from a planet called Puckworld."

"Puckworld?" Dragon repeated. "Sounds like an amusement park for hockey enthusiasts."

"You know hockey?"

"I know of it." Dragon shrugged. "Never been much of a sports guy--" He noticed the duck shiver and huddle his arms around himself, as though suddenly getting cold. "Hey, hey. Are you okay, big guy? I know it's a little cold in here, but with this heatwave we're going through, air conditioning is one of our best inventions..."

"I am fine. The cold does not bother me; being a hockey player, I am used to it." He looked out the window. "Does Anaheim still exist on this Earth? I would like to try and contact my friends."

"Sure it does." Dragon shrugged. "But I've never heard of mutant alien ducks playing hockey there."

"Alternate dimension..."

"Excuse me?"

The duck looked at the officer, pressed an uncomfortable smile toward him. "The portal you encountered me exiting... it was a trans-warp portal. It was supposed to take me home, but somehow there was a power surge and it sent me here instead."

"I'll say there was a power surge. Your ...portal nearly knocked the entire city's power grid out."

"I must return home." The duck said. "You don't understand, I am going through some...changes and I must return to meditate these urges out..."

"What's your name, friend?"

"My friends call me Grin." The duck replied. "Grin Hardwing."

"Dragon." He spoke, turning around to face him. "I'll get you home, but it might take a while. Your little visit threw the city into chaos, so we've got a little traffic jam."

Grin shivered again. "Humans... always so full of themselves, small...helpless... I'd like to know what makes them the center of the universe..."

"What?"

Grin blinked and inhaled sharply. "My apologies...it's this change, every few years I have a shift in my personality, I become aggressive; anger that is difficult for me to control...it lasts several hours so I tend to isolate myself in meditation until the feeling passes... I have not had the luxury of..." He paused in the middle of his sentence and leaned forward. Dragon froze as he felt the beak press into the back of his neck and could hear the duck inhale along the back of it. Goosebumps flushed briefly across his green flesh before there was a grunt of realization from Grin, who immediately sat back.

"I-I'm sorry..." He stammered. "I am not sure what came over me there..."

There was definitely a radiant heat that came off of Grin that flooded Dragon's body and made him breathe a little heavier before responding. "No problem, people sniff me all the time!" He stated in an attempt to amusedly brush the strange sensation off as his fingers drummed on the steering wheel of the motionless car.
