Rising Anew chapter 7 continued

The slowness astounded Narcenac. His body seemed to move a fraction slower than normal as the fangs grew closer and closer. It seemed as though he had the time to inspect every feature on the golden serpent. Its scales were a dusty gold and had a strange pattern of brown speckles down its back with a dark green underbelly. It was unlike anything he had ever seen before. He knew from the big fangs this creature would deliver death.

"I REFUSE!!!" he roared as he slammed his fist into the side of the snake's head sending it hurling through the grass. He looked over in time to see the screeching Tarsus slip her blade into the top of a little blue snake's head, killing it instantly.

"Narina!!" he thought as he turned to see her biting into the back of another golden snake's throat.

Hissing errupted from the grass everywhere as snakes fled in all directions to avoid the same fate as their three bretheran. As they faded into the night, Narcenac picked up the golden serpant that had attacked him and looked it in the face. It was quiet and still.

"Must be dead." he thought when suddenly its eyes started moving and the beast began to writhe in an attempt to escape. He only squeezed its neck until it was still and then swung it into a tree, snapping its spine.

Looking around, he found Narina wiping her mouth clean and Tarsus wiping her little dagger on some grass. Walking over to tarsus, he grabbed her by the tail and lifted her into the air as she squeeked in pain.

"Why didnt you tell us about them before we came out this direction?! Narina was almost bitten and so was i!" he shouted in her grimacing face. Slowly he lowered her. "Im sorry for hurting you, but you could have gotten us both killed. Be smarter than that."

Tarsus wiped a tear away as she rubbed her tail and nodded. "Tarsus sorry... her no wanted yousa to get hurted. Tarsus just no know they come tonightsa..." she sniffled.

Helping Narina up to her feet, Narcenac nodded silently and motioned that it was passed.

"Just take us to the water, we all need a drink after that." he said sternly.

Laying in the cool of the cave, the three companions rested in total quiet. Narcenac sat near the edge of a small creek that flowed through the cave, cleaning the snake carcasses. He saw no reason to waste the meat and so he had spent the last half hour working on all three.

Narina had filled their water bottles and was now drying off from a cool bath she had taken. She was softly brushing her tail and humming now as she watched the unoppressive Tarsus splash about in the water. The night's events weighing on her thoughts and making her wonder what would cause anything to attack like that. She had never heard of snakes attacking in groups before. Finally she just decided that this world she had been thrust into was something she would have to learn about over time.

"We will just have to stay here tonight, there isnt enough time to find another hiding spot tonight and this one is easy enough to remain hidden in for the night." Narcenac said as he wrapped the snake meat in the leather he had put his old meat into.

Narina and Tarsus both nodded. Then out of nowhere. Tarsus grinned a sly grin that only Narina caught. Shaking her head, Narina watched as the little shesquirrell made a big splash and drenched Narcenac.

Narcenac stood slowly as the water made his fur droop and glared at the little girl and then at the barely contained laughter of Narina. "So this is funny huh?" he said as he took a step towards her, "Just hilarious huh? Well, how about this?!" Narcenac scooped Narina up and jumped into the creek next to Tarsus with a roar.

The night around the cave entrance rang with laughter and the girl's excited squeels of enjoyment as the trio happily relaxed from the nights walk.
