First and foremost this story is copyright by me and may not be used in part or wholly without my express consent

Secondly I am "NOT' an English major I scraped by with a d average in school and do not need criticism on my writing abilities. This is a story of MY mind. There is no reason to tell me that I flunked in the English department.

This book is ongoing and I'm not sure when or how it will end as of yet. I have spells of inspiration and dry spells where I can't think of anything to write about. My real life is so boring that I created this world in my mind to have something to do.

Otherwise enjoy the story and understand that my life was influenced by authors such as Terry Brooks, J.J.R. Tolkien, and Ray Bradbury and several of the artists in SoFurry and the old Yiffstar.

Chapter 1

I had a wife and kids. We had been married for almost six years and she treated me very well and bore me two wonderful children. My daughter was five years old and my son was two and a half years old and both of them were the reason I was always happy.

Then disaster struck 2 months ago when they were in a car accident with semi which took them from me forever. The wife died instantly in the crash. Both children made it to the hospital where they both died shortly after their bodies too mangled to be saved.

I spent the next 2 months grieving and crying over their deaths. My depression was so bad, I drank all the time and I almost killed myself to end my hurt. After a bit I decided that I needed something to keep my mind off of the accident so I reported back to work.

I was better having people around me. It helped me cope with my loss and I got back into the swing of preparing houses for demolition and marking things for removal prior to demolition. The co-workers were very courteous about my recent loss and said there condolences to me.

We were in a house way away from other houses in the boonies and the house was scheduled to be demolished so we were inspecting it and tagging it for item removal. Upper level was completed and crews were removing items. I was inspecting the main floor with two others, deciding what was worth salvaging and what should be left behind. At the end of the day the main level was almost completed when the boss asked if I would stay and finish tagging the houses main floor and basement so they could have it ready for demolition in two weeks.

I agreed to do the work figuring anything to keep busy and finished the main level. I went down to the basement and started marking items for removal. After marking the items I noticed that the basement seemed smaller than other floors of the house so I stepped out the size of basement and then went back to main floor and stepped it out. The main level was larger by almost twenty feet. I went back to basement and walked it out and found the short wall and saw a strange looking spot on it. When I touched the spot and the wall rumbled as it descended into the floor of basement revealing hidden room. When the wall descended the sound scared me to the point that I bolted towards the door of the house. When nothing else happened I headed back to the basement. When I got there the wall was gone and there was an open space where the wall was and on the wall there was what looked like a mirror that didn't work.

There was a large frame with what looked like glass in it but the back didn't reflect anything. It was kind of swirled like metallic paint that needed mixing. I reached out and touched the mirrors frame and felt a vibration in it. Yanking my fingers back I looked at them and saw nothing wrong with them. I then noticed on the frame of the mirror was a hook with what looked like a bracelet hanging on it.

I Reached for the bracelet and was startled and jumped as the bracelet suddenly appeared on my left wrist. Without thinking I tried to remove it and then as I calmed down I noticed that it had embedded itself into my skin. There was no way to remove it short of surgery. I examined the bracelet and decided that it was a strange looking item. Around the entire band there were what looked like emeralds encrusted, but there was no visible signs of attachment.

Suddenly there was a rumbling from the mirror frame and when I looked to it I noticed that the swirls were now moving. I watched as the mirror continued to swirl but do nothing else. I was intrigued by the swirling of the mirror, trying to figure out what it was doing.

Screwing up my courage I reached out with my hand to touch the glassy surface again and my fingers passed through the mirror. Where my fingers passed through the mirror there was a tingling like my fingers had fallen asleep. I instantly yanked them back and looked at them and nothing seemed wrong with them. I noticed that the bracelets jewels hat momentarily flashed from green to red then back to green. I decided to try again and slowly pushed my hand and arm up to my elbow through. There was the same tingling of my skin where it touched the mirror like surface but nothing else seemed to happen. I then brought my arm back and again noticed nothing wrong with it.

I then sat there debating what I should do next and after a bit of reasoning I decided to put my head through and see what was on the other side. after a short bit of screwing up my courage I reached the top of the mirror things frame with my hand to hopefully pull myself back if possible, I gently pushed my head through the mirror things surface and instantly was dizzied by the sudden movement and then the focus returned to my eyes and I saw a grassy field with some woods nearby and the sky was a bright blue and all was pristine and untouched by mankind's machinery. I observed that there was sweetness in the air and that off in the distance you could hear birds chirping. I wondered where this place was and after looking around as far as I could see I then decided it was time to pull my head back through.

I was back in the basement and I noticed that the bracelets gems were red again for a little longer and then one by one they turned back to green. I did some deep soul searching and figured that I wasn't going to be missed here if I disappeared so I decided to go through the portal so I could check out the other place where the mirror was taking me.

After swallowing my fear I boldly stepped through the glass and was swept to the place I saw when I stuck my head through. I noticed that I felt a draft in my lower region and realized I was naked. I then tried to go back and discovered I couldn't. I then noticed that all the gems on the bracelet which was the only thing to make it through were all red. I was struck with the thought that I was in a strange world and naked. I thought that I needed to make some kind of makeshift clothes and sprinted over to the treed area. There was a good stand of what looked like reeds at the edge of the trees so I stripped several leaves and made a makeshift skirt out of them.

It was then that I noticed a doe/human hybrid staring at me in amazement. She was wearing what looked to be a ladies leotard or a one piece swimsuit. I stood still and was surprised as she started over to me.

She was looking me over and studying me like she was trying to figure out what I was.

I was completely startled and almost ready to run when she spoke to me.

"Are you alright?" the deer/lady asked me.

I stood there in bewilderment ad I realized that I could understand her words.

Again she asked, "Are you ok?"

I stammered back, "I think so but I'm not sure."

I looked her over and saw that she was all brownish-tan except for her belly fur which was white which ran from her neckline down into her outfit. There were tufts of white at the meeting of her thigh's signifying that her white went down her belly. As she got closer to me I noticed that her muzzle had the only other color showing with her nose being black. Her ears were just as you see on wild deer, with the exception they were on the top of the head like a deer instead of on the sides like humans.

Her eyes were like a cross between the sun gold and brown.

She then asked, "Why are you not wearing clothes and hide yourself with bushes?"

I tried to explain it to her that I had came through a portal that removed my clothing from me and to my surprise she said she knew what had happened, that her husband had found the last teleporter and helped him as well.

She then said, "My name is Doreen and my family lives nearby. We can find some clothing for you there if you would like."

I replied, "I would like that very much."

Doreen then started walking off towards the wooded area. As she walked she asked me, "Do you know where you are?"

I replied, "I have no idea but it is very beautiful here."

As we walked to her house somewhere in the wooded area I explained to her about why I decided to come to this place including the part about how I lost my wife and kids. When I was finished she smiled at me as best she could with a muzzle instead of a human mouth.

"So where you come from, you don't have fur covering all of your body?" she asked.

I replied "Yes we were considered a sort of hairless ape and that the only fur we had was this thin stuff all over and then thick patches on head and personal areas."

Doreen chuckled when I said hairless ape and continued to her residence.

We passed into the wooded area near to where I had made my skirt and as we went deeper into the forested area I noticed there were mounds of dirt with doors on them. I asked Doreen, "What are those mounds with the doors on them?"

She replied, "They are the entrances to the grounders abodes."

"Grounders?" I queried.

She then said, "You know the ground dwelling creatures like Foxes, Ground Squirrels, and such.

I then replied, "Oh, I feel rather stupid by not thinking about what a grounder was."

Shortly we had entered another area with a field and some sparse housing on it and Doreen was heading towards the nearest which looked like a grass hut. She opened the door and said, "Welcome to my humble abode."

I replied, "Thank you so very much for allowing me to be a guest in your home Doreen."

Doreen then excused herself for a second and reappeared with what looked like a green women's one piece swimsuit and passed it over to me and said that this should fit quite well.

I took the suit and looked at it and saw that it indeed was a racer type swimsuit with the t-back. I looked at the suit and then asked her, "Is this what you want me to wear?"

Doreen saw the look on my face and said, "All who live here wear this type of clothing, men, women, and children. The only ones that don't are the burden animals who are not changed."

"Changed?" I asked.

She said, "The creatures that were not morphed when the old ones destroyed their world." She then went on to explain that there was a great war that caused all the elders to die and the creatures to morph from pure animal to a hybrid creature.

"I am a hybrid deer as you can figure, my family are all hybrids."

"You have a family?" I inquired.

Doreen looked kind of embarrassed and said, "I have a family of four. My husband's name is Herod. We have two children. Alicia the oldest is a young doe of ten years of age and our son, Aramis is five years of age." She then said, "They will be home soon and I'd prefer if you were dressed when they get here."

I said, "Very well I'll put the suit on, just show me where I should do this."

She took me to the back corner of the house and showed me what looked to be a row of bedrooms and said, "You can get dressed in one of these."

She then left me alone to put on an outfit that back home would have marked me a crossdresser.

I removed my woven reeds and after a bit figured out how to put on the suit and after adjusting myself to get more comfortable. I then headed out to the room where Doreen was waiting on me.

She looked me over and said, "That suit looks very good on you."

I replied, "Thanks."

She then asked me, "Would you like some water to drink?"

I replied, "Yes that would be lovely."

She stepped into what I figured was their kitchen and poured two containers of water and brought them back to the living room and handed me one and gestured for me to sit down.

Within five minutes of small talk there was the sound of feet approaching and Doreen said, "That will be my family."

When the door opened I gasped. Standing in the doorway was a deer hunters dream. This buck had at least twenty points on his rack which was massive. He had the body of a weightlifter and the same facial features as Doreen. He also had on an outfit that looked like a woman's swimsuit that was a shiny blue.

He looked at Doreen and asked, "Who is this?"

Doreen replied, "He is from the other side, look at his wrist to confirm this and then say hello you lummox."

He walked over to me and saw the bracelet on my wrist and said, "Hello stranger from another land and welcome to our house. Feel as if you were family while you stay here with us."

I stuck out my hand and then pulled back thinking that they didn't shake here but was surprised as the buck grasped my wrist and said, "I am happy to have you as a friend. My name is Herod and I take it you already know my wife Doreen."

I replied, "we met in the field on the other side of the woods."

Herod then said, "I'll call the children in and you can tell your tale to us all at once instead of one at a time." With that he hollered out the door,

"Alicia, Aramis, Come in here please."

A couple of seconds later there was two younger deer standing in the living room and staring at me.

"Who is this?" Aramis asked.

Herod replied, "Do you remember telling you about a traveler when I was a young buck? Well this is another traveler and I called you in to hear his story so he wouldn't have to repeat it for each of us."

They all sat and I told them my story up to the point where I was brought to their house by Doreen. When finished the children looked fascinated.

Aramis suddenly asked, "Are you going to stay with us?"

"No, don't yell at the boy. He has a valid question." I said. "I'm not sure where I am staying yet young Aramis."

With that I was surprised when Herod said, "You'll be staying with us here and we will talk about your future before time tomorrow. You then can do as you wish after that.

Doreen then said, "I'm going to start dinner and then we will work out sleeping arrangements."

Herod then looked my way and said, "Why don't we go out on the porch and chat alone for a bit?"

I replied, "Fine by me," and I followed him out on the front porch and sat on a couple of rocking chairs.

Herod spoke then saying, "I was a young buck when the last person to crossover was here. He didn't seem to fit in and was noticeably upset by the fact that animals were in charge of this world, so in the end he went back to his world. You on the other hand, seem to enjoy it here."

"You have me pegged so far Herod," I replied.

Herod then said, "When the other person came through he said that on his world copper was a commonly used metal over there."

I replied, "Where I come from it is the primary conductor for energy."

He then said, "I know not what energy transfer is but here our money is made of copper and it is a hard earned item to have here."

I looked at him inquisitively and said, "Where are you going with this?"

Herod then said, "Simply this, if you use the bracelet to return to your world tomorrow you could get quite a bit of copper from over there wrap it in the material we call Stretchtex, but the other person said you call it Spandex. You then could send it through to this side and become rich over here.

I looked at him and said, "I understand where you are coming from but I do not have a lot of copper personally to get access to."

Herod then said, "There is a switch on the side of the bracelet that when you transfer you can stop time for an hour to do whatever you wish without having anyone try to stop you. The other person said he would go and take all the wiring from the electrical depot nearby and bring it back here. Then he decided to stay on the other side."

"An hour of time stopped?" I said as much to myself as for Herod's ears.

Herod then said, "I see a plan forming in your mind and all I ask of you is that if you do this, is not to forget us who befriended you here."

I looked towards Herod and said, "I have a plan forming, but it will involve you as well and for your help I will make sure you and your family are taken care of."

Herod then asked, "What do I need to do?"

I then explained to him what I planned to do and explained that I needed him to have some kind of wagon or something to bring the copper back to his house after bringing it through.

He said that there are still beasts of burden used to pull heavy items around on wagons.

We had just finished outlying the plan when Doreen came to the door and said, "dinner is ready, you two," and then she called to the children to come to dinner as well.

We went in and had a wonderful meal and after we finished dinner Doreen told the children to get cleaned up for bed and then said, "Aramis you will sleep in the living room and allow our guest to use your room."

I looked at Doreen and said, "Please don't put the kid out just for me, I'll sleep out here and he can keep his room."

She looked startled by my statement and then asked, "Are you sure?"

"I am positive," I replied, adding, "I'm going to be here tonight and then with Herod's help I'm going back to my world and then return a couple of days later to stay. Then I want your family's help choosing me a place to stay."

With that said Doreen seemed to be happy and I could tell that Aramis was glad he didn't have to leave his room.

After a bit of kids being kids, the whole family, including myself, lay down to sleep.
