Anatomy of a High School

Chapter 1

How is your lemonade?

Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. "Fucking great." Michael reached for his alarm clock but since he forgot that it was about four feet away he instead ended up falling out of bed. Michael was about sixteen and this was his first day back to school after spring break. "Isn't this just going to be a wonderful day" he murmured as he got off the floor and succeeded at turning off his alarm clock.

Since he was up he decided to go and take a shower before everyone else got up. He grabbed a pair of jeans and trudged up the stairs to the washroom. He then turned on the water and, after making sure the water was set to a good temperature, he slipped in. The next fifteen minutes were spent slowly washing, rinsing and drying himself.

After getting dressed he took a look at the reflection in his mirror. staring back was a human standing just over five and a half feet tall. His dark blue eyes were shrouded by his medium brown hair. His jaw line was cut sharp and he had mild sun burns on the tops of his ears from not using sunscreen during spring break. Some people had said he was cute and had wanted to go out with him but he always reserved himself looking for the right one. He had good grades in science and in math and enjoyed the two but fell behind in English and history. In his free time he always hung out with his friends doing whatever but they always seemed to end up at the skate park skate boarding. He ruffled his hair and went back to his room to look for a clean shirt. After picking up a crumpled, black quick silver shirt and putting on a hat backwards he went back up to the kitchen to grab breakfast.

When he got there he was greeted by the sight of his family who were already having breakfast at the table. He decided to quickly toast a bagel and sat down on the far side of the table. His mom was about forty and about five foot four. She had brown eyes and brown hair and was completely Italian "How did you sleep?" his mom asked.

"Better than I thought I would, but not enough to make me over enthusiastic for the day." Michael replied. He looked at his father. He was about five foot six with salt and pepper hair trimmed to the forty plus age standard. He was British with pieces of German, French, Irish and a whole lot of other things that he couldn't say off the top of his head. At the moment he was drinking coffee and reading the news paper being silent as he always did at breakfast.

Michael was just about to go to the kitchen to clean off his dishes when his brother asked him "hey Michael, you know how it's been raining for the past few days? Well it stopped last night and now it's pretty much dry and I was thinking maybe we could go to the skate park after school and skate." Brody was Michaels' little and only brother. He was in grade seven and was the smallest kid in the class at four foot eleven. He had black hair that was cut halfway down his forehead and had glasses covering up his hazel eyes.

"I was going there at lunch and after school with Chris and Greg anyways, so if you wanted to come you could definitely tag along." Michael replied, than he smiled teasingly and stated "if you can keep up."

"I'll be way in front of you," he retorted since another characteristic he had was having a really big mouth that didn't fit his body.

"Okay, I'll see you there than, and just so you know your bark is way worse than your bite." He said jokingly as he finished up cleaning his dishes, grabbed his lunch from the fridge that he had grudgingly made the night before and headed back to his room to make sure he had everything he needed to take to school for the day.

After slipping on his shoes and grabbing his skateboard his father came down to the entrance way and asked him "when do you think that you will have a girl friend?" his dad was frowning and Michael knew he was being serious.

"Well I'll keep an eye out for someone but most the girls at the school are gross and smoke or are really bitchy." Michael answered.

"Hey! Watch the language young man." fussed his dad over Michaels' use of bad language.

"Sorry but it's true, and I have to go now because I'm running out of time to get to school and I don't want to be late on the first class back. I'll see you when I get home okay? Okay see you." And then Michael walked out of the door.

When he got to the street and looked down the street, he saw that a house that had, up till the day before, had had a for sale sign up on it now had busy movers moving in and out of it making it a busy swarm of movers like a bee hive of drones serving a queen. Michael had weird feeling about who was moving in to that house and wanted to meet them but resisted the urge because he was pretty sure he would eventually. He hopped on to his board and started to push his way to school which was only about five blocks away.

Michael lived in a small town called Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada. It had a population of about twenty thousand and humans were the majority of the population. In fact there had never been furs in this area of Canada so most people in Cranbrook only knew what the media said about them. And of course what the media said about them usually wasn't very flattering. Being that all the news reporters only interviewed the human side of a story and since humans are flawed they thought they were better in every way. Michael liked to think that he was different in this belief but having never actually met a fur he couldn't say if he could be different. He would soon have a chance.

Michael got to Mount Monroe Community High School at 8:15 so he had ten minutes to make it to his locker on the second floor and then to his first class. On the way into the building he heard whispers of conversation... "Hey did you hear that there's a fur in town?" "This fur better know its place or he's gonna get it." "They let a fur into the school? Isn't the staff afraid of rabies or any other diseases they carry?"

Michael hurried up so that he didn't have to listen to his ill informed peers. What the fuck's going on around here? Michael thought to himself as he bit his lower lip. Do they really not think them as equals? And are they serious about that disease bullshit the media is feeding them? He pondered this a minute as he got closer to his locker.

When he finally got there he saw Chris and Greg waiting for him on either side of the locker talking. Chris was 16 and was a blond kid with blue eyes who stood just over five foot nine. While Greg was 15, a red head with brown eyes and stood five foot seven. The three of them were in grade ten together and had been good friends ever since they were five or six.

"Hey Michael!" Chris saw me first "have you heard about the fur?"

"My spring break was wonderful, thanks for asking." Michael replied while opening his locker, not wanting to hear that his best friends were in on the rumours too. "How about you guys spring break any good?"

"Jeez Chris stop being so stupid about the fur." Greg said as he slapped the back of Chris's head.

Good, at least someone has the sense and decency to... Michael thought before Greg interrupted him_._ "It is just an animal and it's not that big of a deal."

Shit.

"We'll probably get to kick it a few times a day and nobody would... Michael?"

Michael had had enough, so he had grabbed his stuff from his locker and had walked off before Chris or Greg had a chance to catch up to him. Well... I'm glad that's over. He thought to himself as he walked down the hall. So what's my first class? He thought for a minute. Then he saw a giant time table showing off its block rotation for the day. Block one... gym. He thought down heartedly. Could this day get any worse? Shit. I just had to say that, of course the days going to get worse now.

Well what do you do when life gives you lemons? You make lemonade... where the fuck do you get the sugar and water?!

Michael hurried to gym. Since it was on the other side of the school and the hallways were packed he wasn't able to get to it till three minutes after the bell.I had to say it, I had to say those stupid damn words. And I thought I could to my first class on time.

He walked in the front doors and was immediately harassed by the teacher. "Michael wear have you been? Everyone has already changed and are ready for the class. Hurry up and go get changed."

Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.

"Mr. James I forgot to bring my gym strip. Could I go get it?" he asked innocently.

"Tardy and unprepared? No, you are not allowed to get your gym strip. You'll have to see what's in the lost and found, and I will want a word with you at lunch."

All the teenagers in the class snickered.

Shit by "want a word" he really means detention. Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid.

As he started to walk to the change room with his head hung low in shame he noticed that the door to the change room was slightly a jar. Open just enough for someone to peak through. That's strange. Michael thought to himself, those doors are designed to stay closed so that no one can peak through.

Just as he finished his thought the door closed as if someone pushed it closed on purpose.

_Weird ._He thought to himself he thought about telling Mr. James about it but he thought that he was already neck high in crap so he stopped hesitating and went through the door.

On the other side, in the change room, the lights were out and Michael wondered why. He reached towards the wall to see if he could find the light switch. This is really odd. Nobody turns the lights off in here. There are always people changing in here. After a few minutes he located the light switch and flicked it on. It was right beside the door he had come from so Michael decided that the lights were probably off because of mistake. He tuned to walk into the main changing area not realizing that right in front of him was a giant timber wolf.

Michael fell back out of shock and panic, he let a little screech out as he fell back. Just before he hit his head on the floor he thought_you just had to say those stupid little words...this lemonade sucks._

Who is this immense timber wolf that has knocked Michael off his feet?

Will Michael be in more trouble for sleeping in gym class?

Will karma give Michael some sugar and water to make decent lemonade?

The answers and more next time on anatomy of High School.
