#2 of Jaybird

Jaybird is a short crime/drama themed story about two wolves in a dirty world.

This story is based off a roleplay between myself and a friend.

With his permission I was allowed to use the roleplay material as a basis to practice writing further, as it is a hobby I intend to try and maintain moving forward.

Please enjoy!

When Jay woke, he turned his head to see Anderrick's bed empty, and already made.

The young man swung his feet around and onto the floor as he yawned.

"Hey-"

"Fuck!"

Jay put his hand to his chest, fur on the back of his head and neck stood on end as he turned to face Anderrick, who just stepped out from the small kitchen corner. "...sorry?"

Jay exhaled a soft sigh and shook his head.

"I got you some new clothes," Anderrick nodded his nose towards the dinner table where a small package sat. Jay walked over and looked over the package, opened it up and started to bring out some clothes.

"You've been out already? You were supposed to wake me, I thought."

Anderrick shook his head. "Haven't got the call yet."

"But you still managed to go out, and buy clothes."

"And breakfast," Anderrick added.

"...and breakfast..." Jay parroted, then looked at his phone. "...all before nine?"

"Yeah."

Jay scratched his head, how did he do all that without waking me up? The guy is like a ghost.

Anderrick paused and looked over his phone on the kitchen counter. It vibrated once, twice... then stopped.

"Get dressed, breakfast is in the fridge, nuke it. We need to go in five minutes."

Jay nodded, and gave off a playful yet lazy salute before he took the new clothes to his bed. At first glance they seemed to be his size, but weren't quite his style. Food was in the microwave, and Jay got dressed while he waited. Anderrick was already in the car with the duffel bag.

Dark jeans, a plain navy shirt... I guess it works... doesn't choke my neck too much either.

With an egg 'n' bacon muffin in his maw, Jay got in the car, planted his hands on the wheel and followed Anderrick's directions once more.

The drive took them several blocks deep into the city. They ended up in the factory district, parked by a rusty building. It was quiet. A few cars parked about.

"Do you have your gun?"

"Uh -- no? Do I need it?" Jay asked, immediately nervous.

"Mm, no. Should be fine," the wolf stepped out, grabbed the bag and approached the driver's window, "keep it running. If anyone comes out of that door before me, drive."

Jay's body felt light as he gripped the steering wheel and nodded.

"Y-yeah, sure..."

Anderrick proceeded to the warehouse, and entered via a lone door at the side of the building. Jay is left alone, tuned in to the rumble of an idle engine. Minutes passed with Jay trained on that door. The young wolf's eyes caught movement, darted a glance upwards to the roof of the building and observed a flock of birds burst up into the sky. His ears are hit by a soft pop sound a second later and then a whole series of faint pops rang out from the building.

Gunfire!

Jay released the parking brake, foot down on the clutch and revved. "Where is he..." he muttered as he watched the door.

A long moment passed with no sound before that door swung outwards. A man came running out that wasn't Anderrick, an avian. Jay released the clutch and spun those tyres on the spot.

The stranger raised a rifle, sighted on Jay, predatory eyes focused in.

Fuck!

From within the warehouse another few bursts of gunfire sound out and the feathered one falls to his knees and then forward, beak planted into the asphalt. The car caught traction as Jay saw Anderrick run out of the building and stamp over that lifeless bird. The maned wolf hooked the steering wheel, spun the rear of the car around with a screech, tyres kicked up small stones and smoke.

Anderrick came up on the car, Jay braked to let Anderrick in then speeds off.

The wolf panted as he started to peel his jacket back to reveal a big red patch that spread across his shirt. Jay drove them back to the motel, while Anderrick seemed rather calm with the bullet wound in his shoulder.

A quick look back and Jay saw the blood. "You're hurt?!"

"No shit."

"Fuck, fuck... what happened?"

"Bastards got greedy, just get on the main road and drive normal for fuck sake -- the last thing we need is cops getting nosy."

Jay grit his teeth and tried to focus on the road, which proved to be a challenge.

The whole ride back Jay was in a panic, his chest pumped with each heavy breath. When they arrived back at the motel the maned wolf jumped out to help Anderrick, but the big guy refused any help and just threw the duffel bag into Jay's arms to carry back.

Anderrick burst into the room and stumbled to the bathroom. He collapsed to his knees, then fell with his back to the tub. "Aid... first aid kit. Get it."

Jay dropped the bag in the living area, shut the motel door and darted to the bathroom. He searched through the drawers to find the first aid kit while Anderrick tore his shirt downwards from the shoulder for accessibility.

"Kid... stop... the bleeding."

Jay pulled the first-aid kit apart once he found it, emptied it right into the sink. "Alcohol... needle... suture..." instructed Anderrick. Jay's ears stood on high alert as he looked over the man. "I c-can't sir, I've never done this before," he groaned.

The big wolf bared teeth as he held out a hand. "Give me the kit."

Jay handed over the small suture set. _Fuck I'm useless, I'm not a doctor! I can't do this, _Jay told himself.

Anderrick's paw dropped, head rolled back.

The young man's eyes dilated as he witnessed the wolf blackout. Jay stood at a loss and chewed his claws, being the last thing Anderrick saw.
