#3 of Monster Mankind

John felt himself painfully return to reality. His brain wasn't as blinded by his agonizing trauma. It's only been a week and already he is repeating the experience he just had the week prior. His vision manages to comprehend his environment. He was at the clinic, and apparently, a vomit bag was next to him filled with his bile and semi-digested meats.

"Are you with me?" the voice of the nurse calls out to him.

"I..."

"You're going to be fine. Last time you had a trauma attack was last week, though I suppose it wasn't as bad as last time?"

"Y..." the pain dulled further and further he focused on the voice. "Yeah, I d-don't feel like I'm dying."

"That's good, though, Mr. Ephenel is here to see you."

He didn't catch the words spoken to him, rather, he felt the presence of the angel of death close in on him like water swallowing some pile of sand. John tensed up as his veins turned cold despite already being a spirit. With the strength he could muster, he grabs the doggie bag and pukes more of his lunch and shrinks down to his base height of seven feet tall.

When Ephenel had opened the door and let himself in, John felt like he wanted to puke up whatever bile he had left. His wings were concealed but his aura remains unchanged and that did not help with the recovery of the poor wendigo. John tries his best to remain calm as the angel's words continue to give him a sense of incoming doom.

"John Carter?" began the angel.

"Yes. That's me-!" the aura once again caused his trauma to resurge slightly, curling up in reaction to the pain in his stomach and aching brain.

"Oh. I apologize for my intrusion, especially with someone in recovery. But I have to ask you a few things, it's quite urgent."

"Fine. Please, just make it quick." urged John.

"Very well." taking out a notepad, he would write down what he says. "During your time during ability assessments, were you aware that you punched Sarah Gloria?"

John tried to remember, with little to no result. "N-No, I only remembered what happened after, she seemed to get sick after I punched her."

"I see. You caused quite a commotion, especially on your first day too. Things aren't looking good for you right now."

"I-I know I did something wrong, I just seemed to blackout after she tried to petrify me. I...I didn't feel anything else until I just puked again all over the floor." John looked away, regretting what just happened to Sarah. "I didn't mean to hurt her like that."

"It's fine, I know that you didn't mean to. Though, that can't be said for Sarah's parents."

"I...what?"

"They're accusing you of assaulting her. You were supposed to be sent to court tomorrow but I had stated that your recent discharge from the hospital and your two trauma attacks have been damaging to your health overall. If you were to undergo a third trauma attack, I think your stay in the hospital would be more than just a week."

"Whoa...whoa whoa whoa! Court?! As in being charged for a crime?!" the realization hit the wendigo like a freight train.

"Yes. That court. Now, I am aware you haven't done this on purpose. So I am acting as your defendant for the case."

John puts his skinny hands to his face whimpering in distress. "Oh God, I didn't think I would end up in court for something I don't even remember doing."

"It's not to worry about too much, I also hired a lawyer for you. Since you are a new immigrant to Mythos State and the fact that you don't have a job during this time, I hypothesized that you are incapable of hiring a lawyer."

John looked down, he knows that he's currently unemployed, so hiring a lawyer with his own money would be detrimental to his current savings. "Thank you. I can't thank you enough."

"There's no need. It's just that the Gloria family has always been protective of their golden child. Sarah has always been under the guardian watch of her family line, so I guess you could say she is a bit...spoiled." he adjusted his reading glasses, something that the wendigo didn't notice until now. "Though, there is one strong evidence that they're accusing you of."

"What is it?"

"Since wendigoes can alter the moral principals of a person, you have been accused of changing her moral borders and coercing her to attack you. Thing is, their research was pretty thorough. During ICU they managed to scan for any mental abnormalities, they detected some kind of outside force that had indeed shifted her moral principles at that time."

"But it wasn't me!" John defended himself. "I said and swore to never use that power!"

"Indeed you have. Mrs. Aquas also testified in your defense and quoted your statement. However, this is going to be a problem for you. It means you have abilities that are beyond your control, meaning you are a danger to society if we don't have this problem of yours fixed."

"But..." John wanted to protest, he really wanted to. But with logical reasoning, it was hard for him to defend himself. Now the outlook of his life felt like everything was beginning to fall apart, all because he punched a girl and caused some drama happened shortly afterward.

"I am well aware that you meant no harm to anyone. Your soul and humanity tell me that."

"My soul told you that?" John tilted his head.

Ephenel chuckled. "Being an angel of death meant that I can see a person's past. You aren't a violent person, at least not inherently. Though, you do have tendencies to raid the fridge and watch-"

"Don't!" cried John.

"Sorry. A habit I'm trying to break." Ephenel apologized. "Fortunately, since I am here in your defense, the abilities of an angel of death can turn things in your favor." he closes his notepad. "A person's past can't lie after all."

"Once again I thank you for helping me. I don't think I can handle all of that on my own." John expressed his gratitude.

"There is nothing that you need to worry about, not while you're in my university." Ephenel smiled. Despite being an angel of death, the aura changed to a manifested feeling of nostalgia, something which John felt memories surface to his mind, like a time where he used to be happy and had never had a passing thought of being something else than human.

"...what should I do now?" asked John.

"Are you still well enough to continue?"

"I...I should be."

"Do you want to continue your ability assessment?"

"I mean, I am finished, right?"

"Well, there is one last ability you should have. Since you are classified as a spirit, you should have the ability to possess people."

"Like a demon possession?"

"More or less. Though, possession is one of the least controllable abilities in Mythos State, at least among immigrant people. You have nearly all the abilities of a wendigo, if you are to have possession of all the abilities of wendigos, you will have to take "Conscious Control" classes as part of your mandatory course. Any person with access to three or more of their abilities will have to do so."

"So, I'll need to take Conscious Control classes anyway. I already had shown I can barely control over three abilities."

Ephenel nodded. "You will be placed with Mrs. Luna, she's an easy enough guess of what kind of monster she is."

"Werewolf?"

"Indeed. Just like you, she has all the abilities of a werewolf. We tend to group people with teachers who have the same quantity of powers, but we also ensure these powers are potent as well. Mainly to keep...unruly students in check." said Ephenel.

John did not want to say anything further. Rather than asking the question if she was a nice person, he wanted to find out for himself.

He now wished that he asked what Mrs. Luna was like. To the most basic description of her, Mrs. Luna was...something else. John witnessed her werewolf form. A brown fur coating with darker patches splashed over her body as if she had been slapped with mud all over the place. Emerald eyes capture his vision, he was sure they stared right down to his soul where the pair spear him to the wall behind him. Underneath her school uniform was muscles that bulge out slightly behind the cloth. And, as any woman would have, a pair of breasts. Though...John found himself staring at them since they were pretty big, which she corrected him by snapping her fingers to get his attention, which surprised him since he did see paw pads on her palms and fingers where claws like curved daggers gently touch the clipboard she holds. Her thighs were pretty thick and with digitigrade legs keeping the werewolf upright. It made John dizzy, looking at them reminded back when he discovered his wendigo self, and how alien yet familiar his hooven legs were despite walking with them after all those elusive years ago.

"Haha," Mrs. Luna laughed. "It's almost like a book club."

John looked around the room, there were at least three others. There was a lion man, whose mane was like staring at a portrait of the sun. He seems to glow like embers in a dying bonfire where his eyes were of contrast. It was like staring into the ocean, his body was like the star that lights the world around them, but his eyes seem to swallow what light surrounds it, leaving a deep abysmal blue in place of the light. He wore some shorts and a T-shirt, one of a higher company, seen how the logo was right in the middle of the entire shirt. From the faded smirk on his face, John could guess that this lion person was a bit egotistical. Which irked John just a bit.

Another was some woman that seemed to be part horse, short hair that was mostly covered by a red and black toque hat. Most of her body was covered in clothes, a purple and pink sweatshirt covers nearly everything except her hands which her fingernails were black. She wore khaki jeans, and she has human feet, seeing that she was wearing baby blue sneakers... Her phone was in her hands, she seemed to be concentrating on her phone. But John had the unsuspecting feeling that she was listening, shown by how her horse ears swiveled ever so slightly to the noise of the lion man shifting in his chair. What strands of hair seen outside of her hat was an ashen grey shade, complimenting her milk chocolate brown coat. But amidst the grey shade were three golden strands. The wendigo pondered, perhaps her hair was naturally blonde but she has dyed her grey. But what drew his attention to this horse person was her eyes. They were like opals, the light from her phone reflecting on her irises as they shimmer with different pastel colors of the rainbow. The overall color of her eyes was still a white tone, but the shimmering reflections of her eyes were so beautiful to the wendigo.

The last person was a rabbit, he was shorter than everyone in the room, narrow eyes that would slightly hide his pale pink eyes. His attire was that of a private school uniform, khaki shorts, and a red polo shirt. He seemed to be a star model student. John paid no mind to him, he seemed average, just like him.

"Now, let's get this over with," said Mrs. Luna. "Do you want to start..." her hand starts moving over, her claw zoning in on the rabbit. "Chen Kuo?"

Chen Kuo nodded. He quickly got up on his rabbit legs, using the seat so he could seem taller as to get everyone's attention. "Hello everyone." Chen's tone was something that John could interpret as happy to meet everyone. The same thing could be said for the smile that was on his face, stretched out in such genuine greetings to the two others in the class, including the wendigo. "My name is Chen Kuo, it's very nice to meet you all. My family had just moved not only to the United States but also to Mythos, I am very happy to meet all of you." John noted that Chen's accent was heavy in Chinese. "I'm a moon rabbit, but my parents had been born on earth, but I do hope I get to go to the moon one day."

"Hehe, nice to meet you Ching Chong." said the lion person.

"It's Chen Kuo." the rabbit corrected.

"Nice to meet you, Chen Kuo." Mrs. Luna quipped, quickly turning to the lion with her soul spearing eyes. "You're next since you like to talk."

The lion stared at the werewolf, but growled and sighed, standing up. His glowing body seemed to fade ever so slightly. Perhaps Luna had hurt his pride, which John internally laughed ever so slightly. He believed that the karma was going to come to this lion one way or another. "I'm Chris Sol. I'm a Nemean lion. So that means..."

He turned to John, which he felt uncomfortable. The pupils of the Nemean lion thinned out. John remembered something about cats doing that when they're going to attack.

"Uh...I'm sorry?" John didn't know why he said that. He felt like he apologized for doing something that he didn't do, or something that he was no part of.

The wendigo didn't have time to react as the Nemean Lion swung a meaty fist right to his skull. But a white faint blur zipped by and bounds right off his face, the blow the lion tried to land on the wendigo never landed as intended. The next thing happened, and the Nemean Lion seemed to be stunned, shown how he grasps his head. The horse woman looked over, taking her eyes off her phone after turning it off.

"I would've intervened, but it seems someone beat me to it," Luna smirked at Chen.

"I learned Taekwondo," answered Chen. "Being a bunny and all."

"What...what happened?" Chris mumbled through his addled state.

"You nearly attacked John Carter. What is wrong with you?" Luna hissed.

"I...I attacked John?"

"Wait..." Mrs. Luna paused, considering something. "You called Chen Kuo "Ching Chong", why did you say that?"

"Why would I say that? Isn't that racist? I mean..." The Nemean lion shook his head, recovering from the kick. "I guess I do have a few tendencies, but I try to keep them to myself."

John could metaphorically see the gears turning in the werewolf's head. Her eyes turn to the wendigo. "John? What did you think about Chris?"

"Why?" John tilted his head.

"Just...entertain me."

"...I...I thought he was a little annoying. Or I thought he was a bit egotistical."

"I see," said Mrs. Luna. "Hey, we're going on a field trip. Better get used to them, we're going to do this often."

Everyone followed the werewolf, keeping in a knit-tight group so they didn't get lost in the crowds of monsters walking. Soon they found themselves in front of a gate, where trees and various plants sway in the city breeze.

"Lesson one begins pretty soon. The park is our starting place," said Mrs. Luna. "Don't wander too far from me, even if you did, my nose can track you."
