A Tail for Two - Chapter 7

I washed the sorrow away.

The chilling water felt amazing on my face. After the flight here, I really needed a splash of cold water on my fur. I looked up into the mirror; I could tell how little of sleep I had by the black marks under my eyes. The airport bathroom was nice and somewhat fancy. A lot different from the bathrooms you'd usually see at a fast-food chain or a school.

I wasn't taking everything so bad, with my dad and all. I already cried over it all enough and I've grew to live without him for a while. It didn't matter that Cyd or Cyd's mother had anything to do with it; what happened, happened, no matter what the cause. Cyd on the other hand wasn't taking it nearly as well as I was. He was a lot more guilty and upset than me, which made it my turn to try to cheer him up. Hopefully he was easier to cheer up than me.

I opened the door to the restroom and made my way through the doorway. Cyd was waiting outside for me to exit. This city of San Francisco was very new and unfamiliar to me and without assistance, I would easily be lost. Cyd's face was not as bright as usual. Obviously the chain of events was eating at him from the inside out. "It's really not anything to worry about Cyd, I don't blame you for any of it," I said to him as I grabbed his swaying paw.

"Well I blame me," Cyd replied quietly, "I ruined your life." I reached my other paw over and wrapped it around his biceps. His muscles were constricted tight, unlike my skinny arms ever have been.

"Look, I promised you that I'd be happier even though I feel guilty, so now I'm going to make you promise to do the same!" I called out in a joking demand. I smiled wide at him, hoping it would make his grow as well. Unfortunately he didn't respond, so I used a more exciting approach. "Just think about it Cyd, we're alone in San Francisco! We can do anything you want to!"

Finally, his smile emerged. He gave me a very flirty and guilty look with a small giggle. "Anything I want?" he asked with a few more bursts of quiet laughter.

"Wait, what do you have in mind?" I asked back, somewhat scared and anxious.

"You'll see." It was great to see that we were finally able to let go of everything. The new atmosphere was taking its toll on us, but in a good way. I realize that we were letting go a little too easily, but we were young lovers alone in a new city; it was hard to keep our minds on the upsetting things.

We made our way out of the giant sliding glass doors of the airport where many were both entering and exiting. We walked down a long walkway towards a parking garage. In the front of the garage was a small pick-up and drop-off area, which is where we were headed. Cyd stopped at the side of the road and looked around, standing tall. "Here he comes," Cyd said to me, locking his eyes on a small blue vehicle coming our way.

"Who's that?" I asked curiously. Cyd explained to me on the plane that he was taking me to the house him and his mother used to live in. Living here for such a long time, he had to have made some friends who still knew him.

"Nate, there's someone I'd like you to meet," he said as the car pulled up to the curb we were standing on. The driver's window was down which allowed me to see a tall greyhound in the front seat. He had a rainbow colored Mohawk, but it was brushed down to the side instead of spiked up. "I'll let you have front seat," Cyd said laughing. His goal was to make me feel as awkward as possible, well, he succeeded. Cyd climbed into the back seat of the car as I ran around to the passenger door. I popped it open and hopped inside, nearly hitting my head on the roof.

"Who's this little fella?" The greyhound asked Cyd while staring at me. He had a wide, inviting grin, yet somewhat creepy at the same time.

"Ralph, this is Nate. Nate, Ralph," Cyd introduced, still snickering at my awkwardness. His mood seemed to be lightened; I could tell he was just trying to have fun with old friends.

"Well Hiya pup!" Ralph said as he extended out his arm for a paw shake. I reached out and shook with him; my posture showing my discomfort. "So, are we still going to Envi? Your arrival is going to be a surprised for everyone. Hell, it was a surprise for me!"

"What's Envi?" I asked, confused about where it is Ralph was taking us.

"It's a secret," Cyd replied, smiling, "You said we could do anything I wanted." Ralph's grin grew wider and Cyd was holding back laughter. "Let's just say I'm going to bring out your wild side."

What could he possibly have in mind? Sure, I was worried, but I trusted Cyd. Even though he has done some things that made him an unreliable person, I knew he wouldn't hurt me. The fact that he was even next to me made me feel safe. Why? I don't even know.

We passed by many buildings, both tall and small. The structure of this city was much different from that of Las Vegas. The roads were much more sloped and this city had much more water in the scenery. There were many ponds, lakes, and beaches, whereas Las Vegas had few if any. One thing that really caught my eye was the fashion sense and people. On the Las Vegas Strip, you'll find many "unique" characters and people, but if you wondered off away from the hotels and casinos, you'll notice that people are much more reserved. In this city, people we laid back and free to express themselves. San Francisco seemed like a place where you could just be yourself and be loved for who you are; it was an observation I've never even imagined existed.

"Well, we're here," Ralph said, taking the car key out of the ignition. I looked out my window and stared at a large brick building. It was only one story, but that one floor was huge. There was a big, neon sign above the front door with the word "Envi" written in fancy lettering. Cyd opened my door up and gave me his paw to help me out. I grabbed onto it and lifted myself out of the vehicle; my mouth was still opened in awe. On our way up the sidewalk, I heard the faint sound of a consistent beat; A deep thumping sound. As Ralph opened the door for Cyd and I, the sound grew intensely loud. It was music.

I walked through the door and the bright lights nearly blinded me. The techno music filled my ears and the neon blue, green, and purple lights flashed in my eyes. I had never seen anything like it! The trance sound was so harmonic, so energizing! People were dancing everywhere. Dogs, cats, birds, dragons, wolves, lizards, and so much more: all dancing together to the same beat. I wanted to stop and watch, but Cyd was pushing me forward towards the front podium, where a hawk stood and waited. When we reached him, he stopped us and asked for our tickets. I watched his eyes meet Cyd's and when they did, his mouth dropped open. "Cyd!" he yelled out over the loudness around him, "I haven't seen you in years!"

"Yea, I'm moving back down here for a little bit with my new boyfriend," Cyd replied, pulling me close to him as if showing me off as a trophy. It made me feel wanted, like I was a piece of priceless art. "Mind if we go in?"

The hawk stepped out of the way and let us by without hesitation. Cyd grabbed my paw tight and began walking. I followed closely behind him, not wanting to get lost in all of the madness surrounding us. A few of the people we passed yelled out different comments towards me as we walked by. Statements such as "did you see that tail?" or "what a cutie". I was afraid of all the attention, but I kind of liked it at the same time.

After sifting through the crowd, we reached some sort of lounge area. There were a few couches surrounding a small coffee table in the middle. Cyd led me over to a white loveseat, where I sat down and made myself comfortable. "I'm going to go get you a drink," he said to me with a wide smile. I laughed a little and waved as he left. The beat of the music was so hypnotic that it made me want to jump up onto my feet and dance like everyone else.

"That's my seat," Ralph said with an angry look on his face. Before I could react, his smile came back out and he yelled "just kidding!" Without even realizing it, my head started bobbing to the music. I had never been in a place like this in my entire life; the atmosphere itself was intoxicating. I felt a paw on my shoulder and thinking it was Cyd, I turned my head to my side and licked it.

"Well that's a good greeting from such a cute little puppy," he said. Realizing that it was not Cyd's voice, I ripped myself up from the small couch and turned to him. He was a tall coyote with dark brown fur. His smile was wide and his oceanic eyes were staring directly into mine. "Such gorgeous blue eyes as well."

"I'm so sorry," I replied nervously, "I thought you were someone else!" His eyes looked down to my tail, which I wrapped around my waist when I was extremely nervous, and then back up to my face.

"Don't be sorry at all, I loved every second of it."

"Hands off Mike," Ralph yelled at him from the long couch across from me, "he's Cyd's boy."

"Cyd?" he asked, taking a step back. His eyes were wide and his expression looked extremely surprised. "When did Cyd get back into town?"

"Just flew in about an hour ago, he's off getting drinks somewhere if you want to wait for him," Ralph replied.

"No thanks, its fine. Just tell him I'll catch up with him later," Mike said taking a step forward to his original position. He turned and looked back at me, his smile raising back up, showing his teeth. "But if you ever need anything hun, just give me a call," he said as he handed me a small piece of paper. I looked down at it and read the writing. It had both his name and number on it, neither of which I was that interested in.

"Thanks," I responded, putting the card in my back pocket. He nodded to me, looked down at Ralph, and then walked into the crowd. Mike was a little odd to me, but he seemed extremely nice and inviting.

"Don't mind him," Ralph called out to me as I sat back down into the small loveseat, "he's just overly friendly. Sometimes it can get him into some trouble." I laughed and looked out into the crowd. Once again the urge to dance filled my body, but I continued to resist.

When Cyd came back, he was holding two small glasses of a purple liquid. He handed one to me and I looked down at it with a worried face. I had never drunk alcohol before and I didn't really want to either.

"Don't worry, it's completely virgin," Cyd said to me, as if reading my mind. I gave him an "oh, I wasn't worried" type smile and took a sip from the strange concoction. It was fruity, like a mix of tangerines and strawberries, or something of the sort. It reminded me of a smoothie I had at a burger joint one time, but mixed with the feeling you get from drinking an energy drink.

"So why'd you guys come back down to San-Fran anyway?" Ralph asked, interrupting me from my alone-time with the delicious drink.

"Nate and I got into a situation that we really didn't want to be in," Cyd replied, trying not to say anything to upset me or trigger any bad thoughts in my brain. I didn't really mind though, because I went back into the world of berries and creamy goodness. Hey, don't make fun of me! You'd feel the same way if you had this drink too!

"What kind of situation?" Ralph asked in a confused voice. Cyd looked down at me. At first he had a confused face, but he shook it off and showed the brightness in his eyes.

"Want to dance?" Cyd asked me with an evil smirk. I realized that he completely ignored Ralph's question, which I'm pretty sure was his main goal. I looked up at him with my eyes opened broad. Sure, the music made me want to get up and party, but I was more scared then anxious.

"Cyd, I can't," I replied, "I don't know how to dance!"

"Don't worry, I'll teach you," he said, trying his best to corner me into saying yes. Sadly, it worked. I nodded my head and stood up from my seat. I took Cyd's paw and he dragged me out into the crowd. Every person we passed was dancing wildly. I observed them quickly, trying to learn from their actions. Cyd found us a small spot in the crowd where no one was occupying. He stopped and pulled me close into him; I felt his fur rub up against mine. He started moving his body, trying to get me to follow. I stood and watched, trying to hold back my laughter and embarrassment.

"Come on, dance!" he shouted at me, lightly scratching my stomach, "just feel the beat and move along!"

"I can't, I'll look stupid," I laughed. He continued to move, fitting in with all the other people dancing around him.

"Look around Nate! We all look stupid!" Hilariously, I agreed. Everyone in this entire building looked just as stupid as the person next to them. What's really wrong with looking just as stupid as everyone else? "Just start with your hips." I followed along, moving my hips to a new position once every two beats.

"There you go! Now your feet!" he yelled out at me. The energy started to come over me and I moved my legs and feet in the same monotonous pattern as my hips.

"You're almost there Nate! All you need now is your arms and head!" Once again, I complied. The music took over my body and the energy all around the room completely filled my mind. My arms were flailing, I didn't care. I looked completely stupid, I didn't care. I began to sweat all over and I was getting exhausted, but still, I didn't care.

For once in my life, I didn't care about anything. It was here, now, with Cyd. The feeling of invincibility was amazing. We had to have been dancing for at least 15 minutes straight; I loved every second of it. The lights were flashing on and off and waving all over the room and the trance beat was more powerful than anything I had ever heard before.

The song eventually ended and my legs felt like I had danced them off of my body. I fell into Cyd and laughed uncontrollably. I looked up and saw that he was laughing twice as hard as I was. "What's so funny?" I asked him, taking a breath between every word.

"That was the sexiest thing I've ever seen you do!" he yelled out, still laughing just as hard as he was before. I don't think I've ever had so much fun in my life and for the first time, nothing was wrong. All the drama had passed us by, everything that was on my mind was released, and the future seemed like it was going to be perfect. At least that's what I thought.

"Hey there little husky!" called out a panther who was standing nearby me and Cyd, "I was watching you dance and I just wanted to say that I've never seen anything like it. Where did learn to dance like that?" I laughed at him, slightly embarrassed. I wasn't sure if his question was rhetorical or not, so I chose not to answer. "Wait a second, I know you from somewhere," he said, speculating my face.

"I don't think so," I replied, "I just flew in from Las Vegas, I'm new here." He continued to stare at my face, examining every little detail.

"Oh yea!" he shouted at me, finally putting together his memory, "you're that kid from TV! They said you were kidnapped or something! I guess you were okay after all." I looked up at Cyd and he looked back at me with the same thought in mind. We had to find out what was going on and the best place to do that wasn't here. I started to rush my way through the crowd, Cyd holding onto my tail so he wouldn't lose me. Somehow I ended up back at the lounge area even though I had no idea where I was headed.

"Ralph!" Cyd screamed out from behind me, "we need to get back to my house, do you remember where I used to live?" Ralph stood up quickly, flipping his hair out of his face.

"Yea of course I do, what's the rush?" he asked, walking past us and into the crowd.

"Long story, we just need to go now!" Cyd screamed back; although Ralph was probably too far ahead of us to even hear him. Cyd and I broke through the groups of people who were resting from the workout they got out of the last song. We finally emerged out of the building and we began to head towards Ralph's car, where he was already starting the engine. I was planning on getting back into the passenger seat, but Cyd had already begun to get into it, so I jumped into the back. The car started and Ralph began to drive.

"So what's exactly going on?" Ralph asked, still talking loudly as if we were inside of Envi.

"Apparently the police think Nate was kidnapped," Cyd replied in the same volume.

"Yea, duh; haven't you been watching the news lately?" He looked at Cyd, then back at the road, surprised that Cyd or I haven't heard anything about it.

"You knew about it and didn't say anything?" Cyd asked back, punching him softly on the arm.

"I thought you of all people would've known!" Ralph yelled back, trying to justify that the punch was for the wrong reasons. Cyd shook his head as if telling Ralph that he was extremely stupid for keeping that to himself.

We turned onto an extremely quiet street. The only thing that could be heard was the faint sound of waves crashing against rocks. We began to slow down as we approached our destination. The car stopped and I stepped out of the vehicle. I looked up at the large house in front of me, which was more beautiful than any house I had ever lived in. It was two stories tall; each floor bigger than my house alone. I tried not to focus on it too much, because I had other things to worry about.

I followed Cyd up to the front door of the house, where he unlocked it with a key he pulled out of his backpack. The door swung open and I began to walk through, anxious to see where I would be living temporarily. The living room was huge! The walls were painted a grayish color and all of the furniture was black, including the tables, couches, and shelves inhabiting the room. Cyd made his way forward towards a flight of stairs.

"The phone's in the kitchen," Cyd said, pointing towards an archway in the side of the living room. I nodded and continued towards the doorway. "Can you handle it or do you want me to help?"

"I think I'll be fine," I replied as I walked across the room.

"I'll be in our room if you need me, it's not hard to find."

Our room? It just sounded weird. My entire life, or at least for as long as I could remember, I had my own room. It was such a new experience for me even to think about sharing a room with someone, but of all people, I'm glad it was going to be Cyd. With a house this big, he probably had many other rooms for me to sleep in, but he wanted me to sleep with him, which made me smile a bit.

I reached his kitchen, our kitchen, where all of the countertops and appliances were also black. The walls in this room were a lot brighter though, one of the brightest shades of white I had ever seen. Cyd's mom must've loved any shade of black or white she could get a hold of. I grabbed the receiver off of the wall and took a deep breath before dialing the police. A man with an extremely deep voice answered the phone. "911, what's your emergency?"

"Um, hi. My name is Nate, I'm from Las Vegas, Nevada," I replied nervously, "apparently someone said that I had been kidnapped or something and I just wanted to say that I wasn't. I'm perfectly fine." There was about 20 seconds of silence before the man spoke back to me. My guess was that he was looking up reports called in from my home town.

"Yes, Nate. We're glad your okay, but I need to know if you're alone," he asked me, as if expecting a certain answer.

"No, I'm not alone. I'm with my friend Cyd; we're staying at his house in San Francisco."

"Well, if it's okay, we're going to send out a few officers to go check up on you; just to make sure that no harm has been done to you. Is this okay?"

"Yea, I'm sure that's fine."

"Are you calling from a house phone or a cell phone?"

"A house phone."

"Okay, then we'll trace down the address and head right over there. Thanks so much for calling us Nate." I hung up the phone and went back to the living room. I began to climb up the stairs, my feet still sore from my first time dancing. When I reached the top of the stairs, I began to walk down a hallway. All of the doors I passed were open, allowing me to see inside easily. I passed a bathroom and two bedrooms before reaching the master bedroom. I looked inside and saw Cyd standing next to the bed, getting undressed.

My eyes scanned from his back to the bottom of his legs. His back was so perfectly structured; his fur glowing brightly. His waist was so small, yet still very muscular. Finally, my eyes landed on his butt, which was perfectly round and firm; I couldn't stop staring. Cyd began to turn around and I ripped my head away, pretending I didn't see anything.

"You know, if you wanted to see me naked, you don't have to spy," he said, laughing at the circumstance we were in.

"No! It's nothing like that. I was just coming to tell you that I cleared everything up. I-I-I didn't mean to walk in on you or anything. I swear I didn't see it!" I replied to him, stuttering on my words. I didn't even think about turning around; I was still completely embarrassed.

"Don't worry, I've got shorts on now," he said, reassuring me that there was no reason to be scared or nervous. "Sorry we have no food or anything in the house, I haven't been here for years. We'll go shopping tomorrow."

I turned around and saw him lying on the bed, staring at me. His eyes were sending me a message, as if begging me to come lay next to him. The shorts he was wearing were small and tight. They probably came from a stack of clothes that he left here when he moved away. His shirtless body was gorgeous and I tried my hardest not to stare at it. I walked over to the bed and sat down on the edge of it.

"You're not going to come lay by me?" he asked me in a flirty tone. Of course, I gave in to his wishes and jumped on the bed next to him, laying my head on his chest. "Now that's more like it."

It felt so good to finally rest my head. I hadn't received a full night of sleep in a while. I resisted the urge to start licking his chest. Which, trust me, was extremely hard to do. I felt so safe and taken care of lying there. Cyd wrapped his arms around me tight and everything seemed so right, but like everything else in my life, as soon as I was in a perfect moment, something had to go wrong.

The doorbell rang and Cyd's ears perked up tall. "Don't worry," I said, "it's just the police; they wanted to make sure I wasn't hurt or anything." I began get up, but Cyd grabbed me by the shoulder and told me that he was going with me.

Together, we walked down the stairs and into the living room. I opened the front door and looked up at the two officers standing in front of me. Their eyes looked right past me and straight at Cyd.

"Are you Cyd?" one of them asked hastily.

"Yea, why?" Cyd replied, just as confused as I was that they didn't even look at me. One of the men stepped forward and grabbed his arm tight and began to pull him forward.

"You're under arrest for stealing over $150,000 from your father; he asked us to arrest you without question." They hooked a pair of handcuffs to one of his arms and then grabbed his other arm and cuffed it as well. Cyd looked up at me and I could tell there was fear in his eyes.

"You were a hard one to find Cyd!" The other officer said to him in an annoying and taunting tone. "What's funny is that your dad didn't even want his money back, he only wanted you behind bars. Thank god your little buddy pointed us out to you." I looked up at his face in with an extremely scared expression.

"I'm sorry Cyd! I didn't know they were after you!" I yelled out, trying my hardest to explain my position.

"Don't worry Nate," he whispered to me as they began to take him out of the house, "It's not your fault at all; I didn't know they were after me either." The officers continued to pull Cyd away from me and towards their police cruiser.

"What am I supposed to do here alone?" I screamed out to Cyd, trying to get his attention as they pushed him into the back of the vehicle.

"I got a lot of friends out here that will bail me out, I'll be back by the time you wake up in the morning." He yelled back to me as they shut the door to the car. As the two men drove him away, tears began to roll down my eyes. I shouldn't have told the cops that Cyd was with me, I should've lied. Now I was alone, scared, and in a foreign place. I shut the door and locked it tight. If you have ever been alone in a huge house, you could imagine how scared I was feeling. All I needed was someone there to tell me there was nothing to worry about, which was exactly what Cyd always did for me. Now that he was gone, I had no one, but I had someone else in mind that might've been able to take his place; at least temporarily.

I walked into the kitchen and picked up the phone once again. As I pulled Mike's card out of my back pocket, I tried my hardest to stop crying. I dialed the numbers that were engraved on the card, taking a deep breath once I was done. He picked up the phone quickly and answered with a cheery "Hello?"

"Hey, Mike? I'm really sorry if I'm bugging you, but I need someone to talk to. Cyd was just taking to jail by the police and now I'm all alone in his house. You think you can come give me some company, just until he comes back?"

"Yea, of course cutie," he replied in a soft and comforting tone, "just give me twenty minutes or so and I'll be on my way."

"Thank you so much Mike; I just really need someone here for me."

I need you here for me.
