#23 of The Legend of Rift Book II: Resurrection

Sithris winced in pain as he helped up the unstable fire dragon. The Black drake had been forcing them to take the trip slowly, dreading the knowledge that his friend was on borrowed time. Each morning, Sithris would help Rift stand, only for his paw to burn from the heat his friend emitted.

Their bond had evolved stronger than it had ever been. They laughed and joked at each other's silliness, huddling together for warmth in the evenings. The black dragon would feel his heart warm when Rift thought he was sleeping, whispering that he meant so much more to him than just a friend.

Sithris couldn't deny to himself that he loved the orange dragon, finding that even the smallest hug to set his breathing skyrocketing. He wanted to spend forever with the drake, which only hurt him. Rift was dying in front of him, and he was unable to find a cure.

They were only a few hours from Rift's home when the snap of a twig caught the attention of the two drakes. Both froze and took a defensive stance. Sithris scouted his side before questioning Rift.

"I don't see anything bud, do yo-"

The black dragon gulped. Dozens of glowing eyes peered through the dark forest. They were surrounded. They looked familiar to Sithris, like he had seen them before.

Their attention turned forward, clouds forming and spinning, a vortex moving toward the ground. As it made contact, the duo was pelted with branches and rocks, the now tornado roaring with ferocity. As it quickly died down, they were in awe at the new dragon where the tornado previously stood.

Looking about their age, the white and black drake bowed, chuckling as he waved off the mysterious creatures. He smirked, padding over to the two dragons. His voice was soft, but filled with confidence.

"Just the two I was looking for. Riften Myclonis, former Guardian of Fire. Sithris Agon, Master of Mechanics. I am honored to be able to stand face to face to you two."

Sithris laughed, shaking his head at the title. "While I am humbled by the formalities, I prefer the name; Tinkerer of cogs and shiny things. May I inquire about your name good sir?"

The white dragon gave a small nod, pure white eyes piercing the soul of any unsuspecting creature. "My name is Arcane, Dragon Master of the Dark Arts. Your friend may be familiar with what I can do, that forest will never grow life again."

Rift growled, thinking back to just after he left Warfang, the black smoke that had destroyed all the plant life and nearly him. He means business, but has his guard down. I may not have control of my fire, but I don't think he'd be a problem if I rush him.

The dark dragon sighed, looking to Rift. With a wave of a paw, a force field surrounded the orange dragon. Arcane shook his head, watching Rift attempt to ram through the magical shield.

" I have no idea why Keltin wants you so much, your mind is far too easy to read. Sithris however..." Arcane looked to the fascinated drake. "His mind is filled with knowledge that I haven't been able to access."

Sithris set his sachel down, the two beginning to circle each other. The skies becoming a swirling mix of clouds and lightning as the sun is blocked out. Sithris gulped, trying to anticipate the first move.

"While I can share your interest in knowledge, I cannot give you permission to probe my Cerebrum. I hope you understand that there are some secrets better left unknown."

Arcane laughed, getting lower to the ground. "Then I must apologize now, for I will have to do it by force."

With the boom of thunder, the two pounced, horns against horns. With nearly no effort, Sithris quickly overpowered the dark drake, slamming him to the ground. Arcane groaned, only to be flung around by his tail.

Sithris huffed, disappointment clear on his face. "I have to admit that I'm very underwhelmed by this encounter. I expected us to be at least on equal footing, so to see you fall so quickly, I'm saddened. Please, let my dear pest go, and you may leave."

Arcane's wince quickly turned into a grin, spitting a ball of energy from his maw at the trapped Rift. Sithris quickly chased after it, jumping into it at the last second before everything flashed. Sithris opened his eyes and gulped, a white energy floating around him. He was unable to move, trapped.

The dark drake chucked as he walked over. "You know, our little group was recruited for specific reasons. FeS just wanted revenge for his father, Nerscene was brought in for Rift's fear of spiders, Zaheera wanted to make you her slave by seduction. As for me, I can twist and break your mind until you are just an empty shell that expanded my knowledge. You fell right into my trap and now... you're mine!"

With the tap of a claw, Arcane dissolved into a dark smoke, quickly entering Sithris' body. The black dragon grunted, one eye turning white. The battle of minds had begun.

Arcane laughed as he took in his surroundings, the black dragon's vast knowledge available to him. With a snap of his paw, he set to work, bending the will of his victim. On the outside, Rift watched as his friend clawed at the ground.

"Let's see what all secrets I can find. Oh, awww, so sweet, looks like you have feelings for the orange dragon." Arcane chuckled, knowing he immediately struck a nerve.

Sithris flailed his head. "Whatever you're planning, don't. I don't want to harm you."

Arcane pondered a moment, grinning as he made movements with your paws. Everything he spoke echoed from his host's maw. "I see guilt, so much guilt. Guilt for harming your master, guilt for nearly killing the orange one... oh, this one is wonderful."

Sithris growled; "Don't say it, I don't want him to know."

The dark drake smirked. "You feel guilty that Rift will soon explode and you're trying to make the most of his time left."

Rift stared at his friend in shock. "Sithy... Is this true?"

With a pleading roar, Sithris covered his head. "Arcane, get out of my head. Please, you don't want him to take over."

Sithris' wish was too late, dark smoke flew out of his maw, solidifying into Arcane as the dark dragon slammed into the ground. Arcane groaned, staring in awe as red runes and red eyes appeared on the black dragon. Sithris had reverted into his Warped Form, maw open in intrigue.

"Dragon, while you failed your goal, you did nearly take over my vessel. You are very skilled in mind bending, I wish to know how you did that."

Arcane slowly backed up, shaking his head. This dragon before him was not the one who he nearly corrupted, it was much more powerful, and his piercing eyes terrified him. In just a blink, the drake had him by the throat.

"This will only hurt a lot."

The dark dragon screamed, feeling his energy being ripped from him as Sithris inhaled. In an instant, Arcane began to change, his magic gone. Rift watched as the force field faded, the orange dragon quickly running to Sithris as he tossed the former dark dragon to the ground.

Sithris glared at Rift, preparing an attack before being caught off guard. The orange dragon skidded in front of him. Instead of attacking the black drake, Rift lifted his paw, placing the black foot to his chest. Sithris grunted, the red in his eyes and the runes fading away. Under his own control once again, he gave a warm smile, turning around to watch the former dark dragon.

Arcane writhed in pain. With no dark magic, he was quickly losing mass. He continued to shrink until he had reverted to the size of a child.
