A new story that I've been writing lately. It's only the prologue now but I'll upload more chapters as soon as I'm done writing and editing them!

Prologue (Age 12)

Bad things could be said about Newark, New Jersey. Crimes were common, spontaneous gunshots echoing throughout. A young border collie sojourned through his childhood with calm while keeping himself aware of the environment. Things never looked positive for the young canine, who lived in a society where it was a "dog eat dog" atmosphere. The border collie commuted to and from his junior high school by foot since the school was nearby to his house, and the fact he didn't want to trouble his parents of picking him up from school. His father, Scott, always dropped him off near the front entrance.

He and the older collie rode together in his father's police car. His father wore Newark's Police Department uniform. Flashy blue and black colors popped out against his black and white fur, classifying him as a man with authority. The younger border collie had hair that parted both ways and was highlighted with dark blue since that was the color he resonated with. His light green eyes observed the city as his father spoke to him while driving. "How's school, Derrick?"

"School's fine. I haven't made any friends yet."

His father was about to interject but the intercom on his police box patched through. "Officer Bates, we got a situation in the southern part of Newark. Please respond if you accept."

His father responded through the dispatch. "This is Scott Bates and I'll check it out soon."

Derrick didn't mind the patch calls made from the station to his father's vehicle. Scott resumed his conversation with his son as he approached school zones along the way. "Friends are important to have. That's how we get through life. Hopefully, someday, you'll find someone who will truly be your friend."

The younger border collie nodded, combing his blue highlighted hair as the car stopped in front of the middle school. Scott parked his car and spoke to him with the engine running. "Derrick, please be a good kid today. I know you always have been but Newark is a dangerous city. Just want to make sure you're okay."

Derrick got out of the car and retrieved his backpack from the back seat. He glanced at his father while his paw was holding onto the passenger door. "I'll b' fine. If anything happens, I'll be sure t' tell you first thing."

Scott nodded while his son closed the passenger door. The chattering of students surrounded him with buses dropping off passengers and young furs chatting with others before they enter the building. Derrick waved to his father before he holstered his backpack over both his shoulders. He wore a black T-shirt with blue shorts to go along with his attire. He entered the building, being shouldered about as students pushed him out of the way. The young border collie sighed, regaining his footing and adjusted his carry-on, before walking into the building.

The border collie entered the hallways where students opened and closed lockers throughout the long corridors with numbered classrooms expanding across. He had the top locker between classrooms 203 and 205, top locker. He fiddled with his lock, then entered his combination before the locker opened, then quickly was closed by a lion whose appearance was that of an athletic, proud player of the football team. His mane was slowly kicking in around his neck but still revealed most of the fur there. He was joined by a hyena and a wolverine standing behind him. The lion snickered while gazing at the border collie.

"Well, look 't here. The twerp who ain't got shit to stand up for himself," the lion spoke as he turned Derrick around and focused on the collie.

The hyena glanced at him, pointing at his hair. He wore a tank top with a denim jacket and black pants. His spotted body wasn't too impressive but he wasn't unfit either. "Ya, bruh. This guy ain't got the balls t' fight back."

Derrick bared his teeth as he dropped his bag on the floor, which some onlookers started to glance at the trio of bullies and Derrick. The wolverine, who had a belly protruding out made a remark regarding Derrick's mannerisms. "Oh shit, the dog gonna bite. Better watch it Dawson, or else, he'll bark at you."

Dawson snickered and shoved Derrick against the locker, which the slam echoed throughout the hallway and garnered a lot more attention towards them. The lion spoke as he studied the collie, who kept his behavior calm as he went through this harsh treatment. "No need t' worry Craig. He ain't got shit on me. Surprised that his tail ain't drooping between his legs."

The collie grabbed the lion's jersey with his fist clenched tightly, about to punch Dawson if pushed far enough. "Don't fuck wit' me, Dawson. I ain't got the time or desire t' deal with you. I just want t' get through this day wit' out any problems."

The lion snarled towards the collie and landed a hook shot across his face causing the student body to gasp and some of them immediately minded their own business. Derrick felt the impact against his cheek before his face implanted on the ground. Dawson's friends held him back while the lion couldn't control his temper, baring his teeth towards the dog.

"Fuck, bro." The hyena said as he held the stronger body with his arms. Even though his arm size wasn't big, he still had a lot of strength in him. "You tryin' to get expelled? Pull your shit t'gether."

"Fuck, Tyler. This dog pisses me off s'much. I really want to beat the hell out of him."

Derrick got up and rubbed his cheek with his forearm. "Quite a punch from such a pussy like you."

With that, Dawson couldn't contain his anger any longer and lunged himself towards the collie and ended up hurting the canine. Derrick did the best he could to defend himself from the feline's onslaught of punches. The other students shrieked and went ahead to grab the school authorities. The collie snarled, clenching his fist to throw another punch just before a hybrid of sorts with a canine head and a cat-like tail appeared before the collie, spreading out his arms.

"Yo, cool 't. You don't want t' be in bigger problems than they already are."

Derrick snarled towards him, wanting to throw punches at Dawson. "Let me at 'em! I wanna kick his pussy so hard that he cries to mommy about it."

The hybrid spoke up, calming the easily roused collie. "I know you want t' throw punches at him for throwing insults a' you. But just letting ya know that things will be far better not lashing out your anger towards him now."

The collie took in the hybrid's words, slowly unclenching his fist and the hybrid slowly loosened himself. The school officials noticed the disturbance and told everybody to resume their usual duties. The adults talked to Dawson and his posse and to Derrick and the mysterious hybrid who decided to help him out. The principal was a female cougar wearing a red blazer with a red dress and a pearl necklace around her neck. She came up to the canines and spoke to them. "I'll deal with those three right now. You need to come by my office during lunch. I would like to discuss with you what happened."

Derrick and the hybrid nodded before she spoke to the lion and his two lackeys. Derrick sighed and smiled gently towards the hybrid. "Thank ya, bruh for saving m' ass out there."

"No sweat. I can't stand the sight of anyone being bullied like that." His eyes glanced at him and extended his paw towards him. "Tyrese Davis. You?"

Derrick extended his arm slowly in return and shook his paw. "Derrick Bates."

"Nice t' meet ya, man." He smiled and shook firmly. "Ya need help wit' anything?"

"It's cool. I got 't." Derrick smiled as Tyrese straightened him out and fixed up the collie's backpack and all, before handing it to him.

"Well, b' careful today, ya? You don't want things to go like they did earlier today."

"I will, thanks," Derrick said before Tyrese waved his goodbye towards him and went on his way. The border collie couldn't put his finger on it but Tyrese seemed like a genuine companion. The way he approached him didn't give off any unnatural vibes. He was actually being approached by someone who saw him in need of assistance. In any case, his eyes glanced at the clock above the hallway. "Shit, gonna be late." He quickly retrieved one of his books from his locker before heading off to class, hoping he wasn't going to miss out on any material during class.

* * *

After the final bell signaled the end of the school day, Derrick returned to his locker with one strap over his shoulder. As he walked over to his locker, he found dents in it. He noticed they were mainly fist shaped as he cursed underneath his breath. He also found a piece of paper folded and addressed to him as "The Fucking Canine". The collie sighed as he removed the note from his locker and opened it. It read: "You fuckin' piece of shit who got me expelled. You know it should've been you." He paused to understand what the next line meant. "Better be prepared for this time, I won't go easy on you."

Derrick shrugged and threw the paper in the nearest trash can. He gathered his belongings together and compiled his books needed for the weekend for him to study. Once he grabbed everything, he took off towards his house. He walked with one paw in his pocket and the other on his strap. He made his way towards his house without any sort of trouble at first. The border collie trod those sidewalks for many years without issue. However, that note that Dawson gave him a bad vibe about it. The canine did his best to shake it off but somehow, the feeling just wouldn't go away.

He waited at a crosswalk for the signal to become white. He glanced down at his phone and texted his mother that he'll be home soon. He put the phone back in his backpack before he resumed walking. Once he crossed the street, he heard derogatory name calling coming from the basketball courts nearby. "Hey, cunt. CUNT!"

Derrick averted his eyes towards the source of the voice, finding that it was Dawson who was at school. The border collie quickly picked up his walking pace to avoid the attention but the lion sent his two lackeys to capture him. They quickly grabbed hold of his arms and dragged him towards the basketball courts where Dawson stood.

"Let me go, you fuckers. Ngh!" Derrick snarled as he struggled to break free from his grabbers. The hyena and wolverine brought him towards their leader. The collie glanced at the shirtless lion who wore gym shorts after he was kicked out. He must've gotten tired of the pants and wore something more comfortable. His abdominal and arm muscles did show though they were not as cut.

Both of his lackeys held him and the hyena worked his backpack off and tossed it off to the side while Craig pulled off Derrick's shirt as well, revealing his natural beauty as well. He wasn't as thick as Dawson but considering collies were lean, Derrick definitely had a fit frame himself. His eyes met Dawson's while the feline cracked his knuckles a bit.

"Let 'im go, boys," Dawson said which they did so on command while Derrick let himself free from their hold. The collie walked up to the lion, pressing chest against chest. "So, you wanna rematch from what happened at school eh?"

The feline nodded, punching Derrick in his stomach which the collie coughed as Dawson walked away from him. "Ya could say that. Now that I got expelled, thanks t' ya, I can focus on training for the FFA."

"FFA?" Derrick clarified as he slowly got himself up, regulating his breathing.

"Fur Fighters Association. Only the best of the best can be a part of it so a piece of shit like you couldn't cut it." The lion grinned while motioning his arms to come to him. "Come here if ya want t' prove me wrong. "

"What if I refuse?" The collie asked, while there was a hint of wanting to fight off his bully.

"I'm afraid you don't have a choice." Dawson quickly replied while he pulled back his right fist, following through towards Derrick's face. Derrick followed the motion and quickly gave the feline a kick to the ribs with his left foot. The feline flinched as he took it but Dawson launched his fists, keeping the collie at bay. Derrick kept his forearms up to protect his face from the onslaught attack.

Derrick flinched a bit, feeling the power behind the lion's attacks. The collie grimaced as Dawson's fists took their toll on him. The lion snickered as he elbowed him across the face but he pulled away from the strike, the canine snickering back before upper-cutting the feline's jaw. Dawson's jaw jerked back from the strike before Derrick struck the rib cage once again to phase him.

The lion roared loudly, after realizing he had blood trickling out from the corner of his mouth. He released his onslaught on Derrick, punishing him mercilessly and Tyler and Craig joined with punches to help their boss. Dawson grinned, keeping himself at an advantage through unfair means. The feline picked him up from the shoulders and shoved them towards his two buddies, who held him by the arms.

Derrick officially became the punching bag much to Dawson's delight. The feline smiled and gave punches to the abs. "Too bad you're on my most-hated list. I would've loved t' bang your ass and fuck wit' you. Since you've helped me get out of that dumbass school, I'm gonna fulfill my dream and become the best fighter there is." With that, he punched Derrick across the face and blood sprayed from his muzzle.

The collie held his ground against the feline's schemes. Derrick panted, his body was covered in sweat from the fight. His eyes caught the attention of a figure coming in behind Dawson and once he came into view, the collie smiled widely as the paw tapped on his shoulder. The feline turned around, and he felt an impact across his face while the other two goons looked at the unknown attack. Dawson recognized the hybrid. "You."

Derrick smiled widely, as he saw the hybrid from earlier come in with a blue compression shirt and shorts. He cracked his knuckles and gave a cocky grin. "You better keep your word or else, Derrick's going to kick the shit out of you."

Derrick grinned and readied his fists with Tyrese. "You want to do this again, pussy?"

Dawson growled and whistled towards his lackeys. Craig and Tyler beckoned to his calling. "You won't be so lucky next time, dog. I'll be a fighting champion in the FFA so you won't stand a bloody chance."

The three left the two at the basketball court. Tyrese smiled, patting Derrick's shoulder. "You okay, dog?"

The collie smiled, nodding his head before he spat out the saliva with blood. "Yah, bruh. Thanks for saving mah ass again."

"No prob, homey. Dawson can be a pussy when he has to fight with other people at his side but you got a good spirit." The hybrid said while his ears perked up as police sirens closed in on his location. The collie recognized the cop coming out of the car. Sirens flashed as it parked along the sidewalk. The tall cop approached the two youngsters and he recognized his son.

His blue eyes grew shocked as he saw Derrick beat up. "Holy shit, son. Derrick, are you okay?"

Tyrese stepped in and spoke on behalf. "Yes, off'cer. Your son got beat up by a couple of thugs but he held up good against them. One was a bigger guy too. I intervened and stopped the fight from becoming much worse."

Scott sighed with relief, taking off his hat and extended his paw towards Tyrese. "I'm his father, Scott Bates. Thank you for saving my son."

"Heh, no problem, sir." The hybrid said while Derrick approached his father with a stern look on his face.

"Pops, after I graduate from high school and some time off school, I'll be working towards getting myself into the FFA. I want to make sure that the guy who pounded me today gets what he deserves. He's going t' be joining 't now so I want t' make sure I get 'n."

Scott sighed as he looked at his son and scratched his head. "Well, I dunno how your mother would feel about this. It's a pretty dangerous sport and I'm not sure if it's the right environment for you."

Tyrese interjected politely. "If I may, sir. I have plans to join the FFA as well so I can keep your son company and keep him out of trouble."

"Well, that's all good but we really need to talk to our son as a family. I do thank you for saving him."

"Of course. I apologize. sir."

Derrick glanced at Tyrese for a moment while he went to get his belongings. The young border collie spoke to his father. "Pops, could we invite Tyrese t' dinner? Just t' thank him fer saving me."

Scott glanced at the hybrid, nodding his head and gave off a smile. "That's a good idea, kid. I'll let your mother know that we'll have one more person who is going to join us for dinner. I'll give her a call now." He excused himself and made a call to his wife.

Derrick and Tyrese glanced at each other, smiling towards each other and for the first time in Derrick's life, he officially made a friend who got along with him. The border collie smiled and curled his fingers into a fist and Tyrese did the same and they fist-bumped, marking a sign of friendship. The hybrid grinned after they did their gesture. "You're pretty strong. Hope we both make 't 'n the FFA."

"Same, bruh. I'd like t' kick Dawson's pussy."

"Haha, looking forward to that. Let's make that our dream then. We'll be homies going t' the FFA."

Derrick smiled widely and nodded. "Fuck yeah! Let's do this bitch."
