The Ring of Happiness

This was the very first commission I did for internmatt, based on the picture by ScissorsRunner. The picture essentially involved a girl studying a ring that unlocked the key to happiness, which turned out to be a transformation into a sheepdog (shocking, I know.) So I wrote a story based on it, and I thought it went rather well. Hopefully you enjoy it!

Marianne sighed, walking into her college dorm room and closing the door behind her. This was it. The one thing her entire semester had been leading up to... at least, that's what it felt like. She sat down at her desk, pulling out everything she had in her backpack: folders, pencils, paper, and of course, the package she had gotten in her last class. It was a simple square box, only a few inches in length... nothing too spectacular from the outside. But it was what was inside the box that mattered... and it was also what had Marianne so excited about the upcoming weekend.

She opened the box, grinning at what she saw inside: a simple golden ring. She had received the ring in her Ancient Studies class, as part of a project the class was given. The class was overall pretty run-of-the-mill, but this project was a definite exception to that. It was part of the ancient artifacts unit, where the professor would talk about and show the effects of supposedly magic artifacts, items from civilizations that lived thousands of years ago. For the project, he would give each of the students one of these items and ask them to write a report about what it did and how it affected the student. It was easily the most exciting part of the class, and according to some students, it was the only reason the class was even worth taking. And now here Marianne was, ready to experience that part of the class for herself.

She picked up the ring, examining it carefully. It looked pretty ordinary, but Marianne knew that it was really anything but; after all, her teacher wouldn't have given it to her if it was. She opened one of her folders, taking out the sheet of paper her teacher had given her. "The Ring of Happiness..." she read. "This ring is said to bestow upon the wearer a form that grants the key to eternal happiness..." She looked back down at the ring, grinning. So it was going to turn her into something... the question was, what? A form that grants the key to eternal happiness? That could be anything at all! And she was eager to find out just what it was!

Barely able to contain her excitement, she picked up the ring and slipped it onto her finger. She eagerly examined it, waiting for something to happen... but nothing did. At least, not at first. She continued looking at the ring, examining it from every angle... she had to say, it looked pretty good on her. She liked the way it sort of gave off a bit of light, almost like it was glowing. Wait... was it actually glowing? Or was that just a reflection from the sun? She couldn't tell... and that's when she laughed.

There didn't seem to be any particular reason for it. She just felt a strange desire to laugh, one that just seemed to come out of the blue. She couldn't explain it, but she just couldn't seem to keep herself from laughing! Wait... was it because of the ring? As she looked down at it again, she couldn't help but notice her clothes... she was dressed in a dark yellow sweatshirt, as well as a pair of blue jeans and sneakers. Surely she didn't need to be wearing all of that, did she? It all felt so uncomfortable and itchy! Her clothes just didn't feel right on her body anymore... she had to get them off! She took off her sweatshirt and threw it on the ground, before bending down and doing the same to her socks and shoes. She didn't feel comfortable removing anything else, but just taking those things off felt so... liberating. Standing there in nothing more than her jeans and tank top made her feel far more happy... which was, of course, exactly what the ring's intention was.

She continued to examine the ring, another wave of pleasure flooding through her body. She chuckled for a bit, rubbing her feet together... wait. She felt something on her feet... something that wasn't there before. She looked down and immediately gasped at what she saw. She had fur! Thick white fur was sprouting all over her feet, giving them a sort of animal-like appearance. She couldn't help but giggle at the sight; all that fur just looked so out of place on her otherwise human feet! But it wouldn't look out of place for long, as she could already feel her toes tingling, sharp claws growing in place of her toenails. She felt something happening to the bottoms of her feet, too, like something was forming there. She lifted up her foot and looked underneath it, gasping when she saw what was there. Pads were growing underneath her feet, making them look more like paws! She started chuckling even more; it just looked so ridiculous!

By now, the fur was already spreading up her legs, making them feel rather awkward inside her jeans. Her legs were getting itchier and itchier, and her jeans were becoming more and more uncomfortable. Why was she even wearing them, anyway? It wasn't like she needed them or anything. Still grinning, she reached down and took them off, feeling even more liberated than before. She was now completely naked from the waist down, with the tank top being the only article of clothing remaining on her body. She didn't care, though; after all, her fur was there to cover everything up. She didn't even bother standing back up, since sitting down like this was much more comfortable anyway. As she examined her legs, though, she noticed that her ear was feeling strange... not to mention itchy! But instead of using her hand to scratch it, she moved one of her much more flexible legs beside her, lifting it up and using her foot to scratch it instead! It felt strangely large and floppy, not to mention furry! She continued scratching, even knocking her glasses off in the process. She didn't care, though. All she cared about was scratching that itch, her claws digging in to find the perfect spot.

As she continued scratching her ear with her foot, which was looking more and more paw-like with every second, she happened to notice that her hands were also changing. White fur was growing all over them, and her fingernails were growing out into claws, much like her toenails had. She could even feel pads growing underneath them, making her giggle even more. The fur began spreading up her arms and under her shirt, making even that feel uncomfortable and itchy on her body. Did she dare go completely naked? The question was answered almost immediately, as she quickly slipped her arms through the sleeve holes, moving her head through the tank top until it had completely fallen off her body. By now, though, the fur had completely covered her torso, to the point that even her breasts were barely visible underneath it. She no longer needed clothes; her fur was all she needed to keep herself warm. And that was just how she liked it.

She was chuckling more and more now, watching the fur spread all over her body. It was so warm, so fluffy! She suddenly looked up at the full-length mirror hanging her next to her desk, noticing that her face was starting to change. Her tongue was starting to grow larger, hanging out of her mouth as her chuckling began transitioning into heavy panting. Her teeth also began growing sharper as her face pushed out, resembling a short muzzle. She felt the fur spread all over her face as her blonde hair shrank and vanished, only to be replaced by longer, thicker white fur. It felt so strange, yet so interesting! Her panting only increased as she watched the changes in the mirror. They just looked so ridiculous, and she was enjoying every second she spent watching them. Her joy increased to the point that she suddenly found herself rolling onto her back, her fur growing thicker and making her feel more and more comfortable. As she laid there, her eyes fell onto the clothing she had previously discarded, and mentally scoffed at the thought of wearing them. Why would anyone want to wear clothing, when they could have a coat of thick fur to keep them warm instead?

She continued panting happily, lifting her arms and legs into the air. As she did, more changes occurred: her toes started fusing together and thickening, making her much longer feet look even more like paws. Her fingers were also merging, shrinking into her hands and becoming less and less mobile. Even her arms and legs seemed to be shrinking... though her arms could hardly be called such anymore, as they now looked more like a second pair of legs. She rolled back onto her front, getting up onto her four paws; after all, her body was no longer suited to walk on two legs. As she did, one final change occurred: a short, stubby tail emerged from her backside, covered in gray fur. It began wagging frantically, perfectly summing up the mood of its owner.

The change was complete. There stood Marianne... once a human, now a very simple, very happy sheepdog! Oddly enough, the ring seemed to have vanished during the changed, having completely disappeared from what was now one of Marianne's front paws. But it had been telling the truth when it said it would bestow upon her a form that granted the key to eternal happiness. After all, what could be happier than a creature as simple as a sheepdog? No responsibilities, no chores, no tests... not a single care in the entire world! That was true pleasure... that was the happiness the ring spoke of.

Just then, Marianne heard the sound of a key being turned in the door to her room. The door opened and in walked Nicole, Marianne's roommate for the year. "Marianne? Are you in here?" yelled Nicole, brushing her black hair out of her face. "I was told I could find you in he- oh!" She gasped at the sight of the sheepdog in front of her as it stood there, looking up at her expectantly. "How did you get in here? Did Marianne bring you in?"

The sheepdog simply looked at her, as it continued to pant. It didn't know who this human was... in fact, it didn't even know who it previously was. All memories of its human life had been completely erased. All it knew was that the human in front of it was looking at it, and that made it excited! What kinds of things would they do together? Would they go for a walk together? Maybe run around the park together? Or maybe they would just stay inside, and the human would be content to rub her hands across the its thick, fluffy belly? So many exciting possibilities!

"Wait... hold on..." Looking around, Nicole noticed that Marianne's clothes were just lying there, next to the dog. Even her glasses were there... but where was she? "That's super weird... Oh! What's this?" Noticing the papers sprawled all over Marianne's desk, she picked one up and began reading. "This ring is said to bestow upon the wearer a form that grants the key to eternal happiness..." She looked back down at the sheepdog, then up at the paper. "Oh... okay. Wow. I guess I should have figured that out sooner, shouldn't I?" She put the paper down again, looking over at the dog in front of her. "Well... not much we can do but wait for it to wear off, huh? Oh well. Come on, Marianne, let's go outside!" As Nicole opened the door to the dorm room, the sheepdog happily ran outside after her. It couldn't wait to see what Nicole had in store for it!

Hours later, Marianne suddenly opened her eyes. She was inside her room once again, lying on the floor next to her desk. She looked down at herself, seeing that she was once again human... and naked! The only thing on her entire body was the ring she had been wearing... the one that had caused her to change. Slightly embarrassed, she quickly got dressed once again, changing into the clothes lying next to her... the same clothes she had been wearing before she changed.

As she was putting her shirt on, she heard the door to her room open again. "Sorry about just leaving you in here like that," she said. "I figured you would want some privacy for when you changed back."

"Thanks..." said Marianne, putting her glasses on. "Man, that was really weird. It was like my rational mind just... disappeared. All I could focus on was being happy... I don't think I even remembered who I was!

"But you remember now, right?" said Nicole. "And... you remember being a sheepdog?"

"Yeah, I do!" said Marianne. "Well... most of it, anyway." She grinned. "I mostly just remember how happy I felt, though. I mean... I just felt so free! More free than I've ever felt in my whole life! I didn't have anything to worry about, everything was so exciting, so new... I guess that's the key to eternal happiness, huh? At least, according to the ring..."

"Yeah... you may want to take that thing off, by the way," said Nicole. "You don't want it to suddenly start changing you again, do you?"

"Hey, don't be so sure!" laughed Marianne, taking the ring off and placing it on her desk. "But yeah, you're right. I still need to write that report on how it affected me." With that, she walked over to her desk and sat down, picking up her pen. "Let's see... how do I start..."

A few minutes later, she was busily working away on her essay, writing down everything she could remember about her experience. "Let's see... I remember being really excited when Nicole took me outside..." she said to herself. "And I remember all the scents, too... how I could smell things I never would have been able to smell as a human. And... let's see, what else was there..."

She was interrupted by the sound of laughter coming from behind her. She turned around, only to seem Nicole standing behind her, chuckling to herself. She had taken off her socks and shoes, leaving her barefoot, and she was looking at her right hand, admiring... the ring. With a gasp, Marianne looked over at her desk, noticing that the ring was gone. Nicole must have took it when she wasn't looking. "I can see what you were talking about, Marianne!" laughed Nicole, white fur already sprouting on her feet. "This has got to be the happiest I've felt in a long time!"

"Oh boy..." Marianne sighed. "Well, nothing we can do about it now... I guess it's my turn to take you outside now, isn't it?"
