#39 of Dragon Hunter Saga

Oddly Ecthelon found a bottle of a quick recovery potion in Gilorndir's stocks, the problem is while the instructions near the bottle list that only a tablespoon is necessary it took the whole bottle to fix our healer. We were standing his workroom while we treated him, Alberich and Sir Iron went with a group of town guards to retrieve the injured from the bandits. Some of the farming unicorns willingly pulling a wagon for anyone to inured to walk on their own.

Gilorndir starts coughing hard as he comes out of the drunkenness, he shakes his head and says "whoa. If a sniff does that I know I'll be avoiding the funeral, as the Healer of the city I wish to declare anyone allowing someone below adulthood should lose their children." I walk over to him with a bucket just in case and he waves it away glancing at the now empty bottle of the curative.

"I won't need that, that potion is designed to remove any negative effects from being drunk. However," he picks up the bottle with a frown. "That was the entire stock of it, as we typically only use a tablespoon worth of it to treat severe drunkenness. I guess anyone attending the service will be out of commission until they are well again."

He rubs the back of his neck looking about and I ask, "how hard is it to make a new batch?" Gilorndir chuckles then looks to Ecthelon, "go on I'll be there after explaining the basics of magic to our Hunter. I'll need an outdoor hospital for those injured." Ecthelon nods his head and heads out the door and Gilorndir waves at one of his relaxing chairs near his luncheon table.

"Please sit and I'll let you know why it will take me time to make this up, you also need some magical background." He sits and grabs a wedge of local cheese and a knife and starts cutting it, "I need to eat something as Gods know how long I'll be working before I am done treating people today." He offers me some of the cheese and then takes out a piece of crusty bread and some fruit and starts cutting that.

Once he has the bread and fruit cut he takes a piece of the bread and starts eating, and the explanation starts. "You heard how Morrigan said their will be a cost to take out the Matriarch?" I nod my head and nibble on the cheese, "well that is because anything magical has some kind of cost associated with it." He indicates the cheese, "notice I am not eating that? While elves are not vegan, if you are a mage born healer you are. That is the cost to heal, any animal product we try to ingest will make us violently ill. A mage born gardener cannot eat fruits vegetables or grains."

He nods towards the outside, "the magical unicorns. They have a cost for their healing magics, they cannot use offensive magics. They don't work with their horn intact, however like in Cassie's case. A magical unicorn can use offensive magics, they just have to sacrifice their horns." I frown thinking about the exchange in the council chamber.

"What about that flagrant use of magic by Merlin?" I ask, as if magic has a cost it would be dumb to summon a chair out of no where just to be comfortable. Gilorndir smiles, "I'm pretty sure that the 'cost' of the spell for that chair was paid when he was much younger. As I have seen that trick, which is what it is; before. The mage has a bag of holding with a number of items for their comfort that they love contained within it. When they wish to use the item they just summon it, the 'cost' was paid when the spell is first cast. When they are done with it they just send it back into the bag, so it seems like a flagrant use of magic."

He looks at a blueberry thoughtfully, "the mages like to have people believe they are all powerful. It is best for a leader to know otherwise, or else they will use it against you later on." He eats the blueberry and looks me in the eyes, "those who are pure mage and not specialized lose some of their 'humanity' with every spell cast. I personally have more issue with them than Hunters turning evil." I nod my head in agreement, that can't be a good thing. {How old before a mage loses all rationality}?

Gilorndir nods his head as if he heard my inner thought, "this is why you seldom see a pure mage living with society as a general rule." There is a knock on the lower portion of Gilorndir's door and he looks towards it. "Yes can I help you?" He speaks to it and we can hear Cassie on the other side, "they will be returning in about two hours. There are ten individuals needing aid Healer. Hunter Gwen, according to Leaf there is a mutilated Pegasus in the group." I feel instantly angry, as I can imagine what she meant by mutilation. I reach out to Cheshire, {if what I think is wrong with the Pegasus . Can they grow back}? My friend didn't respond well, {that is a question for a healer don't you think}? I feel mildly embarrassed and turn to Gilorndir, who anticipated my question. "I think I can yes, but if I do I will probably be in bed for a few days after. So it is best if I examine that one last."

We both get up and head towards the market where Ariawyn was instructing everyone in how to set up 'beds' for quadruped residents. Hekkogar was behind her looking like she'd take anyone down to her size if they uttered a complaint about Ariawyn. I spent the remainder of the waiting time moving straw and the freshest hay we had, Gilorndir suggested because we did not know what any of these poor people had been eating it would be best to treat them like they were starved and slowly change their diet.

When they arrived back there was indeed a mutilated Pegasus. From what it looked like however, they didn't have the poor thing for long; there was also seven dehorned unicorns two of which were magical. There was also a extremely rare intelligent horse, and a young (not child) elf. The elf saw the guards quickly unhitch the unicorns from the cart with the severely injured and the unicorns thanking them as if he didn't believe what he was seeing. Gilorndir was busy checking the worst of the wounded, he had sent the Pegasus to lay down; saying he will have to help him last or no one else will be treated.

The intelligent horse was uninjured as he had seen what the bandits were doing and avoided speaking or showing any intelligence. The magical unicorns were very dispondant, Cassie went to them and started talking softly to them. I hope she can help them realize they are still good people. I watch the elf as he kept a wary eye on everyone, as Alberich came up to me. He lays his head on my shoulder, "I do hope Calliope and her new buy enjoy their time with the Hunt." I chuckle as I pat his shoulder, the elf notices this and looks surprised.

"Pardon human, but you are not going to harm us?" I pat Alberich on the shoulder again while I thought of how to answer him. I tilt my head and nod towards Zander who is helping to unload the injured from the wagon, "does it appear that we are going to?" The elf looks and while he pauses at seeing the centaur he does watch for a few minutes. He then looks back at me, "no; but where have we been brought?"

I spy Ariawyn and wave her over, as she walks over I say. "You are in Hope Point, the city founded by a Dragon Hunter." The elf blanches when he hears that and Ariawyn sees it and comments, "welcome brother. I am sure my father the King would be glad to know that one of ours that was lost is now found." I turn my head towards her, {not now Hunter; he needs to be reassured}. I incline my head in her direction, "this is our representative from the elven court. If you have any concerns I suggest you bring them up to her."

He nods his head slowly his eyes wide as it appears he is thinking a few minutes. He starts to relax and says, "apologies. I have spent the last year in their 'care', the leader and that female who was with him wanted a 'servant'; and since I wasn't human." I nod my head and he continues, "I need to tell you though. They escaped before the Hunt reached their cave, and from what I know of the Hunt unless they were specifically sent after those two. The Hunt won't be looking for them." I nod my head and give Alberich a look, he removes his head from my shoulder.

I walk a little closer to the elf who almost jumps and I hold my hands up as if to say "see nothing here". I take in a deep breath and ask, "so why did you go white when you heard about where you are now?" He tries to relax again, "because that woman painted a picture of this place that made it seem like this was a place where people were used as pawns by this supposed Hunter." At that statement I see Zander's head whip around and Starburst raises his head from where he was laying on a nearby roof.

I wave my hands at both of them and say, "do you have an issue with Hunters? You are in a city that was founded by one." The elf shakes his head, "they're human and pardon me saying this; as you seem nice and all. Humans don't care about anyone but humans," Zander shakes his head and goes back to work, Starburst puffs out a cloud of smoke and lowers his head again watching. I tilt my head thinking, "what about Mordred?" The elf waves a hand, "he was God touched. If he wasn't he would have been just like his father."

I touch a finger to my chin feigning that I was thinking, "you might be right. Ever hear of a female Hunter behaving that way?" The elf went to wave his hand again and pauses, he then looks carefully at me and notices the ring on my right hand that matches the ring around Alberich's foreleg. He blinks then blanches and instantly hits the ground apologizing. I give Ariawyn a look and she gently pulls the elf upright again and I shake my head saying. "Look, I found no fault in you voicing your opinion. You don't know any better, so you speak from a position based on what you believe is true." I point at Starburst, "didn't you notice him sitting there?" The elf looks where I pointed and blanches again and looks back at me shaking his head. I continue, "Like the centaur, the unicorn, and the magic gryphon he is my guardian. Know that a Hunter is seldom without a guardian nearby, why do you think I set this city up?" I lean against Alberich as I wait on an answer.

The elf shrugs his shoulders, I cross my arms and explain. "I wanted a place where everyone was welcome as long as they follow common sense rules. I don't make them, I can propose laws; but the council here has to make the choices. Also the Hunters only get a single vote on the council while other species could potentially have multiple. However unlike how human governments have been in the past you can't sit on the government for your whole adult life." I smile as I continue, "I wanted people who knew their people to represent the people. It sounds odd, but if you do not get involved in the community how would you know what it needs?"

The elf nods in agreement almost smiling, and he excuses himself and goes to help out with the injured. Ariawyn turns to me then, "yes Hunter Gwen I am the King's daughter. You weren't really meant to know, because my father thinks you would make a big deal about it." I shake my head and she continues, "I know you would not. So this gave me the best excuse to reveal it to you, just don't spread it around please." I nod my head and I spy Flower approaching us dressed, well dressed like one of Moonbeam's people. Ariawyn shakes her head slightly, "oh about that Hunter. I won't be attending that ceremony either and I have warned my people if anyone gets in trouble they not only have to answer to the city by to my father." I nod my head as she goes back to assisting where needed, and Flower stops in front of me.

It is odd to have a teenager that you can look eye to eye with sometimes, but she had more growing to do still. She takes a deep breath and speaks, "Greetings Hunter. Moonbeam wishes to announce that the ceremony shall begin at sundown provided the injured are treated. He is sad you will not be attending but understands that you have a job to important to pass on just to send off our people to the hereafter." She takes another deep breath, "sorry. I needed to be official with that, I had to explain that it was best you didn't attend in case something happened that the guard could not handle." I smile imagining how that conversation went, and knowing I was glad it wasn't me who had it.

She shakes her head, "he was very happy about the gift of that bottle. Talking about how his great granda had tried some of it, he said he is going to add it to the barrel of mead that Hekkogar provided. Considering we are mortal he said it is the proper way to use it." I shake my head, glad I wasn't going to be attending. How bad were the drinks going to be?
