Her Spitting Image

I just finished this story the other day about a pair of dino characters I have. A Dilophosaurus named Avantika and an Acheroraptor named Panini <3 please enjoy, I'm super happy with how this came out.

I awoke to the feeling of being carried. I couldn't move, but when I opened my eyes, I could see the blurry men that carried me. One of them noticed and tightened a muzzle they'd put on me. His hand was cold, yet still warmer than the cold interior of the hall that surrounded us. My body ached and when I tried to move my head, the man holding me by the top half wouldn't let me, keeping me held tightly. I couldn't even spread my frills and I began to fill with panic.

Eventually, they set me down and removed the strappings they had on me and removed the muzzle. By the time I was able to stand, they were gone and I was alone. When looking around this new place, I could see it was one of the pins they use to study us. When I was walking through, reacquainting myself with the area, I saw myself in the reflection of the window. My flank was scratched up, my tail bitten, and when I spread my frills, I could see that they were both ripped. Even my face and arms were scratched up. The sight made me feel as though I should only hide away.

Later in the day, I was lying curled up, my tail over my eyes so I wasn't able to see myself anymore. I heard the door open and hissed without lifting my head to see who it was. Despite the hissing, footsteps came closer until they stopped beside me. When I looked up, I saw one of the men in the white coats and started to stand, hissing louder, frills splaying as I got ready to spit. My threat went ignored, though, and he only started to push my head down with my jaw shut so I couldn't get back up to spit at him.

He muttered under his breath and began to muzzle me again as I growled. His hands froze on my scales as I tried to get up, but he was stronger than I expected. He glared down at me as he examined my wounds. My tail slapped at the ground as I eventually accepted him looking me over, realizing there wouldn't be a way to get away before he was done. He eventually unmuzzled me and walked out. I stayed down until he got out, then began to sit up, looking toward the door.

After looking at the door for a few minutes, I finally stood and began to wander around the pin again and dug a small hole before settling down in it. This was the closest to my nest as I could get, and I had no clue when I would be allowed back into my normal home. Eventually, I heard the door open and I hissed when I saw the men come back. I started to stand as I spread my frills, but couldn't move away. The only thing that came to my mind was standing my ground in hopes of scaring them off.

Of course, they weren't afraid. Of course, they weren't. The men cornered me, muzzling me again. I knew they would do this, and even though I did, I also knew they wouldn't let me go any sooner if I fought it. My tail still swayed and lashed behind me as I tried to share my displeasure with them as they muzzled me and shoved me to the ground so I couldn't move again. The only thing I could move was my tail, and that wouldn't stop them. I continued silently growling as they started putting this weird stuff on me. While I listened to them, they called it 'ointment', though I never understood the word.

One of them whispered to me, "It will be fine, Avantika. It'll help you get better sooner."

Even though I did believe him, I continued growling, continuing to show my displeasure in the situation. It wasn't a situation I wanted to be in, no matter how desirable it was compared to the alternative. The men eventually got to my tail, holding it down so they could put the stuff they called 'ointment' on it. I hissed silently as a man I hadn't realized was behind me grabbed my injured frill and started to cover it in some different stuff, which hurt a lot. The pain was so much I felt like screeching, even though my muzzle was covered and I couldn't. I wondered when it would end before suddenly, I felt a pain in my flank again. Everything went fuzzy again before I felt myself becoming heavy and I blacked out.

When I woke back up, I still felt heavy, but I no longer had the muzzle on and I wasn't being held down anymore. When I finally got enough strength back to lift my head, I heard a voice and dazedly looked toward the source.

"Hello there! Welcome, welcome! My name's Panini! Oh!! You must be here to be my friend, and I already know we're gonna be bestest of friends!!"

What stood there was a weird looking dark blue feathery creature with orange stripes down her sides and neck as well as an orange saddle-looking marking on her back. Her eyes were really pretty red, but one of them looked foggy.

I tilted my head and spoke, my throat burning as though I'd tried to eat the glowing orange stuff I had seen humans carry around before, "Wh..Where am I? What's going on?.."

The thing that called herself Panini chirped at me with a wide grin on her face as she got closer, inspecting me, tail wagging, and as it wagged, I realized it was partially cut off, "Well, this is a special needs pin, so you must need some special treatment or something! Don't worry, I won't hurt you, what's your name? Oh, wow, you're so pretty, you got such a pretty frill, so colorful!!"

I started getting up, becoming unsettled by how friendly she was, but didn't back up. "Well..my name's Avantika...what are you?..and..thanks I guess.."

She chirped again as she nodded, "Oh, I'm what the humans call an Acheroraptor! You must be a dilophosaurus, I can tell from your frill!"

I tensed up slightly as I hissed, becoming nervous again about this, 'Acheroraptor's' knowledge at what I am, confused about how she knew and backed up slightly. She looked at me, concerned, though she craned her neck to do so with her, as I assume, good eye. She got closer, "Are you ok? They didn't shake you up too bad, did they? I know you're new and all, but you must know they aren't out to hurt us."

I just stared with uncertainty at her, my eyes narrowed. I didn't answer her statements or questions. She seemed to understand my unease, as she then started to slightly lower herself. "I won't hurt ya, promise. I just want a friend, and you're the first one to come here in a long time."

After what felt like an eternity, I started to relax, but began to slowly stalk about, not completely convinced, but speaking up with my burning throat, "Did they bring me here cause of my wounds?"

Panini thought a moment, then chirped, "Well, it must be something else, cause they don't just bring any injured one here! Maybe...Oh, you must be the one that spits this really stinky stuff instead of the painful stuff..."

Her crest lowered as I continued staring at her. She seemed to understand immediately as I lowered my head. She soon got a sad look on her face as she lowered her head and almost seemed to sob out, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel bad. Honestly, I thought maybe you'd be here at some point, but I hoped not, but when I heard them talking about your injuries while they took care of me a couple of days ago, I realized you would be here."

When she spoke this time, I sighed silently and whispered silently, "I don't want to be here.."

She nodded silently, crest still low, seemingly regretful, though she eventually stood back up and walked a little closer, gently nuzzling me. I tensed up, letting out a small, surprisingly pathetic and frightened noise as I felt her nuzzling up to my throat. While I stayed stiff with concern, she made sure to remain gentle. She eventually lulled me into this odd sense of something. I don't know what I felt, but it wasn't fear anymore. I think it was a pleasant feeling, like one that I hadn't felt for myself in a long time, if at all.

Eventually, she stopped and spoke again, "You look kinda familiar, like this really pretty one I used to see in here. She only stopped coming in a few years ago and I heard she died and it was really really sad but she apparently died protecting her kid."

I could feel pain in my heart as I became completely still for some time. Eventually, I started trembling, and if I could, I'd have been crying. No, not crying, sobbing. When I spoke again, my voice trembled and tail curled up around me. "I...th-that was...my mom.."

She flinched as I said this and looked up at me. "Oh..um..oh my, I'm so sorry, Avantika..I didn't mean to.."

I just shook my head and stood, trying to get away as soon as I could, hiding my face, unable to speak further without the distrust in myself to not just break from the pain that I felt in my heart. She simply moved away, letting me head off to hide. When I was in hiding, I heard a door opening again, followed by footsteps toward where Panini was and a voice speaking to her. Soon, I realized the voice was that of the man who had tried to calm me before. "Hey there, girl. Where's Avantika at?"

I lifted my head at the mention of my name as I then heard Panini chirping sadly at him, "I made her sad and now she's hiding cause I upset her."

I peeked out from my hiding spot and could see him standing and looking around. Soon, he started heading toward me as he squinted. When I stood to back up, I tripped over my own two feet, and fell back. He heard this, and I slightly trembled with fear as he came closer, moving the leaves from view. When I could see his face, I started to feel oddly as though he wouldn't hurt me. It almost felt as though I would be safe. He had light blue-grey eyes, and short black hair.

He spoke in a surprisingly calm voice still, "Hey there, don't worry. You'll be fine here. Ya ain't gonna be moved around anymore, you'll be fine."

I slowly got a bit closer, looking at him with narrowed eyes and a confused look on my face. He put his hand in a sack around his waist and pulled out a good smelling fuzzy looking thing. When he set it down, it stayed still and he nudged it closer before backing up. I looked down at it and sniffed before starting to pick it up in my teeth, glaring cautiously at him before I tossed it up in the air and snapped my jaws shut around it, swallowing it quickly.

This action seemed to please him, as he smiled at me. Something about the smile made me feel even more emotions that weren't unpleasant to have. I tilted my head lightly at him and got a bit closer, then backed up quickly, hissing, realizing that he was a human, and remembering the huge amount of pain they caused me the last time. My damaged frills came out as I continued to hiss, afraid, wanting him to leave me alone.

I suddenly heard Panini squawking as she dashed over, getting between me and the human. She stared at me, fearfully squawking at me, "Don't hurt him! He isn't gonna hurt you, he isn't like other humans, promise! He is a good human, he takes good care of us!"

I stared, stunned, at the acheroraptor before me that protected this human. She seemed to actually care about him and I only hissed at her too, "He's a human. Humans cause pain! That's all they've caused me!"

She shook her head, whimpering slightly, "No, no, you don't understand. He is good! I promise you, if he wanted to cause either of us pain, he would have already!"

I growled louder at him, tail lashing behind me, "Then what happened to your tail?! That isn't natural!!"

Panini lowered her head lightly, this seeming to make her very upset. "I-it happened 'cause of my cataract..they couldn't keep the tip of it on me cause it'd get me killed..." She almost seemed to be near to tears, at least she would have been if she could cry.

I lowered my head, shamefully, and looked away, putting my frill away, and lowering myself slightly. "I apologize..I am so sorry...I didn't realize that."

The acheroraptor just looked between me and the human man before heading off, seeming to have become rather depressed from what I'd said. My regret just began overwhelming me as I looked up at the human again. The man looked at me, no longer smiling, now scowling unhappily. He seemed uncertain, and upset that this didn't go as planned.

After a little while, I started to lay back down, regretful and tail wrapped around me. It felt like a long time before he came back, carrying two weird things. One of the weird things looked like this weird thing with something that smelled really good in it. The other thing was something squeaky. I eventually started to come out of hiding and walked up to him, still cautious, but being a lot nicer when I did. I then saw Panini coming out as well, looking as though she'd just slept for a long time. When she saw me, she seemed upset again, her crest low, but she didn't leave.

The man, once both of us were out of hiding, brought up the squeaky thing and started to squeak it and wave it around. My gaze followed it, but I didn't make a move other than tensing up. Panini, on the other hand, quickly perked up as she very eagerly followed the sight of the thing, tail wagging as she shifted from foot to foot excitedly. When he finally tossed the toy to the side, she pounced on it and took it quickly to a corner to squeak it as much as she possibly could.

He finally came back up to me and set the other thing down next to me. He began to speak to me, as if I could reply. "I know this is hard, Avantika. It's a big change, but you'll get used to it. We can't have you in that habitat anymore. We don't want you getting ganged up again."

As I listened, I slowly reached for the yummy smelling thing, trying to get to whatever made it smell so good. I eventually started to understand that this was going to be my new home. A permanent home. I understood that I would probably never see the dilophosauruses that hurt me again. Most importantly, I'd know that I'd be more safe here than I ever was before.

He seemed to realize this understanding as he lightly nodded. The man then stood up, starting to leave. He looked back at me and I spoke, despite knowing he wouldn't actually understand what I said, "Thank you..."

He soon just left the pin. I couldn't stop thinking about what he said or how he said it. My body was slightly stiff still as I continued trying to get at the good smelling stuff in the toy, finally getting a taste as I crushed the thing in my mouth. I bit down hard as the taste egged me on.

I soon heard the sound of the squeaking stop followed by the sound of the acheroraptor walking over to me, no longer extremely upset, but now starting to lay down near me. I lifted my head to look up at her before she lowered her own. I just stayed there in the silence, then laid my head down, lightly nudging the good tasting thing away from me and toward her, trying to make her know that I regretted the upset I caused. She looked back at me and very gently set down her squeaky thing and nudged it back to me in return.

Soon, we were both with traded things, before she whispered in a chirp, "I hope you like the squeaky toy as much as you like the treat toy. It's very fun."

I smiled as I tilted my head. "Is that what it's called? A..'toy'?"

She nodded quickly as she smiled brightly. "Yeah! Toys are really fun! The one that Blake gave me is my favorite! So squeaky! And the treat toy, I'm sure, is a really good one you'll end up liking!"

I couldn't help myself and just chuckled as she shared her excitement with me. She took this moment and happily tried to nuzzle up to me. By this point, I finally understood that she longed for physical contact, and decided to just let her. I figured it wouldn't be any harm to, as I laid my head down, finding this physical contact much more pleasurable than I was used to. I fell asleep, lulled into an odd sense that I think the humans called security.
