Pokemon beta emerald chapter 7: A challenge

When i think about it, I get in trouble a lot. I stare at the battlefield, a standard gym field, and the girl across from me, May. what am i thinking, she's probably a gym trainer how am I supposed to defeat her. Gym trainers are personally trained to test a challengers skills. there's no way a guy who had his pokemon less then a day could beat one.

"Hey, I can tell your shaking from here. How about you just get on your knees and apologize. Who knows I might forgive you for your rude behavior." May laughed at me. We could stop this, simply report her to the Gym leader and let them deal with it. I look to the side and see Calvin and his Zigzagoon, Ziggy, sulk. But would that really help the situation at all? If the GL actually cared, they would've stopped this already. "What's wrong, skitty got your tongue?"

"You talk a mean game for someone about to lose," why am i saying this?

"SO, how many pokemon do i have to beat to prove my superiority?" her cocky smile is pissing me off.

"I have two pokemon." Hope she plays fair.

"Fine, the battle will be a two on two battle. No switch out allowed." so i can't switch Treecko or Poochyena once they're out. "Do you accept?"

"Yeah."

"Fine then, Squirt," May pointed to Calvin, "you referee our battle." Calvin put Ziggy down and stood in the ref's spot, "you better not pull anything."

I shook my head, "Threatening a child, are you trying to win moral limbo?"

"Are you insulting me? Doesn't matter, I always win."

"There's a first for everything."

"If both trainers are ready," Calvin said, "please send out your first pokemon."

"I don't even need to use my best one to beat you," May pulled a Pokeball out of her pocket, "go Paddy." Light erupted from the pokeball, quickly taking the form a small dark blue quadrupled thing covered with a lily pad.

"You name your Lotad, Paddy?"

"So what?"

"Never mind," if she is using a Lotad, that could either mean this is either a water or grass type gym. Either way, i should be fine. "My turn, go Poochyena." I release him from his ball, and the second he fully formed, he bit my arm. "Why did i expect something different? I know you too well for something different to happen."

"HA, even your pokemon doesn't like you," May laughed.

"To be fair he has good reasons to dislike me." I pry him off my arm and place him on the floor, "alright Poochyena, this is our first trainer battle. You ready?" He gave a quick bark and face Lotad. I pulled out my pokedex and put it in battle mode. Okay, Poochyena has four moves: Fire Fang, Howl, Sand attack, and Bite. Out of the four, I should use Fire Fang less, I don't want to run out of it if she is a grass type trainer.

"Put that thing away! Are you planning to cheat with that?" She shouted.

"What no, it's a pokedex, this is just to help me in battle."

"So you are cheating!"

"No I-," just put it away it isn't worth the hassle, "Fine." I place the pokedex back in my pocket.

Calvin cleared his throat, "Since both trainers are ready. Being the battle!"

"This won't take long, Paddy use Bubble." Paddy took a took a deep breath and blew bubbles out of its mouth. The bubbles reflected the light as they slowly approach Poochyena, and i do mean slowly. They sort of drifted apart and floated along the battlefield.

"Okay, Poochyena use Howl," he howled, raising his attack up.I don't know if they're still dangerous but better be safe, "now while avoiding the bubbles, use Bite."

Poochyena charge at Paddy while avoiding the bubbles. "Got ya, Paddy Astonish." in an instant, something came out of Paddy. It was too fast for me to see, but i saw it collide with Poochyena. "Don't stop now. Paddy use Absorb," a beam appeared to come from Paddy's eye and hit Poochyena.

I get it, movement control. She used the bubbles to try to control my movement. If I am too cautious, she uses it to limit how i can attack and move, then attack with a clear shoot. "Poochyena, you alright?" Poochyena barked, seeming no worse to wear.

"Why don't you give up? I can already tell you will lose to me."

"You certainly talk a lot for someone who revealed their fatal flaw almost immediately."

"What!?" She really didn't notice?

"It's easier to show you. Poochyena use Bite, don't worry about the bubbles this time." he begun to charge to Paddy.

"So you grew a pair, Absorb." the eye beams appeared again.

"Sidestep it!" Poochyena manage to avoid it. "Good, focus on circling around and use Bite from behind Paddy."

" I won't let you! Keep using Absorb Paddy," again the attacks miss simply because Poochyena sidestep it. The second he was close, Poochyena bit the lily on top of Paddy and threw it. "Paddy!"

"Now finish it off with Fire Fang," flames erupted from Poochyena's mouth as he bite down on Paddy, causing the Lotad to get covered in flames before the mini explosion knocked it into the wall.

"Paddy get up!"

The Lotad was not moving, it was breathing, but i don't think it could just shake off what Poochyena did to it. "Since Paddy is knocked out," Calvin pointed his arm at me, "the winner of this round is Innes."

"Good job Poochyena," he did a little dance on the field as I congratulated him. Only one pokemon left.

"That was cheating," May yelled as she ran to Paddy.

"Cheating? I was using strategy!"

"You attacked Paddy from behind! How is that a strategy?" May called paddy back into its ball, "Blazer will make short of you." Blazer? That's an odd name for a grass or water type pokemon. May pulled out another pokeball, "Blazer, finish this." the light formed into a bipedal bird with yellow and orange feathers.

"Wait why do you have a Torchic?" Shit, I thought i could use Poochyena and Treecko to win this, but that seems to be more difficult now.

"Why wouldn't I; Blazer is my first pokemon. I got him when we moved here."

"We?"

"My dad, the gym leader, gave him to me so i can go take on the league challenge soon."

"Wait, why would a gym leader give a pokemon to one of its gym trainers to do the league challenge?"

"Who said i was a GT? I've been practicing, beat all the trainers in this area as part of my training to take the challenge for a while now."

"So, May, why don't you leave then and take the challenge? You not a GT, so nothing should be stopping you."

"I can explain," Calvin raised his voice, "in order for a minor to take the league challenge they need an adults permission."

"Shut it, Squirt," May snapped, "but he's right. I may be thirteen, but i still need my father's permission to challenge the league, but he won't give it! I've battled and beaten everyone in this city with Blazer and he still won't let me go. I took wilderness survival classes and even caught a Lotad, and he still won't let me challenge the league. I've proven I'm strong enough so why won't he let me go? Once I beat you, Dad will have to let me go on a journey. "

"It's not that simple." I think back to my parents and the day I left home. Despite having no experience and little knowledge, they force me onto a journey I have no interest in on a continent i just move to. May on the other hand wants to explore but can't. It almost feels like we're opposites in a way. "Why do you want to leave anyway? Your father obviously cares about you."

"HOW DO YOU NOT GET IT?! I want to be the best trainer in the world and I can't do it staying in this city. What's better than being the most powerful trainer in the world: Nothing. I'm going to conquer the league and prove i'm the best. You and all the other losers here are just a stepping stone to me."

"I can see it," I say, "I can see why your father won't allow you to go off on your own."

"What?"

"The way you're acting screams your not ready to be a trainer. You not only disrespect trainers but also their pokemon as well. I seen it plenty of time back home, people claiming only winning matters and those who would easily cross any lines to succeed. You can't even accept how pathetic you are."

"Pathetic, take that back. Blazer Scratch." The Torchic ran to Poochyena.

"Sand Attack," Poochyena turned away from Blazer and kicked up dirt with his back paws.

"Blazer stop," He stopped on a dime, neither tripping over himself or wobbling, "keep out of range of that Sand Attack and just use Ember." Small flames flew flew from Blazer's beak, hitting Poochyena's tail and setting it on fire.

"Poochyena, drop and roll, that'll put the fire out."

"Blazer, Scratch," as Poochyena rolled around to put the fire out, Blazer took the opportunity and attack with its claws.

"Poochyena," he was trapped and Blazer kept bringing down his claws onto Poochyena, "I surrender."

"Innes wish to withdraw Poochyena. So the winner on this round is May." I move to Poochyena as Calvin declared May the winner.

When i picked him up, Poochyena gave me a sour look. "Look you did enough just rest." Before i was able to return him to his ball, he bit me one last tite. I'm at a huge disadvantage, Treecko is a grass type going against a fire type. I'm going to have to play smart if I want to win.

"Stop stalling and bring out Blazer's next punching bag already," the Torchic looked just as arrogant as the trainer.

I pulled out Treecko's ball and squeeze it. This girl pisses me off so much. "Come out, Treecko." Treecko came out of his ball, his red bandana contrasting his green skin, or is it scales? Treecko stared down the Torchics eyes, showing no hint of backing down.

"Really that's you last pokemon? What a joke. Blazer will burn him into submission."

"Nope," I reply.

"What?"

"I plan to win this thing. Treecko here will beat you and put you in your place," Treecko glanced back at me and nod before returning his gaze on Blazer.

She laughs, "So you think your puny Grass type and beat Blazer. Try it, Ember!" small flames erupt from Blazer's beak again.

"Dodge it," Treecko moved out of the way.

"Keep using Ember Blazer!"

She's going to keep using till either Treecko's down or Torchic is too tired to use it. Let's help with the latter, "Treecko, Use Quick Attack to move around the field." Treecko started to move faster as he dodge the Embers. "Just focus on dodging for now."

Treecko moved around the battlefield, dodging all the Embers coming his way. After some time I got the results I was looking for. Blazer stopped blowing Embers at Treecko. "Blazer, keep going." When he tried to fire more, nothing came out of his beak.

"Now that you lost your greatest weapon, let's see you act cocky now. It's time to go on the offense. Treecko, start with Pound."

"Move it," Blazer took the hit, being too tired to move out of the way in time. Blazer went down in one hit, breathing hard on the ground. He attempted to get up but quickly gave up. "Blazer NO!"

"Blazer is down, that means the winner of this match is Innes."

"Alright, we did it," Treecko jumped on me and tried to hug me. "You did so amazing, i'm proud of you, little buddy."

"That was awesome," Calvin rushed to my side, holding Ziggy, "you beat May, you're the strongest trainer in this city."

"You exaggerating," I look over to May, holding Blazer in her arms, looking like she was about to cry. I walked over to her, "May." She looked perplexed as i stretch my hand out to her, "that was a good battle I hope-"

She slapped it away, "cut the crap cheater!"

"Cheater? I beat you fair and square."

"No you didn't you cheated using that bandanna."

I step back, "you mean this? This is just a regular bandanna, there is nothing special about it."

"Liar," She yelled as she reach for Treecko. I move my hand to protect him when suddenly.

"Enough," a loud voice boomed into the room. A man with black hair slicked back and cargo pants stood in a doorway. The jacket he wore was zipped down enough to see the white undershirt he wore underneath.

May ran over to the him, "Dad there are a bunch of cheater and-" May didn't finish before the man slapped her in the face.

We all stared at them, shocked at what we saw. "May, go to your room." the way he talked reminded me of my own father, he used the same voice that terrified when i crossed some line he explain.

"But Father,"

"May, I will not tell you a third time, go to you room." tears ran down May's face as she fled from the room. The man turned to me, "I would like to apologize for my daughter's behavior, come in we have some things to talk about."
