Chapter 1: This is just the first day
Here I am, alone in the dark. Walking slowly along a corridor looking at the glowing eyes and evil smiles watch me as I pass. Glowing cubes and "tic tac" noises surrounding me. It reminds me of myself and my own living. I hate this place. I hate how it is the same every night; I hate how it seems as if there is no retreat or help anywhere to be found. I just keep walking toward a door outlined with a pure light against the rough red and black world around me. It gets farther and farther as I try to get closer. I start to run and before I know it I burst through the door and a Noise surrounds me. It stops everything. It fills my head.
*beep beep beep beep* I wake up slowly as my alarm beeps annoyingly from across the room. 'I hate this clock' I said to myself as I tossed myself over the railing of my loft bed onto the ladder to quickly turn off the annoying noise. 'it does its job though' I thought as I mashed the buttons on the top of the machine with a paw. It read 4:30 am. I then stretched out and blinked my eyes a few times to give me some more clarity and maneuverability. I look around my room slowly. It was a mess. Clean and dirty clothes mixed in small piles in different corners. My desktop humming as it sat on top of the desk under my bed. A mess of cords and random broken computers, manuals, and other technology overflowing on every open space in the small room, "eh, it's still home to me" I said to myself out loud as I started to get ready for work.
I walked through the hallway outside my door with an armload of clothes in my left hand and my right hand opening the bathroom door. I flicked the light on slightly blinding myself at the quick change in brightness and dumped my clothes on the counter top. I looked into the mirror sizing myself up, as was part of my every morning routine. I was a 5' 11" 175lb Arctic Fox or as I know myself "Vulpes lagopus". I did not look very muscular due to my long fur. I liked to keep it that way, nice and toasty, I never really liked to wear to many layers unlike my family. I had been told I had a swimmer build buy some people in the Gym when I sparsely visited. I had a lot of muscular potential but I never really like to show if off so I was ridiculed as a "small little guy" by my peer's, yet when I was challenged or when I was really pissed I always had "won", if you count 'getting the shit kicked out of you till the other guy gave up' winning. Anyway, as I slid into muscle builder poses to admire and smile at myself I realized I should finish getting ready.
I stepped into the shower and turned on the water, shivering as the initial blast hit my nose dead on. After Snuffling the ice cold mountain water out of my nose the water turned warmer and I started to lather up my fur. After I successfully tuned myself into a large sudsy puff ball, I rinsed myself off savoring the feeling of warm water in the morning. "I really do need to get a trim" I said to myself as I vigorously rubbed a towel across my body, drying myself off.
I dressed myself in my usual work attire, Black slacks and a dress shirt with some sort of design on the lower left abdominal area, un-tucked of course. Always shows originality and some class. I grabbed my workbag/backpack as I got ready to leave for work. I stuffed my Dell laptop into the bag along with my flash drive, external hard drive, and my double bagged lunch. I donned the backpack as I trudged outside into the rising sun and cold morning. I slipped into the car and stashed my stuff in the trunk before I started my car up to get it warm. A thin film of ice covered the outside windows. I was about to get out and scrape it off until I noticed my creepy neighbor standing outside.
My neighbor was a rat. He had always had a creepiness that pervaded him, even this morning. He was standing in the heart stopping cold in nothing but a bathrobe looking in through his own front window. "He really does creep me out." I said to myself before I pulled out of the driveway. Once I arrived at work I walked in through the doors and began my checklist.
- Get greeted by the "Normal's". As I walked down the hall I waved to the cute Rabbit secretary, head bobbed toward the guy running around with papers, saluted to the serious guy, obliged the "hi-five" guy, and shuffled past the "I'm to awkward for normal society guy". 2. Reach office and begin step by step monogamous work on random computer issues throughout the company. The only problem was that this step was postponed because my boss mark called me from down the hall. Mark was a tall muscular wolf at a staggering 6'5". He was a monster compared to the other workers. He had a booming voice that made all either shudder or hang onto his words. I was the kind who shuddered.
"Hey Marvin!" he called down the hall attracting much unwanted attention "how was your weekend my friend?" he asked me as he placed his hand on my shoulder.
"Eh, I can't really complain" I said trying to make the conversation as brief as possible.
"So..." he said with a slight pause "you were going on an extended vacation in august right?"
"yes?" I responded, confused on where he was going with it.
"well since we are going to expand our branches next month we are going to need more people like you. So I was going to ask if you would be willing to train your new co-worker" he said with a grin.
"Umm... Sure. I Guess. But why do I have to train them for 5 months if I'm only going to be gone for 45 days?" I asked inquisitively.
"well because they will work with you after you are back" he responded still smiling. The smile was hiding something. Like an inside joke that only he found humorous.
"Well... Ok mark" I replied "when will he be here?"
"Actually SHE is in your office. I guess you two can get acquainted and start today." He said as he walked away looking as he was laughing.
