Journey to Another World 5

Ch. 7

I stood just outside the gym's retractable door to collect my thoughts. 'Would the new combinations with the girls attacks prove to be enough to win.' I looked up at the sky and said a silent prayer to whatever gods were listening and entered the gym. "My name is Donovin and I'm here to challenge the gym leader Crasher Wake to a Pokemon battle for the Fen Badge!" I announced as I stepped over the threshold.

"_ You go get him Donovin _." Rena said as I looked towards the stands that overlooked the gym floor/pool on my right side to see both Rena and Jenavee waving their arms around like a couple of giddy school-girls in love with the high school quarterback.

"Ya! Show that water guy, who the best trainer here is!" Jenavee yelled as well, which finally caused me to droop my head and shake it.

'They probably just want to embarrass me in front of the gym leader.' I thought as I slowly looked the gym over. Much to my disappointment, the gym was also set up (like Maylene's) with many other obstacles to frustrate the trainer and had six trainers to pass before the battle with Wake. Though, this time the obstacles were not moving platforms that you had to move out of the way, it was switches that raised and lowered the water levels to different depths. 'Now this is going to be a pain.' I thought as I looked around and tried to think of a way around that obstacle/s.

"Welcome young trainer. This is the fourth gym in the Sinnoh Pokemon league." Said a man in a brown suit, with deep dark sunglasses. "Currently there are no other trainers here to challenge Wake for the Fen badge, so your challenge is acknowledged and accepted." The man turned to the side and waved his arm over the water/platform gym floor. "In order to reach and challenge Wake however, you must use your cunning to maneuver around the field and hit the proper switches that will lower and raise the water level to allow you to progress..."

'Man. Doesn't this guy know when to shut up? He is acting like one of those 1980's kid game show hosts from Double Dare.' I thought as I nodded here and there, to let the guy think that I was still listening to his rambling.

"If you need to return to complete the coarse to Wake after you've left to heal your Pokemon. The trainers that you've already beaten wont challenge you again. Do you understand all that I've told you or do you need me to repeat what I've just said." The man finished as he took in a long breath and looked at me.

"I think I've pretty much got the jist of it." I told him as I stepped up to the front of the gym and looked about. Like I'd heard, their were a total of six people within the gym (not including the gym leader Crasher Wake). Two kids with inner-tubes, two fishermen, and two sailors. 'Now normally, the challenger would have to battle all the trainers to get to the next switch to lower or raise the water level, but that really doesn't apply to me since I could probably just jump right over some of these gaps.' I looked over the edge of the ledge that I was standing on. 'And even if I fall, I'll probably just end up in the water somewhere. Though the real problem is that is that I need to find out whether or not my new strategy of moves for my girls is really going to work out.'

Taking a quick nod I descend the stairs and move around until I meet the first boy. "Boy mister, your really tall." The little kid said as he tried to hold up his inner-tube around his waist. The kid must have bee no older than 10 by the sheer look of him, with his light blue swimming trunks.

"Um, ya. Thanks kid. Runs in the family." I told him as I gave him a nod.

"Hay mister. As much as I would like to keep talking to ya, this is a gym and our eyes met. So you know what that means." He said up to me as he pulled off a Pokeball from somewhere behind him and pointed it at me, to which I nodded. "I only have one Pokemon so this match should not take that long."

I pulled off a ball and pointed it at the kid but stopped there. 'At a glance, I'd say that this kid would have a pretty weak Pokemon, though I doubt that that's true. For one, why is a young kid like this training at the fourth gym in the league? Second, that look in his eyes tell me...' I took several steps back and laughed.

"What is so funny mister?" The kid asked as he started looking around the gym then back at me.

"Very sneaky kid, very sneaky indeed." I said as I replaced the ball onto my belt and selected another. "Though your sly tactics would have worked on someone else, they aren't going to work on me." I said as I pointed the newly enlarged Pokeball at him. The boy just gave me a confused look then shrugged his shoulder and threw out the ball.

The ball released a slightly intimidating Buizel that looked like it'd seen several battles. The orange and white weasel just stood their as it's tails began to spin and gave a triumphant yell of it's name as it began to hop from foot to foot, as if saying that it was impatient for the battle to begin. "This is my Pokemon, Buizel. This is my only Pokemon and the one that you will have to defeat in order to move on. So if you are quite done laughing, I would like to get this battle started."

"Okay." I nodded to him then looked over his shoulder at what I thought was probably going to be my next challenge. "One last thing." I said as I pointed across the room at the other trainer that looked like a mirror image of the boy, only that trainer was a young girl. "Is that your sister over there?" I asked as both him and his Pokemon turned and looked over at her. 'Foolish.' I thought as I got a good look at the Buizel's back.

"Ya, that's my sister. Why do you ask?" He said as he and his Buizel turned back to face me.

I simply shrugged my shoulders as I tossed out my own Pokeball and out erupted Undine. "No real reason. Just curious on who I have to battle here." Undine looked back at me only to see me with a finger up to my lips. 'Better keep her from talking. Otherwise this gym will be over flowing with trainers to see the 'talking Milotic.' "Alright, Undine. This is our first official battle here at the Pastoria City Gym. Are you ready to take this kid on?" I asked rhetorically to which she cried out in her melodious tone/voice.

"Alright Buizel. Lets start this battle off with a Aqua Jet." The boy said as he pointed at Undine, which the Buizel looked back over it's shoulder and nodded to the boy.

Undine turned her own head back to me, only to see me smiling up at her. "That's right Undine. You know what to do." I said as she gave me a smirk then turned her attention back to the fight.

The orange and white water weasel had surrounded itself with water by using a water gun over itself and quickly used it's twin tails to shoot if off while still using it's water gun to keep itself like a speeding water bullet. Undine waited for a moment longer then brought her tail to bare and began to use the fin to fan herself as she looked seductively at the speeding weasel, then gave it a slow wink. The effect was instantaneous as the weasel quickly lost it's focus and fell to the ground with hearts bulging in it's eyes.

"What in the world!" The boy shouted. "What move is that! You did not even call out an attack. What attack did your Milotic use on my Buizel?"

"None." I simply said as I placed my hands on my hips and looked up at Undine who was now covering her face with her fan at the end of her tail. "Though I'd rather call it a move rather than an attack." I said as I looked over at the boy and smiled to him. "Alright Undine. Lets finish this up with..." Just then the Buizel shot to it's feet and performed another Aqua Jet attack with it's arms still outstretched and hearts in it's eyes.

Undine let out a wail as she quickly dodged the overly stimulated Pokemon and had to dodge a second time. 'Darn it. She really must have turned on the charm this time.' I thought as she continued to dodge the Pokemon that ignored it's trainers pleas for it to stop. 'Even it's trainer knows that something is wrong.' "Undine!" I yelled. "That things out of control and we need to stop it, and stop it 'Cold'."

Undine gave me a quick nod as she dodged the speeding water bullet, then quickly shot off an Ice Beam that promptly froze the weasel to the floor as it was turning around for another pass at her. She leaned down and gave the large icicle a nudge with the end of her snout and gave a nod to me. "Your Pokemon has been frozen and is now defeated." I announced which the boy took a long sigh and nodded.

"A knockout in just one hit and my Buizel's resistant to ice type attacks being a water type." The boy pointed his Pokeball towards the ice and hit the recall command. The red beam shot out and recalled the Buizel from within the ice, leaving a perfect impression of where it'd just been moments before. Once he'd clipped the ball to the back of somewhere on himself, he quickly ran over and handed me a card. "Seeing as I'm the first, I think it only natural that I only pay you with a little amount, but I've got to know what type of attack you used that would set my Buizel off like that."

I looked up at Undine and she gave me a look of confusion as if she didn't know whether or not it would be a good idea to tell the boy the real reason why his Pokemon acted the way it did. I just gave her a shrug and recalled her to await the next battle. "Look kid. How old is your Buizel exactly?" I asked him as he looked up at the ceiling.

"I do not really understand but I think in Pokemon years, that he is around your age mister." He said as he looked down from the ceiling to me with a confused look on his face. "Why. What does his age have to do with how he acted?"

'Ignorance is bliss for the kid, but...oh screw it (literally).' I placed my hand on his shoulder and patted it. "Your probably to young to understand so I'll give you a message that you need to deliver to your parents." I leaned down so that I could whisper to him. "Tell your folks that the story of the Pidgey and the Combee's applies to your Buizel." I told him as he nodded to me and made a (Author: I'm not going to say it, as that joke is older than I am and needs to be buried and forgotten.) strait line for the exit.

After hitting the switch that was on the same platform as the kid, I followed the path down and to the back middle left part of the gym. That is where I met up with a fisherman who seemed more interested in what he was going to catch in the gym rather than a battle, but I knew that my Pokemon needed the experience of battling a water type so lightly tapped him on the shoulder. The man just sighed and reeled in his line and set his fishing pole down. "Most challengers just pass me by since I'm more interested in catching my next big water type." He said as he got up from his little collapsible stool. "Alright kid lets get this over quick, I've got some fishing to get back to." He said as he pulled out a single Pokeball can showed it to me. "I have only caught one Pokemon since being here, so it's going to be quick."

I gave him a nod and he threw out the ball to release a Barboach, that flopped around on the ground just like a fish out of water. I really hadn't ever seen this kind of Pokemon before so I pulled out my Pokedex and looked it up it's type. The dex said that it was a water and ground type Pokemon, so that definitely would be a two mega hitter against Kit being a fire type. "Alright Samantha, come on out."

The man just looked at me, then started tapping his foot on the ground. "Well?"

"Well, what?" I asked him back, but before he could say anything else, his fish was sent sky high as an explosion that happened right underneath his fish. The fish flew quite a distance towards the ceiling then quickly fell back to the floor which made a resounding smack sound. Both trainer and Pokemon started to panic as both were trying to find the Pokemon that had just attacked the fish. Unfortunately this didn't help in the least as the fish was yet again sent sky high by another explosion.

"WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON!" The man yelled as his Pokemon was sent for the third and final time to the ceiling, only to come back down fainted.

"Nice job, Samantha. You can come on back now." I said as I walked over to the man who was still trying to pick his chin up off the floor, then gave me a harsh look.

"What was that Pokemon and what move did it use on my Barboach?" The fisherman demanded as I stopped my advance towards him to collect my earnings. "You never even released a Pokemon from it's ball." He said as he pointed to me. "And until you tell me what Pokemon that you just released, I'm not giving you your earnings."

I just took a long breath and sighed. "A magician never reveals his secrets." I said as I turned to look over the gap at Wake. "So if you refuse to pay me my earnings, then I'll just talk to Wake about your refusal to follow normal battle protocol and have him..."

A hand quickly landed on my shoulder and a look of exasperation was plastered on the mans face. "Ok, ok. I get it. No need to bring the gym leader into this." He said as we both turned to look over at the man who bore a striking resemblance to a few guys that were from the Full Metal Alchemist series (Author: Armstrong and Sig combined if your curious). He then pulled out a card and handed it to me. "Just take your winnings and we'll call it even for not talking to that...muscle man." I turned and patted the man on the shoulder and headed off to the next battle.

My plan was working perfectly as I continued to move from one trainee to the next. Undine would work her charms on any male opponent while Samantha would pick up the slack. That was until Undine looked like she was getting a little winded and at the last trainee. The last challenger before we would be able to get to wake was a sailor in the back left of the gym.

"Hello young trainer. I've seen you working your way quite nicely through the challengers, but I think I've got your method down pat." Said the sailor as he puffed out his chest to make him look a little more intimidating. He then reached behind himself and pulled out a ball that released a Shellos. "Alright Shellos, use your Mud Sport all over the ground." The pink slug like Pokemon looked back at the sailor in a confused way, then turned and started firing off shots of mud from it's mouth all over the field between us. Once the field was completely covered in mud, the sailor looked over at me and laughed. "Now, I'd like to see you try and get whatever that Pokemon to use that weird move it knows."

I slowly raised an eyebrow at the man as I looked over the field. "That would have been a pretty smart move, except for one small thing."

"And that would be?" He asked.

"Now your Pokemon can't really move over the field that well, so is now stuck pretty much where it is." I pointed to the field and indeed the Pokemon would have to trek through the mud to move, which would slow it down considerably. "Plus, I haven't actually released any Pokemon yet." The sailors eyes went wide as he had just jumped the gun (so to speak). "And since you've attacked before my Pokemon has had a chance to even come onto the field, you forfeit the battle." I said as I turned away from him only to stop in mid stride and turn to him. "But that is the cowards way to win. So I'll let this one slide and still challenge you."

The man looked like he was sweating bullets as he looked towards the gym leader. "Oh thank god. I was afraid their that you would do that, since that would immediately ban me from the gym." He pulled out a blue neckerchief and dabbed at his forehead.

"Sure thing. Now come on out Samantha and claw that little thing." I said as I pointed towards the pink Pokemon. Just then their seemed to be a purple vortex that opened up underneath the Shellos and two sets of very intimidating claws appeared on either side of the thing. As quick as a flash the monster like claws raked down he Shello's sides to disappeared into the ground.

"Holly &%($!" The man yelled in fright as he looked at the deep vertical cuts that now were quite evident on the Shellos's sides and could see that the Shellos was shivering in fright as well as from the wounds. "What in the world is that 'Monster!'. Those claws..." He quickly made a cross over his heart and I could start to hear him say some kind of warding chant to protect himself from the 'monster'.

"I guess what they say about you sailors being 'paranoid' is true. You guys will do the most outlandish things to ward off bad luck." I said as I laughed, but abruptly stopped laughing as I looked strait at the man. "Though...To call my Pokemon a 'monster' is taking it way to far." I took a dramatic pause as I slowly removed my glasses and stared at him with my deep red eyes. "And for calling Samantha a monster. I'll show you what a real 'Monster' can do." I pointed at the two and yelled. "SAMANTHA! USE SHADOW BALL, FULL BLAST ON THAT SHELLOS!"

By this time the Shellos was shaking so badly that it looked like it was literally vibrating. Time seemed to slow down as it looked over it's shoulder to it's trainer, with the most sad/watery eyes to it's trainer you could ever imagine. Pleading to be recalled into it's ball, but was unable to as an explosion erupted right in front of it. The explosion launched the terrified Shellos (which was screaming something in Poketongue) back to it's trainer to land right smack into his face with it's sticky/slimy underside.

The momentum from the 'flying' Shellos was so great that the trainer couldn't remain on his feet and quickly fell to his backside. The two simply lay there for a moment before the sailor finally got his wits about him again and realized that something slimy/sticky was frantically clinging to his face. Though no matter how hard he tried to remove the frightened slug, the thing wouldn't let go of it's trainer. I could almost imagine understanding the thing as it would continuously plead with it's trainer to save it from the nasty monster.

It took the trainer a good few minutes to finally pull the slug off his face and by that time the effects/damage from the explosion had finally kicked in, as the Shellos finally fainted. The sailor just looked down at his cupped hands that now held his fainted Shellos, though at this point it, I really wasn't sure if it was really the explosion that knocked out the slug or the fear of being attacked again by the 'monster'. He pulled out a Pokeball and recalled his slug to it's ball and stood up.

"I have to admit. Whatever that Pokemon of yours is, it's incredibly strong to be able to do what it did." He said as he brushed off his backside, then pulled off a second Pokeball. "I only have one more left and I think that I'll have the last laugh. As well as see what that Pokemon of yours is." He said as he enlarged the ball then threw it above himself, to release a Wingull.

I had to admit that he was right. The tactics that I'd previously came up with with Samantha, wouldn't be effective as this Pokemon was in the air as she was attacking from the ground. So in order to attack this thing, she would have to come out from the ground to attack the flying gull. "That is true. I want to keep Samantha's identity a secret and can't do that if she has to reveal herself to attack." I thought for a long moment then simply shrugged my shoulders. "Though I don't think that revealing her at this time would help me to keep that secret against Wake, so...Come on back Samantha." I called as I pulled off my third choice for the battles in the gym.

I saw him scrunch up his face, as he knew that he'd lost the one chance he had on truly revealing that secret to himself, as well as Wake as he too was quite interested by this point of the match (we couldn't see it but Wake was leaning over his podium so much that he looked like he was doing the Popeye/lookout dance move). I looked down at my third Pokeball for the gym and smirked. "Now this might not be the smartest choice to use this kind of Pokemon in this kind of gym, but she does need to get in the practice to battle against water types." I said as I enlarged the ball. "Come on out Kit." Then threw the ball onto the field to reveal my shinny/sparkling Ninetails.

Kit emerged onto the field and let out a happy call, as she materialized from her ball onto the field. It was quite comical when she tried to stand up from her sitting position as she almost had her legs slide out from under her. "Sorry about his Kit, but I really would like you to get in some experience battling against water types." I said as she turned and growled deeply at me for releasing her, not only on this slippery surface but also against a water type in the first place. "Just make sure that you don't move that quickly otherwise..." I paused as a light bulb quickly went off in my head as I looked around the muddy field.

Kit's eyes went wide as she recognized the look of realization that was now flashing in my eyes. She quickly turned back to face her opponent and let out a deep growl to show her defiance over the type advantage, as flames slowly started licking up the sides of her muzzle.

I looked around the field only for a moment more as I was quickly brought back to the realization of the battle, as both Kit and I could hear laughter. We saw that it was actually the sailor that was laughing as the bird was having a difficult time staying aloft as well, due to it's laughter as well. "What a rookie mistake." The man laughed. "Sending out a fire type that's weak against a water type. And here I was thinking that you were some hot shot trainer, who had his eyes set on being an Ace Trainer." The sailor just threw back his head and started laughing quite loudly.

'Jenavee. Can you hear me?' I asked her through the psychic link.

'Of course I can. What do you need.' She asked as she stood up in her seat and looked down over the field to Kit and I.

'I need you to tell Kit what I'm about to tell you.' I said as I went into detail about the brilliant tactic that I'd just come up with on the spot. I didn't need to look over my shoulder at her to know that her eyes went wide, then a smirk appeared on her face.

'Brilliant. That is a great idea Donovin. I will let Kit know right away.' So Jenavee quickly started talking to Kit who would periodically nod her head at what Jenavee was saying psychically to her.

Once the conversation was done, Kit looked out of the corner of eye at me and gave me a smirk as well as a quick nod. Saying that she approved of the move/s that would definitely turn the tide of battle in our favor.

"I'm glad that you approve Kit. Now lets gets this battle started." I said as I pointed up at the bird. "Use it Kit. Use it now."

Kit let out a quick bark as her tails solidified into one silver like mass and she began to sweep her tails across the floor. It was at this point that both sailor and Wingull stopped laughing as they watch Kit move her tail across the floor. "What in the world?" He asked, but was quite shocked when the Ninetails began to spin for what seemed like no reason at all. A split second later, their came a large chunk of mud that was quickly flung from the Ninetails silver tail that quickly collided with the flying bird's face. The man looked up at his flying bird then back to the Ninetails that was once again scooping up another clump of mud with it's shovel like tails.

"That's ingenious." He said. "Your using the mud from my Shellos's Mud Shot and flinging it at my Wingull." He said, but stopped as he smirked. "Though it's going to do you little good, as ground type attacks don't have any effect against flying types." He said again as another shot of mud quickly flew through the air to splat right into the face of the Wingull again.

I just smirked. "That may be true...as far as damage is concerned." The man gave me a weird look as if he thought that my IQ had dropped a few points. "But whoever said that I was trying to actually hurt your bird?" I asked as I pointed to the thing.

The man was brought back to the battle as a resounding thump was heard. He looked down and could see that his Wingull was now lying on the floor and looking around frantically while crying out in distress. The man looked back up at me with wide eyes.

"You see. Even though the attack didn't actually cause any damage. It did however render your bird flightless (due to how much weight from the mud) as well as blind (due to how much of it was on it's face)." I explained as Kit slowly made her way over to the downed bird and growled deeply over it as her tails returned to normal in the process. The bird was shaking quite badly as it knew that it was in deep trouble and froze in it's shiver as Kit growled over it and slowly looked up towards her. "Now this is the point that I could have Kit mercilessly pummel your Wingull, but I don't like to attack opponents that have not only lost the will to fight, but are unable to continue the fight. So I ask you, 'Will you submit?" I asked him as Kit lowered her jaws over the birds neck, intent on dealing the finishing blow if need be.

The man looked down at his bird as Kit's teeth were now bared and wrapped around the birds neck. He continued to look at me then down at the situation with his bird a few more times, until he dropped his head and nodded. "I can't believe this. My Pokemon has lost, even though it's still at full health." He took a long sigh. "I concede the battle." He said as he pulled out the Wingull's ball and recalled it.

I walked over and just as I was about to lean down and give Kit a big old hug for winning against a water type, my feet slipped out from under me from the mud that was still covering the platform, sending me crashing to my butt and then flopping onto my back. I was about to get up when I heard a deep growling sound and tilted my head up to see that my slip had inadvertently thrown a chunk of mud that had smacked right dab onto Kit's face. The mud ball slowly oozed down her muzzle as she turned and quickly started growling at me with a look that I knew meant that I was in some deep trouble.

I quickly turned over and desperately tried to get my feet under me, but only ended up throwing more and more mud up that seemed intent on smacking Kit again and again. Once I'd finally got my feet under me, she was covered in the mud and quickly let out a frustrated Flamethrower that hit my backside that made me yelp and jump off the platform.

"Oh crud..." Splash.
