Chapter 1

Yoka was pacing around back and forth in the sunset in front of Kura Castle. His katana was bouncing back and forth by his side and his necklace shaped like a water drop was swaying side to side on his neck. Yoka was a teenaged flame lizard and wore a pale blue shirt with a white stripe going across the middle and icy white shorts. His chest had the magical fire symbol imprinted on the shirt, but no matter what he did, the symbol always showed regardless of how much clothing Yoka puts on. Yoka had ocean blue eyes. When he was younger, they had been red, but they turned blue for some odd reason. They started turning blue about the same time he started wearing his necklace.

Today was the day he told himself. Today, the flame lizard was finally going to apply to become stronger. He was ready, he told himself. He could do it. He shouted as he motivated himself for the coming hardships. He hesitantly walked to the door. Yoka was about to knock when he heard a scream pierce the air and quickly dove for the nearest bush.

The lizard watched in fear as he saw an explosion at the entrance of the castle. The doors flew open and Yoka saw three dogs get blasted out of the castle. The doors quickly slammed shut. The three dogs got up and looked mortally wounded.

"QUERON TE!" one of them shouted angrily. He stood up and created a large ball a fire in his hands. He aimed quickly and threw the ten meter wide fireball at the castle.

Instantly the castle doors opened once more and a large gust of wind stormed through. The ball of fire was quickly repelled and blasted the three dogs. The dogs were sent soaring through the sky from the impact. The timid fire lizard hiding in the nearby bushes was no longer there.

Yoka ran through the village of Serka, a small little village just off of the map, somewhere in the mountains. He had lived there his whole life. Yoka had lived with his parents, but they had died a long time ago when he was barely a year old. Yoka had no memories of his parents, and for some reason, he didn't care. He was never curious of who his parents were. As Yoka ran, he accidently crashed into a water turtle knocking both animals to the ground.

"Ouch" the water turtle said rubbing its head, "Oh it's you Yoka." The water turtle stood up and helped Yoka up. It was Yoshi. Yoshi was a teenage water turtle just barely older then Yoka. He wore a white shirt with shorts of navy blue. Unlike most turtles, Yoshi preferred not to wear his shell. He also wore a blue top hat with a white stripe. He always wore that old hat and never took it off no matter where he went. It was a gift from his dad who disappeared when Yoshi was little. Yoshi had a water symbol imprinted on his shirt. Everyone had a symbol on them; it was just the way the world was. He had eyes as blue as the ocean, almost exactly like Yoka's, except a deeper blue. Yoshi carried a large spear on his back, which was much longer and the moon-shaped blade much larger than the average spear. Yoka never saw him use the spear in battle, but he knows that Yoshi has excellent combat skills with a regular spear.

Unlike most animals, Yoshi was actually nice to Yoka. When they were young, Yoka was always belittled. Yoka never understood why, but he guessed it was because he was timid. One day, some flame lizards came up to him. The group then started criticizing on Yoka's flaws and said that he was a great disgrace to the flame lizard race. Yoka, scared out of his wits, just stood there frightened. The flame lizards became furious at Yoka for not being brave enough to even reply to them, and so the ravaging gang proceeded to beat him up. They punched, they kicked, and they bit. Throughout the beating, Yoka was scared stiff and could not do anything. They assaulted him for hours. Yoka suffered internal bleeding and was gravely wounded. "They're going to kill me" Yoka thought saddened, he didn't care anymore. Yoka felt that he being alive was a waste of a life, until he came.

One of the flame lizards was about to land the finishing blow, but a blurred figure kicked the flame lizard with tremendous force. Yoka could hear cartilage being shattered as the flame lizard was knocked back into a tree, fainting from the devastating blow. The others had a shocked look on their face, mouths gaping and awestruck by their formidable new foe. Unsurprisingly, the unnamed terrorizers fled the scene, giving a high-pitched yelp.

"Hey, are you alright?" the figure asked. Yoka realized that the figure was a water turtle, but unlike most water turtles Yoka has seen, this one did not wear a shell, nor did he need to, thought Yoka. Yoka, still stunned from what the water turtle had done, was left speechless. Nobody was ever kind to him, let alone rescued him from harm. The water turtle let out a small smile and said, "Come now, let's get you cleaned up." The water turtle then helped Yoka to his feet and they left the hideous scene. Ever since that faithful day, the two animals have been the greatest of friends.

Yoshi was an indomitable water turtle. He was able to go through the training program at the Kura Castle; the same one Yoka had just tried to enter. Most animals had failed the program but Yoshi was able endure its harsh regimen. Although they had only known each other for a few years, they had become very close friends. Yoshi was a nice animal, but he did not have many close friends whom he could rely on. Yoka couldn't really tell why though.

"So did you apply yet?" Yoshi asked.

"Umm..." Yoka replied looking embarrassed.

"You ran away again didn't you?"

"Just a smidge." Yoka smiled innocently.

"What is that, the seventh try?"

"Ninth." Yoka gave a nervous laugh.

"It's okay, I'm sure you'll get in eventually." Yoshi said with an encouraging smile. Although Yoshi have told him that many times, his smiles always made Yoka feel better.

"Are you sure you don't want me to come with you next time?" Yoshi asked.

"No thank you, it's okay. I think I can get in next time."

"Ha, that's what you said five tries ago" Yoshi replied. The two laughed aloud.

"So what are doing later?" Yoshi asked

"Umm, nothing really, you want to come over or something?"

"Yeah sure, that would be cool." The two started making their way toward Yoka's house walking side by side.

"Oh yeah Yoshi," Yoka started, "Did you ask out Ryn yet?" Yoshi had been in love with a particularly attractive lightning mouse named Ryn. He made it extremely obvious that he likes Ryn, so naturally everyone but Ryn knew about it.

Yoshi was constantly being told that it would never work out between them because he was a water turtle and she a lightning mouse, water animals did not get along well with the lightning animals, but Yoshi simply did not care, it was his first love, and that was all that mattered to him.

Although Yoshi really liked Ryn, he was too scared to admit it. Strange, Yoka thought, 50 tons of falling boulders do not even phase Yoshi, but the 95 pound lightning mouse made him tremble in anxiety.

"Nah, not yet" Yoshi replied embarrassed.

"Come on why not?" Yoka badgered, "I mean let me get this straight, you've fought in death matches against criminals, jumped off the side of mountains for fun, climbed a huge cliff in the middle of a massive earthquake, but you can't to talk to the girl you've been friends and in love with for a few years."

"Yeah pretty much," Yoshi said scratching the back of his head.

"How bad can it be?"

"Very," Yoshi said plainly, "And you will never know how bad it is until you experienced it for yourself."

"It can't be that bad."

"Hah, I'll remember that when you get a nervous breakdown in front of a girl" Yoshi laughed.

Yoka gave a sheepish smile at the comment. Suddenly he felt Yoshi put his arm around him.

"Come one don't be like that," Yoshi said smiling, "You know you can just tell me what's on your mind,"

"Heh, nothing gets by you huh Yoshi?" Yoka said a little nervously.

"You know it," Yoshi said still smiling, "So what's wrong?"

"Umm, I don't really feel comfortable talking about it in public, mind if we talk about it when we get to my house?"

"Yeah sure no problem," Yoshi said assuring Yoka. Yoka felt relieved. He liked Yoshi, Yoshi was ready to talk with him whenever Yoka needed it. Truth be told, Yoka had many secrets, but he kept them mostly to himself because he was always persecuted when they were younger. Yoka felt happy that he finally had someone whom he could tell anything to and still be friends with.

"Oh yeah Yoka," Yoshi started "did you hear about what happened to the Kairyome?"

"Kairyome?" Yoka asked, "You mean the one organization that keeps trying to recruit you?"

"Yeah that one."

"What happened?"

"Apparently one of the members of the organization betrayed his partner and ran off with a special item."

"Special item?" Yoka inquired "You one of those magic items that could destroy large cities just like that?"

"Yup" Yoshi answered calmly, "rumor has it that he stole it and is on the run looking for more."

"Wow, kind of makes me glad that we live in the middle of nowhere," Yoka laughed nervously.

"Hah, yeah," Yoshi laughed as well.

"I kind of feel bad for the partner" Yoka said suddenly.

"What do you mean?"

"You know how the Kairyome work, once you join, you get one partner and you're stuck with him or her forever. They've probably worked together for a really long time, and then all of sudden the guy gets betrayed by this animal who he knew and worked with for almost his whole career."

"I see what you mean" Yoshi sighed, "Well at least that'll never happen between us."

"Really?" Yoka asked hopefully.

"Well of course!" Yoshi laughed, "Nothing, and I mean nothing, is ever going to come between us. No matter what happens, we will always be best friends Yoka and that's never going to change."

"Heh, yeah you're right, I feel silly for even thinking that you would ever betray me." The two friends laughed together as they finally reached Yoka's house. Little did the two friends know, Yoshi was dead wrong.
