The 4th Dimensional Room (Introduction)

Story by Imaginaut on SoFurry

I had a hard time getting this to fit on the front page, so I'm uploading it separately to make it easier for you to read! Enjoy!

Before you, a mysterious door has appeared. Behind it, a small living room awaits, a warm fire in the hearth in the far end, a sofa chair placed in perfect symmetry on either side of its crackling flames. On one side, what appears to be a man wearing a strange mask sits, one leg crossing the other, book in hand. Something about him does not seem human, however. Finally, he looks up, as though pulled out of a trance from the letters on the page.

"Hello, I am The Imaginaut, welcome to my humble abode. Come on in!"

He gestures a wave with his hands, standing and shuffling over to you, his motions fluid and filled with an odd level of grace.

"Please, take a seat!"

He takes your front appendage, be it paw, hand or claws, into his own hands, and guides you to the nearest sofa chair. As if by magic, it seems to have changed its shape, matching your very size for maximum comfort! After both of you sit, he continues in his growing excitement for his new guest - you!

"Would you like some tea? Coffee?"

He picks up a kettle, and begins poring it into a cup that seems to be made for your grip. And out from the spout, to your surprise, comes your favorite beverage, cold or hot, just the way you like it... He peers into the cup for a moment, then raises his head to face you, commenting, "well, I wasn't quite expecting that!"

He sits back into his own chair, setting your cup on a coaster in front of you. "And I'll have some Camomile tea, thank you!" He takes the same kettle, and as though a miracle, camomile tea fills his own teacup in hand. Then, taking a sip (which is impressive, since there is no hole for his mouth on the mask,) he begins to talk some more.

"So, I hear you are interested in my stories, are you? Please, be my guest! I would love to see you enjoying yourself in my company."

He gestures to the wall beside you, showing off several clipped stacks of paper, books and the like. Odd... you never noticed that there until now!

"Go ahead, choose one! You won't regret it. I guarantee my stories are so enthralling, it'll almost be like you're there!"

Cautiously, you pick one up. The letters on the page seem to glow with life, and before you realize it, you find you can't look away...

"Ah, you chose that one... good choice."

He chuckles a bit, sounding farther and farther away by the second. Out of the corners of your eyes, everything around you seems to melt away, every envisioned bush, pebble and cloud seeming to appear around you more and more. The words from the page practically leap from the pages as you could hear every footstep, every word, and see every face they described! It felt so real... so real in fact, you aren't even holding the paper any more. You are the main character in the story, going about their day, looking through their eyes and saying the things they say. Trapped in the story's world, you find yourself too entranced to do anything but see this play to its conclusion, both from curiosity and your own compulsive desire to see how it ends.

And just like that, you come to your senses, holding the last page in front of you, dumbfounded as you realize that somehow... you had never left the room?

The strange person bends down and picks up the scattered pages on the floor. "Well? Did you like it?"

Disturbed, you excuse yourself, and quickly make your way out of the room, ending back exactly where you were, although many hours later. From behind the fading doors, he leaves one last remark:

"If you ever feel bored and need to read a good story, please... come again...!"

And with that, the mysterious man behind the fading door is gone, leaning you to contemplate what just happened.

And all you have to do to experience it all again?
