#3 of Stories from the Modern World of Huiop

Kurt moved his car just out of the way as the SUV drifted into the lane. He didn't want to get into another accident. The tense up and movement made the cuts on his lower torso and leg flare up bad. He winced and growled but kept it together on the road. He turned on the radio. He was starting to drift off to sleep.

"We got a hundred degrees tomorrow and a hundred and ten for the middle days of the week. In further news..."

He tuned out the radio. He wanted to get way from Chuxsas. He'd grown up in it. It'd not been the best place to grow up in as a fox. Not many foxes in such a big city, they were the minority. Not everyone was specist but it was there and underlying. He'd kept himself from getting bent out of shape while having to endure his parents in the hospital.

After the Accident

"But that dog, she's just a cute little bitch. Got a couple of cute bitches for daughters too," he could remember his mom was saying at one point.

Nope, she was far gone from being a fox. Thinking she was a dog or a wolf. His dad wasn't as bad but kept up with the jokes.

"Then they said what paint had I dipped my tail in today at the yard. That son of a bitch rhino, I said 'probably some of that lard oozing off yer ass," and his dad laughed after he said that.

No, Kurt wanted to be away from that. They asked him about his girlfriend too. They finally got over the fact he was dating a badger but now wanted the badger fox babies.

"You putting a ring on it or what," his mom asked.

"We'd talked about it," he sent back.

His dad started to chime in after his mother but he beat him saying, "We got to talk about it more."

"You're dad and I were married at 23. Gotta' get a move on," his mother added. "She moving in with you?"

"He could move in with her, you know," his dad said.

"He has a house, she has a loft." And they'd argued like the typical old married couple the whole time. No ear plugs. He twitched his ears and turned off the exit to the town Culcheth, south of Claby, where he worked. Finally the three day drive was going to be done. He pulled up into his rental house and hefted the luggage up to the front porch his wounds crying out protesting his movements. He almost collapsed into the recliner, taking the time to move the luggage just inside and closing the door. Never mind the pervasive musty smell of two weeks of not being lived in of the rental property. He went into a nap after reclining.

His phone ringing woke him back up and he took his cell phone out of his jeans pocket and saw it was Jayden, his good python-lizard friends from there, "I was going to call the cops. You alright?

"Yeah, sorry. I was taking a nap," he yawned.

"Fox, can't understand how you can sleep after sitting and driving so long. I can't sit still after I drive that long," the hiss laden voice came back to him.

"That's why you're still working in the factory," He groggily mumbled back rubbing his eye.

"Damn right," he spoke then silence before he said, "Alright, I'll let you get back to sleep. Oh."

The last part was before Kurt was about to hang up he put the phone back to his ear the phone feeling heavier from his driving fatigue, "You meeting me for lunch tomorrow, right. Can catch up."

"Sure," he said.

"Ok, see you at Bendz I got a discount there."

"Bye," The fox hung the phone up.

Bendz. That was good. Snake-lizard owned seafood. He liked the diversity. He tried to nap but after texting his girlfriend Skyla that he was home. He heard a knock on the door not soon after. She launched herself at him hugging and nearly knocking him over. His wounds aflame. He accepted the embrace grinning at seeing the beaver. She laughed in a wheezing whistling sound through her buck teeth that he loved to hear so much.

"I missed the shit out of you," she spoke.

She moved a paw to his belly and brushed the wound and he jumped, "Oh I'm sorry. Want some TLC?"

She nuzzled him and licked his muzzle. He held her and looked into her eyes.

"Why didn't you let me come visit in the hospital," she groaned lightly touching his torso on the tender area.

"Aren't you do for that promotion," his ears perked up.

"Screw that promotion," she grumbled into his shoulder.

"You know you want it badly," She said looking over beyond her but smiling.

"I make enough money," she complained but nipped at his neck.

"No, I wasn't wanting to be selfish. C'mon. I'm tired," he groaned feeling her embrace start to get him stirred up down there.

"Oooo you want a sleepover. Please say yes," She begged.

He laughed at her. They retreated to the couch.

"My mom was wondering if you wanted to visit with her while you were there, Her mother owned a furniture shop. All wood furniture. Considering the association, he didn't think he could handle it you know about that.

He said, "God, she's from the old time back when."

The beaver ignored it, "She'd love to visit with you, you'd think she'd had another son."

"I just wasn't too interested in woodworking," he added trailing off.

"Ahhh," they both let out a relief of a sigh while cuddled on the sofa.

Her mother had visited him in the hospital, the recliner and couch had wooden lower parts that came from her shop. Still, Sky's mother was just as tough to endure as his own parents while he was there. They watched a how do they make it show on the streaming service but as he started to nod off, the beaver changed it to a romantic comedy about a family of rats that had to deal with their own stereotypes while trying to make it.

He was late the next day to work. Getting into his lab coat was tougher than he thought. He couldn't hide his wincing at the pain whenever he moved too quickly. He was at his station getting results tallied up when his boss heather, a red and blotched yellow beagle came over to his station.

"Ahh, Kurt how~" then she stopped as he moved too quickly and jerked at the pain.

"You ok? What happened."

"Oh. He looked down at his torso and leg, although it was smarting him the whole time he'd tuned the pain out, "Hit and run."

"Why didn't you call in, you could've taken off longer," she outstretched her paws.

"It's okay," he smiled as best he could despite not feeling very pleasant about it.

He suffered until lunch both with the pain and thinking about being in that hospital any longer than the several days he was. He met the python-lizard friend at the bendz.

They ordered and Jayden spoke, "What are you going to do about the car?"

He stared at the python-lizard and then off to the side, he'd not given it much thought as he was fending off his family and friends and being at the hospital. The car was out of commission for a few weeks, "I'll have my dad keep it until he can drive it back when he visits."

He shuddered inside though at the thought of his parents visiting as they hadn't since his move. Bringing Chuxsas to here it felt like.

"I'll get a piece of junk. Maybe I could have you drive me to work until then," he smiled at the python's grimace.

"Yeah, I'll get right on that," Kurt felt down at what the python said, he'd think after six months he'd be good for that at least.

He returned to work and finished out the day dodging the pain. Then he returned home and fetched his mail out of the mailbox.

He was about to go inside when he got a text from his dad:

Hey are you alright?

He hadn't sent him a text he got back safe. He didn't feel too bad about that and thought about that. He felt completely justified but also felt ashamed because he was being mean.

His neighbor, the badger, was out letting his smaller pet badger run around his yard. He had started to say something to him but the fox tuned it out.

"Hey foxy. Are you okay," the badger raised his voice waving a paw at him.

"Yeah. Just been in pain since the accident," the fox said trailing off looking over at the badger.

"Whoa, accident?" The badger came over and joined him, his pet badger nuzzling him on the legs.

"Yeah, some jackass hit into me," the fox spoke.

"Jackass?" The badger started to bawl out laughing, "Some donkey hit you."

"No, was a stag," he trailed off looking at the badger and looked down away and turned away, "I got to go." He remembered being called fox-ass by some of his friends and enemies. The memory hit him particularly. He didn't know why now, but it bared itself up in his mind. He closed the door behind him after he entered his house and drooped his body and his cell phone in his paw.

Then he send to his dad, I'm fine. It still hurts pretty good.

Maybe have your girlfriend take care of you, he texted back.

Yeah, he sent back at that.
