#2 of The Interviews

The second in my seven interviews, this time with Wulf Draqnis. He's a tile, a half reptile half humanoid. Compared to canids and nekomaras, they have scales all over their body instead of skin and fur and can sometimes have features like horns, wings, and some are born without legs. Wulf is Aren's best friend but has some anger issues with canids and nekomaras. Wonder why.

Wulf flaps his wings closed as he enters the room. He pulls the seat swiftly out and promptly sits down on it. He lifts his legs and props them on the table right in the dent Aren made earlier. The interviewer, a canid, a humanoid with fox ears and a bushy, orange tail with a white tip, takes out a notepad and pen. He shuffles in his coat, pressing the record button on a hidden recorder inside a pocket. "State your name and occupation."

"Wolf Draqnis, a security guard for Noire Corp."

"And how did you come to this job?"

"What's that suppose to mean?" Wulf snarls and flaps his wings, bringing up gusts of wind and disturbing the interviewer's papers.

"Nothing? I'm-"

"Is it 'cause I'm a tile?" Wulf takes his feet off the table and sits upright. "Typical canids, could never think a tile can have a job like this."

"You must be fun, Mr. Draqnis." The interviewer jots down more notes.

"When I'm not being asked stupid questions." The dragon tile sighs, massaging his temple. "I'm sorry, it was wrong for me to assume. Our kind hasn't exactly been treated with respect."

"Mr. Draqnis, I am aware of the racist comments tiles get since the country has more people born with fur and skin as oppose to scales and sometimes horns, wings, no legs, or none of those extra features." The interviewer looks up from his notes and takes note of Wulf being a tile born with horns as well as wings. One of the horns appears to have been broken off. "Can you tell me about the broken horn?"

"Happened in juvie, by a visitor."

"And that was Aaron Goldie, right?"

Wulf stares at the interviewer, scowling. "How did you know that?"

"I did my research."

"No, HOW did you know that? The place was destroyed!"

The interviewer stops writing and looks into Wulf's eyes. "Luckily, a nearby facility kept a record of everything, a visitors log especially. Curious how Dr. Noire was the last visitor before the juvenile center and the entire village was destroyed."

"Not just destroyed," said Wulf, "but planned. Looking at the crater, it was along the village border. Normally detonations like that would be a full circle, but this one focused on the town specifically."

"Was it to get rid of you?"

"Excuse me?"

"Not only did I see the visitors log," the interviewer said, going back to writing notes, "but I saw that Noire got you out. She paid guards to release you. Have you ever wondered why?"

"She told me she was working with Aren and if I came with her I could see him again."

"Aren Goldie, your best friend."

"Yes," Wulf said, looking down at his bandaged fists, "my best friend. The only person in that whole village that didn't see my scales and thought I was a freak. Growing up an orphan in a conservative village comprised mostly of canids and nekomaras that taunted me for my scales, horns, and wings, I grew up alone. The only time I was ever happy was when I played with Aren. Until-"

"He got on your back and you flew around the village."

"His mom was pissed. She called the cops on me and locked me away. I'd never see him again if Noire didn't get me out. Hell, I wouldn't be alive if not for her. That's how I got my job. Noire offered it and I took it just to see Aren again."

The interviewer jots down more notes, turning several pages as Wulf talks. "Were you there for Aren's first and second experiments?"

"No, I was brought on after that."

"So your first time being in Noire Corp and you didn't get to see the first facility?"

"No," Wulf said, "I was told Nera destroyed it after coercing Aren to escape the facility. He killed everyone except three people."

"Does that put you on edge?"

"No, it was Nera that did that. And from what Aren has told me, he's getting Nera to go along with him."

The interviewer looks over his notes and closes his notebook. "Okay, I think we're done."

"Really? You just asked me how I got the job."

"And you answered follow up questions within that question. I'm good, don't worry." The interviewer stands up and offers his hand. Wulf stands up as well and shakes it. "I hope this isn't the last time I shake a tile's hand. The scales feel nice."

"So does skin, and don't worry, you've got Ishika to interview."

"Ah, yes," the interviewer coughs and takes his hand back, "that I'm not looking forward to."

Wulf turns towards the door and walks towards it. "Sorry about before. I'm not used to people treating me with respect." Wulf leaves the room, smiling.

The interviewer sits down and looks over his notes. "Wulf Draqnis: Dragon Tile, works as a security guard for Noire Corp. Anger issues, especially with canids. Developed in juvie? His horn was broken off by Aaron Goldie during his time in juvie. Why? Noire saved his life from an explosion that took out his and Aren's village. Feels he owes a life debt to her and is working for her if only to see Aren. Romantic interest? An interesting one for sure." The interviewer gets up and opens the door. "Wolfie Goldie, I'm ready for you."
