Everything changes so fast.

"Why are you bleeding Cyd? You can't expect me to just sit here and pretend this isn't happening!" I yelled in fear. I wasn't going to drop it anytime soon, not until I had an answer. If he was right and his dad did do this to him, then why doesn't he do something about it? Why doesn't he call to police or something and get him to go to jail? His home was obviously different from mine. Cyd continued to drive, ignoring me completely. "Come on Cyd; just let me know what happened."

"Okay Nate, this is the only time I'm going to say this," he began. "I've given you everything I have. I've been sweet to you, I stayed overnight at the hospital with you, and now I'm running away with you. Sure, it's barely been over a week, but I've never felt this strong about someone in my life. I don't even know why I'm feeling the way I am, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm doing it all for you. The only thing I ask in return is that you never ask me about my family again. I don't need you to get me chocolate on Valentine's Day or be there for me whenever I need someone to hold, I just need you to pretend I never had a family." I sat perfectly still, trying to put together the puzzle pieces of words. What could be so bad about his family that he didn't want me to even mention them? Sadly, Cyd was right though. He has given me everything I could possibly need and he was probably going to continue giving me more and more. If all he was asking was this one request, how could I deny it? "Promise me Nate," he said, still staring at the road in front of us.

"Yeah, I Promise," I replied in a soft tone. His expression didn't change; he just continued driving as steady as he could. "Do you think you could stop by my house before leave?" I asked.

"Yea, I was driving in that direction anyway," he responded, trying to break a smile. He didn't really succeed at it, but at least he was trying. I couldn't help but think about how it would be stepping into my house anymore. With Luke gone, it wouldn't really feel like home. His bedroom would seem like a grave to me. We made the final turn onto my street and proceeded forward towards my house. It could be the last time I would ever see it. Who knows how long I would be gone? A day, a week, even a year. I could be gone forever.

I knew that it was wrong to run away like this, I knew that I should just face the facts rather than escaping them, but I didn't really care. The best thing for me to do was just forget about everything and start over; having a constant reminder that Luke is dead wasn't going to help me move on.

As we pulled up, I noticed Cyd still refused to look me in the eye. "Hurry up, okay Nate?" he asked, staring at the wheel.

"I will," I responded, "are you okay?"

"Yea, I'm fine. I just don't really like you being out of my sight, at least not right now." He looked up from the wheel and I nodded in acceptance. It seemed to me that he was actually scared about his emotions. It seemed like he was afraid that he bonded with me too strong, too quickly. In a way, I felt the same. I guess love at first sight is real, but that doesn't mean it's right. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I don't want to love Cyd; I'm saying that falling in love can't be this easy, there's got to be a catch.

As I grew closer to my home, I began to hear voices deep from inside the walls. I eased closer, pressing my ear against my wooden front door. The mumbles we're too clouded to be understood, but they definitely were not familiar. The sound of glass breaking made me jump back from the door in surprise. Following the shatter was a few slamming noises, as if cabinets were being open and shut quickly. I crouched closer to the ground and began to make my way to the nearest window. My heart began to beat faster and faster as I peeked my head up into view. I scanned everything in my sight, from one side of the room to the other.

It was trashed... ransacked. The furniture was torn apart, the walls had been scratched up, and the entire room was filled with trash. It was hardly recognizable. My muzzle opened wide in awe. What could have possibly happened in here to make this big of a mess? A figure appeared from the right side of the living room. It was large, tall, and definitely male.

I squinted my eyes, trying to focus the image. The animal was some kind of canine or feline, definitely a rougher breed. As it grew closer, I realized it was neither; the man was a hyena. His spots were dark brown and his fur was a bright gold. The light reflected off of his sharp claws directly into my eyes. I ducked down farther, making sure I was not in his view.

"Hey Rocco!" he shouted across the house, towards my room, "Are we almost done here?" His voice was high pitched and had some type of Boston accent. He looked bored and annoyed, which took away from his threatening appearance. I looked down in his paws; he was holding something with a tight grip; he was holding a gun.

"Will you shut up already? You haven't stopped complaining since we got here," someone shouted from my room. The voice was very faint because I was so far from its origin, but it was still comprehendible. "I told you, we can't leave until that fag gets back! The boss wants him dead."

"Yea, but we have no idea when that's going to be." He turned around and made his way towards my kitchen, or at least what was left of it. I collapsed backwards, using my arms to hold me up. These men... were they the ones who shot Luke? Was that the very same gun that was used to end the life of my little brother? It had to be, there was no other explanation.

But now they were coming for me. Taking one life wasn't enough for the savages. Apparently being homosexual was such a disease, such a curse, such a fucking waste of life that they had to take it into their own hands to change it all. To them, I didn't have a soul. To them, it wasn't murder; it was a favor to the world. I didn't understand how anyone could think like that, but I knew they still did.

What really pisses me off the most is that they couldn't just kill me and get it over with. No... they had to take Luke down with me too. They had to make me suffer before killing me. They had to make sure everyone who ever cared for me, the fag, was also in pain.

I wanted to rip open the front door and charge in, attacking both of them simultaneously; making them feel another blow to the face for every dying breath that Luke had to suffer through. I couldn't though. I couldn't stoop to the same level as those murderers. I bet anyone in this world would go in and get revenge on them, but not me. If there was one thing Luke taught me while he was alive, it was that karma does exist. If I went in and punished them, not only would I be staining all that I stand for, but it would be way too easy on them. When karma comes back around, and trust me it will, they will be tortured just like they tortured me. They have it coming.

I slowed my breathing, attempting to calm myself down. As my chest rose and fell with each breath, images of Luke's suffering body flooded my head. I closed my eyes tight and attempted to refrain from whining. I had to do something, anything to keep my mind busy and away from the anguishing game of Pictionary I was playing with myself.

I threw my body up and took off running past the house and down the driveway. I could feel my hands clinch tight as I ran. I jolted around the car and jumped in the passenger door. "Nate, is everything okay?" Cyd asked me while watching my frenzied paws struggle to buckle the seatbelt.

"No! Drive as fast as you can, we have to get out of here now!" I replied, finally clicking the belt shut. Cyd quickly pressed down the gas and jolted off. He was breathing heavy and his pupils were dashing back in forth on the road. He was obviously confused and scared.

"What's going on Nate? Why do we have to leave so fast?" he blurted out in the confusion.

"They were at my house. They guys who shot Luke; they were looking for me!" I yelled out, taking a breath between each word.

"You sure it was them?" he asked me with a growing sound of anger in his voice.

"Yea, I'm positive." He took a second to scan through his thoughts and then began to speak again.

"Okay, this is what I'm going to do," he started, reaching for my tail. I caught the hint and moved it into his hands. "I'm going to find somewhere safe for you to go and then I'm going back to your house and take care of them." I looked up at him in distress. I understood exactly why he'd want to go back, but he couldn't gather his thoughts as easily as I could. He couldn't come back to terms with reality as well as I could. I had to somehow pull him back in.

"No Cyd, you can't!" I yelled out at him.

"I can't just pretend they're not there. I can't let them get away that easily!"

"And I can't be left alone again Cyd. You're all that I have right now, I can't lose you too." I stared at his face in silence. His grip tightened and he let down on the gas a little. I turned my head and looked out of the window, watching the scenery pass. Cyd didn't say a word. He didn't want to leave me alone, but at the same time he wanted to turn around and go back. "So, where are we going?" I asked, trying my hardest to end the awkward silence.

"The airport," he replied quietly. I was shocked! How did he get enough money to afford a flight? Plus, I wasn't aware that we were going far, I thought we were simply leaving to a neighboring town or city.

"What?" I questioned, "Where are we flying to?"

"My mom used to own a beach house in San Francisco, I'm hoping we can settle down there for a while and let all this go," he replied in a reassuring voice.

"Settle down? Are we really staying away for that long?" He exhaled deeply and shook his head.

"I'm doing whatever I can to keep you safe."

"Yea, I know, but I wasn't planning on staying forever."

"I'm going to keep you away from here as long as I have too. I didn't like this idea at first either Nate, but that's when I thought it was all over. When you told me they were at your house, I knew this was the right choice, because they won't stop searching for you until they found you." It was a scary thought. I didn't want to leave this place, but I had no choice; they wouldn't stop for anything until they had what they wanted and I knew it. "We're getting close; do you have your phone?"

"Yea, I do." I reached my hand into my pocket and pulled out my small flip phone. The screen was pitch black. I flipped it open to see if a light would show, but I received nothing in response. "Dammit! It's dead," I grunted in disappointment.

"It's fine, just make sure you find a phone when we get inside; we need to call police as soon as we can. Maybe they can actually catch those bastards." We approached a large parking garage directly adjacent to the airport. As we raised each level, not a single parking spot could be found. I had only been to this airport once in my life and it wasn't quite for vacation.

My mom was going to take me and Luke to Florida to spread my father's ashes into the ocean. Luke agreed to go easily, but I refused to step on the plane. I know it wasn't really an event that I should've missed, but I was deathly afraid of flying. I ended up going back home and spending the day with a few friends; the only friends I had.

I wasn't too close to my dad, but Luke was like his best friend. They went fishing together every weekend and always watched Football together anytime the Dallas Cows were playing. I guess they could do it again now that they were both....

We had reached the seventh floor of the garage by the time Cyd found us a parking spot. He backed into it slowly, being sure not to touch the two trucks that surrounded us. I reached down to grab his backpack for him, but he grabbed my arm before I got near. "It's okay Cyd, I can carry it," I said to him, trying to smile.

"Please Nate, I got this," he demanded with a scared look in his eye. I was a little confused, but I complied. I extended my arms towards the door handle, but was interrupted by a ripping noise coming from the driver seat. I turned my head around and looked at stacks of cash spilled all over the floor board. Cyd's bag must've caught on something and ripped it open as he pulled it up. There had to have been at least 100 thousand dollars worth of currency spread across the car; each bundle held tightly by a red or blue rubber band. Cyd looked up at me in disappointment and I stared back in a ghostly fright. "You weren't really supposed to see that," he called out quietly and ashamed. I just stood in complete silence, confused and afraid.

Cyd... What are you hiding?
