NOTE: As my story progresses, I do plan on adding a little bit of...umm....action to it. I just might make two different versions, one clean, and one....you know. On another note, I know that the ranks in the story are probably off, so please if you are from the Army and such, please let me know if a Sergeant takes orders from a Lieutenant, and so on. This is my first time doing ANYTHING army wise, so please no flaming? ^^

Life of a Soldier: Chapter 1

He was alone. His team had disappeared on him. No idea where they were, the battle had been so intense. All of the bullets, the blood spilling. He still remembers the event in his head, his aching head. The minute he tried to move however, he felt pain burn through his left shoulder. He looked at it and balled up his right fist. He could barely feel the muscles in his arm, and he knew that his nerves wouldn't last much longer. He would lose his arm. He had to keep the nerves alive. Like the fool he was, he took his balled up fist and brought it down onto his shoulder wound. As if he had been shot again, he howled into the moonlit sky. At that very moment, his ears perked. He got a reply howl, and it sounded like...

"She's alive... She's still alive..." At that moment, he knew, he knew that his team was still in the area; his team was still alive. The howls were getting closer, and it was more than one. 7 of them to be exact, and that made him smile. 7 different howls meant that his entire crew was well. Had they been looking for him this entire time? Despite the pain, he raised to his feet, taking quick breaths to keep himself steady. He heard the bushes being pushed aside, and he took one step. The pain took him over again, and he fell forward... And right into her arms.

"Neku... Oh God, are you alright?" She asked him with her soft tone. "I've been through worse, Sergeant, a lot worse." He slowly regained his balance and they looked at each other for a hard minute. "Glad to hear it, soldier!" She said, this time with a deeper tone. He smiled and nodded. "Hey, it's your fault. If you hadn't a trained me the way you did-" He was hushed by a finger. "Don't push it foxy boy." He nodded quickly. "How did you guys know that I wasn't dead?" He asked. One of the other soldiers said, "Simple, we didn't know you were alive. You saved yourself, dog." Neku blinked. "I'm not a dog, I'm a fox. You are a dog, Joey." The dog huffed. "Whatever, we got the data, so let's go home... please." Neku looked at Joey and grinned. "Why such a rush to get home, puppy? Master told you to be in before the lights go out?" Joey growled.

"No... my 'master' said that I have a big juicy steak and bone waiting on me when I get home. And for our information, foxy boy, Alice is NOT my master; she is my mate. I've never had a master, and you've never had a mate." Neku stayed silent for a moment. "Umhum, now next time you will keep your tongue to your darn self." Era looked at Neku and noticed the look on his face. She grinned at Joey and quickly said, "Well, if she isn't your master, than I am because I am your sergeant. Now... when we get back to base, you owe me exactly 100 push-ups, no stopping!"

Joey's eyes got a little big, and Neku's face quickly grew a smile. "Let's move out, all of us. We've done enough for today... anyone wounded other than Neku?" There were no movements made. "Good, walk." Everyone turned and walked in the direction of their plane. Neku was about to go with them, until Era put a paw on his shoulder. He turned to look into her hazel eyes, and realized he was staring at the most beautiful vixen he's ever seen, again. "Soldier, you're staring at me, for the 1000th time." Neku blinked for a moment before turning away, blushing.

"My apologies, Sergeant Era, but I must say thank you for coming back for me." She smiled at him and rubbed his shoulder. "You are quite welcome, but like Joey said, you saved yourself. Yes it is my fault that I've trained you so well, but that is because I knew that you would be one of the greatest soldiers that I've ever trained... ever." Neku looked at her again, and she could only smile. "You did well today, lots of blood I've seen. Keep it up, and you'll be a better person than I could ever imagine you to be. Possibly even better than me."

He shook his head. "Oh no Sergeant, I don't think I could ever do that. Be better than you? That's nothing but a dream!" All he did was make her giggle, and he loved that he was even able to do that. Just then he heard several barks and whistles. "Getting down with the Sergeant, eh foxy boy?" Neku was about to turn around to say something, but the look on her face told him to stay silent. "That's another 100 push-ups, Joey. As a matter of fact, how about you add me a good set of 100 eight-body-builders?" If Era hadn't been looking so mean at that moment, Neku could've sworn that he would die laughing. "I want everyone to move out, on the double! Hop to it!" And just as quickly as she said it, her soldiers did, all except for Neku, who stayed by her side the entire time.

Meanwhile....

A tiger was walking back and forth. "Damnit, where the hell are they?!" The animal watching the tiger, a lioness, was sitting there, her tail wrapped around her waist. "General, like I told you before , they'll be here any minute now." The tiger only stopped for a moment, flicking his ears. Then he started pacing again. The lioness sighed. "You know, sitting down might help you with your nerves, General." He turned to stare at her before his ears flicked again. "Ahh... they're finally here. Took that damn vixen long enough!" He stormed out of his office, the lioness following.

"Be ready for a uproar, people, General Stripes is about to go off..." Era said calmly. Neku blinked. "How do you know?" He asked her. Just then, a loud roar went off in the building, causing the fans above them to shake a bit. "ERRRRRRAAAAA!!" She gulped. Neku stood next to her. "Where the hell have you been!?" We need that damn data and you know it!" Era's ears went down against her skull. "We were making sure we had the data for you, General. We also lost track of one of our comrades." Stripes got in her face and yelled, "And who was it!?" Neku stumbled to say something, and instantly Stripes looked at him.

"You? You were the M.I.A in this mission?" Neku stayed silent but he nodded. "Why you little-" "It wasn't his fault!" Both Stripes and Neku looked at Era. "What?" They both asked simultaneously. She closed her eyes and said, "It was my fault that he got lost. I commanded him to go in a different direction." There was silence for a moment before Stripes backed away from Neku's face. "The data, Era." He said, his paw out. She gave it to him and he simply walked away. Neku looked at her. "What was that for?" She looked at him. What he saw made him cringe. For the first time, he saw tears coming down her cheeks. "Are you ok?" He asked. She only looked him in the eyes before walking away. Neku watched as she disappeared down a hall. "Damn... General Stripes brought Sergeant down, hard. Joey said. Neku didn't reply, for his own tears came.

((I know that the chapters are quite small, but this is as best as I can do... hope it isn't too disappointing.))
