Pets...

what is a pet?..

To me it is just a name...

Just another way of saying friend...

A friend who just happens to be an animal...

It is a name not to be taken lightly...

I would know...

I was one once...

It all started one day when I was walking through the woods. At the time I was in the form of a human bard. Not my favorite of forms but it made the towns people more comfortable. I had just finished some work in the local tavern and was just enjoying the fresh air and sounds of the forest. I was told not to come out here because of the werewolf that was in the woods, but I was not defenseless. I have bested knights and monsters across the world. A mere Lycan was nothing before my skill. I thought of how sad it was that one should be hunted by what was once his own kind. At least the wolf had its own advantages. It was fast and dexterous enough to escape the humans most of the time.

It is then when I noted that I was tired from my tales and walk, and I wanted to have energy left for my tales that evening. So the idea hit me because of what I had just been thinking about. Wolves have the stamina to run for hours. If I shifted into a wolf I could get back and still have energy for my telling. So that's what I did...

I shifted into a anthromorphic wolf. My legs became digigrated, and my skin grew grey fur. My mouth pushed into a muzzle and a tail sprouted from my spine. I went at a jog for quite some time on my return to the town when I was stopped. Three men came from the town to get me and make sure I was safe, but seeing me as a wolf it appeared to them I was the werewolf that they hunted. I had not realized my mistake until now, and I was paying for it.

I ran, for I could not hurt people who only were trying to protect what they loved. I ran on all fours as the men trampled behind me yelling and trying to string their bows as they ran.

I suppose I could have shifted into a bird to escape but then what would they do if they saw their werewolf shift into a hawk? I could not risk having the town run mad because of my actions.

I ran thinking as I went on how to evade these humans, and I didn't see the drop of terrain. I fell off yelping, causing the hunters to look at each other in confusion. As I fell I shifted into an armadillo as a on-the-spot reaction. I rolled up and rolled down the hill and getting dizzy until I suddenly stopped by hitting a rock... with my head, and blacked out.

When I awoke I remember smelling the wood. Pine it was that I smelled. I opened my eyes to find I was on a pillow in a house, and that smell was the floor that was made of the pine that the wood held. Next to the pillow I was on was a bowl of water and some berries. I hefted my armored body, feeling a little dizzy, and went to the water first, drinking my fill. After that I took a look around. It was a plain room. The house itself seemed to be made all out of woods from the forest and did not seemed to be well crafted, causing me to think this was not the house of someone in town or of great wealth. In the room there wasn't much. A small bed, a mirror and a dresser and a foot chest in front of the bed. There was only one window and it had bars on it. Was I to be a prisoner?

I heard footsteps just outside the door so I ran underneath the bed to possibly get the jump on them if it was indeed an enemy. However, it wasn't a warden who entered. It was a little girl...

She was about four feet tall, probably about 7 years old, with short black hair. Her bangs were just above her eyes and she wore a dress made from scraps of cloth from various other garments. Her eyes showed excitement as she looked towards the pillow. A smile crossed her pale face as she looked around the room. Her eyes eventually fell upon me and she gasped, then squealed with joy as she saw the little armadillo hiding under her bed. "There you are!" she said as she raced towards me. "I'm glad your ok!" she picked me up from under the bed holding me upside-down exposing my soft underside.

It was safe to say that the armadillo part of me did not like this but I forced it down as I looked into her emerald eyes. "You bumped your head on a rock and got hurt, but I made you all better." She said with a smile. She walked over to the mirror with me still in hand. I looked into the mirror and was surprised to see a dark spot of armored skin where a scar had formed where I had hit my head. "You got hurt pretty badly and you were asleep for weeks but your all better now!"

I sat there starring at that scar. I had never been hit bad enough to scar as of yet. I had always been to fast, too clever to get more than a scratch... but this... this could have killed me.

"Renna!" a voice yelled from outside the door with a cruel air to it. "Renna Have You Washed those Clothes Yet, You Good Fer Nothin Bitsch?!?" The girl jumped at her fathers voice, quickly taking me and hiding me under the bed again, replying as she did. "No father I... I was just about to do it..." She span around as the drunken man came in. The rooms smell of pine turned almost instantly to that of stale beer. The man himself had curly Black hair with a messy beard, and he staggered as he spoke. "I Told You To Do Them Shix Minuets Ago! Why Aren't You Doing Them?!?" "Im sorry father I was..." *Smack*

I felt the slap before I saw it, as the girl was knocked to the floor. "How Dare You Talk Back To Me! When your mother died I took care of you all on my own and This is how you thank me?" "Im sorry Father!" the girl said with tears streaming from her eyes as she cowered from him. It took all my control just to not turn into a dragon and eat him right then.

"You wont get and shupper for that and you will shtay in your room for the resht of the night!" the drunken man said. "You will do the clothes in the morning, Do You Hear Me?" "Yes father..." With that the man left slamming the door behind him causing the entire house to shake. I just sat their under the bed shocked at how cruel that man could be to his own daughter! I had seen many evils in the long time I have lived yet humans still surprised me with both how evil and compassionate then can be.

The girl sat there on the ground crying. Her hands holding her face. I came out and rolled over to her. I unrolled and put my front paws on her leg. She stopped crying as she saw me, and we just sat there for a while looking at each other, then I jumped up onto her lap and looked up at her again. Renna smiled, wiping the tears from her eyes. "Thank you..." she said to me, and I wished to say it back but I felt I should not.

I then occurred to her that she did not know what to call me. "What should we name you?" she asked as I sat there, looking at those brilliant green eyes. "How about... Dillo?" I blinked as I heard the name. It was not vary creative but this was a little girl I was with. "So... Will you stay with me? Ill keep you safe and get you more berrys!"

As she said this realization came to me. This girl wanted to be her pet! I couldn't stay there I had a world to see! But I stopped, and looked at the girl again. This girl hadn't see any of the world. She was trapped under her fathers wrath, and without a friend, and... she saved my life when others would have left the dyeing creature there...

No...

I couldn't leave...

What was a decade to one such as me anyway?..

I would stay here and be her friend...

I would stay and be her pet...
