Dark Energy

This was a commission I did for Shadowfox014, and another one of the very few Pokemon TFs you'll see from me. This one was a bit more experimental, since I put a bit more emphasis on the mental changes than the physical ones and didn't really include much dialogue, but I thought it turned out pretty well. Hopefully you enjoy it!

The sound of happy music filled the air as Travis gleefully tapped away at the buttons on his DS. He was currently in the middle of one of his favorite games on the system, Pokemon Heartgold, and exploring though Blackthorn City, one of the final areas of the game. He smiled as he watched his character jump down the ledges near the entrance to the ice cave, walking around the houses and buildings dotted around the city. It never got old, exploring though this game. Even though he'd played through it numerous times, exploring all the environments, catching the various Pokemon, and becoming the champion... somehow, it never got old to him. He still got excited every time he started up the game, every time he encountered a new Pokémon and entered a new town. No matter how many times he played, it almost never got old to him.

He smiled as he explored the city, memories of previous playthroughs flooding his mind. Even now, he could still recall every detail of the city he was in from memory: every building, every ledge, and every person. Although... something wasn't right. Standing right outside the Pokemon Center was a character that Travis didn't recognize. Not only was had there never been anyone standing there as far as Travis could remember, but the character's sprite looked completely different from any of the other NPCs in the game. The sprite appeared to be wearing a suit and cape with a large top hat, sporting a rather large black beard to go with it. Travis couldn't remember ever seeing anyone in the game that looked like that, and he found himself overwhelmed by curiosity. Frowning, he moved his character to the mysterious sprite and pressed A.

"Hello, young one!" said the character. "May I ask a favor of you? I have been looking for strong trainers to assist me with a project I am working on, and I was hoping you would be willing to help me. However, I am only looking for trainers with a specific type of Pokemon: the dark type! Tell me, young one: do you have any dark type Pokemon with you?" After the text appeared, the Yes/No box popped up, and Travis frowned. What was going on? He couldn't remember anything like this ever happening in the game before. Did he even have any dark types with him? As far as he could recall, the only dark type on his team was his Umbreon... but still, it was something. After a moment of hesitation, he moved the cursor up and selected Yes.

"Excellent!" replied the mysterious character. "However, before we begin, I must see if you are strong enough to help me. Thus, I must insist that we battle! Do you accept?" Once again, the Yes/No box popped up, making Travis feel even more confused. Now there was an entire battle that he couldn't remember? It seemed unlikely that he would miss or forget about something this important, so why was this happening? But now he was really curious... if this was something that he'd never seen before, he really wanted to see it through. Grinning, he once again moved the cursor up to select Yes. "Excellent!" The figure said once again. "Now, let's begin!"

The screen flashed and faded to black as the battle music kicked in. When the battle screen appeared, Travis saw the man's battle sprite show up on the right side of the screen, wearing the same outfit as his overworld sprite and carrying a cane. "You are challenged by Sorcerer Blackwell!" Read the text on the bottom. "Sorcerer Blackwell sent out Houndoom!" As the Dark Pokemon appeared on the right side, Travis watched his own trainer send out his own Pokemon. "Go, Umbreon!" Umbreon? That wasn't the Pokemon at the front of his party. Was it because Umbreon was his only dark type? Curious, he flipped over to the Pokemon tab, and sure enough, Umbreon was the only Pokemon it showed. So the game was only allowing him to use dark types for this, he thought.

Not that he minded, of course. After all, Umbreon was one of his favorite Pokemon of all time, one that he was happy to have on his team. It hadn't been particularly difficult to get, either; the fact that he spend a lot of time with his Eevee combined with the fact that he mostly played at night made it easy to evolve it into an Umbreon, and from there it was just a matter of training and leveling up to make Umbreon one of his strongest Pokemon. The only problem was that his Umbreon wasn't exactly equipped to fight other dark types, since its attacking moves were almost exclusively dark type moves. But he did have another option: a trick that he was hoping would bring him victory.

"Umbreon used Confuse Ray!" read the text on the bottom as the animation flashed across the screen. "The foe's Houndoom became confused!" Travis crossed his fingers as the ducks circled the Houndoom's head. "The foe's Houndoom is confused! It hurt itself in its confusion!"

Travis breathed a sigh of relief. Now to attack! "Umbreon used Pursuit!" Read the text. "It's not very effective..." Yes, using dark type moves didn't seem like the best plan, but it was still the best one Travis had. The only non-dark type attack move Umbreon had was Quick Attack, and Pursuit would still be more powerful than it thanks to its STAB bonus. "The foe's Houndoom is confused!" read the text. "The foe's Houndoom used Fire Fang!"

The animation flashed, and Travis's jaw dropped when he looked at Umbreon's health, which had dropped all the way into the red. "A critical hit!" This was bad. The only healing items Travis had were potions, which wouldn't be enough to allow Umbreon to withstand another one of those attacks. Luckily, Houndoom was still confused, and if that activated a second time, he would still stand a chance... he hoped. "Umbreon used Pursuit!" Travis crossed his fingers, looking at the Houndoom. "The foe's Houndoom is confused!" He held his breath. "It hurt itself in its confusion!"

Travis breathed out a sigh of relief. Houndoom's health was in the red. One more attack would do it. "Umbreon used Pursuit!" With that, Houndoom's health dropped to zero. The battle was over. "The foe's Houndoom fainted! You defeated Sorcerer Blackwell!"

Leaning back in his chair, Travis wiped the sweat off his face. That battle had been a lot more intense than he was used to, but he'd managed to do it! Now to see what happened next. "Excellent! You have surpassed my expectations for you as a trainer!" said Blackwell, his battle sprite seeming to stare directly at Travis. "Now the real fun can begin!" With that, the battle screen faded, and...

That was it. Nothing happened. The DS's screen remained black, not even cutting back to the overworld. Had it just died on him? But then why was the light on the side still on? And... what was that sound? Slowly, a low hum was starting to fill the air, and it seemed to be coming from the DS. It was so quiet that Travis hadn't even noticed it at first, but it was slowly beginning to increase in both volume and intensity. And... was it just him, or was his DS starting to shake? What in the hell was-

Before he could finish the thought, a shockwave suddenly pulsed out from his DS, knocking him backwards. He dropped to the ground, letting go of the DS as it plummeted to the ground. What... what was that? Something was wrong... his brain was starting to feel fuzzy, like he couldn't think straight. Everything around him seemed to be distorting, but his mind was too addled to fully comprehend anything that was happening. He slowly tried to get up, placing his hand in a bare patch of grass... wait, grass? Had there always been grass there? No, of course not, that was silly. There was no way grass could be growing in his room! So why was grass growing there? More importantly, why did it feel like grass should be growing there?

He raised a hand to his head, removing his gray cap to wipe some sweat off his brow. He tried to move his other hand as well... and that's when he realized that something wasn't quite right with it. The fingers seemed significantly less mobile, and... was he missing his thumb? He looked down at it, just in time to see black fur sprouting along the back to it. His thumb was indeed missing, and his fingers had shrunk into his hand, making it look more like a... paw. Quickly, he turned it over, watching as pink pads sprouted from what used to be his palm. So... he had a paw now? That wasn't right... was it? Was he supposed to have a paw? He didn't think he was supposed to, but... something about it just seemed right.

He looked over at his other hand, which was undergoing a similar transformation, fingers shrinking and fur and pads forming until it looked exactly like the other hand. Yes, that was right... he did have paws. He'd always had paws, of course. What had possessed him to think otherwise? He dug them into the ground, stretching himself out and arching his back. He looked behind him, noticing a few more patches of grass sprouting along his rug and what appeared to be a line of trees next to his bedroom door. That was strange... what were trees doing in his bedroom? Or... what was a door doing in his forest? Didn't he live in a forest? No, that didn't make sense; he was a human, of course he lived in a house. Or... was he? Was he even a human? He couldn't seem to remember.

An odd feeling within his shoes caused him to turn his attention towards them. Wait... since when did he wear shoes? What was he saying, of course he wore shoes! He was a human... right? Yet something seemed wrong... it felt like his feet were shrinking, and his shoes and socks were becoming far too big. He slowly lifted one of them, his shoe and sock falling off to reveal.. another paw. One covered in black fur, with only four toes and small pink paw pads. Slightly confused, he lowered his new paw to the ground, lifting up his other foot to allow his other shoe and sock to fall off. Sure enough, his other foot had become a paw as well. Lowering that paw to the ground as well, Travis frowned to himself. Why had he even been wearing shoes, anyway? They didn't even fit his paws! What was wrong with him today?

Looking around, Travis noticed that his floor was now completely covered in grass, and that the walls had been completely replaced by trees. Not that it mattered; after all, he couldn't even remember the walls and floor being there in the first place. He lived in the forest, after all, so why would they be there? Yet his desk and bookshelf remained, yet to be affected by the sudden change in reality. What were they doing in his forest, he wondered? He had vague memories of using them... as a human? No, that was ridiculous. Why would he be a human? He was clearly a Pokemon, just like he'd always been! Right?

Looking back at himself, Travis noticed that he was still wearing his clothes: a blue t-shirt combined with a pair of tan cargo shorts. But that didn't make sense... if he was a Pokemon, why would he be wearing human clothes? Unless he was actually a human... but that was ridiculous, right? As if on cue, a bulge suddenly appeared in the back of his pants, before they were torn apart to reveal a large bushy tail, covered in black fur with a yellow ring around it. There, see? Humans didn't have tails, so that proved that he wasn't human! To further prove his point, his body suddenly began feeling like it was compressing in on itself... like it was shrinking. Sure enough, his clothes began feeling looser and looser, until they were almost bigger than his entire body! His pants fell off his legs, which were already being covered in black fur, and he had to squirm to get out of his t-shirt, maneuvering his much smaller body through the opening at the bottom. Of course, he couldn't remember how or why he had even managed to get into those clothes in the first place; after all, he was much too small to ever be able to fit into anything a human would wear!

As soon as his head was out, he managed to get another good look at his surroundings. Grass and trees were all around him, and there wasn't a single sign of the house that he'd used to inhabit. Not that he remembered any of that, of course; his mind was already too far changed for it. "Ah... home sweet home," he sighed. Then he frowned. That didn't sound right. "Hom... bre... Umbre! Umbreon!" Ah, that was better! For a moment, he could have sworn that he was speaking like a human, instead of the Umbreon that he clearly was! To drive the point home even further, his face began to change as well: black fur spread all over it, while his face shifted and stretched out into a muzzle. His ears began stretching and elongating into what looked like large pointed tubes, covered in black fur with yellow rings around them... just like his tail. His eyes closed for a second and then opened, revealing that they had turned blood red. Finally, his gray cap fell off his head, revealing the yellow ring that had formed on his forehead. With the transformation complete, he looked around, grinning to himself. The forest was truly his now.

He turned around, looking back at where his clothes were- or rather, where they had been. They had completely disappeared, the last remnants of his human life vanishing without a trace. Even Travis couldn't remember them being there... in fact, he couldn't even remember wearing them. Every single memory of being human had completely vanished from his mind, leaving only the memories of the creature that he was now. In return, new memories filled his mind: memories of being adopted by a trainer, evolving from an Eevee into an Umbreon, and then being abandoned to make room for more powerful Pokemon. It had been absolutely heartbreaking for the poor Pokemon... but he knew that he was destined for great things, and he wasn't going to let a little setback like that stop him! All he had to do was get captured by another trainer, and then he would be able to show the world what he was truly capable of! Only then would he be able to-

His internal monologue was interrupted when he suddenly felt something collide with the back of his head. He turned around to see what it was, and his heart immediately skipped a beat. It was a Pokeball! Was his dream about to finally come true? Sure enough, the Pokeball opened, and the Umbreon felt his body dissolve into energy, disappearing into the ball as it clicked shut. As his body reformed inside the capsule, he couldn't help but silently cheer to himself. This was perfect! Finally, he was going to get his chance to prove himself to the world! He sighed with contentment, curling up inside the ball. Soon, his chance to show the world his power would come.

Meanwhile, the man who had just captured the Umbreon placed the Pokeball onto his belt. Another easy target... it was almost disappointing how simple this was becoming. He adjusted his top hat, giving his large black beard a few strokes as well. His quest to create the most powerful Dark-type Pokemon of all time had only begun recently, but it had been surprisingly successful thanks to the dark energy that he had recently discovered. Not only did it have the power to open gateways to other dimensions, but it allowed him to learn that certain people in this dimension had certain counterparts in another dimension... counterparts that saw this dimension as nothing more than a game. And from there, he was able to formulate a plan: discover the strongest dark-types he could through battles, then use his dark energy to warp reality and transport the counterparts to his dimension, as the Pokemon he had just fought. There was no crime, no hassle, no missing person reports to deal with, and he could even alter their memories to make them think they had always been Pokemon!

Grinning, Blackwell took another Pokeball from his belt and threw it into the air, releasing the Houndoom inside. He didn't need that kid anymore... not when he had a new, much more powerful dark type on his side. And this Umbreon would be his loyal partner... that is, until he encountered another more powerful dark type and decided to release him as well. Was this plan more complicated than it needed to be? Probably... but that just made it more fun! And that was all that mattered to him.
