Violet in love....A Gray Muzzle Story

Haeos was a writer. By night, he wrote of dragons, of shape shifters, of epic battles. By day, he wrote for a living. Stuff he could sell to magazine editors. For years, he had been fascinated by hybrids. Haeos decided that there could be commercial interest in a piece about the hybrids.

The hybrid story goes back to the mid 1960's. Researchers in genetics began working on gene splicing. The original intent was human organ regeneration, but early studies took many directions. In some experiments, dog genes were used. Dogs, after all, were readily available, and cheap. In a strange twist of fate, the scientists found that it was possible to create a human-canine mutation. As far as human organs, the study was a dead end. But knowledge, once acquired, needs a place to go. Armed with the ability, there were numerous projects devoted to creating these creatures. Much of the work centered in Japan. With great public interest, and little regulation, Japan became the home to the dog hybrid industry. Given the Japanese love of Poodles, it should come as no surprise that many of these were Poodle hybrids. A large number, if not most, found homes in the U.S., before importation was banned in the 1980's. Years of legal battles followed. Smart and capable, the hybrids were gifted with human emotion and intelligence. Yet, they were treated as pets. As time passed, there was a movement to give the hybrids human rights. It took many years, but not too many years ago, they achieved that goal. Not that they didn't face prejudice. There were many who scorned the newcomers, and others who sought to exploit them.

Haeos drove the mountain road to it's very end. Where the road ended, there was a beautiful estate home. He pulled to the door, and walked up the wide steps. Haeos rang the bell and waited. Soon, the huge twin door swung wide.

"You must be Haeos. Welcome to Peteena's House, Haeos. I'm Marcia."

Marcia offered her hand. It really was a hand, although it had some paw like qualities. Marcia was a hybrid. A tall striking Poodle, with a shock of platinum blonde hair, she looked more model than housemother.

"You look like you could be a model." Haeos observed

"Why, thank you. I was, at least before I retired, and went into design."

Marcia lead me through the house, to the rear patio. It was a lovely warm day, and Haeos was happy to be outside.

"I hope you don't mind being outside. It's so lovely, it seems a waste to stay in."

"No, it's very nice" he agreed

"Can I get you something before we begin?"

"Tea might be nice, if it's not too much trouble."

"Not at all; I was planning on getting coffee anyway."

Marcia left for the kitchen, her full skirt swirling in her wake. Alone, Haeos got up to survey the grounds.

Set atop a mountain, Peteena's House was imposing. A stone mansion with a view that went for miles, it was a residence to be admired. Walking around the patio, Haeos saw many hybrids. Some worked, some were clearly at play, others just seemed to be wandering around. It was then that Marcia returned. She set their cups on a wire table between them.

"I was surprised that you are a hybrid, too." Marcia observed

"Not a hybrid, technically." Haeos corrected "I'm genetically mixed. But, in the minds of most, we're the same."

Marcia nodded

"At least you understand how it's been."

"Tell me, Marcia, how did Peteena's House come to be?"

Marcia smiled.

"It's an interesting story. The house belonged to Marvin Haverstraw. Haverstraw was one of the nations wealthiest men. His fortune was made in genetic engineering in the 60's 70's and 80's. When he passed away, there was a provision in his will to create to create this home. The house itself was Mr. Haverstraw's personal residence. He left it to us...for the girls...."

"The girls?" Haeos asked, taking notes

"Girls. Everyone here is a female Poodle hybrid. Genetically, we all were born female. You familiar with Tortoiseshell cats? They're all female. Same with us. For whatever reason, when you hybridize Poodle, the offspring are all born female. "

"So, all the residents are female?" Haeos inquired.

"Yes. All the girls are Poodle hybrids. In all, there are forty residents of Peteena's House.

"Why Peteena's House?"

"Haverstraw was involved in genetics. Late in life, he became convinced that the human/animal experiments were very wrong, and he felt responsible for his role. So, he set up a foundation , so that there would be a place for these beautiful creatures to live out their lives....."

Marcia swept her hand, pointing toward all the Happy, contended hybrids on the grounds.

"Why 'Peteena's House?" Haeos repeated

"The name? It came from a notorious case. A Poodle hybrid named only 'Peteena' was raped and killed in a viscious mob attack. Her death shocked the nation, and help spur the movement that resulted in hybrids getting their full human rights. So, when we set this lovely home up, we made it a tribute to our sister in spirit 'Peteena', who died, so that her sisters could live decent, humane lives."

Haeos scanned the property. The Poodle hybrid girls all looked healthy and happy.

" Why do they need to be here, though.? They look normal. Why not live in society?"

Marcia's face got serious.

"What you see is the end result. The girls come here with varying degrees of disability that kept them from living independently. Some have suffered massive abuse. Others' not so much. With love, support and therapy, and the company of their own, most will leave normal, happy lives."

"So, will they ever leave?"

"Some do." Marcia replied "Others decide to spend their lives here. It's their choice. We consider this our 'forever home'. It's a very pleasant place. All needs are attended to. There's really no need to rejoin the outside world."

Marcia and Haeos talked for a while. Then, Marcia offered to introduce him to some of the girls. Haeos sat down with maybe half a dozen girls. Each told their story. Each told about the life that brought them to the house, and how Peteena's House changed their lives. Once he had done the interviews, Marcia and Haeos lingered in the late afternoon sun talking. Haeos paused by the patio rail. Hearing the sound of laughter down below, Haeos looked to see a hot tub. In the water were two human blondes, cavorting with a Poodle hybrid. This Poodle, however, was not like the others. While the other girls were very feminine, this one wasn't. She was muscular, and seemed very strong. She wore not a female swimsuit, but men's board shorts, and a jacket, open to expose her bare chest. And there was her hair. She had a long brush cut, in the brightest shade of purple you could imagine.

"Who's that?" Haeos asked, pointing down below.

"That's Violet." Marcia replied without explanation.

"May I speak to her?" Haeos asked

Marcia looked troubled

"I've introduced you to a number of the girls. Wonderful, inspiring stories. Stories that touch the heart. But....not every story comes out quite that way. Violet....continues to have 'issues'. "

Marcia slumped, looking very sad.

"Still, I'd like to meet her...."

Marcia sighed

"As you wish. Violet?" Marcia called from the rail "Would you join us, please?"

Moments later, Violet walked up from below. She was medium height, but very sturdy. Haeos found himself staring at her bare chest, as her small boyish breasts were fully in view.

"Violet, this is Haeos. He's a writer. He'd like to speak with you."

Haeos looked up to find that Violet was looking straight into his eyes. They stood there like that, eye to eye, like two wolves, sizing each other up.

"Mind if I dress first?"

"Not at all".

Haeos sat down again with Marcia. They made small talk, but Haeos mind was a million miles away. Or, at least upstairs. Haeos waited impatiently, until Violet returned. Violet wore camo cargo pants. These were extremely low cut. They were bells, long enough so you could just see the toes of her bare feet. She wore a camo combat jacket, open. Underneath was a pink tank leotard. The pants rode so low, you could see Violet's bare hips. Her nipples showed through the tight fabric. She flopped in a chair.

"Mind if I smoke?"

Before Marcia could object, Violet pulled a cigarette case out of her waistband. Opening the case, she pulled out a short, unfiltered cigarette, and tapped it on the table. She hung it from her muzzle, and lit it in a single motion. She took a long inhale, exhaling it slowly.....

"Maybe we could walk" Haeos suggested

Violet nodded....She stood, and began to walk. Haeos followed, catching up to her.

"I hear you have a story."

'As if anyone gives a shit....'

"I might."

Violet stopped and looked again into Haeos eyes....

"Well, you asked....."

So, they walked and talked. Violet, it seems had had quite a life.....

"I was born in Japan. My mother was a famous showdog. When some mutt bred to her, she was 'damaged goods' . She was sold to the laboratory. When I came along, it was decided that I wasn't 'cute' enough. I ended up getting shipped to Alaska. I was put out with the dogs. I was this little Poodle girl, and I was in Alaska, living with dogs!"

Violet lit a second cigarette off the first, and continued..

"But, I learned. I fought for my place at the foodbowl. For a place to sleep. They didn't put me in the sled hitch, but I ran with the sleds. I became strong. I could run twenty miles in the freezing cold, and fall asleep on the floor. But that wasn't the worst of it...

There was one time when the master did treat me as human. I was still a pup, when the master took me inside. It was cold, so I welcomed it. He......."

Violet stopped. She couldn't continue. She sat down on the lovely grass of the great lawn. There were tears running down both cheeks. When she looked over, Haeos was beside her. He was crying, too. Violet smiled.

"Hey, didn't mean to bring you down. At least there's something interesting for you article, anyway."

"That's not for the article."

Haeos touched her chin, and brushed Violet's tears. A smile came to Violet's muzzle. They stayed, just like that, a long time. Then, Violet leaned forward and kissed him.

"What was that for?" He asked.

"Dunno. You're sweet. You didn't judge me. You act like you care....."

After a time ,they got up. Violet took Haeo's hand and they walked, not speaking. From time to time, she would bump him a little. Then Haeos would bump her back. They kept this up for quite some time, until they had walked all over the property. Violet was holding hands, swinging her arms, looking down, when she spoke:

"Uh, maybe you could stay, and have dinner with us...."
