Chapter 1

Everyone had always said that if an alien race were to invade Earth, we would be able to combat it. The world is lined with supersonic jets, brave soldiers, deadly weapons, and excellent leaders. Not only that, but we have NASA. NASA has our furry backs afterall, they were able to cut a asteroid the size of Hawaii into pieces using a laser before it hit Earth a year ago.

Of course, not everything people say is true. You shouldn't always assume a rumor is true, as most of the time it isn't. The same can be said about what anyone says. Just because NASA once stated there is no extraterrestrial life for hundreds of light years, does not mean its true.

Afterall, today officially marks one month, one month of planet Earth and all its inhabitants being taken over and enslaved by Kaw.

I finally set down my pencil, and rest my wrist on the table. Taking a moment to gather my thoughts and rethink my life. Soon after I hear soft thuds coming down the hallway, I quickly grab my notebook, and hide it under my bed sheets. Looking up at the door, I hope he didn't see me hide my journal.

A husky, lean and well built with a grey fur coat, and a black suit with red markings stands just before the doorway. The husky opens his mouth and starts speaking, almost robotically. "K59J, you should be at your workstation downstairs, you were expected 15 minutes ago."

I groan, running my hand along the smooth wood bed frame as I look back at him . "I apologize sir, I will be down in less than 5 minutes."

He stands for a few more seconds, as if thinking of a response, before he nods in agreement and shuts my door.

I rollover onto my bed, laying into a pillow headfirst, and close my eyes. I begin to think of a time before I was forced to work, before Earth was invaded.

I could see myself sitting at my old desk, one I would spend hours at each day after school. I was endlessly typing away at some program, it was for a mechanical robot of sorts, if I remember right. I could see my eyes shining a bright blue, showing happiness yet at the same time concentration. My fur is a brilliant dark blue, with a white belly and muzzle. The edges of my ears, tip of my tail, and snout are all bright blue. My head has long ruffled fur, and a good 3 foot long tail. My arms are decently built, with a fair amount of bicep. My legs equipped for running, with more white fur on my inner legs.

I could hear my mother calling in the distance, "Skyee! Dinner is ready, come and get it while it's hot."

I quickly finish up the last variable, and make sure to save my work. After pushing in my chair, I sat up and walked out of my room.

I could see myself walking through the halls of my old house, seeing the leather couch and feeling the comfortable carpet. I stop at the front door for a second, so I could give my dad a hug before he set off for work.

We exchange the words we used to say almost everyday to each other. "Love you dad! See you after work." He hugs me, before responding "Bye son, hope you have a good day at school!"

I would give anything to be able to talk to my dad again, I always looked up to him. He wouldn't let a single person get in his or his sons way, he was strong and had a fierce, understanding personality that was booming with kindness and feelings for all. I was always so proud of my dad, looking up to him. He made me so proud, and he was proud of his son too.

My dad started to teach me how to use computers and work on cars when I could just remember. As a young cub, my face would light up, eyes widening, and muzzle dropping, when he took me to my first Fightbot's arena. My eyes wouldn't ever leave the mechanical death pit, flames spewing out of some bots, blades launching others in the air. When I was only in the 4th grade, I beat the whole school district for being the fastest typer. I remember feeling a smile spread across my muzzle as the principal walked into the computer lab, rewarding and congratulating me. I scored a average of 90 WPM, and it was all thanks to a amazing dad.

I started rebuilding vehicles by the time I turned 13, and was already putting together a car for when I turned 16. I learned how cars worked, how they reacted, and started turning junkers for a profit. With my knowledge of mechanical engineering and computer programming, I managed to bypass security doors at my school, and showed off to my friends. This was a skill that could come in handy later, when I make my grand escape.

I remember walking into the dining room, and I hugged my mom while thanking her for breakfast.

As I sat down to eat, I remember looking at the bacon and eggs thinking another normal breakfast. My mouth started to water rethinking the memory. Where I lived currently, in K - 98, food was usually biscuits, bread, or some poor quality meat from a unlucky feral animal. I remembered myself scooping up the bacon, letting the warm, tasty smells invade my nostrils. I bit down... on something soft?

I snap out of my daydream, realizing I had taken a bite out of my pillow. I start laughing, embarrassed of myself, and realize that I have not had anything to eat yet, and this was gonna be a hard day since I had missed breakfast.

I glance at my alarm clock, and my eyes go wide remembering the warning from the husky, and remembering how I was expected downstairs in less than 3 minutes. I throw on a "work uniform" as Kaw called it, and sprinted over to my shoes.

Running out the door, I grab a small snack from my hidden food stash. Sometimes while in the cafe, I grab or bring a snack back with me, for mornings like this. I practically inhaled the snack in my mouth in one bite, and jog down the steps, skipping 2 steps at a time.

I make my way to the bottom in record time, scanning over the familiar and unfamiliar faces. I notice Klarissa, the golden-furred feline, her pelt shining almost too brightly in the light. I start making my way over to her desk, so that I could sign in for my daily duties.

As I near, she looks up at me, and waits staring at my torso while I put a sentence together. "Morning Klarissa, I'm just here to check in, hope I'm not too late, I had some writing to do"

The felines eyebrows shift curiously, and she opens her mouth to speak, before sighing. "You know Skye, the more you come in late, the more curious Kops will be about what your hiding"

A small gasp is emitted from my muzzle, how did she know that I was hiding something? I was able to salvage a laptop from some abandoned plaza while sneaking out one night, and I had it hidden in my wall, notes and maps for my escape filled a considerable amount of the desktop. Was it really that obvious for people to read me like that? Or had she seen me using the laptop..? Apparently Klarissa had noticed my gasp, or it was the fact I hadn't said anything to her for the past 10 seconds. She let out a small chuckle, "I think it's very cute when your ears flinch and cheeks go red when you get caught, Skye."

I can't help but blush under my fur, I let out a nervous laugh, and respond. "Klarissa I hope you remembered that I am gay, but your compliment flatters me."

I could feel my cheeks burning even more intensely, and I thought I heard her mutter something under her breath.

My cheeks start to burn redder than the sun, and she must have noticed giggling. "Klarissa, do you think you could just sign me in? Im already running late as is"

She picks up her pen, "Yes, yes just give me a minute to write it down."

After scribbling for no more than a minute, she hands me a slip of paper, and sets her pen down. "I'll cya at lunch Skye"

I wave a goodbye, and start walking down the main hall, following the signs as I head to my workstation.

I walk over to my desk in the back, and sit down, getting to work with the scraps of metal and wire. Once the Kops had realized my engineering skill, due to a small vehicle incident last week, they decided that it would be best for me to create electronic key cards scanners, and anything else they requested.

This worked out perfectly for me, as it could very much help with my escape plan. I had already made myself a key card, as well as a backup. With the materials and software I was provided, I assumed that they used these key cards throughout K - 98, the city I am forced to live in. With this knowledge, I used the laptop I salvaged to write a simple code-cracker, and implemented it onto my key card.

This key card could crack any scanner, it would test a series of numbers rapidly until it found the right code. The way key cards usually work, is that a scanner must pick up a code in the air, it's usually set with a random series of numbers it looks for, and if the key card dispenses that exact series of numbers, it will unlock. Because K - 98 used this old method, I was able to easily create a cracker card.

By the time I setup the 7th scanner that day, I heard a Kop ordering me and others to lunch. The instant I heard the word lunch, my stomach was already growling. Standing up from my desk, I made my way to the cafe.

As I chose a plump turkey leg, I walked over to my usual spot, and sat down. I ate the turkey like I hadn't eaten in months. After my third bite, I notice Klarissa fast-walking in my direction, a look of fear in her eyes. I start worrying, noticing she isn't holding a tray, and is making a beeline right at me.

She sits down in the seat next to me, glaring into my eyes with a worried look. She starts whispering, "Skye, your in danger! A patrol of Kops is headed towards your room. Just a minute ago I heard them talking about your room, and then they just went up the stairs"

My heart sinks deeper than ever before, almost as deep as when I had my freedom stripped from me. I am so unbelievably worried and shocked, I almost don't believe her. "Are you sure? Were they really talking about me?"

"Yes! I first heard them mention your code, K59J, but my ears couldn't help but pick up them saying Skye" She takes a deep breath, "I didn't hear the conversation that well, but I heard it had something to do with a journal."

Skye audibly gasps, eyes widening with fear. He was so attached to releasing his thoughts in that journal, he forgot to be safe about it. Written inside that journal includes some info about the laptop he salvaged, and his secret trips out at night.

The feline continues talking, noticing his gasp. "Skye, do you have a journal in your room? You told me this morning you had some "writing" to do." With a worried look overtaking my face, I quickly respond, "Yes Klarissa, I have a hidden journal in my room, but I don't have much time to explain" I take a deep breath, "Klarissa, inside that journal is illegal information, including plans to escape."

Klarissa looks at me with a serious face, her eyes asking me to continue. I take another deep breath, "This was stupid of me to do, and I can't believe I overlooked it. Klarrisa, I have written about some things you have done for me, in a diary log within the journal. What I have written includes illegal things you did for me, like the time you snuck outside with me to steal extra food."

A slow hiss comes out of her mouth, as her claws start to extend. But before she can speak, I cut her off. "Klarissa, I am very sorry for writing about you so stupidly like I did, but we really don't have time to talk this over or argue, it won't be long before some Kops will be after us both, and we both could be severely punished, for the things I have written."

Her eyes show a slight amount of fear in them, but her claws do not retract, instead they extend to their full length. She no longer whispers, and lashes out at me full-blown screaming. "YOU IDIOT! HOW COULD YOU MAKE SUCH A STUPID MISTAKE?"

I feel as though my stomach was punched a thousand times at once, my heart is empty and dull. It beats without a purpose, I just ruined a cat's life, reputation, and the friendship I spent the last month building. And we only have so much time before the Kops come back, I try calming her down with no effect.

She lets out another shrill filled scream, "YOU HAVE RUINED MY LIFE!"

Suddenly my face is whipped into another direction, redness bubbles in front of my eyes. Moving my head back into position, I notice her claws are dripping blood, my blood.

The whole lunchroom stops eating, watching the scene unfold. Tears roll down my eyes, and onto my muzzle. Suddenly I look up, to see her being held down by a racoon and another wolf. Tears start forming at her eyes, and bystanders start asking what I did, some feeling sympathy, others not. The wolf looks at me, cocking his head and nodding feeling my pain.

I feel like the worst wolf on the planet, I burrow my head into my furry arms soaking my fur. However I knew I didn't have long before the Kops came back, I wiped my tears and ran in the direction of the back doors. Luckily no one gave chase or tried stopping me.

Working with the IT Department had its perks, especially since the IT system running K - 98 is so outdated. I knew that the back doors would trip the security guard if opened, but it wasn't that hard to disarm.

I smash open the small alarm cover using my hand, and from here it's pretty simple stuff. I time myself and yank out both battery cables at the same time, positive and negative. At best it doesn't even trip the alarm for a second, but at worst the security guard might hear a short beep. With the door now safe to exit through, I make my way into the back alley.

Suddenly the sound of glass smashing makes me turn around instantly. Klarissa runs the other way, with 3 Kops chasing her. She, and the Kops hardly even notice me. I can't help but form another tear as I hear her rage.

It seems that she could make a fairly good distraction, I hear sirens in the background and a voice sounding through a speaker. My heart beats only pain, as I remember my only friend hates me now, and that I have no one. Every beat a shiver of pain runs through my whole body, and I picture her, earlier this morning. She was happier than most days, with her kitty pelt shining in the sunlight, delighted to see me.

But just 2 minutes ago, she cut open my face. Not very delighted to see me at all. I notice a sewer grate nearby that doesn't have cement covering it, something I had only seen one other time in K - 98. My face lights up brightly, I have a solid chance of escaping, if I used the sewer to navigate under the city, eventually I could find a drainpipe going out to a flood-well or such. If I search long enough, maybe I could find a pipe exiting on the other side of the wall?

I hastily lift the grimy sewer gate, wiping my dirty paws on the curb. I slowly descend, looking around to make sure no one is looking. Down the ladder I go, taking one step at a time, rehearsing it to myself to calm down. I slide the gate back over my head, and start walking down the tunnels.

Unfortunately for the dark, I am a wolf. Wolves are able to see in the dark quite well, not as good as a cat, but I could see a good 10 feet in front of me in the dark sewer. Using this to my advantage, I started to make a mental map of the sewers as I ventured through it. Each turn and dead end I recorded mentally. Occasionally I saw light, just to be led to another sewer gate without cement.

After several hours, the pain started to roll in. I had my shirt off and was using it as a makeshift bandage. Hunger, boredom, and sadness all start taking effects as well. I had found a few flood-wells, but they were within the city. One was just feet from the border wall, but not close enough. I layed down to rest, leaning against a ladder, and wincing from the pain of my wounds.

My emotions from earlier in the day start flooding back to me, how I ruined a cat's life by being a idiot, how I was embarrassed at lunch, and how I also ruined my life. I started to sob uncontrollably, my ears flattened down so much they touched my head. I instinctively howled a deep, sad and painful howl. Tears streamed down my muzzle, dripping onto the concrete below. My tail lay still, lying on the ground below motionless.

Suddenly, I heard another howl echoing through the tunnels. My eyes widen, tears still streaking, but my sad mind decides it was just an echo. This makes me sob more, until I heard another howl, this time longer and more high pitched, as if it were trying to gain my attention.

My tears stop, my last bit of hope glimmers in my eyes. I respond with a howl of distress, notifying the other wolf I am lost, and in trouble. I hear another howl, and I recognize it saying I should follow. My whole life turns around right in front of me, my ears perk up, and my tail starts wagging side by side. I hear howl after howl every 15 seconds, as I trace it through the tunnels.

The howl was now as loud as a whistle, and I was in a unfamiliar part of the sewer I had not mapped out. I heard soft murmurs above, and I realized it was someone talking. A younger male voice spoke. "This is hopeless Rev, we haven't heard a howl back for minutes, it's probably just a patrol of Kops trying to track us down."

A male, who I presume to be Rev speaks in a tone slightly deeper than the other wolf, I can only guess he is around the same age as me. "You heard that wolf howl! It was a distress signal, and all the howls sounded like it came from the same wolf"

I notice a pipe with a small shimmer of light sneaking through it, this must be how I could hear them. I put my muzzle up to it, "That wolf is me!" I could hear them flinch, and they both let out a small gasp.

I hear Rev speak, "Are you a Kop? What are you doing in those sewers" he sounds anxious.

I put my muzzle back up to the pipe, "No, I am just another slave having to work for Kaw, I need help, I'm wanted by Kops. Do you know a way to get on the other side of the walls?"

A faint chuckle is heard from the other side, and Rev speaks. "Your already outside the walls! In fact, your a good 50 yards from them."

A large smile takes over my entire face, I felt like my mouth stretched wider than ever before. "Im.. Im outside the walls? I did it! I escaped!" They could hear me celebrating, as they let out a chuckled sigh.

The other younger wolf speaks, "Your not the only one who has escaped! Me, Rev, and several others have been living out in this desert for the past 3 weeks"

Rev steps in, "Okay, before we start talking we need to introduce ourselves. My name is Reveri Kin, but you can call me Rev. And this is my friend, Kyler Sticking, but he prefers to be called Ky."

I take in the names, and process them to see if I recognize them at all. Noticing I had not spoken yet, I introduce myself. "My name is Skye Rufer, but just call me by my first name. It's a pleasure to meet you Rev and Ky."

Both Wolves wait a second, before answering. "It's nice to meet you too Skye. But I'm afraid we don't have much time." Rev continues, "Kaw has noticed the outlaws, like us, living in the desert, and they are progressively seeking us out. Just 20 minutes ago we spotted orb ships zooming across the desert, we had to bury ourselves into the sand."

Ky takes over the conversation, "Not only that, but they aren't here to capture outlaws. All they do is shoot at anyone outside of the compound until they die. Because of this, we are risking it way to far being this close to the border. We came this way to check for any more escapists, and I guess your the last one."

I breathe a sigh of relief, knowing they would help me escape. "How are you guys gonna get me out of the sewer? I haven't seen any exits outside the wall for the past 4 hours."

I hear something being pulled out of fabric, Rev replies "Simple, brace yourself Skye."

*BOOM*

Sand fills my eyes, and I can not see anymore. It infiltrates my lungs, and I have to cough choking this sand back out. Blindness tells me a much larger opening has been forged, and indeed it has. Stepping through the smoke, I find a large hole blasted in the sewer, it was still charred and smoldering. I spot 2 wolves ushering me out, it seemed they wanted me to go urgently.

The first wolf is all black, with bits of gray inside the ears, at the tip of the tail. He is slightly shorter than the other wolf, and is wearing sweatpants, as well as a short sleeve shirt covered in sand. His eyes are a light green, and he appears to be Ky.

The second wolf is holding some sort of pistol with red Kaw markings on it, the rounds look like miniature bombs. He is most definitely Rev, and his fur is a beautiful sand colored desert, black runs up half his tail, it covers his snout and nuzzle, as well as ears. Black stripes and odd patterns run near his neck, and appear to run down his belly. His eyes are a beautiful crimson red, one that I can not stop staring into.

I finally realize Rev's hand is outstretched at me. "Are you ok Skye?" I hear him repeat it but I can not respond. I finally snap out of it, realizing he caught me staring. A deep blush runs up under my fur, and I can not help but feel a stiffening somewhere in my body. "Yes, sorry I was just looking at your pistol, its interesting." I gladly grab his hand and take my time getting out, trying to hold onto it as long as possible.

Once out, I take my time admiring his body, its curves and delicately placed fur draws my eyes onto it at all times. I can't help but notice Rev looking at my chest, when he spots me looking at his eyes, he quickly looks at my bandaged wound. Eventually both of them look at me, and Rev says "Skye we don't have much time, the explosion was definitely heard by some Kaw guards. We will have to take off into a sprint, I have a vehicle parked not too far from here, with some bandages for that injury on your head." I look between the two wolves, and Ky nods.

They gesture me to follow, and we all take off in a sprint towards the desert.

To be continued...
