Rant's beginning

When the sun came up I was already awake, watching the window with a tired gaze listening to thrash metal out of the laptop on my bedside table. No one else was awake at five AM and why should they be? This time of day was for insomniacs and those who worked graveyard shifts. The cigarette in my left hand was burning away slowly and I wasn't paying attention anymore, just sitting and watching the dawn while waiting for the birds to wake up.

That was my cue to roll over and submit to the lucid dreams again.

It was my cue to slide back into my own personal Hell and let my demons take me into their hot grasp.

It was my cue to strip the gauze and bleed into the world that may or not be real.

Admittedly there was a fair amount of booze in my system. My distrust of every single human being had fueled the hours before that were spent in a bar that had a high school mentality. Meaning you only got attention if you looked like something. Me, I looked like my own type of species entirely. This meant I fell into the miscellaneous category, which isn't terrible but often ends up being terribly interesting.

Tonight was one of those 'nothing is happening, I might as well just go' nights, until I tried to leave. That was the first time I ran into Sydney Vile. Easily seven feet tall, with long dark hair, dark eyes and a strong build he was fairly hard to miss. It was only the fact that he'd decided to intercept me on my way for a cigarette that made me think he was interested at all... and now he was fast asleep beside me....

I glanced over at his sleeping form, thoughtless in the moment. Something made me feel like he was here for a reason and I just didn't know it yet. As I was watching him, his eyes fluttered open and he pulled me against him.

"Why aren't you sleeping, girl?" he asked, his face pressing into my neck.

"I need to hear the birds first..." I lied, slightly breathless at his growling voice.

He laughed softly, a hand trailing along my stomach, "Liar... you're nervous. I can feel it."

I sat up on my elbows and looked at him, "Now why would I be nervous with a beast like you beside me? You'd protect me, wouldn't you?"

"Hmm..., " He sat up, staring down at me, "This is harder than I expected..."

Okay... now why did everyone I ended up liking end up being so weird? I looked up at him, not really sure what to say and leaned my head agaisnt his chest, feeling his steady breathing. I didn't want to say anything because of how he had let his sentence trail off so I held my tongue and listened.

"Never mind, gorgeous." he reassured me, one of his hands running through my hair. "I'll tell you in the morning, okay?"

I grinned and laughed at him, "I dunno if you've noticed... but it is morning."

"Smart ass." he growled playfully, pulling me on top of him and into a kiss.

Something burned deep inside me, and I'm not talking passion. Something in my head started to snarl at him, and suddenly I had him gripped to me, my form rumbling against his. He tore away and deviously smirked down at me. The expression made me almost want to hurt him as it was somewhere along like lines of "I know something you don't know!" I frowned and rested my chin against his chest, watching him.

His grin widened, "Now what's that look for?"

"You found me for a reason, didn't you?" I asked.

"Mmhmm... he told me you were smart..."

I raised a brow at him in confusion, "Aaaaand who's he?"

"Your father..."

My eyes narrowed and I pulled away, now glaring at him. I had never known either of my parents or anyone that knew anything about either of them. Since I was a child I'd been passed through the system several times until I was old enough to throw them a big "FUCK YOU!" and go out on my own. The worst part of this was it sounded like my father knew me... or things about me anyway.

"You know my father?" I asked.

He grimaced at my reaction, "I... I kind of work for him. He sent me here to get you because you're not... developing properly."

"Umm... what... the fuck? What does that mean?" I demanded. I should've known someone this pretty wasn't just wanting my company.

"Calm down, Rant... it's okay. There's nothing wrong with you, but I need to show you somethin'." He told me, rolling me onto my back and pinning me down.

I started to breathe faster out of anxiety, his massive body pressing me into the bed and his dark eyes keeping onto mine. I didn't appear able to find any words at the moment, and as he looked down at me I slowly started to calm down. I noticed his brown eyes start to change color, a dark purple hue stretching out from the center of the pupil and slowly taking over the whole eye. He smiled down at me, showing a newly grown set of vicious fangs almost 2 inches long at the front. I couldn't move, but I could feel the rest of his body shifting as well, a long tail covered in steel grey fur twitching in the air behind him like a cats might. He was also apparently growing taller and thicker by the second, his muscular form slowly growing fur all over. The fur rubbed against he as he shifted, and I found it to be ridiculously soft and thick as I reached up in awe and ran a hand through it. His face was the last thing to transform infront of me. his jaw cracking and elongating until he had a slight underbite, bottom fangs sticking up like killer knives. Two thick horns protruded at an alarming rate from the sides of his head just above a pair of goat-like ears with the tips curled with hair like a lynxs.

"Baby...," He growled through his new body, "I'm your own personal demon."

I shuddered beneath him, idly wondering why this wasn't scaring me at all. I reached a hand up and ran it along his muzzle, being careful around his fangs. I even smiled up at him, leaning up and kissing his chin. It should not have been so comfortable to be trapped underneath this beast, but it felt right somehow.

I looked at my hand in surprise, feeling my ears pin back. Ears... pin... back... my hand was covered in smooth white fur with dog-like claws at their tips. Infact... my whole body was covered in white fur and my feet looked like paws as I peered down my body in shock. How the fuck didn't I notice I was growing horns or a muzzle for that matter? I lifted a hand to my head and felt along my snout, down to my new, doggish and black nose.

"What..." was all I got out before he pulled me into a delicate kiss.

"Rant, you're the devil's spawn and he wants you to know he's been watching. You've never been alone aa it's been my job to watch over you until he felt you were ready to accept this gift." He told me, his eyes sparkling with something that looked like adoration.

"You... really?" I felt like I should've been repulsed, but honestly I was happy.

He grinned, his long tongue licking across my forehead, "You're a hell hound, girl."

"Good to know." I said, laughing at the strange feeling. "Your fur's really soft..."

He snickered and rolled over pulling me ontop of him again as I ran my hands through his fur, "You are acting like you're on ecstacy..."

"Well, I'm not." I told him, snuggling into his chest.

Shortly after the exchange I fell asleep with my head resting on his chest, the music in my room still screaming on as I drifted off. The lucid dreams never came though, and my demons felt no need to crawl out from under my bed. Something had stopped the darkness from creeping in.

I woke up, dizzy and strange but not hungover. Everything seemed to appear before me with a shocking clarity. It all felt... right. I stretched and looked up at Sydney who was awake, watching me intently. His purple eyes taking me in with a demon's intensity. He lifted a wickedly clawed hand and ran it over my head and down my neck, smiling all the while. I knew what happened last night wasn't a dream when I looked at him. It really left me no choice.

"Good morning." he rumbled.

I yawned and hugged him tightly, still tired and not wanting to say much.

He smiled, his chin falling onto his chest as I rolled onto him, to steal his body heat. He chuckled softly running has hands over my back and holding me still. "We have a lot to do today." he told me.

"We do?" I asked, not usually coherent until I had some form of caffiene in my system.

"Mmhmm, we sure do. We have to go on a trip."

"Road trip? I just met you..." I yawned, lazing happily.

He raised a brow, "You need to go see your father."

I immediately rolled off of him and sat up, my eyes narrowing on him as I thought of a response. This father of mine... the Devil, Lucifer... or whatever hadn't seemed to have had any interest in finding me himself, so why the hell should I go to him? I lifted my lip in a noiseless snarl and looked away from Sydney, fuming. I wasn't going to go anywhere. I didn't even know if this was the truth even if I couldn't deny the fact that I had changed.

"Rant?" He asked, sitting up and putting an arm around me as if to draw me against him.

I pushed his shoulder away and glared up at him. "I'm going to get coffee. You can come or you can stay, or whatever, but I need to wake up and think clearly before I even begin to talk anything over with you."

His brows arched up, an amused and smug gleam in his purple eyes, "You're going to go out like that?"

I wanted to hit him. I wanted to make him leave, but I knew he was right. I was just so damn comfortable around him that I had totally blanked out of the fact that I was indeed a demon at the moment, unless I had been slipped some seriously amazing hallucinogens the night before. I shook my head as if to shake the thought away and found myself looking down at my hands.

"I don't have a coffee maker..." I said, pathetically.

Laughing, he lifted my head up to look at him, the same amused expression on his face, "You're obviously not always going to look like this. You can change at will. I just have to teach you how."

"Look, Sydney... I don't even know how you got me into this body in the first place, or if it's even really mine, and I am starting to get seriously freaked out right now." I said, my voice easily pitching into hysterics, "If you can't honestly explain... no... PROVE that you haven't drugged me or found a way to switch my head with another body or something I swear to... whoever that you're going to need a new face before the day is done."

His jaw dropped slightly at my threat, a hint of something that may have been fear flickered across his face for a second, "You're serious?"

I leaned so we were nose to nose, "If I am who you claim I am, you should be scared. You better fucking believe I'm serious, or my minions will get you!"

"Uhh..." he started, one brow quirked in confusion, "girl, I'm sorry, but I'm the best 'minion' you've got."

"You're mine?" I asked, swooning slightly at the idea.

"Aaaand you're mood swinging..." he commented.

I lifted a hand as to hit him, but balled it up and punched at the bed instead.

"Okay, here. I've noticed you're not so bad with logic, so shut up and listen, gir--"

"You can be so rude to your owner?" I asked.

He rolled his eyes and sighed softly, looking back at me like he wanted nothing more than to strangle me, "Your dad owns me, I just happen to be attached to you, now shut up and listen... PLEASE!"

My ears pinned back slowly as I glared up at him, waiting for him to continue. There went my moment of swooning, and it became blatantly apparent that I was indeed mood swinging... like nobodies business. It was a lot to handle for anyone though, wasn't it? Twenty-one years was a long time to be left to my own devices after all. I'd built a sort of comfortable life just to exist. Nothing was glamorous about it, but it was mine and I'd done it alone just as I was raised. I closed my eyes slowly, motioning with a hand for Sydney to spout the logic.

"Everything in your life has always somehow worked out. Everything, even when it seemed bad it never really got as bad as it potentially could have, correct?"

"Coincide--"

"Rhetorical question, sorry. He originally gave you to his brother, your uncle, up here not knowing that your uncle was a very corrupt figure." He continued.

I raised my hand slowly, "There are things the Devil doesn't know?"

"Your father's a very busy man. He has billions of souls to keep track of just in order to keep his own kingdom from falling out of balance, he doesn't keep track of non-humans quite as well as he should... anyway," He cleared his throat and shifted back to his human form before my eyes as if to tease me with what I couldn't grasp yet, "When you were born, your father just wanted you away from any place your siblings could find you and they weren't supposed to be able to go near anything under your uncle's protection.

"Your uncle, Magnus unfortunately was not one above being bribed, and Morrigan, your sister, was able to 'buy' you back from him. What Morrigan didn't know was that while your uncle wasn't being watched, you were. You were watched over by me, actually." he added, looking proud.

"How old were you when you started keeping track of me?" I asked.

He grinned, "I was already one hundred. The youngest demon, until you were born."

"How is that possible? You don't age?" I demanded, shocked.

"Males stop aging physically at twenty-seven, and females at twenty-three. Are you done asking questions?"

I shrugged, "Probably not, but go on..."

He shook his head and leaned in to kiss my cheek, "It would be so much easier to just show you. I promise if I lied about anything you have full permission to... what was it? Tear my face off?"

I nodded, "Pretty much..."

"You'll come? I don't have to drag you kicking and screaming?" he asked, tilting his head slightly as he looked me in the eyes.

"That was an option?"

He grinned from ear to ear, "Nah, t'was the next step... this was just filler."

"Douche bag..."
