#1 of Writing Group Challenge

I joined a writing group on telegram that has weekly writing prompts. This week the prompt is "Write a story between two characters that do not speak the same language, and cannot verbally communicate." There was a caveat added that phones can't be used to translate. The group can be found at https://t.me/joinchat/CPoeZhclggenrOEh0yYwvg . I had a lot of fun with this one, since the minimum word count is 1,000 and I nearly tripled it, making this one 2,900.

We need you in tonight. Double pay. Extra VIP arrives at 6. Dress Sharp

With a heavy sigh, the stallion put his phone in his pocket before stepping out of his car. The lithe black and white Clydesdale stretched some, before straightening his jacket. Looking at the imposing building he was parked in front of, most of the windows dark, but a few were bright a few stories up, stepping up to the door, he read the fine script Bechman Marketing , as the door quickly opened.

"It's about time you got here," a gruff bear said. His demeanor betrayed the refined look his suit gave him. "Almost late, Dakota.'

"Lucky I got here on time," the stallion said, brushing past the bear as he went into the building. "Send me a message, forty-five minutes before I have to get here. When you know it takes half an hour to get here." He made his way through the lobby, past the front desk, going to the elevator. Holding the door for the bear to catch up.

"Still had fifteen minutes extra." The bear said as he got into the elevator. Pressing the button for the tenth floor.

"Had to get ready," Dakota shot back. "Extra VIP? Who is it?" He asked, looking himself over in the mirrored walls of the elevator, making sure his dark blue suit wasn't ruffled, tie straight, mane prim, blue streak prominent across his brow.

"Yannick Mair," the bear said coldly, which made Dakota perk some.

"As in the Mair account?"

"His son."

"But why am I here? I have nothing to do with that account."

"Because," The bear said, as the elevator buzzed, signaling their arrival to their destination. "You're the only one that works here that is anywhere close to the kids age."

"How old..."

"Twenty-two," the bear interrupted. "He got here a couple days earlier than his father. He's dropping some information off for the campaign. I need you to make sure the kid enjoys his time in the city." He led Dakota through the rows of cubicles, heading towards the office, light coming through the doors, a few voices could be heard inside.

"Never told me that chauffeuring was part of the j..." Dakota was cut off but a heavy paw landing on his shoulder, stopping him before he went to the office.

"Last minute thing, as I said double pay," the bear turned Dakota around. "Do a good enough job, I'll make sure there's a bonus for you as well, kid." He gave the stallion a friendly smile. "I'll go get him, be right back."

"Alright," Dakota said as he was left to stand in the dark office, the only light coming from the open office door, and the occasional computer monitor still on. Shifting nervously, the stallion waited, he never knew how he got a job in marketing, he's terrible at meeting new people. Before he had a chance to think too much on that, the bear came back out, followed by an imposing figure. Dakota stood easily at six feet, the elk behind the bear was easily a foot taller, not including the antlers, a large suitcase in the elk's hand.

"Dakota, this is Yannick," the bear said, gesturing towards the elk, before doing similar towards Dakota, not in a language Dakota understood. Dakota blinked softly, returning the wave that the elk gave, watching as the elk spoke in the same language. The cervine chuckled softly, walking towards the elevator.

"I've no idea what you or him just said," Dakota said in a hushed tone.

"He's staying at the Regence," The bear said, turning to go back to his office. "Good luck."

"Thanks," Dakota trailed off, before turning around, smiling at the elk who was waiting in the elevator. He quickly made his way in, before tapping the button for the ground floor. As soon as the doors were closed, the elk started speaking. The concerned look that Dakota had as he looked up at the elk made him stop. The elk had a sudden, angry look, and spoke much faster, gesturing between them. "If you just realized that we can't understand each other, yes. I believe that's true."

With a heavy sigh as the elevator doors opened, Dakota reached for the elk's suitcase, earning a concerned look from the elk. Dakota gave the most genuine smile he could muster. "Allow me," he said, beckoning the elk forward. It took the larger male a moment to process, before he nodded and walked out, towards the door. Following close behind, Dakota gently moved passed him to get the door, making sure it'd lock behind them, before they both walked out into the cool evening.

Now much more conscious of how bad his old sedan probably looked to the elk, as he pulled his keys from his pocket. Unlocking the doors, he opened the front door for the elk, before going to put the suitcase in the trunk. By the time he made his way around, the elk was trying to figure how to get himself into the car, maneuvering his antlers. "Sorry," Dakota said, "Didn't know the VIP was so tall." He reached over, pulling the lever on the side of the seat, and pushed back on the seat, getting it to recline all the way back. Moving to sit back in his seat, he gave a weak smile to the elk who snorted and chuckled, before working his way into the car.

The elk blinked and snorted curiously as Dakota handed his phone to him. The stallion scrolling through the app on screen. The elk seeing some familiar music group images, assuming the stallion wanted him to pick something, he took the phone. Not noticing the car start moving as he found the search.

"Good choice," Dakota said once music started playing, a calm score from a recent movie. He took the offered phone and set it in the cupholder, before continuing the trip across town. Aside from the music, the car was filled with an awkward silence. Neither male knowing if speaking would be rude, how to get a message across.

Eventually, they arrived at their destination. A large cylindrical building that looked like it was made mostly of glass. Pulling into a parking space, Dakota grabbed his phone before getting out and going around to help Yannick out of his car. "You go get checked in, I'll get your bag." Dakota said, pointing to Yannick, the hotel, then himself and the car. The elk seemed to grasp what Dakota was trying to say, as he nodded and went inside.

As soon as he walked inside, he realized the mistake of the short plan. At the desk was Yannick, looking very upset, speaking very fast. Across from the elk was a vixen, who had a look of concern mixed with pure confusion. Dakota quickly went up to the desk, giving the vixen a friendly chuckle and a nervous laugh. "I'm sorry, Check in for Yannick Mairs." The elk blinked and quieted, watching.

"Ok," the vixen said, letting out a heavy sigh of relief, before tapping away at her computer. "Yannick Mairs. 1 King suite. I just need to see some identification." She says, giving Dakota an expectant look.

"ID," Dakota whispers, before turning to Yannick. "ID?" When he gets a blank stare from the elk, he thinks, before he quickly pulls out his wallet, getting his license, showing it to the elk. The elk nodded and went over to his suitcase. Opening the front pocket, he pulls out his passport and handed it to the vixen, who went back to typing.

"Payment?" She asks, looking at both Dakota and Yannick. Dakota put his license back, before he took out his credit card, showing it to the elk. Nodding, Yannick took out his own card and handed it to the vixen. After a couple of attempts, she set the card down, "How do we tell him it was declined?" She asked, looking at Dakota. The elk curious about the concerned look the vixen gave him. Blinking, Dakota thought for a moment.

"Have any paper and a pen?" Dakota asked. "Did it tell you why it's declined?" She shook her head as she handed him some paper and a pen. Dakota, set Yannick's card on the paper and then circled it. Looking at the elk, who nodded. Then he pointed to the computer, before drawing a heart with a strike through. Yannick blinked for a moment, processing. He quickly grabbed his card before he pulled his phone out of his pocket and stepped aside. Soon having a very angry conversation. With a heavy sigh, Dakota looked at the vixen. "Sorry."

"Don't be," the vixen said. "Probably giving me my only entertainment of the night."

When the elk fell quiet, sitting in a chair in the lobby, looking quite glum. Listening to his phone, before he speaks a bit. Getting up, he goes over to Dakota and hands him the phone, before going back to the vixen. On the other end, he hears a voice, with a strong accent, speak. "Mr. Mair's card was declined because it is not able to be used out of country. We do apologize for this inconvenience."

"Alright," Dakota said, handing the phone back to Yannick, who was trying to get the vixen to accept cash instead of his card.

Stepping aside, the elk finished his call, before turning to see Dakota, pulling out his own wallet and hand his card to the vixen, who looked just as surprised as the elk. Yannick stood there, shamed look on his face as he watched the stallion pay for his room. Once everything was taken care of, the vixen gave the stallion a room key.

"Come on," Dakota said, nodding with his head towards the elevator, before grabbing Yannick's suitcase and heading there himself. Once both were inside, the stallion got them going to Yannick's floor, handing him the keycard. "614," Dakota said, thinking about how he'd get paid back for this. The elk blinked as they rode the elevator in silence. Once they got out, Dakota led him to his room, before taking his suitcase in and setting it on the floor.

"Have you eaten?" Dakota asked, before frowning, seeing the still shamed, but now slightly confused look of the elk. "Right...pictures...gestures." He pointed at Yannick, before imitating eating. Still getting a confused look, he went to the table that had all the paperwork. He found the area guide and found a picture of food. Pointing to it, before pointing at the elk. Yannick took the paper, before he shakes his head. He flipped through it some, before he set the paper down. Grabbing the pen on the table and one of the memo pads, he scribbled at it, before handing it to Dakota, giving him a sheepish smile. "Pizza huh?" he asks, the image skillfully drawn. "Question Is, what's on it?" He grabbed the pen and tried his best to draw different veggies that could have been on the pizza, earning chuckles from the elk. After nearly ten minutes, he felt confident he had the toppings. Then he drew a glass, of water, before a question mark. Yannick blinked, before looking curiously around the room. Finding the fridge, he opened it and pointed to the array of beverages, earning a nod from Dakota.

Making sure he had the order down; he pulled his phone out. "You're going to love this place, I just hope they deliver here," Dakota said as he made the call. Blinking as there was suddenly a handful of money in his face, Yannick looking at him expectantly. As he placed the order, he took the money from Yannick. Counting it as he placed the order. Getting enough for the food and a tip, he handed over half the money back to the elk, who looked confused. Dakota gave him a soft smile as he set his phone down. Grabbing their picture filled pieces of paper, he flipped one over and drew a clock, the time at 8. He sighed softly. "Should probably wait to make sure the food gets here, and so you don't have to worry about dealing with them."

As he saw the time, and the stallion sigh and speak, Yannick sat on the edge of the bed, looking at Dakota. Pulling his suitcase over, he dug through and pulled out a small sketchbook. Scribbling in it, while Dakota watched him curiously, he eventually turned it around, showing it to Dakota. It was the logos of his father's business. He pointed at them, then to Dakota, waiting on a response. Once he realized what was being asked, Dakota chuckled and shook his head.

"No," Dakota snorted softly as he chuckled. He grabbed a fresh memo and drew on it, not noticing the elk flipping to another page, and drawing some more. As he looked back at his work, he realized the severe difference between his sketches, and the elk's much more refined drawings. Chuckling at that, he showed the elk his picture. Which had a poor rendition of the bear, a copy machine, a cup of coffee, and a pyramid with different levels. He points to the bear, before pointing to the top of the pyramid. Before then pointing to himself, then the copy machine, the cup of coffee. Then he pointed to himself again and brought his finger down to the bottom of the pyramid, then just under it.

Yannick took the paper, looking at it closer, trying to see what everything was supposed to be. He pointed to the image of the bear before bulging out his belly some, hunching over, and giving a growl like noise. Before saying, in that thick accent. "Bechman?" Dakota nodded.

"Yea, I guess names are universal." He thought to himself as he said, "Yes, Mr. Bechman."

The elk nodded, before he pointed to the cup on the page, before the coffeepot in the room, earning a nod from Dakota, before he pointed to the copy machine, tilting his head slightly, brow furrowing. Not getting that one, he hands it back to Dakota. He flipped back to the page he'd drawn on, before he scribbles some, chuckling slightly, before turning it to show Dakota, who immediately chuckled and nodded. He looked at a hastily sketched horse, trying to balance a comically large pile of papers, and a bunch of cups of coffee.

"Ok, so you understand," Dakota said, still chuckling, before he points to the picture of him, then to himself. Before then pointing to the images of the logos, then to Yannick.

The elk blinked, thinking for a moment, before he scribbled again. Turning the book to show he added a graduation cap and a rolled-up piece of paper. He pointed to them, before he then went back to drawing, this time taking much longer. When he turned it back, there was an image of an older elk, and a pyramid drawn around one of the logos on the page. He pointed to the elk, then to the top of the pyramid. He then pointed to himself, then just under the top of the pyramid, earning a nod from Dakota.

"Are you happy?" Dakota asked, before he grabbed his paper and drew a smile and a frown, before pointing to Yannick, then to them. The elk shrugged and then drew a face with a flat mouth. Then he pointed to Dakota, then the two faces he drew. Thinking for a minute, before Dakota pointed to the face that Yannick had drawn, earning a nod from the elk.

"Now, how to figure out tomorrow," Dakota said softly to himself. Thinking for a moment, while Yannick went back to drawing. He flipped his page over and drew as best he could, before turning it over. He smiled softly and showed it to Yannick. Showing a picture of pizza, then a bed, then a question mark, wondering if the message got across. The elk looked for a moment, thinking before he shrugged. Dakota tapped on his chin, grabbing a few pieces of paper. He drew different images on each, thinking of what they could do the next day. As he drew, there was a knock at the door. Dakota quickly stood up, setting the images down before he grabs the money and goes to the door.

Yannick looked at the pieces of paper, smiling softly at the extra amount of effort that Dakota had put into some of the drawings. There was a picture of music notes and a few string instruments, a soccer ball, a video game controller, and a picture of a couple trees and a bench.

"Dinner's served," Dakota said, setting the pizza box down on the table. He looks at the elk, who smiles at the stallion. The elk smiles and hands him a couple of the pieces of paper, the one with the music and the one with the trees. "Music and a day at the park, sounds like fun." He looks at the elk, before he grabs another piece of paper. He draws a clock with a time, before writing down his phone number. Handing it to the elk, who looks at it and nods, before giving a confused look, gesturing to the pizza box, then to Dakota. Dakota smiles softly, shaking his head. He grabs another piece of paper, drawing a different time, showing Yannick, before he points to himself, and rubbed his stomach.

"Thank you," Dakota says softly, before he set that piece of paper aside. He points to the paper with the time in Yannick's hand. "See you tomorrow." he says, waving before heading out. Actually looking forward to the next day.
