The last of both - Unconsciousness

As I walk down the lightly beaten path of a densely wooded forest I was totally aware of several wolves that are following me. These wolves were different from all the wolves I've met in my life, they kept themselves out of sight and a good distance away from me, they were a little different from me being that they were smaller, they acted a little differently and had not seemed to have noticed that I knew that they were following me.

I found this a little odd in that most wolves of the bipedal form that I have ever encountered or come across their temples knew of how to manipulate one of the four great elements, but these didn't show any sign of using any of them. So as I continued walking along and took greater interest in these small wolves.

I could sense they were a mix of males and females of varying ages and that they were dressed in normal clothing (loin cloths for the males and loin cloths and fabrics/leather to cover their breasts for the females) and that they carried small daggers and swords, but I could not tell much else about them because I was using my feet to feel the vibrations of their movements on the ground and in the trees.

Now before I go on any more I should tell you a little more about me, my name is Michael, I am a little chubby with blond hair and blue eyes and as far as I know I am the last of both of my kind, I am 20 years old and lost both of my families due to being different and hated by people that did not understand us, and there for they feared us. As I have said I am a wolf but not a normal wolf, I am a werewolf, now I know what you are thinking that werewolves are evil and cruel beasts, but that isn't true for most of my kind. Yes there have been the odd few which have tarnished the name of my species forever but as a whole we are not like that, quiet the opposite really.

I do not go around in my werewolf form but instead my human form, as it has a habit of scaring people which usually ends up in me having to get out of the area rather quickly. I do not wish to hurt or upset anyone so that is why I refrain from using that form. I travel from one place to another looking for any signs of my people human and werewolf alike trying to find any information about them and to help my training of the elements but all I have found is old ruins and bones

Now you should know that both the human and werewolf species on this small world have seemed to have vanished because of one reason or another, mainly persecution and fear from others, and as far as I could tell both humans and werewolves lived quite happily together, with the odd exception of course, but they seem to get along. They would help and teach each other in their daily lives from food too training, but the main thing that connected them was the ability to control and manipulate the four elements.

Some humans and werewolves alike were born with the ability to use one elements but I was born with the ability to use all four (don't ask me why or how because that is what I have been asking myself for a long time!), but because there were no longer any of my people around I have to move around looking for any sign of where my people have been and try to learn what I can about them and how to use the elements.

My mother and father where both human and they were able to use water, so when I reached the age of five they started to teach me the basics of how to use it. I did it find hard and a little frustrating at first but I managed it, by the time I was ten I was able to do a LOT more, but when it came to my twelfth birthday my mother and father told me that I was able to use the other elements. This confused me no end, but they said that they were very proud of me and that they would take me to other places to find people to teach me.

Now my little family lived on the side of a great river in the middle of nowhere so that meant that we did not know what was going on in the outside world, as we move around looking for others like me and my mother and father, but all we met and saw new where strange people but no one like us (human) there where canines, cats, horses, etc but all walked like us and spoke in tongue, most would look at us with confused eyes and clouded minds, some would be very nice and normal while others would stare and ignore us.

Now my mother was highly skilled with water but most of all she was a highly skilled at healing everything from minor wounds (mainly on me) to broken bones to severe life threatening wounds. So to earn some money to be able to buy food and other things we needed she would heal people for a very small fee and it was this that would draw a lot of attention to us, some good but mostly bad in that they would avoid us and say that we were evil, but again we managed.

It was when we came to a large village that things became very bad, in that we would get death threats and things thrown at us.

We stayed on the outside of the village that night as we always did, we had our dinner, talked and went to sleep. I was awoken by the sound of shouting and the glow of fire to see that my mother and father where trying to talk to a large group of men which was mainly made up if bulls and canines and they looked very unhappy.

Both my mother and father trying to talk to keep them calm and trying to pacify them, but their voices only grew louder as they attempted there utmost best to remain calm until one of the men struck out at my father with a sword at which time he fell to the ground holding his head. I then saw my mother rushing down to his side whilst collecting some water around her hand to try and heal him.

When group of men saw this they went into hysterics and another of the group struck my mother with a large club, through all of this I had remained in my bed and had not been noticed by any of the men but when they hit my mother I screamed and tried to get to where my parents had fell. As I ran the short distance I saw my mother turn towards me and shouted for me to run, to run for my life. Upon hearing her voice I stopped dead in my tracks, only a few feet from them.

Upon hearing me scream for my mother the men looked at me as I had run towards them almost as if they had never seen a child, it took them moment to realize what I was and for the voices to rise again. As I stood there looking at the two people I had known and loved all my life in a small pile on the ground holding one another and telling me to run over and over but all I could do was stand there as small tears began to form in my young eyes, until I heard my mother scream my name telling me to run for my life "MICHAEL RUN!".

The sound of my mother's screaming plea snapped out of my stupor and realized what my mother was saying. At this point the men were starting to move towards me raising their weapons. As I heard my mother scream at me I turned and ran past where I had been sleeping only just moments ago and past the small fire that I had helped my father build and out into the dark of cold of the night, I heard the men coming after me shouting, but I just ran and ran even when I could no longer hear the men shouting or running after me.

I just ran from them and from what I had just witnessed with my young eyes, until I fell from sadness, stress, and fatigue but most of all from losing the only things that mattered to me in my young life. I don't know how long I was out for but it had to have been at least 12 hours or more as the sun was high in the sky but all I could do was curl into a small ball and cry. Again I don't know how long I had been crying but the time went by and the events and sounds of the previous night replayed in my small and fragile mind.

As the day turned to night and as my mind was starting to except what had happened and now that I was all alone in this cruel and unforgiving world, I drifted off into sleep that was as dreamless as my hopes.

Well know you know a little about me and how I came to be walking down this path but I had changed in more ways than one since that hate filled night. I was strong both mentally and physically and most of all I had been able to find out more information about my people and how they used the elements granting me the control and use of fire and earth as well as a stronger control over water. I still needed to learn about air though, and I was hoping that the direction I was headed would lead me to a place where I could learn.

I carried on my back and sides the weapons which I use to survive, but also in the use of defence when needed. I tried to limit the amount of people that saw me using the elements because I had learnt the hard way some people with think ill of you if you do something that is not normal.

I carried in hand a wooden bow staff of which I had made and shaped myself, I also carried two long broad swords on my back with the handles jutting out from my right shoulder for easy access. I had a set of five throwing knives on the outside of each of my thighs that had been originally for someone so very close and precious to me. Both the swords and the knives had been made by me over the years as my training and skill increased in both the elements and weaponry as they were made by combining and using earth and fire techniques to make the swords and knives which were safely kept and stored in the leather sheaths and holders that I had made for them out of a stags hide.

I wore thick grey but lose fitting trousers made from soft hair and cotton and a sleeveless green shirt made from the same material as the trousers. I had managed to buy these and a few other items of clothing with the very little money I had but I did what I could to live and to get by. I also had a small bag in which I kept some food and other important items one being so very precious and valuable to me that I would risk my life to keep it safe.

On my right arm just above my wrist was a neatly wrapped bandage that covered the bite mark of where I had been bitten by a werewolf which I was so very proud and shy of but that is a story for another time.

As I walked along the path I sensed that the group that had been flowing me had gotten a little closer and I could tell that there where at least 5 wolves flowing me, as I continued walking the number of wolves started to increase until there was 8, all in different locations and the closest one was only about 10 feet away. By this time I was getting a little worried because they were not acting like any of the robbers or thieves I had encountered before on my travels, they were being patient and that they were in too big of a group for me to handle on my own with out using my abilities or changing form.

So I came to the decision that I should tell them that I knew that they were there and that I meant no harm to them, so I stopped walking. "Okay I know that you have been following me for about an hour and I am getting a little tired of it. I don't wish you or your friends any harm" I called out.

I could tell that they were shocked by this in that I could sense some of them start to tense their muscles and their heart rate get a little faster. One of the bushes to my right rustled as one of the bigger wolves that was hiding started to move and come out. He was a light but well muscled wolf with a green loin cloth that had a long dagger on each hip, this wolf had a dark grey coat with light cream chest fur that went from his chin to below his loin cloth with a hint of brown in around his arms and face.

"Who and what are you, and what are you doing in our territory?" he asked while putting is hands on his hips just above his daggers staring at me. Trying to intimidate me but it didn't work, which made him a little angry.

"My name is Michael and I am, as far as I know, the of the last humans in this world. I am here in this area looking for any signs of my people be it living or not and once again I mean no harm to you or your friends" I said while giving a small bow to the wolf as I placed my bow staff on the ground to prove this, all the while keeping my eyes locked to his as I assumed that he was in charge of this group.

"Be that as it may I have not heard of a 'human' nor have I heard of your people, Kenu, Taloo restrain him!"

Now I did not expect to be having to defend myself so soon as two furry blurs were coming towards me from 2 and 10 o'clock with a dagger in each of their right hands, I quickly spin crouching down and move back to avoid them from catching me, they stopped either side of where I had been standing with their daggers raised and ready to be used. I did a quick series of jabs on both of them in the abdomen and then on the right side of the chest causing their muscles to spasm in their right arms. I then knocked their daggers into the air and finally using my palms in the middle of their chests to push them away from me and to the ground.

Upon seeing this, the male wolf called for another of his group to restrain me, this one, a female, ran towards me with a large dagger from my 6 o'clock and boy she was fast. I had to move back two feet just so that I would stay in one peace. On her second try at getting me she swung her dagger at my head, I in turn leaned back to avoid the sharp blade. As the blade moved past my head I used my left hand to grab her wrist and twist it so that her whole body moved in a manner that allowed me to disarm her safely. I then used my right hand to jab just above her shoulder blade forcing her to release her dagger and using my left hand to bring her arm down behind her back and pushing her away from me.

Now I had 3 wolves looking at me from the ground in which they had landed in total disbelief of what I had done. The larger wolf drawing his daggers having seen all of this he called for the others. Now I had 5 unhappy wolves with their weapons surrounding me and 3 very unhappy wolves getting up off the group where I had put them. the only thought that went through my mind was "oh, shit someone is going to get hurt"

As they moved around slowly, I tried to be as passive and non-threatening as I could and try to figure out what to do.

During all of this I had not noticed a big black wolf watching from one of the trees, as they were about to make their move I heard an almighty "STOP".

Upon hearing this, the wolves all stopped and moved away a little, the big wolf calmly moved towards me from where he had been leaning against the tree, seeing how the other wolves reacted I guessed that he was their packs alpha. I straightened up a little but I was still in a position in where I could defend myself. He stopped about six feet from me carefully looking me over. Even though I have not been in this world for long I knew first hand how alphas should be treated by members and non-members of the pack.

So when he stood and looked at me I showed respect but no weakness, as I wanted him to see me as an equal, but I let him make the first move.

"My name is Nate, I am alpha of the Razor Paw pack, why are hear in my territory, why did you attack my pack mates, and why are you not with your family young one" he inquired.

"My name is Michael, it is a pleasure to meat you" I gave him a small bow to show my respect as he is an alpha "I am here looking for any trace of my people. I did not attack your pack mates, I was merely defending myself and I did not provoke them in anyway and I think you would find that none of them are injured and ......" I let out a soft but painful sigh thinking about my next words. "...... I do not have any family to be with they all died some time ago" I said, though answering that last question was hard for me because I had only just lost my pack 8 months ago.

Nate looked at the wolves that had tried to restrain me to see if they were injured or not. They quickly looked themselves over and with a slight look of shock that they had indeed not been injured. Seeing this had seemed to have convinced their alpha that I was merely protecting myself.

"How did you do that without using any of your weapons? And what happened to your family?" he asked as he looked me over with much more detail than before.

"I simply used techniques that affect the body without causing any serious harm, for example if I put pressure on the nerves in a certain way I can cause the muscles to relax or spasm." I needed to take a deep breath as the memories where old but the pain and suffering where still so very fresh and raw.

"My mother and father were killed just before I turned 13 because they were different" I said as a single tear fell from my right eye. I left out the fact that my werewolf family had been killed also due that same fact as that might just make the situation a little uncomfortable.

"I am sorry to hear that and I apologize for the behaviour of my pack mates" the last statement seemed to aggravate one or two of the other wolves.

"Don't worry about it, I completely understand and I know that they only had the best intentions at heart" I said as I bent down and picked up the daggers that I had knocked to the ground and held them out to Nate whilst holding the blades so he could take the handles.

"I believe that these belong to your friends AAGH!" I had just finished speaking when I felt a cold stabbing pain in my right side under my ribs, quickly followed by a hard metallic thud to the back of my skull causing me to be enveloped by the cold darkness of unconsciousness.

I woke up some time later to the searing pain in my side and to the back of my head as the sun was just setting or rising, I couldn't tell. I had woken in a soft and warm environment which I found to be a humongous bed that was made of fine silks and other materials that where all a deep dark blue colour.

I let out sigh and winced as the air left my lunges and the pain increased in my side. I brought my hands up to my face rubbing my eyes trying to force them open and moving to the back of my head where I could feel a noticeable lump that had not been there before and wincing again as I touched it.

I tried to sit up but found it too painful. So I slowly and painfully rolled onto my left side, and slowly looked around. I pulled back the fabric's that there covering my body; I found that my shirt was missing to be replaced by a tightly bound bandage that covered the area that was causing me so much pain. After seeing that I was grateful to realize that I still had my trousers on and that whoever had bandage me at least let me keep what remained of my dignity.

I look around the room I was in to see if I could find any water to heal my wound. Upon sighting a bowl of water on a small table about 4 feet away from me, which I assumed was used to clean my wound. I stretched out my right arm, wincing a few times as my muscles moved around and pulled at the area which was causing such pain, and focusing on pulling the water to my hand.

It took a little more effort than normal but I managed to get enough water to wrap around my hand to heal myself, bringing my hand and the water to hover over the area that was causing me so much pain.

I move some of my fingers so that I could manipulate the water to cut through the bandages, as the bandages where cut a sudden flood of pain enveloped my abdomen and chest causing me to cry out as the pressure was lifted from the area. As the pain faded I moved my hand to cover the area of the wound.

My mother was able to use water to heal my father, herself and me as I grow up with them for the short time we had together. As I started to learn how to control water she made a point to teach me how to heal and it took a great deal of concentration and energy to heal even the smallest of injuries and it took me a long time to even do that, but as I have grown so has my strength and control. I have healed myself countless times from small to major injures over the past seven years.

I concentrated on moving the water around and through the wound which caused me considerable amount of pain but it was necessary to stop any infection and to clean it, I then concentrated on releasing my energy into and around the wound connecting and healing the muscles, nerves and other tissues.

It took a couple minutes to heal the wound completely and as I finished I pulled the water away and pushed it back into the small bowl on the table and then collapsed back against the bed as the pain slowly ebbed away.

After catching my breath and regaining some energy I slowly sat up in the bed, while being very mindful of my aching head, looking around the room from left to right slowly taking in where I was and thinking of how I might have gotten there.

To my left was a large window with a balcony overlooking the surrounding area, there are also small and large wooden boxes and chests up against the far wall. My eyes drifted around the nicely decorated room until my they fell upon something in the far corner of the room that I had been dreading for a long time.

I stared into the eyes of Nate, the black wolf that I had only seen when I was last conscious. He looked at me with a confused and shocked expression on his strong masculine face. Thoughts started to go through my mind, had he seen me heal myself? Why is he here with me? What is going to happen to me? What's he going to do with me? As these thoughts flooded my mind panic began to set in.

I began to try to think of a way to get out the room, then I remembered the window to my left and that Nate was on the other side of the room. I looked from Nate to the window and back seeing if I could make it. He could see what I was planning to do and started to come towards me to stop what I was doing. This only me panic even more.

I quickly moved to the edge of the bed while keeping my eyes on him, I put my feet on the ground with my hands still on the bed and quickly turned to run for the window.

As I moved to the window my head started to thump and pound as the room started to spin violently, I stumbled and fell over the small table with the bowl of water knocking it the floor. I staggered about but stumbled again and fell unable to catch myself striking my already concussed and painful head on the cold stone floor causing me to be enveloped by the grip of darkness once again.
