Chapter 2: Mobsters and Misunderstandings

The sun was gracing the horizon as Thomas reached Shed 2C. Unhooking the fence and sliding the wood panel aside he finally turned around grumbling. "Alright, I know you're there." Expecting a mobster or errant pokemon thinking him either curious or food, Thomas was shocked when the pink and yellow Hakamo-o stepped from the bushes. "Are you mad?!" Thomas whisper-shouted at the pokemon, glancing hurriedly left and right. "They're looking for you!" Seeing nobody else of interest, he quickly waved the pokemon in.

Both inside, Thomas reconnected the fence and slid the wall shut before letting out a sigh of relief. He walked past the Hakamo-o and sat on the row of old bus seats nearby. He took a few breaths, staring at the pokemon standing nervously in the middle of the room. "Take a seat." He sighed, smiling. "I thought you were headed north."

"Haka, hakamo ha." He said, slumping down next to the man before muttering something unintelligible.

"I'd love to know what made you change your mind." Thomas said offhandedly, commenting on how he had no idea what the pokemon was saying. He knew that as a trainer bonded with their pokemon, they would eventually learn each other's tones and mannerisms. But he'd known the Hakamo-o for barely a day, so anything from here on out would be a learning process.

Thomas wouldn't have to spend long guessing though, as a pink and yellow hand flicked a small business card at him. He fumbled to grab it but eventually held it up to read; It was the card he'd been given only an hour or so earlier. "I suppose you probably came across them just after we we... went our ways." he reasoned, met with a nod from the pokemon. "So I take it that was you watching me from the forest?"

The Hakamo-o cleared his throat before giving a non-committal "Mo." He pointed from his eyes to Thomas' then grabbed the card and imitated the man flicking it to the ground like he had before.

"Oh, you saw that." the pokemon nodded. "Well, they showed me a picture of you and some guy wearing..." He looked at the vest, and the unmistakable arrangement of badges on it's lapel. But finally up this close and lit better than in the cave, Thomas was able to see the blood stains around the collar. "He's gone, isn't he." The Hakamo-o stared at the ground, a tear rolling down his cheek as he sighed. "They did this, didn't they."

"Haka." The two syllables cut through the air like the swing of a sword. There was no doubt in the man's mind that his guess was true. "Haka, Hakamo. Ha... Hak..." The pokemon couldn't continue and instead burst into tears, his laboured sobbing comforted by Thomas' attempt at a hug. He was having difficulty getting his arms around the particularly sharp plates, but once he found the right angles he pulled the pokemon into a tight embrace.

"Let it out." Thomas sighed into the Hakamo-o's neck. "This place is safe, you're safe here." The pokemon returned the hug, wrapping it's long arms around the man as they sat on the couch in the cool - but dry - shed. "We'll rest tonight, and take the back streets to the pokemon center first thing in the morning. From there, well... Officer Jenny'll be able to help you better than I can."

Deep down Thomas felt his chance meeting with this exotic pokemon was supposed to be the start of a new chapter in his life. He could feel something, a kind of electricity in the air; and not just the residual charge left in his bones from that accursed Electivire. But he knew nothing about keeping this pokemon safe. Or how to approach a potential murder investigation given the state of the trainers vest zipped tight around the Hakamo-o's torso. Officer Jenny would be their best bet for sorting things out.

The Hakamo-o let out a deep breath before pushing Thomas back. He looked the man square in the eyes and spoke. "Hakamo-o, Hak, Haka. Mo." He pulled the large trainer bag up from the floor and unzipped a side pocket to reveal three pokeballs. The first was cracked down the middle, and even though he knew little about the workings of a pokeball, Thomas could tell that was never housing a pokemon again. The Hakamo-o pointed at it, then to his chest.

"Yours. I get it. Shame though." the pokemon gave him a quizzical look. "Well, if that were working I could just pop you in there and walk casually into the poke-center no problems." The pokemon seemed to think about it for a few seconds before shrugging with a stifled cuckle. "Ah well." Thomas echoed before pointing to the other two. "What about-"

"Hak." He interrupted the man, pulling the first one out. Then cautiously checking the area, he pressed the button and in a flash of light a small, somewhat fuzzy blue and black pokemon materialised at Thomas' feet.

"Deino?" It swung its head side to side, sniffing. If it had any eyes, Thomas couldn't see them through the mop of 'hair' on it's head. Somehow spotting the Hakamo-o, the yappy little pokemon leapt into it's friend's arms, nuzzling into the yellow neck affectionately. Eventually it realised the third individual in the room and it's demeanour changed. It practically growled it's next series of noises. "Deino...Dei! Deeeeiiiii...."

"Hak!" he chided the smaller pokemon, who seemed to calm a little but continued to stare at Thomas - if stare is the right word when you can't see one's eyes - while the Hakamo-o reached for the last pokeball. He extended his hand and made a 'keep calm' gesture with it, nodding as the man nodded back. Then pressed the button. Thomas was expecting something big and spiky, or angry with teeth. He was not expecting what he got.

"Sliiii-" The purple and green pokemon stretched it's nubby arms as it took a deep breath "-Gooo- Oo?" As the Sliggoo noticed Thomas it's smile quickly faded into open mouthed curiosity. It began prodding the man's leg, turning to Hakamo-o for either permission or an explanation, Thomas couldn't be sure.

"Are- Were these his pokemon as well?" Thomas looked to the three of them, not one a pokemon he recognised. Hakamo-o ruffled through the bag once more to pull out a well loved pokedex. He held it out for Thomas to take. "You want me to-" The flouro pokemon pointed to the red device then to himself and his two companions. "Ah, gotcha."

Thomas tapped the power button and a chime told him it was ready. He'd seen other trainers use their various versions, so guessing the right combination of buttons and movements he held the pokedex out to scan his nearest new friend. "Sliggoo, the Soft Tissue Pokémon. Its four horns function as a highly sensitive radar system, picking up many different scents and noises." Hakamo-o tapped another button. "Dragon-type." The man swung the pokedex over to the small fluffy one. "Deino, the Irate Pokémon. Because Deino never stops biting anything it can, it is dangerous to approach without taking precautions."

The Deino growed, proud of its description. "Well that explains a bit." Thomas muttered, giving the 'irate' pokemon a smirk. He pressed the button Hakamo-o had before.

"Dark-Dragon type." Thomas nodded, taking a deep breath before pointing to his new friend in the vest. "It sheds and regrows its scales on a continuous basis. The scales become harder and sharper each time they're regrown. This individual appears to be a Shiny variant. Dragon-Fighting type."

"Shiny?" Thomas questioned, looking Hakamo-o up and down. Then he noticed the difference between the pokemon's skin and the one in the Pokedex. "Oh, I got it. Sorry, I forgot; I mean, I know some pokemon have different coats, but I've never seen one." Hakamo-o nodded, looking a little sheepish. "Don't get me wrong, Iove the colours you have, so much brighter than the one in the picture." Hakamo-o's expression turned to blushing. Thomas began blushing as well, so decided to change the topic. "So, you're all Dragon type? Was your trainer a Dragon trainer?"

"Slii?" The purple and green pokemon looked up to Hakamo-o with big glossy eyes. "Sliggoo?" Hakamo-o looked from the Sliggoo to Thomas and back. Before he could speak, the Sliggoo spotted it's trainer's vest. And the blood upon it. It stared in open mouthed horror at the sight. "Sli... Sliggoo! SLIGGOO!" It turned on the spot, unable to decide which way to run. It's sudden realisation dawning on Thomas as he acted quickly, picking the slug-like pokemon up and pulling it into a tight hug. "S-s-s-s...li-i-i..." It sobbed into the man's chest as Deino caught on to the situation as well.

"Haka, hakamo..." He tried to soothe his fellow pokemon, and it worked to a small degree, though it didn't come close to closing the now open hole in their hearts. Hakamo then began a long speech in his pokemon language, looking between the other Dragon types as he went. Thomas assumed it was an explanation of recent events. At one point Hakamo-o tugged on the vest and bag, making the other two resume their weeping. Eventually he pointed to Thomas while throwing punches in the air before waving his hand to indicate the room around them. He looked to Thomas and cracked what the human thought was a kind smile.

"I don't know what you've been through," Thomas said, causing all three pokemon to face him, the Sliggoo looking up at him with teary eyes "But the least I can do is give you shelter here tonight, and get you to Officer Jenny in the morning." The Sliggoo hugged him even harder, Thomas returning the affection as the Deino jumped from Hakamo-o's lap to his in an attempt to join in. Hakamo-o looked genuinely surprised a the act, looking at the three with a raised eyebrow before shrugging and walking over to wrap his arms around the lot of them.

It took a few minutes before the emotion that caused the hug dissipated, the group sighing and disengaging one by one before the sentiment became awkward. Hakamo-o walked back over to the bag and pulled out a small packet of Poke-treats. He flicked one each to the other two pokemon - who caught them easily with their mouths - before offering one to Thomas. He laughed, waving the offer off. "Thank you. Only once have I tried those, never again." His stomach growled in protest but the man politely coughed through it. "I'll get one of the burned loaves from the bakery in the morning. I'll be fine." He had survived on less, but not in quite some time.

Hakamo-o nodded, withdrawing the offer but taking one of the treats for himself before putting the pack away again. Thomas indicated for the three to follow him. "C'mon, it's warmer up here." He climbed up to a structure originally set up to be a a series of hoists to get the busses off the ground, but had been converted into a rag and hay bed out of sight of anyone who might take a peek in through the dusty windows. Once the three were up the top, he could hear the groan of metal taking their weight. "Maybe you three should spend the night up there. I'll stay down here. Oh-" He grabbed the trainer's backpack and flung it up to a very panicked looking Hakamo-o. It was heavier than he'd expected, but given it's previous owner was a dragon-type trainer, he probably had all sorts of interesting tools in there for the job. Hakamo-o quickly checked the contents before breathing a sigh of relief.

"I'll give a shout if I hear or see anything." The Sliggoo chirped, waving goodnight to the man while the Deino was nowhere to be seen; presumably having curled up and part-way asleep. Hakamo-o looked down at Thomas with an expression the man could have sworn was sadness for the briefest of moments before smiling and waving goodnight as well. "Good night." He waved back up at them, sliding behind one of the massive, dusty engines that lined the shed wall.

He thought back on the last two days as his body drifted off to sleep. Two days. He'd only made it two days before everything brought him back here. Maybe the Professor was right. Maybe he didn't have what it took. Darkness consumed Thomas as exhaustion finally caught up with him.

But it was voices that woke him. "I'm tellin' ya; condensation like that don't build up without there being someones inside." Thomas was awake with a start, he could see flashlights beaming in through the window as the voice spoke again. "There's gotta be a way in."

"Padlock says otherwise." Another voice spoke up. That one Thomas recognised even in his drowsy state. The raticate-faced man. "I'll check this way." The game was up. Thomas threw a loose bolt up into the makeshift pokemon nest above him; a startled Hakamo-o blinking down, lit by the occasional ambient light striking the inner shed walls through dusty windows. Thomas gestured for them to be quiet and to lay low before taking a deep breath. He fumbled for that card the man had given him that Hakamo-o had retrieved. Then with a deep breath he walked over to one of the windows.

Thomas tapped twice on the pane, getting the attention of one of them. There's a commotion from outside then both men appear at the window, the flashlight beams shone within blinding the homeless man as he indicated for them to move around the side with the secret entrance. There was a very narrow gap between the fence and shed, and the two men made a significant racket getting through to the hole Thomas moved aside for them. But it was late enough and far enough from the watchhouse that hopefully security hadn't noticed.

"Hey," the raticate-faced man spoke up as he stepped into the shed "I know you, you're that guy from the road." He slapped Thomas on the back. "Nice place ya got here."

"Entryway could use some work." The second man hauled himself through the hole before straightening himself out. He was much larger and much more muscular than the first man, and Thomas could see this night ending particularly badly if he didn't play his cards right.

"Sorry," Thomas said sheepishly, walking over to the chairs he'd arranged to face away from the pokemon. "I'm not used to guests." He motioned for the two men to sit. "I'd offer you a drink, but I'm kinda..."

"S'okay. We're fine as is." The larger man replied, refusing the seat. Much to Thomas' dismay, the other man refused as well. "I guessed you may be a little - shall we say - unaccustomed to keeping company." Thomas couldn't tell if the faint smile was genuine humor or sarcastic in nature. "Besides, that's not why we're here."

"Yeah. Yes." Thomas said, faking trying to remember which pocket he'd put the business card in. "I remember. Some guy and his pokemon."

"And you're sure you haven't seen em?" The skinnier man asked, looking around the room.

"Got back here not too long after I saw you. Nobody to busk for so I went to bed." It's then Thomas spied an empty poketreat wrapper on the floor. It must have fallen out of the backpack at some point.

Unfortunately the larger man spotted it at the same time. "That a fact?" he said, walking over to it, his suit audibly stretching, struggling to contain the muscles within as he picked up the foil remains. He turned to face Thomas accusatorially, holding the wrapper up as though evidence of his lies.

"A guy's gotta eat." He said, blushing as he looked to the floor. Fortunately his mediocre acting was amplified by an unexpected and well timed stomach growl, so loud it reverberated back down from the roof. "Tastes like crap, but... well..."

"Better than starvin', eh?" The skinny guy wrapped an arm around his shoulders. "Look, we ain't in the business of takin' in folks unless they got somethin' ta offer." Internally Thomas sighed in relief that they had taken the lie so easily. Especially when the larger man crumpled the foil up and tossed it into an oil drum on the other side of the room. But he still kept his emotions hidden. The skinny guy turned Thomas to face him. "You find us those Pokemon, we'll get ya off the street."

"Beggar or Busker?" The larger guy asked harshly.

Thomas feigned insult. "Busker. I- I sing." he couldn't mention the instrument, if these guys were with the grey-suited man, then he may have told them about it.

"Good." His answer seemed to go over well with the big guy, who smiled and clapped him on the shoulder. "A man who asks to be given something for nothing has no purpose. But someone who gives something - even the simplest beauty of music - deserves to be rewarded, if only for trying."

"My father always told me to BE the change you want to see in the world." Thomas said, his eyes dropping to the floor in sadness.

"Smart man your father." The smaller guy offered before backing off towards the side door. I think we've seen all we need to here." The big guy turned to join him. "You find those pokemon, you call us. We can change your life."

"Wait!" Thomas' call had both men turn around hopefully, and had Hakamo-o gripping the bag tightly, the other two looking at their companion scared as the three humans stared at each other below. "Wait... There's, there's an alarm on that door. Here." He moved back over to the panel and unhooked the chain-link fence to allow the two men back outside.

They shuffled past him, slapping him on the back as they went. "Remember. We can change your life." The big guy said as he extricated himself through the small opening. Those words felt partly like an offer, but also tinged with a threat.

Thomas replaced the fence and wall panel, he and the three pokemon remaining still until the two voices had trailed off. As the man turned back towards the nest though he was bowled over by a self-propelled Deino, the ball of angry fluff licking his face appreciatively. Hakamo-o carried Sliggoo down the ladder before it too leapt towards Thomas to show it's gratitude. "Okay, okay... Shush..." Thomas tried, begging for the two to quiet down as he listened intently for the two men outside.

"Hak." A large pink and yellow scaled hand reached out to give him a helping hand up, which Thomas accepted. The Sliggoo stuck to his chest as he rose, while the Deino got scooped up in one arm. Hakamo-o looked slightly embarrassed as he glanced back and forth between his companions. "Hakamo. Oh." He said finally, nodding at Thomas before wrapping his arms around the three of them. Thomas sighed into the hug, wrapping his free arm around Hakamo-o as he finally let his body calm from the intense disturbance.

"Come on." He sighed. "Back to bed. We still have a lot of night to get through." When Hakamo-o released him from the embrace, he made motion to take the two back up to the makeshift nest. But he was quickly pulled back to his sleeping nook by a smiling Hakamo-o. "It'll be colder down here."

"Hak."

"And not as much room." Hakamo-o turned and stared at him, eyebrow raised. "Okay, okay. Just want you to get a good night's sleep too." Thomas carried the other two over to the small space between the engines and the wall, a well worn patch of old and padded newspaper greeting them. "It ain't much-" Hakamo yanked his arm, bringing the man crashing down onto the makeshift mattress. But whether it was a fighting move or not, Thomas barely felt the impact, as though the last moment he was nothing but a floating feather. With Hakamo once again laying down behind him, and the other two curled up at his chest, Thomas felt himself drifting off to sleep. "-But it's home."

The next morning Thomas awoke with two odd sensations. The first was quite a strange one as it turned out Deino was purring, to a certain degree. It wasn't the same as a feline purr, and it wasn't a dog's growl. It was somewhere in-between. But the other thing Thomas could feel reminded him of that time back in the cave. He could feel a hot bulge against his back. The realisation brought to attention the bulge in his own pants: a ferocious case of morning wood taking hold.

He could feel Hakamo-o very lightly grinding against him, but he was too stunned to turn around and look. Once again the thought of what you were and were not supposed to do with a pokemon ran through his head, and while the rules didn't specifically have anything against it, the general ethical view of the public did. But he wasn't in the public right now. And this wasn't his pokemon. Hakamo-o wasn't doing this because Thomas had asked, or even that his trainer had asked. Which is why Thomas decided that - despite all his internal alarms - that he would push back against Hakamo-o's tiny thrusts.

The movement from behind the man stopped. Taking a deep breath, Thomas gently reached back and laid a hand on Hakamo-o's thigh, fingertips sliding along the smooth scaly skin before squeezing the pokemon as a sign of comfort. Hakamo-o pushed forward once and stopped. So Thomas ran his hand further around the pokemon's thigh and up to it's rear, pulling him closer in the hopes it would seem like enough permission to continue.

It was. Gently the rhythm started again, with Hakamo-o pushing his erection against the man's lower back. Thomas soon felt Hakamo's fingers as they grabbed at his thigh, quivering with every push forward as the pokemon became more brave; the thrusts becoming more and more powerful each time. But they were never powerful enough to wake the sleeping duo at Thomas's chest.

Hakamo-o's breath was hot on the man's back, the pokemon working itself up as he ground away. But Thomas had other ideas. His hand slid from around Hakamo-o's arse to push down the waistband of his pants, the warmth of Hakamo-o's groin instantly heating his cheeks as he reached back again and grasped the pokemon's slowly pistoning member. Hakamo-o froze as the human guided his throbbing cock between the man's legs. Then it was Thomas' turn to shudder and freeze as he felt the pre-slicked member press against his balls as it slid gently past. Hakamo-o proved to be equipped to scale, given his already larger than average build. When Thomas felt the pokemon's hips meet his, the strange cock had pushed itself so far between his legs that it was tip to tip with the man's own.

Letting his body act without thought, Thomas' hand slowly slid from Hakamo-o's waist and across his own to grasp the two members in one grip. He could just get his hand around his own cock on a good day, and the two together were far more than just hand could cover. But with a slow, twisting movement he began to pump both at the same time. Sliding down the two throbbing rods brought about sensations Thomas had never dreamed of; their asynchronous heart beats, tiny twitches from both him and Hakamo-o setting the other off on their own twitches, and the quite frankly ridiculous amount of pre-cum leaking from the more bestial cock.

Thomas was in heaven. And when Hakamo-o wrapped his own, larger hand around the two cocks the man had to stifle a moan to prevent him from waking the other two. He already felt embarrassed enough doing this with them purring at his chest, he didn't want them to wake to the erotic display. But Hakamo-o either didn't notice or didn't care, his hand began moving faster and gripping tighter. Thomas was getting close, the raw energy of it all mixed with the grunts and light moans from behind him as years of pent up sexuality came close to bursting from him.

He couldn't hold back. The man's moan was low and needy as he fired his seed across the floor onto the rusted engine block. Hakamo-o's handjob came to a climax as well as the pokemon seemed to be pushed over the edge by Thomas' orgasm. The bright pink cock erupted with creamy white seed, the blast dwarfing the man's tenfold. Ropes of jism splattered against the engine block as he bucked between Thomas' legs, heavy breathing falling hard on the man's back as he released his own pent-up need.

After several minutes of panting and twitching, the two unexpected lovers came down from their collective sensual high. Thomas glanced bleary eyed down at the two pokemon still resting at his chest, both seemingly still asleep though he could swear the Sliggoo was smiling coyly. As his heartbeat slowly returned to a peaceful pace Thomas craned his neck backwards, doing his best to look at the smaller 'big spoon' that had rolled exhausted onto their back. Hakamo-o looked up at him, still red in the cheeks. "Hak."

Thomas didn't need a translator to know what the pokemon had said. "No, thank you." He shuffled around a little, pulling up his pants before turning to lie on his back. A stirred Deino grumbled at the removal of warmth and jumped up onto Thomas' chest. "Oof!" he grunted before patting the blind little pokemon. "Thank you for giving me hope."

"Hak?" a pink and yellow arm reached up to brush against Thomas' cheek, removing a tear that had barely formed. "Hakamo, Mo?"

Thomas wasn't exactly sure what his new friend had asked, but he took a guess and sighed. "Years ago - back when I was still at school - I used to live with my family a few towns over. It was a small farm and we were happy. But then the neighbors started selling their properties, and eventually our house was the last left. Some big corporation wanted to mine the area or something, and wanted everyone out." Sliggoo had woken, yawning in the pre-dawn rays of light creeping in through the grimy windows before resting its head on Thomas's shoulder, listening intently.

"Dad didn't want to sell. They kept offering more money but the farm was our farm, and we didn't want to lose it. Then one day while... while I was at school..." Thomas' mind betrayed him, playing the sounds of the sirens as the fire engines raced past the windows, a Blastoise and several Wartortles hanging on for good measure. He choked back the tears, clearing his throat. "The fire razed everything. The house, the barn. Even Grandpa's shack." The two pokemon at his sides hugged him as best they could as the Deino's strange purr deepened. But the tears could not be stopped.

It was a while before he could speak again. "Apparently the insurance forms were improperly filled out and with no adult to hold title to the land it was sold off to pay for the cost of the funerals. I... I went to a foster family for the last few months before my birthday, then I was declared an adult and had to live on the streets. I didn't finish school, and while I tried working jobs in the town, it was all too painful to see the mining teams coming in and out of town. So I hitched a ride out."

With a deep sigh he gestured to the room in general. "And I've been here since. Not this shed specifically, but in town. I sing- well, used to." he glanced over to the satchel containing the broken pieces of instrument, eliciting another sigh wavering with sadness. Then with red eyes he turned back to Hakamo-o. "The day before I met you I failed my Pokemon Trainer test for the tenth time." he closed his eyes and took a deep breath "By 'fail' I mean I passed, but without income the professor won't let me choose a pokemon. So I was on my way up north to a Nanab Berry farm. I could pick for a couple years and save up, maybe try again up there. Better than busking. But..."

"Haka. Hakamo." The pokemon looked away from Thomas and sighed.

"It's not your fault." Thomas replied, unsure if he'd guessed right given Hakamo-o's tone. "Even if I knew how it would play out, I'd still have helped. Thugs like those took my life from me, I'm not about to let them take someone else's." Hakamo froze, tears welling up in his large eyes. "I- I'm sorry, I didn't mean it like that." Both Hakamo-o and Sliggoo began weeping, but to the man's surprise, they hugged his arms for comfort. Thomas readjusted himself, stretching his arms out underneath the pokemon before sweeping all three of them into a hug. "It's okay, you're safe. And as I promised, this morning we're gonna go in to get Officer Jenny and sort this all out. It'll be okay."

"It'll be okay."
