#7 of Zombiology

A rhino gets a zombie stuck to his horn and they both have a very bad day.

Another short in the Zombiology collection of animals versus zombies.

The zombie squirmed in an attempt to get into a better position with which to attack its prey. It let out a hungry moan and opened its mouth wide before attempting to take a large bite. It grasped a chunk of skin in its teeth and shook its head back and forth like a feeding animal as it tried to tear into the meat.

The rhinoceros gave a soft grunt as the zombie bit into the thick skin of his muzzle. The undead creature's blunt teeth did little more than irritate the much larger mammal, and he shook his large head in an attempt to dislodge the pest.

Unfortunately, the animated rotting corpse was firmly stuck on the large curved horn that had gored its middle. The undead flailed it's arm, grasping at any part of the rhino's face that it could reach. It's other arm, which had long ago detached at the elbow, swung around uselessly and occasionally bumped against a horn.

When the flailing hand smacked into the rhino's nose, he snorted irritably and attempted to charge the ever-present enemy attached to his face, but after several steps, he stopped and shook his head again. All he could smell was rot and death, overpowering all other scents. Even the freshly crushed grass beneath his feet could not filter past the overwhelming stench of decay.

The large old bull blinked and lifted his head, trying to locate his enemy that had made it all but impossible for him to graze in days. His hunger did not improve his mood. He made small charges every time he thought he'd located the annoyance, but he never seemed able to catch up despite it never being far away.

He lowered his head and tried to take in a mouthful of grass, but as soon as is his mouth opened, the shambler once more began to flail around, one of its feet smashing painfully into the rhino's sensitive nostril. Letting out a bellow of rage, the rhino once again lowered his head and charged.

He eventually wandered to the edge of a city, long abandoned by all but a few of the restless dead. Rusted hulks of metal that had once been cars littered the dirt highway like sleeping giants. Some of the hulks cradled fleshless skeletons skeletons in their bellies like macabre decorations.

The horned beast ambled along beside the silent dregs of civilization, occasionally tossing his massive head in vain attempts to dislodge his unwanted passenger. Occasionally he would stray close enough for the zombie's head to thunk across mirrors or open doors, which caused the unfortunate passenger to squirm even more from its perch on the beast's large horn.

Suddenly, as another of the vehicles was struck by the flailing shambler, the car let out a strangled honk as the alarm tried to draw power from the nearly drained battery. Spooked by the sudden noise, the rhinoceros bolted several steps before turning and facing his loud but immobile enemy. The car gave several more weak cries as the rhino stared it down. Suddenly the large mammal lowered his head and charged the squawking car, smashing into the door with a loud crunch. Glass from the shattered window tinkled down across his neck as he backed up and charged again, sending the car skidding sideways for several feet. A final charge nearly sent the animal's head right through the weakened metal of the crumpled door.

With the final slam of the rhino's head, the car let out a final weak cry and then went silent forever. Satisfied that yet another foe had been vanquished, the rhino gave a proud snort and tossed his large head. His ears twitched as he heard a crackling sound nearby.

The zombie groaned and grasped frantically to the face of its intended prey, but its body had been thoroughly battered by the attack and was beginning to fall victim to gravity. Another shake of the beast's head tore it's impaled body in two and it fell away to the ground with several consecutive thumps.

The hungry corpse could only wail in remorse as it helplessly watched the rhino turn and bolt several steps in the opposite direction.

The rhino, on other hand, felt the immediate lightening of it's already heavy head and took several prancing steps before finally being allowed to once more relax and graze.
