#20 of Dragon Hunter Saga

As I am set down inside the tent after it is reassembled Atsuko rushes in looking concerned. She sees that Shadow has propped me up against a pile of pillows to keep my torso in one position and is now sitting near me sharpening his knives seemingly not looking at me.

Atsuko squats down and reaches our to examine me when I hear Gilorndir's voice, "do not touch the Hunter or I shall request her bodyguard restrain you woman." Atsuko pauses and looks over to Shadow who is still working on his weapons, and then she turns to the elvan healer. "And who are you to tell me to not examine her? I am a doctor," she says and at the doctor comment he snorts in derision.

"A 'doctor' are ye? Well, I shall have you know I am a healer that has been training longer than your grandmother has been alive woman. I am treating the Hunter and shall always treat the Hunter, I will not have you scrambling up her organs when it is not needed. If I need to put her lower intestine back in place I will let you know." He brushes past Atsuko and gently touches my ribs in different locations.

He looks at me briefly before having me open my mouth and feels along my throat, "good the Dragon didn't jostle you much. I was concerned about that after I sent you back here so I decided to check on you, no matter how devoted that scaly is he is still a Dragon." I could hear a rumble and Starburst responding, "I can hear that fairy boy." Gilorndir lifts his head and laughs, "you were meant to."

Gilorndir then waves at Shadow, "please come and hold here a moment while I check to make sure this rib is still in place please guard." Shadow stands and I hear Atsuko blow up, " I WILL NOT ABIDE A QUACK TREATING SOMEONE IN MY GROUP. I AM A DOCTOR AND YOU WILL STOP TOUCHING THAT WOMAN NOW!" I see Shadow pause and raise an eyebrow at Gilorndir, and right then Alberich and Cassie both stick their heads into the tent.

"Atsuko you are making a scene, Gilorndir is a highly respected healer. I trust him more with Gwen's health than I would you as he doesn't need to make a wound to fix one." Atsuko looks incredulous and starts ranting, "I will not have some junk 'healer' treat someone with an unproven method."

With that statement Alberich steps into the tent and Gilorndir stands looking at me apologetically. He turns to Atsuko and addresses her. "Alright lets think on this logically," he turns to Cassie; "can you arrange some refreshment please child? I may be here a bit talking to this woman," Cassie ducks out of the tent entrance.

Gilorndir sits near me with Shadow sitting on my side that Gilorndir wished to work on sharpening his weapons again. Alberich settles in and Cheshire saunters inside the tent and sits in my lap. Everyone waits while Atsuko just stands there unsure of what to do. I hear Starburst's voice again, "human doctor I suggest you sit and discuss your issues or it is going to be a very awkward long pause in there."

Atsuko looks surprised then looks around to decide where to sit and as she attempts to sit close to me Shadow gives her a look out of one eye and she quickly decides to sit near Alberich. I gently shake my head, {so can we get over the posturing and get through this 'debate' my ribs hurt people}. I can hear Starburst rumble in displeasure outside of the tent, Gilorndir gives me another apologetic look. "As I do not wish for you to be jostled more Hunter I can't until I know your doctor won't need restraining."

Atsuko bristles at the comment, "that sounded like an insult. Explain to me how what ever it is you do will help cure the Hunter of her problems?" Gilorndir waves a hand in Atsuko's direction, "using your 'medicine' how long will her fractured ribs take to heal?" Atsuko looks at Alberich with a question on her face, "how is that relevant?" Alberich answers her question, "if you answer his question yours will be answered Atsuko. Gilorndir believes your method of fixing people has a place, just not in this case."

Atsuko turns back to Gilorndir and responds, "a few months and it requires wrapping her chest tightly keeping her immobile." Gilorndir nods his head, "mine only takes a week of 'bed rest' and not having her move her torso a whole lot. No binding of her chest as it would impede regrowth with my methods." Atsuko looks shocked and I give her some more information. {Recall the group of women Tammy is in that I rescued?} Atsuko nods her head, {the men there had whipped me severely. Badly enough it still pisses Shadow off}. Shadow nods his head, {Gilorndir healed all of the wounds in a couple of hours with little scarring that wasn't already there}.

Atsuko looks shocked again, and Gilorndir wiggles his fingers mockingly; "yes I did it with magic." Then he laughs, and as Atsuko opens her mouth to comment on that Cassie steps in with Harriet. Who was carrying a platter with some food as well as some steaming cups of what I hoped was tea. Gilorndir jumps up to help Harriet, "greetings fair lady let me help you with that. You are Harriet yes? I didn't expect Cassie to bring you when I requested some food and drink." Harriet blushes at the lady comment and I mentally chuckle, I hear Alberich talk to me privately. {When his best friend finds out Gilorndir has a woman he likes he will have way to much fun with it.} I grin, it was good to know the healer had friends.

Gilorndir sets the platter down and sniffs the cups and smiles at Cassie, "good you knew which tea to request for the Hunter; I was not sure if you knew of any healing methods that did not include horn usage." Harriet pats Cassie's shoulder, "she's a good girl this one. I sometimes forget she doesn't have hands when she's giving me suggestions for herbs in food and such."

Gilorndir smiles brightly, "that's good. Dear Harriet when I see you in the new city I shall have a gift for you to enjoy, oh." He turns to look at me, "Hunter I would like to examine the girl that carries Harriet's grandchild please." I slightly nod my head at him, {Cheshire can you ask Dusk to lead Calliope over here please without frightening the girl}. Cheshire jumps off of my lap and stalks out of the tent.

Harriet watches him leave and thinks a moment and her hand comes up to her mouth in shock, "oh! I need to go as I am fully aware he didn't need to leave to tell the boy Cheshire knows I was baking cakes. Pardon me," and she rushes out of the tent. Alberich mentally chuckles as Gilorndir carefully hands me the mug of tea. "No food till tomorrow I am afraid Hunter I am sorry." I nod my head and slowly lift the tea to my lips to sip it, he settles back down near me. Cassie looks at Atsuko, {what the healer stated wasn't total jest Atsuko. He uses herbal mixtures that have been used by the other species for millennia and adds some magic kind of like a 'jumper cable' for a car.}

Atsuko blinks and Gilorndir completes the thought, "it is an addition to speed things along. I come from a line of magic borne elves, most healers do. Just like most magic borne dwarves make all weapons and armor that are used, it is to give crafts an added benefit. If I could not add magic to the herbal mixtures it would still take about half of your healing time." He lifts his hand before she could refute him, "this is because the 'herbs' I use have not been seen by humans since before King Arthur's time."

He glances at me a moment, "that's a topic for a different day Hunter. Trust me, it is an interesting tale of it's own." I slightly nod my head drinking more of the tea, he reaches over and sprinkles something into my cup. "A mild pain killer Hunter, though you will not think it is mild in about an hour when you are asleep." I nod my head and finish the tea and Shadow takes the cup and sniffs it before setting it down.

Atsuko shakes her head, "so you want me to just believe that our years of learning as a species doesn't matter?" Gilorndir shakes his head, "absolutely not. In reality, your techniques might be very helpful later on. We will just have a difference of opinion on how to proceed. Your Hippocratic oath says to do no harm yes?"

She nods her head in agreement and he continues, "so. If I can make her better in a fraction of the time it takes you without making the injury worse, isn't that a better course of action?" She nods her head again slowly, "but it's not science!"

Gilorndir smiles, "no it's magic. While many people study magic to try to simplify it, when dealing with magic the answer is always 'it is magic that's why' is the proper answer. From what I know of you, you were a virologist yes?" She nods her head and he continues again, "alright how would you treat a childhood illness without your science cures?" She shrugs her shoulders and he nods her head, "yet even there you would be invaluable. Why? Simple, you know what these illnesses look like when someone is infected with them."

Atsuko thinks a moment, "alright I see your point. I would like to study your methods if I may though." Gilorndir nods his head, "certainly when we are all established I shall give you some copies of my texts to study. You may find them interesting." She nods her head in response.

Gilorndir then turns to me, at this point the 'painkiller' was starting to take effect and I was starting to feel tired. "Good I was hoping your physiology would make it react faster," he looks at Atsuko. "Some interesting information, Hunters are designed to rid their bodies of toxins quickly so medications of any kind tend to 'burn through' them faster." Atsuko nods her head as if to make a mental note.

Gilorndir walks towards me waving at Shadow, "now lets fix that rib that seems to not be in the right place." Him and Shadow pop the offending rib back into place, and even with the pain killer it hurt. However after I fell asleep as it seems the pain was making it hard for me to actually sleep.
