Part 1 - Tidal Waves It was a very cool and cold fall day. Leaves were blazing brilliant colors o reds, yellows, ambers, oranges and with a hint of snow in the air, this November day was shaping up to be a nice one. Nyx's parents and family had planned to oin her and her mate at their place in Pine Ridge, Minnesota this year for Thanksgiving seeing that earlier this year, the last of Snowballs living family members who actually cared about him had passed away. Last Christmas his little sister was killed when a drunk driver slammed into the car she was riding in and earlier this year his Grandfather, who had raised them both for most of their lives, saving them a life of drunken abuse from their father had passed away. It was no secret that Nyx's father didn't get along with or like Snowball, but even than to lose the last of your family, even he couldn't bear to see him suffer by himself. And so with much convincing mostly her father swallowing his pride and asking directly, their holiday was set. But there was a reason for his dislike. And not so much Snowball as a person but the product of their relationship.

And with the sound of crunching leaves and high pitched giggling, the problem had become quite clear. Snowball landed with a thud as their 2 year old daughter ran and fell into him as he caught her. Nyx sniffled her laughter at the little husky-elf hybrid. Lunabelle, a name that struck a chord with them both. Luna being his sister's name and Belle was his mother's name. She was taken from them btoh at a very young age, his father behind the wheel, drunk and never charged with his mother's death. To him what he had left in this world, he felt was all that he had left and he was holding onto it as tightly as he could, refusing to let go when life kept trying to throw him ffree.

Lunabelle was quite adorable. Her gray over white fur on her digit grade feet and legs as well as her husky hands and buz cut style fur on her elf ears and husky tail refleting her fathers, sharing her mothers ears and humanoid face despite it being smooth, coffee creamer skin, just like her torsso, upper arms and upper legs. This was never something he wanted. Nyx knew it. They had taken every precaution that night, but life threw a curve ball and despite it they agreed maybe it was best to put her up for adoption when she was born. That was the plan until he held her tiny little body against his chest and felt her heartbeat ever so gentle. Something inside him had snapped, had changed as if everything he knew about himself, was different. He couldn't bear to part with Lunabelle and by God he'd find a way to make it work.

But with all kids comes newer challenges, like not blasting his music in the Trac when they went out, and knowing they'd never be able to off road for a while so long as they had her, at least til she was older. But for now the last couple of years drew them even tighter and despite her father's protests, there was naught to be done. Nyx had made it clear, he didn't have to like his granddaughter or her choise of a mate, but he could either deal with it or get the hell out of her life and stop casting a negative shadow on a soul who was already broken and struggling to find his footing in liffe. She always was good for him. Despite their rocky past and history together.

But today was;nt the day to dwell on those memories. Today was the day to enjoy the outdoors before the inevitable snow storm that was predicted. Both of them clad in hoodies, they wouldn't offer much protection soon after. She always thought snowball was insane for having no sleeves on his hoodie but you know Huskies and their double coats. Truth be told he could last all winter without a shirt, but he chose not to, mostly because it takes a lot of energy to do that. Today, heover he sait there, Lunabelle sitting in his lap throwing the leaves up and giggling as they came down, a smile on his face like had never been seen before. The winds rustling the leaves was the only sound before being broken by a familiar ringtone. Nyx went and answered the call. It was her sister, Marylou.

"Hey sis, what can I do for you?" she answered, "Jacob and I are landing in about 20 minutes, don't suppose you could head up to the airport and pick us up? I saw the radar and you know how insane it will be to get a cab." Nyx sighed, "I'll send him to pick you guys up, there's no way I 'm putting my daughter in the car in this weather, although he isn't going to be too happy about this." The giggling of their daughter and his chuckling could be heard through the phone, "I can tell," Marylou had said, "I hate to break up his joyous fun, but...." Nyx interrupted when her sister paused, "Not a problem, he'll get over it, he always does. I'll have him run us home and than send him up to Duluth, shold be there in 45 minutes to an hour." "Sounds great, tell him we'll see him there. By the way mom and dad will be flying in next week just in time, be prepared for that argument." Nyx laughed, "It was dad's idea this time." "Voluntarily?!" Marylou exclaimed. "Yeah he felt bad for him, losting his family like that. I guess deep down there is a shred of humanity. I'll get the usual lecture but hopefully he'll leave him alone." Nyx almost sighed, fighting back the tears, knowing she could feel how hurt he still was. "Well all will be okay, Jacob and I will deflect for you both if need be." "Thanks, see you when you get here sis." and with that Nyx ended the call.

"Hey fuzz butt," Nyx exlcaimed, "Jacob and Marylou arelanding at Duluth International in 20 minutes need you to drop the little one and I off and you gotta go get them before this storm hits." The look of joy wassucked out of his face, "What? But why me? Can't they get a cab?" Nyx shook her head, "You try getting a cab when their saying blizzard conditions. Besides, if something does happen, the Trac is equipped to handle it." Snowball sighed, "Aright. C'mon Lunabelle, we'll come back tomorrow, I need to run a special errand so you and mommy get to have some fun now." Lunabelle looked almost sad but that child was so easy going, it's a wonder who she got that from, Nyx or Snowball.

The ride up to the Duluth airport had been pretty okay. It was beginning to sleet a bit but nothing his Trac couldn't handle. The problem he had was people who couldn't learn to drive in this weather. And it's not like it had anything to do wit his daughter, he always hated people who lived in his area and didn't brother learning to drive properly in winter. That's not to say the day he brought Lunabelle home from the hospital that he drove 10 miles UNDER the speed limit. Maybe he was more cautious back than. Who knows. The Airport, by the time he got there and began circling or pickup was jammed pretty bad, people getting in just before the storm hit. Half the airlines were predicting canceled flights and those leaving ahead of the storm were getting ready as quickly as possible. The sounds of the honking horns, engines, airliners taking off and landing, was beginning to grind on his head and cause a small headache. Fortunately on his 8th pass he spotted the elven pair and he dove in as fast as he could. He put his Trac in park and decided to go help them out with their luggage, "So how does it feel to be back in the great frozen north, Marylou?" She shook her hed, "Charming as ever powderhound I see you're still driving this off road death trap." Jacob looked at the heavily modified Sport Trac and than at the other two Death....Trap?" Snowball shook his head "That's what she calls it. We got stuck in the mud and the person pulling us out because my winch was jammed didnt follow direction and rolled us over The only reason there was minimal damage to the shell was the roll cage inside and she wasn't even in the trac at the time, now were you Marylou?" Marylou shook her head stifling a laugh as she got in the back seat and Jacob got in the front seat.

Jacob wasn't used to racing seats and was amazed that the front seat reclined partially. "Interesting," he said as he struggled with the 6 point harness "Think that's awesome? I have heater controls buitl into the front and rear seats too. Not to mention all that fancy upgraded blind spot tech. Gotta love aftermarket parts." "And a burning hole in your wallet grease ball." Marylou tended to take as many shots at him as possible. All in good fun though. "So tell me Snowball how do you afford to do those kind of things?" "I have an interesting line of work lets leave it at that." Marylou wasnt about to let him weasel out of that. "Hes one of the local DJ's down at Pine Ridge University. DJ Iditarod The Last Dull, I mean Great DJ, right?" Snowball facepawed hard, still managing to keep the vehicle on the road as they drove through the weather and onto the highway out of the city. "What?" she said, "You aren't proud of that gig?" "There is a difference between pride and bragging. Of which I am nether. It's a job, I get paid for it. Lets leave it at that. Besides everyone knows that I do that on the weekends. I still work at Redline Tuning." Jacob remarked, "Oh right, Nyx told me about the rust bucket you race."

It was hard for him to be proud of anything he did when he was on the air. The only reason he did it is during his time in college, his sister encouraged him to apply for the job. He started out small but gained a huge following, but when she was killed it was if the passion left him. It was sad that these feelings of regret were hanging on. But he had to remidn himself to not dwell on the past. The trip home was very slow. The weather was getting worse and his cb had a NOAA weather alert function that was broadcasting a winter weather advisory. Marylou had fallen asleep from the comfort of the rough ride. His custom shocks lulling her to sleep. "You know," Jacob said, "I've been curious. How did you and Nyx meet?" "Funny story I guess, but it was in College. I never knew her in high school, I was graduating when she came in....But it was a at a party I remember....."

Several Years Earlier.... Pine Ridge University buzzed with new students, a lot of them way younger than Snowball, at least for the incoming freshmen. He was already 21 and had registered for several shop and automtoive classes. In high school Snowball was an ace baseball catcher, the only lower classman to be on the varsity team and led them to 4 consecutive state championships. So good that the Minnesota Twins scouted him for their farm system and he was shipped off to their single-a baseball team. What had been exciting to him was that he was going to do something he loved, be a professional player. But things didn't go as planned. He was taken out badly by a rival player who slid cleats first into him in the shin and caused a serious break, The damage had been repaired and he rehabbed well but by the end of the season, he had opted out of his contract. His bubble had been burst by players that played dirty and he lose his spark. He fell back to his home and signed up to join his sister at the college. Rather than live on campus they stayed at home with their grandfather opting to rotate pooling each other to classes and jobs when necessary. And today they were on campus mulling about before their morning classes, getting to know the place.

It wasnt long before they met up with some relatively.....well to do people. We're talking the wlathy old money type in their very expensive clothing versus the siblings in their cheap clothing, not that either o them cheeped out but you get where that is going. The leader of the group of these guys and girls was a Fox by the name of Chad., "Well, well gents....look what we have here, a couple of lost homeless pups." Everyone laughed but before snowball could stop his sister she absolutely went off the handle, her cheery nature turning into a firey rage. "Wow, I didn't know that Gucci and Armani rejects were allowed outside the burn pit. What's the matter, did Daddy cut you off and make you buy Chinese knockoffs? Or are you still sporting your two thousand and late fashion?" Everyone went silent aside from Snowball snickering at the retort he just heard. Chads face went beet red but ended up smiling t the pair, "Clever, very clever. Witty tongue on you, don't tell m you get it ffrom him," as hee pointed at snowball, "I can appreciate that. Chad Jaymes, the Third. You both are?" Snowball looked at Chad and said, "Just Snowball, that's my sister Luna, and before you even ask about the nickname Im not going into it." Chad looked a bit surpried at the the response and simply said, "Fair enough. So I know Luna's incoming, what about you? Biit old for the new kids." Snowball shook his head, "Lets just say my minor league career backfired on me, which is fine. At least it's something to fall back on.." The gears were turning inside Chad's head. But no one noticed or thought anything of it. "Tell you both what, we're throwing a party for some of the new freshman, you both should come, it'l be this weekend." And with tht he wrote down the address and handed it to the pair before wandering off with his group. They didn't really get a chance to answer either but hey, why not.

The week went slow as they plowed through thir first week. And come friday evening, Luna began to feel a bit ill. Because she was a runt when she was born she struggled with a comproised immune system and it wasn't uncommon for her to catch all sorta of colds. But that just dampened her mood as she wasnt able to go. But despite her brothers protesting he reluctantly went on her behest for the two of them. It was a decision that he wouldn't regret. He showed up and met Chad who took him inside. It was your typical party, beer bottles, kegs, chips, the works. It reeked of girls getting taken advantage of, but he did try to relax and just fit in. Beer in hand he casually hung around the living room chatting with different people, a couple who remembered seeing him when he was still playing minor league ball. It wasn't too bad. Until h heard the entire uproar of laughter. He turned to see a slightly curvy elf girl completely soaked in beer with a humiliating look on her face as she rapidly fled out the front door. 'Don't Get Involved.' screamed his head, but he got up anyways and headed out the same door. The atmosphere to him had changed when he realized all these guys were doing was humiliating anyone that they didn't like.

He stepped out onto the porch, fall was here but it was still a balmy 70 degrees. "Here, this should keep you warm," he said to the girl as he took his hooded t-shirt off and handed it to her. The girl looked around and took the shirt, not sure if he ws part of what ust happened, "Th-thanks....I uh.....make sure I bring it back." "Keep it," Snowball said as he stood there with ust his fishnet top on, "You might need it. Hey you okay? Didn't see what happened but It didn't sound like it was pleasant." She nodded shyly, embarrassed and upset as she changed into the shirt, "Yes. I mean no, I mean.....their all....." "Jerks?" he said. "Yeah." but that was all she could muster, she was fighting back the tears but he wasn't bout to let hr night get ruined either. "Hey you wanna go somewhere.....civilized like get something to eat?" The girl looked puzzled and a bit frightened, given that what had just happened, could you blame her? But even so sshe didn't feel unsafe in his presense. Than again he didnt give her a reason to. She nodded and said, "Sure." "So, sure, you got a name?" Humor became a defensive weapon of his and this time it ended up being a bit of an ice breaker. "N-Nyx," she said has she stiffled a laugh. "They call me Snowball. Its a nickname and its nothing more than that." The two of then walked to his vehicle as they got in and left for anything that was open.

They found a small diner and went in. What turned out to be an awkward meeting turned into a conversation both were comfortable with. He wanted to know what the prank was but he wasn't willing to ask. He did get the feeling it may have involved her weight seeing as the skinny girls were being hit on but he opted to not even cross that line. But they bantered on about where they were from, what they were doing in classes and for what, likes dislikes and as it turned out they had a lot in common. And it wasn't long before the arrow was fired. After dinner he drove her back to her apartment and after walking her to the door he, without thinking, reached in to kiss her. Well the arrow cn hit two right? She didn't resist. the elven girl reached up into the kisses before breaking it off and saying, "Heres my number, see you on campus.......

Back in the present....... "Really?" Jacob said, "You meet her and took advantage of her emotional state from a prank about her weight?" Snowball rolled his eyes,, "Good God no. I didn't know that was going to happen and to this day neither off us know why we ended the night like that. I just didn't want her to have a bad night so I took her out of a bad situation. Doesnt really matter, we're still together so that has to count for something. Don't tell me you did the whole Romeo and Juliet theatrics.." Jacob sighed trying to hide the fact tht he went so far over the top that it took him year to get his wife to notice him, "Of-of course not,, that's totally lame. No one does that." But snowball smiled to himself knowing full well he did. After all he got along with Nyx''s sister so he knew things that Jacob didn't think he knew about. "So, about that rust bucket of yours, you still racing that wreck of a Talon?" He nodded as he took the off ramp and got onto the country road into town, "Just finished the compound turbo setup, should balance the supercharger nicely. Hoping to take the rally next spring. Been a lot of saving to pull this off, especially since I wont put anything before Lunabelle." Working in a tuning shop really did help with what he needed, making it easier to get parts made at lower cost. It wasn't long before he turned into the driveway and into the garage.

When all three of the got into the house it was a bit of a joyous moment becuse the snow storm had started and with any luck their parents would make it before the heaviest began to fall. For now it was a happy reunion as they gathered in the living room talking and cheering, Lunabelle happy to be back in her daddy's arms.
