Chapter Six: 'playtime'
Sam was sitting in the cafeteria on deck 12, he was reading a science book he got from his tutor. It was calm in the cafeteria, other than him there were 5 other furs and the caretaker for this cafeteria. Sam was of the 'junior' military-science team, together with 5 others they worked with the other military scientists to research and invent more military equipment. He was a male black cat, 21 years of age. He was reading about plasma-physics when someone tapped his shoulder. Sam looked around "oh hey there Ivan, nice to see you again!" Sam said surprised. Ivan was a Russian male husky and was with the 'junior' combat-engineering team. "Hi Sam, haven't seen you this week, been busy?" He said, Sam nodded. "Yeah, I'm learning much here, I have been put in the weapons development department, couldn't be cooler!" Sam answered. "Great! Oh did you hear, the 'junior' troopers are in the holo again today? I'm curious if they do it better than last time, it was fun to participate in that holo-battle wasn't it?" Ivan said, all the 'junior' teams had been in that holo-battle, only the troopers and the medics had really been shocked, the science and the engineering team thought that it was the coolest game they ever played. Of course that was after they overcame the mental shock. "I'm curious if it is possible to hold fighting tournaments in there, now that would be fun!" He continued. Sam nodded, he already had plans to test out newly developed weapons in there when he was ready for it.
"Would you like something to drink by the way? I'm going to get some" Ivan asked. "Sure, I'd like a coke please" Sam answered. Ivan walked to the bar and ordered the drinks. Sam put his book back in his pack, when Ivan came back he smiled at him. It was nice to know some younger furs on a ship. "here you go" "thanks" They were silent for a moment while drinking. "Did you see all those nice girls in the other Junior teams? I thought I saw a husky and a black cat to!" Ivan said enthusiastic, Sam was silent for a moment, he always tried to avoid these kind of conversations. "yeah I saw them to" was all he could manage to say. "Ah..." Ivan said looking confused. There was a silence and Sam was sipping his drink while Ivan played with his dog-tag. "So uhm, have any plans for this weekend?" Ivan managed to ask. "Nope, not yet. I don't know what to do yet, might go to that bar they have on this ship." Sam answered, he emptied his glass and sighted. "Well, we could go to the club, we might meet some more of the younger furs there" Ivan said, he looked to Sam with a curious look. "Yeah sure, I'd like that. Hope they have some good music we can dance on" Sam answered with a smile, Ivan smiled to "yeah, I'm actually curious to what kind of music they would play. In the engineering area they always play metal or rock and stuff." Ivan said with a grin. Sam looked surprised "They do? We don't even play music, we all need to concentrate like hell" Ivan nodded," Tachis and his combat-engineers are die-hard metal fans. I even heard that Faukx listens to metal! Can you imagine that?" Sam looked even more surprised. "The captain listens to metal, that would be funny" He said, Ivan nodded in agreement. "Say, would you like to come with your team to our barrack this evening? We sort of hacked our way into our own computer system and hooked up some old game-consoles, were going to play some old-school Mario Smash Brothers Games." Ivan said with a huge toothy grin, Sam showed his own fangs in a big grin. "Like? I love those games! I'll PM the others to meet us at the barrack area hall, then you can lead us to your teams barrack." Sam said enthusiastic, he took out his message pad and began typing. "Cool! I'll PM my team to let them know they get some more munchies" Ivan said, he too began to type. "Say Ivan, I'll go and change some clothes, these lab coats are cool but I don't want to spend the evening in them." "Sure thing, see you at dinner" Ivan answered.
After diner Ivan led Sam and his group to the junior combat-engineers barrack, where they were warmly welcomed by them. "Okay cool! Shall we play team against team?" Ivan proposed, "We can do that? I thought max players were four." Sam said. The junior engineers smiled. "Well, our resident geek Affra..." Ivan pointed to a female hyena who was wearing cyber goggles, she held up her paw and smiled. "...can hack her way into almost every kind of system, or game for that matter. So she kind of hooked up a few consoles together, max players do not exist in her world" Ivan laughed. She got a round of applause from everyone, female geeks and engineers quickly got popular with the guy's. "Thank you! Love you all! Now, you can use those two consoles and we use these" She pointed out two consoles for Sam's team and two for her own.
They started playing the game, there was much laughter and chaos. "Can't remember the time I had this much fun!" Sam laughed after the first few rounds. The rest wholeheartedly agreed, the chips and coke got attacked by the group hungrily and after a small brake they began to play again. This time the guy's played against the girl's, this got even more laughter, mostly from the girls who totally kicked tail. After this the girls huddled together in the other end of the barrack and started speaking in hushed tones, this got the guy's confused. "What do you think they talk about?" One of them asked the rest. "I don't know, what do girls talk about anyway. I think they just need a moment to be... you know, eh... female?" Ivan said doubtingly, sometimes he just did not understand females. He did however understand Affra, but that was mostly because she liked to talk with him about machinery and computers.
After a few awkward minutes the group of laughing girls walked back to the group of guy's. The guy's were staring at the girls expectantly like they were going to do a trick, and the girls were looked at each other with a strange smile on their faces. Affra stepped forward and crossed her arm, "Well boy's, we girls had a little talk. We have seen you boys gawk at us for the past week and we got quite popular in your book. Now we have decided that you are going to play against each other, the winner will get a little kiss from his favourite tech or lab girl. So... how does that sound to you?"
The guy's were staring at the girls, they did not expect this to happen. They looked at each other and started to smile, Sam on the other hand did not exactly know what to say on this. "That is the best thing I heard this evening! Well, let's do it boy's!" Ivan said enthusiastic. The guy's didn't waste a second and grabbed a controller, Sam just played along like he was as desperate as the rest. After a few games the girls started to bet who was going to win and the set up a tournament roster. Sam and Ivan both won their first and battle, Ivan also won his second battle, the loser had to take it up against Sam. Sam won this battle and so Sam and Ivan were in the finals. Ivan won, but what he didn't know was that Sam didn't really try in the last battle. The guy's didn't notice, but the girls did. "So, congratulations mister Yevdokia. And did you already have in someone in mind?" Affra asked, the other girls giggled. The girls, especially those from the engineers, all had a weak spot for Ivan. He was good looking, he was strong, and he knew how to get things done. "I don't know why you would even ask" He said with a grin, he just starred at Affra. Affra walked up to him and kissed him on his snout. The rest of the furs clapped for them, Ivan and Affra smiled and gave each other a big hug.
After this the group got themselves comfortable with some more munchies and drinks, they stopped playing games this evening and talked about their first week on the ship. They had huddled together and got cosy, Affra was laying in Ivan's arms eating chips and feeding Ivan some to. Sam was lying on his belly with his head in his hands, a female lynx was lying next to him in the same way he did. She sometimes glanced at him with an odd smile, he just smiled back but tried to keep it friendly. Some other furs were lying or sitting very close to each other and one other duo was feeding each other chips. When it was nearing midnight they all said their goodbye's. "We have to do this every week!" Said Affra happily, Ivan was still hugging her. "Agreed, we could try more games!" Sam said, he really had enjoyed this evening.A male Labrador from the Science group raised his hand. "I'm going home this weekend to pick up some more stuff, I could bring my role-play books with me. I know it's a big group but we could figure something out." "Great idea! We could also go clubbing with our groups this weekend, that would be awesome!" Ivan offered, the groups nodded and smiled in agreement. They all shook paws and got some hugs here and there. "I'll see you tomorrow at lunch Sam" Ivan said to him when they gave each other a hug. "That's okay, see you tomorrow then" He answered, and he took off with the rest of his group.
On the way to their barrack they talked about the amazing evening they had, at their barracks they quickly got ready and crawled into their own beds. Some of them were still whispering and snickering about a joke someone made. Sam was thinking about all the new people he had met, all of them were so nice. He didn't regret that he had chosen to come to this ship.
