I wrote this story in response to a writing prompt I-with others-was given in a group chat. I hope you enjoy!

Warning: Wrote this in like half an hour, so I dunno what you guys'll think.

It was a cloudy summer evening. I'd been down on my luck time and time again; one time after another. It was something I wished would end, but the world, I felt, had turned its back on me. It was storming, raining down as if to add insult to injury and I found myself hiding in refuge in a gazebo at a park. It was well lit with candles. It suggests that some sort of wedding had occurred here yet the storm gave them no other option but to cut things short.

As I sat on the floor of it, another man squatted down to my eye level. I looked up to him and his smile.. My own grievances with the world couldn't outshine the smile he'd shown me. It was as if the sun was shining, just for me. "Are you okay?" He asked in the process of removing his coat. "You look a bit down." He wrapped the coat around my shoulders and adjusted it to stay whilst I simply nodded. "Y..Yeah, I just.. Not a lot has been going too well for me.." He huffed, taking a seat next to me. "Well, then, a penny for your thoughts?"

My morning hadn't had the greatest start. I woke up late and ended up missing the bus to the place I would've gotten hired at, had it not been the reason I missed the interview. From then on, calling a cab was like herding chickens. I couldn't hail a single one, and every one I did hail, someone else had run into it. I had to walk my way all the way to the workplace in my suit. By the time I got there, it was drenched in my sweat and-God-the smell. I guess I'd forgotten to wash it after buying it from the local Blue Hanger.

The second I got there, I saw someone else being given the interview I would have been given had I not woken up late. I thought it couldn't get worse, but then it began to rain and soon pour down on me. I had to walk all the way back home, which was at least a mile away. The only saving grace was the bus back home. Or, at least, close enough. It stopped me next to this park, only for another car to drive into a deep puddle, deep enough to drench me in muddy water. On my way to the gazebo, I'd tripped and fallen into a puddle or two, and now I'm here.

"Gosh.. Sounds like you took one hell of a beating from the world." "Yeah.. It wasn't the best day, and with a whole month to go with it." His eyebrows raised at the sound of that. "An entire month of that? Jesus, that must've been a living hell!" He wrapped his arm around me, but proceeded to keep his smile, unfaltered by my own misfortune. I suppose it's only fair, as he seems to be living it better than I. Seeing this, he turned my chin to face him. "Hey.. I don't mean to make fun, it's just a bit surprising is all. I'm sorry you have to go through that."

I almost broke into tears. I'd never wanted something and hadn't known it until he said it. An apology. From someone anyone to help me feel even a bit of solace in the hell I've endured. As if he read my mind, he took my head and pulled it into his chest, allowing me the leisure to let my woes flow from my eyes like the rain itself; pouring down with seemingly no end. From where my eyes were, I could see he was dressed for a wedding, possibly the one that had to disperse before they'd finished packing everything up.

"I don't.. Mean to interrupt, but.. Could I ask you something?" His tone was.. Different somehow. As if more somber than his previous expression let on, sounding bereft of the cordiality he'd shown me when he saw me. I looked up to him with drying trails of tears on my cheeks. "S..Sure."

"Would you.. Well, you'll probably say no.." "Please, ask me." "Would you mind sharing a dance with me? I know it's sudden, but.. I don't know what else to do to help cheer you up. It's.. Kind of my last option at the moment."

At the question, I almost felt the urge to giggle-laugh, even. It was so odd and sudden, I suppose I felt obligated to agree to his assistance in mending my hurting. "I don't see why not."

From there, he stood and helped me up. I was almost relieved that his smile had returned when we stood face-to-face. He took my hand and I took his, my arm over his shoulder and his hand upon my waist. Despite there being no music at all, he lead me into a rhythm of his own, even humming whilst we began.

We'd slow danced for a while, and with the rain drops slamming upon the roof of the gazebo, playing a beautifully rhythmic drum, aiding in our slow dance. I'd held my head against his chest and listened to the soft beat of his heart. It was all but soothing as he then took his hand from my waist and sped his tempo for just a few moments; enough to add a twirl to our slowly blooming rose. We'd hardly even met. I hadn't even gotten his name and, yet, through his motions, I could feel I'd known him for much longer, his name being the only missing piece to the puzzle laid before me.

As he drew me back into his arms, my back against his chest, he was looking at me eye-to-eye. Despite the cliche of fairy tales, I felt it was love at first sight. Our eyes locked for what felt like eternity, our quickly beating hearts felt through each other's hands. He knew as well as I the next step to this dance. "I know I forgot to tell you, but my name is Adam.. Yours?" "Geoffrey."

The moment couldn't have come sooner than after I said my name and our lips met. Our eyes closed as we held it for as long as it was for our eyes to lock. The heat of his breath against mind, his arms wrapped tight around me.. It was then, the thought crossed both our minds, He's the one.
