Chapter 2

I could feel my legs extending out, and then retracting back in over and over. Soft sand moving out of the way for my feet, a audible and airy breeze blowing warm air onto us.

Every dune was bigger than the last, the wind climbing over the dune would occasionally whistle and howl at us. Mocking us, as running up loose sand turned us to a snail's pace. Even with my body's runner build, climbing up a single dune was as hard as running a mile. The sand would continuously push you down, as if it were trying to hide something at the top.

By the time a strange heap of metal on wheels was visible, we all slowed down to a rest. We were all panting, and I used this time to look back at the city. K - 98 glimmered under the sun, the walls I escaped under were just barely visible from here. A large building stood out from the rest, going up almost as high as the sandy mountains in the distance. It was obviously not built by furs, and I recognized it as Kaw's citadel.

When Kaw first invaded planet Earth, they went for all the main cities. Dubai, Las Vegas, New York, etc. They pushed all the civilians from neighboring towns or countries into these cities, and bordered off the walls. The world's militaries did put up a fight however, and a 13 hour war lasted around the Earth. By the end, we ended up having to surrender. It takes 5 of us to kill one of them, not to mention they had spaceships, and we had fighter jets.

Only a lucky few have seen a Kaw's true form, before the attack they all put on a disguise to look like furs, usually canines. Once they had Earth under their control, they turned civilians into resource slaves. And ever since we have had to dig, mine, or collect for Kaw. K - 98 is just slang for Las Vegas, the town I was shoved into.

"Beautifully scary, isn't it?" Rev asked, watching me stare at the glistening casinos, large hotels, and the giant ships hovering around the citadel.

I let my soldiers slump back, and I replied. "Yep, and there is a million more cities just like this, some even bigger"

I bend down, and start running my hand through the soft sand, feeling the warmness of it caused by the sun. A younger voice starts speaking. "We can manage guys, as long as the pack stay's hidden in the desert for now, we will eventually be able to get to the woods of Colorado."

Rev snorts a look of distrust. "And just what will we do there? Build wood cabins and live hiding from danger around every corner?"

I reply just before Ky's mouth opens. "Guys come on, if we build an army of people, we could at least make a dent at trying to overthrow a city like K - 98."

"Are you mad?" Ky and Rev respond in sync, and Rev continues. "We only have about 3 others back at the camp, and it's harder than you think to rescue people, besides that we only have a few weapons anyways."

I give it a quick thought. "But aren't there other camps out there? There has got to be something we can do."

"Skye, I don't think you understand how bad this situation is. And speaking of bad, you need to treat that head injury." Rev replies, and he turns towards the car gesturing for us to follow.

Ky speaks up over the now audible wind, blowing at us as we climb down the dune. "That's one nasty cut for it to make all that blood, what happened? Kop bruised your head with a baton?"

I didn't want to look like a untrustworthy person by explaining the journal issue, but I also didn't want to be completely dishonest. "Oh nothing much, a old friend slashed my head open, after I accidently fell on top of her."

Rev looks surprised, and responds. "Nothing much? Jeeze, that must have been a painful fall for her then."

"Yup, and it was painful for me too, well after I was clawed" I replied.

Ky begins to talk. "Well then, how come you ended up in the sewer trying to find a way outside the walls?"

I stopped walking for a second, I hadn't expected this question. "Uh... Uhm I was just trying to see if I could find her, she bolted as soon as she slashed me, and she apparently jumped through a glass window."

Rev chuckles. "Well, that fall probably embarrassed and scared her through the roof then, must have really been painful."

I avoid eye contact looking to my otherside, before responding "Yea.. I guess it was.."

I almost fall over, realising I just stumbled into the car. Rev starts talking. "Well now that we've reached the buggy, we can get some bandages put on those wounds."

I walk over to the rear of the loosely-built buggy. I immediately notice that a flywheel on the engine is cracked and threaded down to its last bits, and a piston or two setup reversed. I can't help but grin, knowing that I will be able to fix up their cars, have some fun, and maybe show off a little in front of Rev.

Rev starts untying my shirt covering my wound, taking it off slowly to cause the least amount of pain. Once the makeshift bandage is off, he starts soothing the wounds with the palm of his hand, using his fingers to play with the fur on my upper head.

He closes the 3 gash wounds with his fingers, and wraps the new bandage around my head. I start talking after he finishes. "Thank you for fixing up my wound, Rev! You must really know what your doing, medical-wise, I'm already feeling better." I reply with a big grin, trying to get a smile out of him.

His eyes show he took the compliment to heart, and I notice a small blush. "Oh it's nothing, just a little bit of massaging and bandages can fix that." He smiles and starts putting away the bandages.

"Well I appreciate the feeling of your warm furry fingers running through my fur" I could almost feel his fur burn me with redness, and his cheeks became visibly red.

He replies. "Not my fault there's a specific handsome blue wolf nearby, who's.."

"Ok guys that's enough gay-talk around me, someone help me get this thing started." Ky says, taking over the conversation.

I lock eyes with Rev for a moment, before we turn and walk back over to Ky.

After I lookover the car, I realise that the starter has a pretty big hole in the shell, and I find the pivot pin inside the shell is bent. I turn and talk to Rev and Ky, who are already chatting about how the battery is dead. "Hey guys, looks like the pivot pin inside of the starter is bent, and that nasty hole in the casing is letting tons of sand in. Do you guys have a pair of pliers I could borrow?"

They both look surprised, and Rev starts fumbling in the back of the car looking for pliers. Ky responds. "Know' a lot about cars, Skye?"

I shift my feet and look at the ground, kicking the sand I say. "I mean.. Yea I guess so. My dad taught me how to take apart and build cars ever since I could remember, just something I picked up."

Rev walks back over, and replies. "Well that definitely helps us, this buggy has been having issues starting for the past week, and we thought it was the battery."

He hands me the pliers, and I respond. "You can't always be sure, the battery might be making a difference as well."

The pivot pin is reachable without having to take it out, and I rebend the shape to wrap back around the drive pinion.

Securing it in place, I look up to catch Rev staring at my open chest for a second. "That should do it" I say, while handing the pliers back to Rev.

Rev starts up the car first try, and he pushes the gas pedal sending sand flying. We coast away, and pick up speed rapidly.

Ky, hearing our flirtatious conversation earlier gave up the front seat for me. I realise that I wanted to start asking questions about their camp before we got there, but it's too loud over the rattly unprotected engine.

After sifting through what must have been miles of sand and dunes, we reach a very big crater-like dume at least a mile wide and long.

The whole buggy soars over it, landing at the bottom of a steep sand ramp that led to a good 15 foot drop. I almost thought the wheels and suspension would have given out, but that vanished from my mind as I saw 2 wolves, and a red fox staring at me.

One of the wolves looks to be male, and his fur is red with a hint of white on the sides, legs, and muzzle. The other wolf is also a male, and he has dark grey fur with white in the ears, muzzle, and tip of the tail. Both wolves are wearing a basic white/grey shirt, and camo shorts.

Finally, looking at the red fox, it appears to be female, with long red hair going down to the shoulders. The fur colors are all similar to any other red fox, and she is wearing jeans and a cow-girl like red shirt.

Looking around the crater, I notice a large house made mostly out of wood in the center. It was just short enough to not be seen over the crater walls, and had a sheet metal roof. Surrounding the crater wall were small metal shacks, using the shade as a advantage.

As my eyes continued exploring the civilization hidden within this crater-like dune, the female fox starts speaking.

"Rev.. what did we say about flying over the camp wall? You could have killed one of us!" I notice Rev's ears droop, and tail completely drop in the seat.

Rev starts talking sheepishly. "Im sorry Lisa, I was just trying to show a new friend a little fun. I won't be doing it again."

"You better not do it again, and who is this blue wolf you've brought back?" She asks, with a sharp tone.

She sounds quite intimidating, and I think she might be the leader here, which is odd for a pack of wolves to have a female red fox leading. I reply shyishly, like a new student at a elementary school. "I um.. I was just a little lost, I can be out of your hair within a day if you want me to go.."

She cocks her head sideways and glares at Rev. "Nonsense! Anyone we rescue is welcome to stay, as long as they do their fair share of work. Lisa's the name by the way. I kind of control things around here, I've been building this place up for the past 7 years."

I nod along to everything she says, and then I reply. "My names Skye Rufer, but just call me by my first name. I ran into a accident with the Kops back in K - 98, and luckily these 2 pulled me out of the sewers, saving my life, and rescuing me from that horrible slave-camp of a city."

Lisa appears to think for a moment, but the red/white furred wolf starts talking. "My name is Tom, I'm more of the hunter or chef for this pack, I guess... Oh, and this is Fear" He points to the dark-grey furred wolf standing next to him.

Fear pipes up, looking me over. "Don't ask about the name. Either way, nice to meet you Skye." He walks over to the buggy with his paw outstretched. We step out of the buggy, and I shake his paw.

"Nice to meet you too" I reply.

"Well.." Lisa starts talking, "I suppose you need a meal huh? And has Rev already fixed up that injury on your head? He's kind of the go-to person for injuries around here."

"Yup" I reply, watching her walk over to Tom. "Tom, do you think you could cook Skye a prairie dog? He seems like he hasn't eaten in days."

I nod at them, and reply. "I'm just a bit tired from today, running, getting attacked, lost in a sewer, explosions..."

My stomach growls loudly, and all of us burst out laughing. "Ok maybe I'm a bit hungry... I guess the adrenaline is wearing off."

Tom walks over to one of the open shacks, and he starts gathering cooking supplies. "He'll get you a fine meal cooked up within the hour, Skye." Lisa says, while we all watch him.

Ky, Fear, and Rev start walking off to other parts of the camp, while me and Lisa continue to chat.

"Thank you for letting me join your pack, Lisa." My stomach growls again. "And thanks for the meal as well.."

She turns and walks towards the main building, replying. "Oh it's nothing, I couldn't live with myself if I abandoned helpless furs and leave them to die in that desert. Oh, and we need more members anyways. Come along, I want to show you were you will be sleeping."

I nod, and follow her inside the building. "Unfortunately you will have to be sharing a room with Rev for a while, as building new rooms take a while."

I nod, shaking in excitement as we walk up to a particularly ordinary room. Its equipped with a twin-bed, a shelf with some interesting items and weapons, some clothes, and the best thing of all. A sand-colored wolf laying on the bed, grinning at me.

"Oh it's no problem at all, infact I dont think you will have to build another room." I reply eagerly.

"As long as it's fine with Rev.." she says, curious about my attraction to sharing a room with him.

Rev finally speaks. "Oh it's perfectly fine, I have plenty of space to share in here."

And with that confirmation, I run onto the bed, laying down next to Rev. Looking back at Lisa, her eyes seem a little confused, but I can tell she understands.

"Well have fun settling in, your food should be ready soon Skye, just check back out in 30 minutes." Lisa replies, giggling as she closes the door.

After she closes the door, I realise my chest is still bare, and I don't have a shirt on. "Rev, I think I need to borrow a shirt, my old one is ruined in blood."

"I like you better without a shirt" He replies, and I feel a paw wrap around my chest hugging me close. I feel his slow warm breaths on the back of my neck, and I hold his paw with mine, locking it in place around me.

I turn over to face him, staring into his eyes, our faces just a inch away. I press my muzzle against his, giving him a short kiss. He returns the favor, and our tongues explore each other in a romantic, long kiss.

The door bursts open, swinging and hitting the wall making a loud jolt noise. Me and Rev sit up, embarrassingly red.

Ky laughs, and throws me my blood-stained shirt. "You forgot this, might want to borrow one of Revs shirts though..." He leaves and shuts the door quickly.

"I've got a few shirts you could use.." Rev says, still staring at my chest. "Oh, and it appears your still wearing those Kaw pants, I could lend you some pants as well."

My mind is spiraling in a craze, using Rev's pants..? I hope he doesn't wear underwear..

He must have noticed I wasn't responding. He continues talking. "But it's okay if you don't want to use my clothes, I could try helping you make some with this extra burlap."

"No, no, I'll be very glad, I mean fine with using your clothes Rev." I reply, stuttering over my words.

With that, he throws me a green short-sleeve shirt, and some cargo pants. "You can change in here, I don't mind" I hear him say.

Facing away from him, I take a moment to smell his muky-wolf scent on the pants and shirt, before sliding off my own clothes.

I had decided to wear underwear that day, And to be honest I'm not sure if that's unlucky or lucky. As I pull on the shirt, I glance behind me to see him staring at my near-naked body.

I gasp a little, but continue putting on the clothes like normal.

"I think my meal is almost done, and I might be able to do a thing or two to that buggy of yours." I say, looking him in the eyes.

"Oh.. That'd be great if you could get that buggy fixed!" He replies, with a smile on his muzzle.

"It's just a little something to repay you." I say, as he walks towards me.

He goes in for a hug, but I give him a kiss on the lips.

He whispers. "I love you Skye.."

"I love you too, Rev."

We hug and kiss for a little bit longer, before exiting out of our room. He leads the way out of the house, and for the first time I take a look around inside it.

The floor is covered in bright-oak planks, presumably from a forest nearby. The walls are made out of various types of unrecognizable wood, and sometimes scrap. Windows are junk glass, car windows, or old house panes.

I notice 4 other rooms, and a large centre room with a fireplace. Ky and Fear sit on a decent couch in front of the fire, having a argument over what kind of soda is better.

"Pepsi tastes more sweet, and the blue background certainly reminds you of a crispy cool drink." Ky says, with a smirk on his face. Fear responds hastily. "As sweet as it is, by the 4th sip you've had to much sweetness, the taste just changes. As for Coke, the flavor is sweet but at the perfect sweetness. Not too sweet, not too dry. Plus, the more sweet sugar a drink has, the more unhealthy it is."

"Guys, what's the point of arguing over soda if we can't drink anything but water now?" Rev interrupts, clearly angry, yet amused at the pointless argument.

"Guess we were just a little bored..." Ky responds, looking down and playing with his fingers.

Suddenly Ky spikes up, with a wide mischievous grin on his face. "I saw Skyeee and Revvv making out on Rev's bed, kissing and all." He says, dragging out our names and saying it in a sing-songy voice.

Fear laughs. "Oooh are 2 big bad wolves getting naughty in the bedroom?"

Rev interrupts him, brightly red with embarrassment, trying to make up for the embarrassing play-talk. "Well first off, that.. that's none of your business, and second off its our bedroom now, we will be sharing it."

Me and Rev nod reassuringly at each other, and look back at them. Ky responds. "You guys are living in the same room together? Oooh sounds like love.."

We both get even more flustered, and head towards the door. Ignoring their comments pestering us about our new relationship.

Before exiting, we both clear our faces, and share a quick kiss out of view from the living room.

Stepping out the door, we make our way towards the line of shacks, and I follow him. We pass by several different shacks, built for each different need.

Some shacks are large, and one even has what appears to be a smithy in it. While others are small, like a outhouse, or tools shack.

In the distance, I smell cooked meat, and we both start running. Our sandals hitting the soft sand.

Just ahead, I see cooked meat, lined with spices. I instinctively lick my lips, and sit down in a seat. I invite Rev to sit down, patting the chair next to me.

Outside of civilization, we start tearing into the gopher-like "dog" without any utensils. I start wondering why they are called prairie dogs, if they live in tunnels underground. But all thoughts leave my mind as its filled with food. Real food, something that hasn't entered my mouth in a month, besides the bread, cheap meat, and biscuits I had to eat back in K - 98.

At the sensation of real meat, caught outside the walls, and still somewhat fresh, my instincts takeover and I start mauling the meat apart. I look like a wild animal, and I seem to have caught the attention of the cook, and Lisa.

"Well, I guess you really like my food, huh?" Tom says, and I stare at his eyes eagerly, nodding.

I remember Rev is trying to eat some as well, so I apologize and set the gopher back down, leaving the rest to him. Patting my stomach, I lean back and feel the food start to digest.

After Rev finishes cleaning the last bone, he pulls me into a sideways hug, and we relax for a little.

He stands up, and I get a nice view of his behind, before he pushes his chair in. Repeating him, I get up and follow him as we walk towards the buggy.

Just from 30 feet away, I can already see the issues. Not only from the recent 15 foot drop it took, but from the way the engine looks, cluttered together.

"This'll definitely need some work done" I say, looking over the whole vehicle.

"Do you have any tools or parts for vehicles?" I ask, waiting for a response.

He replies. "Yes, we have a small garage-shed on the back of the crater, lets see if it'll start." This time, it took several tries to start. Probably caused by the nasty fall, but things can be fixed. He drives us around the crater, and I wave at Lisa who seems to be working on a gun.

We approach a makeshift wooden garage, tools and random junk parts lined shelves. A beat-up dirt bike leaned against the garage, along with a few gas cans.

"I'm really surprised you guys found Lisa, and built all this." I say, looking over his lovely sand-colored face, lined with odd patterns on the neck, a black muzzle, and black ears.

"Well, to be honest Lisa actually built quite a bit of this before Kaw invaded, she's lived her for 7 years after all. " He replies, as we pull into the garage.

"She already had a few things setup for a doomsday like this, apparently she's heard rumors and even seen a "Secret Laboratory" thats far more hidden than Area 51." He says, scoffing and turning towards me.

"Its hidden within this very desert, according to her. Apparently it's over 2000 feet into the sand, no idea where the entrance would be." He says, while trying to keep a stern expression on his face.

"Whatever this laboratory is, Im glad there is one, because she wouldn't have built this place if she didn't have a reason, huh?" I ask, looking back into his eyes.

He replies. "She can be manipulated easily, especially if you give her evidence. Which is what concerns me.. But I doubt there's a hidden lab 2000 feet under sand." He says one final time, before leaning in.

We share another passionate kiss, before stepping out of the buggy.

"Well for starters.." I say, looking down at the rusty and now skewed suspension. "These springs are on the verge of collapse, it appears their rubber coat has worn off leading them prone to rust." I see him reach out and touch one of the springs, its rust layer slightly crumbles like dust. "And after your little stunt, they are especially weak. You don't suppose you have any other springs, do you?"

He nods his head up and down slowly, his hand still touching the spring.

"Well? Where are they?" I ask. "They should be on the bottom shelf over there" He points at a nearby shelf.

Within minutes, I find a decent looking set of springs that could work for this sandy environment. Despite being a bit old, and having a bit of damage, they will do.

Lifting the buggy up on a makeshift jack, I disassemble each wheel one by one, unscrewing and removing the springs. Rev watches as I work, and asks questions.

Screwing in the last wheel and suspension, I remove the jack, and breathe a sigh of relief as the buggy stands on all wheels perfectly stable.

"That'll do for the wheels, but now the engine.." I walk over to the engine block, things are a little messy but only a small amount of work needs to be done.

"Oh this isn't bad, this will only take 30 minutes. This is your buggy right, did you build this yourself Rev?" I ask, looking around the decent chassis.

"Yes.. I did, but not to take all the credit, Ky helped with welding the frame." He replies to my question, and I think for a moment. "Well for only having a month to build it, you did well." I say, wondering how he got power for a welder. Looking up at his face to see a grin appear. "Thank you, Skye, It seems you really do know a lot about cars."

Ignoring his compliment, I begin removing a cracked piston, and replacing it with a new one. From there I re-do a few wires, and check for a leak on the battery.

"That should do it" I say, standing back and admiring the buggy.

"It's a fine buggy" I say to Rev, and he gives me a quick hug as a response.

"Dinner is ready!" A voice yells, and a loud dinner bell rings out.

"Welp, looks like it's time to go eat some gopher" He says, with a grin. "Is this all you guys eat?" I reply, being a little bit worried. "No, not usually, we have some forests nearby filled with prey. But recently a patch of prairie dog tunnels started forming near us, and removing them from our land came with a benefit."

"A tasty one" I respond.

"Come on handsome, lets go get some meat before there's none left!" He turns and and gestures me to follow.

"If there's none left, I'll let you taste some of mine, as long as I can have some of yours." I say with a wink.

His hands start feeling up my body, and I shudder at the contact. I return the gesture, and move my hands slowly up his body, before pulling him into another long kiss.

To be continued...
