#38 of Dragon Hunter Saga

What would you do if an Old God appeared before you and said you had work to do?

Unknown Perspective:

Him and his wolf pause as they reach the edge of the town and listen with a inner sense. The wolf looks to him, {who would release the Hunt?} He shakes his head not knowing who would be stupid enough to wish them upon the world. He did get a sense that it came from across the Land Bridge, which made him wonder if it had come from the female Hunter's city.

The council chamber:

Starburst inclines his head and speaks, "pardon Ma'am, I honestly don't know how to address a human God form. I have already asked Hunter Gwen to locate the Matriarch and kill her." Morrigan smile and laughs patting Starburst's snout. "Oh I like this Dragon of yours Hunter, he is so polite;" she briefly levers him a gaze. "Unlike other's of his species, my name is my title my dear Dragon." Morrigan goes to turn to me when Father Peter speaks up and I restrain my urge to throttle him.

"Morrigan? The name of the warrior Goddess of the primitive Celts?" Upon hearing that she smiles dangerously and turns to him instead. I see a few of the non human races blanch at the look on her face. She slowly walks towards Father Peter, "for historical reference. Yes, to your civilization as it is now and what it was before the previous one ended yes. However Priest of the Solar God, there is more to it."

Morrigan looks about the room and frowns at the Druid, "oh get up already. While it is nice to be respected I would like to see who I am talking too." Red Faced the Druid stands muttering, "apologies My Lady." She waves her hand and focuses on Father Peter but obviously speaks to everyone.

"The reason the Old Gods left humanity is a simple one, the Solar God appealed to our vanity. He suggested the one true test of faith would be to leave humanity and let his religion grow and those who stayed true to us were the true believers." She gave the other species in the room a sad look, "it had consequences we did not like. First it made a target of the other peoples, and those that truly did believe were tortured and killed in the name of the Solar God." She then got a angry look on her face, "then the Dragon's woke from their slumber. We Old Gods want everyone on an equal footing, or as much of one you can have with the species differences."

She crosses her arms and starts pacing while continuing, Atsuko starts taking notes. "The Dragon genome is very prone to mutation, if you add something into the environment that can alter their current power they mutate. Ergo the Solar Dragons, the Old Gods had started the Hunter lines to be the counter balance to that." She levers Ecthelon a gaze now, "they were meant to intermingle with the other species. As the human genome is also prone to mutation," she waves a hand towards Atsuko who was still taking notes. "I am sure your resident scientist has figured that out already," Alberich steps forward his head slightly lowered in deference. "Begging your pardon M'Lady, but after Merlin cursed their lines it weakens them considerably. Is it even known if it has any other effects?"

Morrigan looks thoughtful then grins and snaps her fingers, "well lets ask him shall we?" At that moment an older man appears in the room covered in cobwebs, the moment he sees Morrigan he starts complaining. "Woman if you wanted to summon me, could you have at least avoided dragging me through the old Egyptian library?" I spy Atsuko's head shoot up on hearing that, I ask Cheshire. {Does he mean the library I think he does?} Cheshire responds,{ oh yes. The mages had put it in a pocket dimension just before it burned to the ground. Of course there was a war after that and people forgot it existed aside from a few mages who pop in there to do some random reading}. I shake my head thinking that we needed to find a way to access that library somehow.

That moment is when the old man notices me and frowns then looks to Morrigan, "you know my thoughts on those Hunters woman. Why would you bring me near one?" She smiles as our Druid speaks up, "Lord Merlin! This is the woman who's been killing most of the Dragons since they woke up". Alberich gets an angry look on his face and takes a step forward when Morrigan speaks, "no Guardian. You are not allowed to kick him just yet," she gives Merlin a withering look. "You angered a great many of us when you meddled with the Hunters Merlin." He shrugs his shoulders and makes a recliner appear out of nothing and sits in it, his fingers templed. "I don't care woman, no mortal; even God touched should have that much power. I gave them a weakness, it prevented tyrants from existing." He glances in Ecthelon's direction and points a thumb at him. "Such as elves like that one, someone should have put him down ages ago." I see Starburst place a 'hand' around Ecthelon and him lean over to look the old elf in the eyes, I guess they were speaking.

Morrigan grins, "so Dragons being that all powerful is alright though?" He grins back and says, "that's what your 'Hunters' are for."

"Mages like you?" She says.

"Mage Hunters," he responds.

"Humans?"

"War and illness."

"Manticore?"

"A created species that the magical unicorns themselves are working on, I can do this all day woman." Merlin says leaning back in his chair, she shakes her head. "Did you alter anything else in their genome Merlin? We intended them to interbreed with the other species." He shakes his head, "no; I just altered their ability to fight humans." I could hear a low rumble come from Cheshire and I spied Zander grip his pole arm. Merlin see's Cheshire on my shoulders.

The old mage then looks about the room a moment his eyes stopping on Zander, Cheshire, Alberich, Starburst, and then on Ecthelon for some reason. He tilts his head as if hearing something, and turns to Ecthelon again. "Pardon the comment about ending you old man," he then turns back to Morrigan. "So she's the one is she?" He shakes his head, "you know the females seldom have done the fighting. They tended to be more of the 'learned' people," Morrigan nods her head slowly.

Merlin breathes in a sigh and looks to me without contempt this time, "well Hunter. There is one way for my 'curse' to be lifted, the God Touched Hunters have never had the issue of fighting humans as your friend can attest to. Mordred was God Touched, though I am very unhappy with how that ended." He then levers my Guardians a dark gaze, "know this. No God Touched Hunter has ever had children. They have never lived long enough to have them, they have a habit of getting killed in spectacular ways. Also, I expect if she becomes God Touched that you all guide her then. She will need to ensure she does not abuse her powers."

Starburst has let go of Ecthelon at this point, and he speaks. "She has the evil sense Merlin, and the feel of evil disgusts her." Merlin blinks upon hearing that obviously surprised, "odd. We have never seen that ability in a female before, maybe it makes a difference if a female has it." Ecthelon spits, "I doubt it. As Mordred just wanted to unite the people, and Arthur wanted to divide them; and Mordred was the one with the evil sense Merlin."

Merlin sighs again and turns to Ecthelon, "I made a very bad call back then. Mordred should have been the victor, not Arthur's people. I did my best to rectify it, though it caused me to sleep as well." I see Starburst let out a puff of smoke, and Merlin pales. "Um your pet Dragon isn't going to eat me is he?" Merlin looks to me with worry on his face as he slowly stands up, Morrigan grins and waves her hand and a field forms around Merlin. He swears and says, "damnit woman I need to be able to disappear if that scaly gets angry with me." She chuckles at his frustration and then gets a serious look on her face.

"Merlin, you do know that while these Guardians do not like you they were all fairly certain you were the cause of the Dragon's slumber." Merlin slowly sits back down shaking his head, "well no I didn't." He waves a hand at Starburst, "his kind are notorious for not being very cerebral." He then waves at Alberich and Cheshire, "that one's type likes to avoid magic and the other is too wrapped up in his own species issues to really look into it."

Zander raises a hand before the mage could continue, "old man stop. None of us here are that dense, the Dragons slept then you vanish from history. Once the Dragons woke the Druids started speaking of how their head was around again. Very simple to follow really." Morrigan nods her head in agreement and she makes the field vanish. Merlin stands again and makes his chair vanish, "well woman if you don't need something else I'd rather leave." She nods her head in agreement, and he vanishes immediately.

Morrigan walks about the chamber as if thinking, "where was I; Oh yes! The human genome is prone to mutation, therefore it was best to put the trait into the human lines. Then let them partner up with the other species, to make it spread about. She pauses in front of Father Peter, "but then your God had the humans believing that anything not human was evil. So we tinkered a little more with the Hunter lines making their bloodline ability skip sometimes multiple generations." She waves a hand in my direction, "Gwen's family was the one exception. Oddly she is descended from the line of Lancelot, who after Arthur's death went back to roving the country side and whoring about. One of the bar maids he had a child with was the daughter of an old soldier."

Morrigan looks at me with pride in her eyes and steps towards me, "he knew what her child would be. So he made a point to ask the Gods for the strength to train the child right. For his devotion we ensured his line would always trigger at least one Hunter per generation. He made sure to tell the child as it grew what the child's purpose was and that most would not understand." She reaches to me and hugs me still speaking, "your uncle who is a good man should have seen that you were also a Hunter. The problem is that until you, no women in your line have ever had the ability."

She lets me go and turns to Ecthelon, "she will need you when she faces the Matriarch. Yes, she will have her Guardian's; but she will need you as well. Her end will come with a price." She turns back to me with sadness in her eyes, "You will all be rewarded when you complete this task though; not all of you may like the reward. I will give you till spring before I expect you to start searching, that should give you time;" she looks to Ecthelon again when she says that.

Father Peter speaks up then, "if you are here as a sign of good faith Ma'am. I wonder why you would have any concern about the Dragon issue." Morrigan smiles as she slowly vanishes from sight, "that is a simple thing Priest of the Solar God. We prefer to have worshipers versus winning a contest, can your God say the same?" Father Peter looks downtrodden after she leaves, and the Druid claps him on the back. " 'ere now if ye cannae git your God to appear before us that would be something" I nod in agreement knowing that Peter's issues of faith need to be resolved on his own.

Cheshire points with a wing and says, "look she left something behind." Where Morrigan had been standing was a very old bottle with a note.

[To Moonbeam,

This is a gift from Dionysus, he is sorry you lost so many of your people. So he has gifted you with this for your funeral services, please inform the Hunter that she may wish to keep the children from the services.]

After I read the note Gilorndir takes the bottle carefully from my hands and gently opens it and takes a sniff. He then quickly closes it and shoves it into my hands and starts staggering about. Ecthelon watches his friend a moment then looks at the bottle, "Hunter. I believe it would be best if we made a decree that any children not of the minotaur people not attend this funeral. I will also be avoiding it and I suggest you do as well," he nods his head at the healer. "He's drunk from a smell of it, I estimate that bottle is from the God's private stocks." I nod my head and I raise an eyebrow to the Druid who quickly comes over and gingerly takes it from me. "I shall take this to him and Hunter. I doubt anyone would complain about such a ruling based on what happened to our Healer." I nod my head again as the Druid leaves and I hear Leaf's tired voice echo in the chamber.

{Hunter Gwen, what ever that group was on the horses with the hounds were, they left with considerably more hounds. I suggest you send someone here to gather the wounded ones, I do not think they will follow me as I cannot protect them}. I get an impression of the location and I see Alberich and Sir Iron nod their heads, "we will gather a group together." Sir Iron looks at Gilorndir, "can someone fix him before we get back? We might need his help."
