The House

Season 1 Episode 1: You Are a Tourist

Open your eyes. All around you is a white light. The light is so bright it is hard to make out objects. The light stings, but eventually your eyes become adjusted. Then you see something before you. It is a fist. The fist opens like a lotus. And you realize that this is your hand. You look ahead, and you see a door in the distance. You are standing in a white room. This is your domain. Beyond that door is another world different from yours. You are an alien, but you like to be called a "tourist". Your job is to collect information about this parallel universe and bring it back to the Council. The information you collect will be stored in a feed chip. You are not sure how you know this or what you will find. But you decide to leave.

You are now standing outside. The doorway is gone, and you won't be able to return for several hours. Gravity pulls you down on your knees. You struggle to get up. On this planet you feel so heavy. You finally manage to stand, and look up. Up ahead is a house on a hill. The sky is blue with no clouds. Wind is not present. You walk towards the house. The house is built Victorian style and is painted a peacock blue with white pillars. Majestic with a hint of dust and repair.

You walk up the stairs and knock on the door. No one greets you. You turn the handle. The door opens easily.

http://fav.me/dco6rj9

"Hello?" You say. No answer. You walk down the hallway. You hear some noises. They seem to be coming from downstairs. The door to your left is ajar. There are stairs leading down into the bowels of the house. The noises get louder. Five, maybe six voices bleed into one. There are people there. You walk down the stairs.

The basement is lit by several bulbs and smells strongly of cigarettes and mothballs. Three rows of boxes are stacked up in the righthand corner with exercise equipment on the left side of the room. An itchy rug lies on the floor. You touch one of the concrete walls. It feels icy. Someone laughs and the noise startles you. You walk towards the noise and stumble into the Rec room.

The Rec room has a couch on the left with a chalkboard on the right. Blankets cover the place and a bag of chips lies on the floor. There are people there, but they don't look like you. They look like human-animal hybrids. You stare at them, but they don't see you.

Two of them are sitting on the couch. A female wolfdog and a goth wolverine. A cherry red fox sits on the floor while a squirrel stands next to him. A snow leopard plays at the pool table with his mate, a Leopard seal.

"Hi" you shout. No one sees you. "Nice moves with the game" you say. They don't answer. And you remember that you are invisible. The Council made you invisible because your job as an alien is to collect information and not to interact.

The wolfdog has reddish fur with grey eyes. Her nose is pinkish, and she wears studs in her ears. She crosses her legs and pulls at the hem of her flowery skirt. She watches the pool match with no interest.

The wolverine is interesting. She is not watching the game or talking to the wolfdog. She is looking at her phone, the blue light shining on her face. She is dressed in black making her look like a thousand-year-old vampire. The wolverine does not wear makeup but wears a spiked choker around her neck. Her face is expressionless.

The fox has fur like a wildfire. His eyes are bright red as well. He is wearing a light grey hoodie and bright blue jeans. He is chatting away with the squirrel boy and is listening to techno music on full blast.

The squirrel nods his head. He doesn't say much to the social fox. He wears glasses that are too big, and a fedora which makes his head seem larger than his pencil body. His grey tail wraps around his legs.

The snow leopard is concentrating on the game. His fur was so grey that it was almost blue. He wore heavy eyeliner which made his eyes look Egyptian. Two toothpicks stuck out of his lower lip. He wore an indigo robe and had spots dotted all over his body.

The Leopard seal was not as pretty as the wolfdog or the wolverine. She wore a pink bow and her head was shaped like an albatross egg. The seal wore a pearl necklace and a pink off-the-shoulder top. She had a smile on her face.

"What are you smiling about?" the wolfdog asked.

"It's nothing Geraldine" said the seal.

"It is not nothing! You've been smiling like that the whole time. You're up to no good," Geraldine hissed.

"Stop assuming that Geraldine. I'm smiling because I'm sure I'll win this time" the seal said smugly.

"Pff. Yeah right. Leona, I suggest you give up. We've been playing for hours and you haven't won a single game," said the snow leopard as he batted at an 8-ball. The 8-ball knocked into number nine, which bumped number three, and stopped.

"Oh yeah! Well it's not my fault that I have less experience than you, Kodei. Just let me try. I am motivated. I can do anything" said Leona. Geraldine snickered and Kodei rolled his eyes.

"What are you laughing at?" growled Leona.

"You're naïve you know that. Don't underestimate Kodei's pool skills" Geraldine jeered.

"Shut up! I'm trying. Let me try."

"Silly Leona. There is no try. Only do" said the fox.

"Shut up Leif! Star Wars is for babies."

"Okay jeez!" Leif murmured.

"Leona... why are you being so mean? You're mean like every single day. I don't understand why you can't be nice" said Geraldine.

"I am not!"

"Uhh...yes you are. You insulted Leif, you don't want my help. You're being rude."

"Well, I don't want you telling me how to play."

"I'm trying to be nice Leona!"

"You really are a thorn in my side" whispered Leona. Geraldine growled.

"What did you just say?"

"Nothing."

"You said something."

"I did not."

"Yes, you did."

"Ugggghhh. What are we? Kindergartners? Fine! I'll admit it! Geraldine Dubois, you are a thorn in my side" shouted Leona. Everyone stopped. The music was turned off. Everyone turned their head towards Leona. Geraldine stood up, and Kodei paused.

"Thorn in my side? How dare you call me that!" Geraldine roared. Leona picked up a pool ball and chucked it at Geraldine. The ball hit her in the chest. "Okay, that's it!" Geraldine shouts. She bolted towards Leona and punched her in the face.

"Oh right!" said Kodei. "Get her Leona!"

"Bitch fight, bitch fight, bitch fight!" someone shouted. The two girls were now fighting. Geraldine grabbed Leona and whammed her against the wall.

Leona bit Geraldine.

Drops of blood fell on the floor as Leona punched Geraldine in the head.

http://fav.me/dco6rqq

Both girls collapsed on the floor. They struggled.

Geraldine grabbed a bottle that was on the floor, and counter-attacked with it. Leona screamed and let go. The red wolfdog grabbed a picture frame off the wall and Leona stood up. They stared at each other. Both snarled and were red eyed.

Geraldine yelled a war cry and threw the picture frame at Leona.

Leona ducked, and the painting hit the wall. The two soldiers were now furious. They ran and began pounding each other in the chest.

Geraldine got a chokehold around Leona.

Leona punched Geraldine in the snout and bit her wrist. Geraldine loosened her grip.

Leona dug her nails into Geraldine and ripped her dress. She clawed at Geraldine's neck.

Geraldine yelped in pain. She tore of Leona's necklace and beat her with it. The wolfdog slammed her against the chalkboard.

http://fav.me/dco6rt6

Leona grabbed a sconce from the candelabra and dragged the flame on Geraldine. Geraldine was now burning. She yelped as the fire ate away at her dress. She began to run around the room. Smoke clouded the atmosphere.

"Geraldine! Stop, drop and roll!" shouted Leif.

"Good job Leona!" Kodei said with a foolish grin. Geraldine was now on the floor rolling about. The flames were dying down and the back of Geraldine's dress has been turned to ash. Leona stuck her tongue out and Geraldine cursed underneath her breath. These animal-people are just as stupid and clumsy as our own, you think to yourself.

"Hey! What's going on down there?" a voice boomed.

http://fav.me/dco6rwz

Everyone looked up. A huge white bear was standing in the door way. You looked at him. This bear was about seven feet tall and probably weighed 990 lbs. His muscles were humongous, but his fur seemed to make him look mountainous. He had several scars on his face and wore a golden crown on the side of his head. The bear wore a black robe which draped over his body. This was the boss bear.

The bear looked around at the mess. "Why does it smell like smoke?" he cried. He stood with his arms akimbo and looked at Geraldine, then at Leona. Both were bruised and bleeding. "You were fighting?" he scoffed.

"We...we didn't mean to" whispered Leona.

"You didn't mean to. Hmph. Did you see what you did to my mate? She's hurt. You ruined her dress. And that dress was expensive. And Kodei, why didn't you intervene?"

"I...I-" Kodei stammered.

"That's enough!" roared the bear. "Kodei, you just egged them on. Someone could've gotten hurt badly! And Leona and Geraldine. You're always constantly bickering."

"Erik..." said Geraldine.

"Be quiet! Listen to what I have to say. I leave the House for two hours and when I come back, the place smells like smoke, the Rec room is trashed, and my mate is beat up and it's all because no one was doing the right thing! I'm not sure if I can trust you guys anymore. Especially you Kodei. You're the Beta leader. You're supposed to enforce the rules. How can I trust you if you let this kind of shit happen?" said Erik. Kodei looked down at the ground. His ears flattened against his head.

"I'm sorry" he said.

"You better be" said Erik. Erik looked at the room. "I want all of you to clean the Rec room until it's spotless and better than it was before" growled the bear. Erik walked towards Geraldine and helped her up. "And no one touches my girl, especially you Leona! Do not touch her!" he yelled. You watch as the bear and the wolfdog exit the room. "This room better be clean by three o'clock!" said Erik as he slammed the door shut.

Everything was quiet. Everyone stood still. The wolverine looked up from her phone. "What's happening now?" she asked.

You walk back to your domain. The feed chip has recorded every interaction. The feed chip was implanted in your head. It turns memories into code that is accessible to everyone. Everything you see, touch, taste, smell, and hear can also be felt by others. You don't remember much of your childhood, but in the alien community you were assigned to collect information about other planets. You never questioned your work or why you were doing this. The feed chip is essential for collecting specimens without harming them. Once the memory has been all used up, the data is extracted from your head and put into an online database. Everything you see is nothing more than a binary file. But every memory you make is removed. You know that all memories you make are deleted after they are used for scientific purposes. But you don't care. You see yourself as nothing more than a tool and follow the rules to the very extreme.

The door opens and once again, you are in the white room where you started. As soon as you step inside, the door closes. You exit the room and walk down the hallway into the laboratory. The laboratory is a small room. Two rows of computers are in the back of the room. Both rows are filled with researchers doing work. The front of the room is a lab with cabinets stocked with lab supplies. A woman with brown hair peers through a microscope. She pauses her work and looks up. "N-151, what did you record for us today?" she asks with a blank stare.

"Well...the planet is a lot like Earth, but the inhabitants are...strange" you say.

"What makes them strange?" she asks.

"They look like human animal hybrids. Basically, anthropomorphic animals."

"Interesting. Did you see any structures?"

"Yeah. I saw a house. I went inside it. It was like a very old-timey house which was painted blue. The animal people were living inside it. I think it was kinda like a frat house. I didn't see any other cities."

"You won't be seeing any other cities or towns. That was the spot you were assigned and those are the people you will report on. Did you see any religious figures?"

"No."

"Did the inhabitants see you?"

"No. The invisibility device worked perfectly."

"And has anyone spotted our ship yet?"

"I don't think so" you answer.

"Good" she replied. "Follow me. We need to extract the data out of your head." You nod as you follow her into a dark room. The woman asks you to lie down on the bed which you do. She attaches a device to your head and hooks it up to a computer. The device hums and sends an electrical pulse. You twitch. Even though you have repeated this procedure thousands of times, the electrical shock stuns you. You tell yourself that it will be over soon and try to ration your breaths. You relax your muscles and your heartbeat slows down. You close your eyes and the world fades to black.

You wake up. You are in your domain again. It takes you a second to realize where you are. The back of your head feels funny. And then you remember what happened yesterday. They haven't deleted your memories yet. They are being generous by letting you keep them for a while. Well, until the research project is over. Thankfully, that won't be for a long time. The Council will be very pleased with your work.

You go to the bathroom and look in the mirror. A stranger looks back at you. The Council forced everyone to take on the forms of humans. They did this, so the aliens could do their work but still stay anonymous. It is hard for you to get used to it. You can't take the skin off. They won't allow you to. You touch your cheek and long to feel scales. Your eyes are also different, and you have a nose and a mouth which you find bizarre. As an alien, there was no need for eating. You've seen other life forms do it, but you've never experienced it. You grab a lock of your white hair. This is what hair is, you think to yourself. You sigh. You know that you are an alien, and you will always be an alien, but you don't recognize yourself.

http://fav.me/dco6s2i

As soon as you are ready, you step outside. You check to make sure that the invisibility device is on. Then you exit. The door closes. It is drizzling outside. A wind from the North blows the rain into your face. You are adjusting to the gravity, but it still shocks you. You walk towards the house and enter. It is warmer in here. The house is surprisingly quiet, so you decide to explore for a bit. You stroll into the dining room. The squirrel sits at the table, reading a book. He hunches over. The fox pops his head in. "Hey Jung" he says.

"Hey" replied Jung.

"What are you reading?" said the fox. The fox pulled up a chair and sat next to Jung.

"Franz Kafka."

"Damn. That is pretty hard shit."

"Yeah."

"Hey Jung, do you wanna go for a walk with me?"

"I'm busy."

"But you always say that. C'mon Jung. Everyone is napping but us. Let's go out."

"Pff. Fine" said Jung as he closed his book. The fox grabbed a coat from the clothes tree, and Jung put on his boots.

"Let's go!" he said.

"Wait up Leif!" shouts the squirrel. The fox ran out the side door and the squirrel followed suit. You decide to follow them.

Outside it is still drizzling. You shiver as you walk through the tall grass. The fox and the squirrel walk alongside you.

"Where are we going?" cries Jung.

"There's a special place where I like going to. It's around here somewhere" says Leif.

"Man, that fight yesterday was weird."

"I know right? Geraldine and Leona are very dysfunctional."

"Leif why do they hate each other?"

"I dunno. Leona doesn't like authority. She hates it when others tell her what to do or how to do something. And Geraldine well, she's very aggressive. Especially when someone angers her or insults her. I also think that it kinda has to do with Kodei because when Geraldine first got here, she would always look at Kodei and would flirt with him. But Kodei showed no interest in her and instead became Leona's boyfriend. So, yeah. It's very complex."

http://fav.me/dco6s5m

"But isn't Geraldine Erik's mate?"

"Yeah. They're boyfriend and girlfriend now. But I don't think she likes him very much. Erik has a shallow personality. He only liked her because of her looks."

"Wow."

"Yeah..." There was a moment of silence. Then the squirrel spoke.

"So, who do you like?" he asked. The fox blushed.

"N-no one at the moment. I'm not sure. I like girls. But I also like boys. But at the same time I just want to be liked by everyone." The squirrel nodded.

"I know how you feel" said the squirrel.

"Thanks."

Leif and Jung walked some more. Up ahead was a cliff the size of a giant. The sound of the roaring waves and the cries of birds drummed in the air. A wind from behind ruffled through the grass, and it stopped raining. "This is it," said Leif. The squirrel and the fox sat down at the edge of the cliff. They watched as the water lapped at the shore like tongues. You stood at the edge. Looking up, it felt as if the ground wasn't there. Looking down felt more secure. It was a long way down and you prayed that you wouldn't fall.

"It's beautiful isn't it?" said Leif.

"I guess. Still kinda cold though."

The fox took out a small thermos from one of his pockets. "Here. Take a long sip."

"But it's so small!" Jung exclaimed. The thermos was the size of a small coffee cup.

"Just drink Jung. You'll feel better." Jung took a sip.

"There's nothing but warmed root beer in here."

"Surprise!" shouted Leif. The two boys laughed. You continued to stare out at the sea. Beams of light shined down from the heavens, casting a warm glow onto the water. Everything was peaceful.

A lone bird perched on a tree nearby. It was grey in color with violet streaks. The bird had a fork-shaped tail, and claw-like talons. It glanced at you. You locked eyes with it. The bird began to fluff up it feathers. It let out a screech. Jung and Leif looked up.

"What is that?" asked Jung.

"Oh, that's a Fisher bird. They're very rare and only show up when natural phenomena occur. I don't understand what it's doing here." But you know that the bird has seen you. You stay still. Running will only give you away. The bird leapt off the branch and landed at your feet. It began to flap its wings wildly and hissed.

"What's it doing?" said Jung.

"I dunno. Maybe it's hungry?" The sky began to get darker and the wind howled.

"Leif, I don't like this. Let's go home."

"Yeah." The fox and the squirrel walked away. You backed away from the bird slowly and ran after them. Rain began to fall. Soon it was a downpour.

"Dammit! Why?" shouted Leif. Water dripped off Leif's coat and soaked his shoes. Rain water sloshed into Jung's boots.

"Let's get out of here!" shouted Jung. They ran through the wet grass. The Fisher bird yelled out a cry, which echoed in the field. You looked up. A murder of screeching Fisher birds blackened the sky. "What's with all these birds?" said Jung.

"I don't know man."

The birds began divebombing Leif and Jung. The boys swatted at the birds, ripping out feathers and stabbing claws. Your heart is pounding in your chest. The animals can see you. You run away from Leif and Jung. The birds see you and immediately track you down. You scamper away with your heart in your throat, and a fist squeezing your lungs. The squirrel looks up.

"Leif, they're no longer attacking us."

"That's...strange."

"The birds are going to the left. Where are they going?"

"Doesn't matter Jung! Let's get out of this storm." The fox and the squirrel run out of sight. You dart into a deep wooded thicket. The bushes scratch your shins. Your cover hasn't been blown yet, but the fact that animals know who you are is a bad sign. You dart out of the shrubbery. The birds see your weaknesses and begin attacking. You try to swat them away, but it is hard to see. The birds are everywhere. Their talons feel like needles and their beaks are like mallets. You try to scream, but instead you choke on some feathers. It is hard to move. Some of the birds yank at your sleeves and try to pick you up. Your skin is scratched and torn from the attack. You struggle. A bird flies towards you and attacks you on the head leaving a deep gash. Blood pours from your forehead and drips into your mouth. The metallic zang of iron floods your mouth. You sway. Like a tree, you fall to the ground. Your crown hits a bed of Miner's Lettuce. You don't make a sound and the world darkens.

You wake up. You know that you are in the Emergency Room because the place reeks of piss and 409. A blue blanket covers you. You want to get up, but you are too tired. A mirror is on the ceiling. You gaze at your reflection. Your forehead is no longer bleeding. A bandage has been wrapped around it. A nurse walks into the room. "What happened?" you ask.

"You were attacked by Fisher birds. We found you alone in the forest unconscious. There was a scary pool of blood, but we were able to seal the wound before it got infected" said the nurse.

"Okay."

"However, we won't allow you to do more observing until you get better. We have found out that animals can still see you. The engineers are trying to update the invisibility device. The Council is concerned about your safety. Be more careful next time."

"Sure." The nurse leaves. You sit up. Why is it that animals can see me but, the inhabitants cannot? You think to yourself. "Why did the sky turn black? Where did all those birds come from?" You say out loud. You bite your nails and stare at the ceiling. A boy stares back at you. He has white hair, with brown eyes, and a scared look on his face. He looks like a ghost. "Who are you? Why are you here?" you say to yourself. Everything is silent and all is quiet.
