A New Life Part 2

I always tried to be a tough guy after middle school. Not because I needed to it was because I was scared. I was scared of my family and had no friends so why try. Now I am trying to stay alive. I do not want to kneel before the masters. I want to fight them. I was never a good student. My grades plummeted during high school and I never went to college but I have street smarts and I plan on using them.

Chad opened his eyes to find himself in a completely white room. He stood up and stretched feeling no pain from his fight with Crusher.

"Have a nice sleep?" said the man who brought him to this universe.

"You again!" Chad yelled growling and trying to slash at the man but goes right through him.

"Nice try but you are knocked out." The man laughed a bit turning to face Chad. "You are sedated and they are dragging you to a cell."

"What do you want from me then?" he asked getting back up.

"Just seeing how your day is going." The man said in a mocking voice "In 24 hours you managed to get yourself into a lot of trouble. Granted you were thrown into a very difficult situation. Being a slave."

"I am not a slave!" Chad shouted. He would have thrown something if there was anything in the room.

"Really now? You helped that landscaper out. I thought you hated Hispanics?" he grinned a bit knowing that he is getting into Chad's skin.

"Not all of them...well it's complicated." His hands rubbed the back of his furred neck.

"Oh, do tell. I would love to hear this." A chair appeared as the man sat down.

"Well it was middle school and I had a friend who moved away after the year was up." Chad explained "He was nice...his grandmother did not speak English but would always cook these good meals..."

"So, you were not racist to begin with." The man said "I know it is years of abuse from your parents and you hung out with the wrong crowd and became a slave to their ideas."

"It's not like that!" Chad shouted again.

"Oh, but it is."

"Well since you learned something from me I want to know something." Chad demanded

"What is that?" the man replied looking intrigued

"What is your name?" he asked

"My name has not been said for many years but you can call me Jim." Jim said "Now the sedatives are wearing off so good luck." The room started to go back.

"Wait! I need to know why I am here!" Chad yelled before blacking out again.

He awoke again this time in a prison cell chained to the wall again. Looking out his cell he saw empty cells all around with the smell of mildew penetrated his nostrils. The walls and floor were concrete and looked like they have not been cleaned for years. His cell was bare except for the chains that held him.

Struggling against his chains he heard footsteps as soon as he made a racket and Brutus came into his view. "So, you are awake. Bradley wants a word with you and he is very unhappy." He said getting into the cell and unchaining Chad before pulling him up and almost dragging him out of the prison and through a door which led to the ground floor of the mansion. Inside they passed a woman who was dressed in a very nice dress and red hat that would protect her from the sun. He had red hair with a beautiful face and looked in her late 20's.

"Going to see my husband?" she asked

"Yes, this one has been causing a bit of trouble." Brutus said "Keep your distance." The woman laughed and moved closer to inspect Chad.

"Oh please, I am able to pass by Crusher without a growl from him and regularly chat with Seth. This one is no threat." She laughed a bit putting her hand on Chad's head and giving him a little pat making him feel a bit degraded.

"Up to you my lady but this one does not know you." Brutus reminded as she walks away. "That was Bradley's wife Lizette. A kind girl but do not get on her bad side." He pushed Chad further down the hall until they got to the door of Bradley's office. Brutus knocked and opened the door.

"How is Crusher doing?" Bradley asked looking very irritated. He gave a glare towards Chad.

"Wounded but stable. He will be out for several months sad to say." Brutus replied with a little hint of sadness.

"A shame he was my best fighter and popular too." Bradley said as he poured himself a drink from a bottle. "Well then I guess we can give Chad a choice...since you beat Crusher you have two choices...you can be whipped until your fur and skin are ripped from your flesh or you can fight in Crusher's place. Speak!"

"I..." Chad said knowing that both choices could lead to his death but one of them he would have a shot of surviving. "I will fight in Crusher's place."

"Good, it is too the death but until then you are exempt of work." Bradley said "The fight is in two days you better prepare for it or say your prayers to whatever goddess you beasts worship. Does not matter since you all worship some stupid sounding goddess. Out!"

Brutus shoved Chad out the door "Go away. You are free to wander the grounds and visit the library as long as you do not shed everywhere."

As soon as Chad left and walked down the hall the two men continued.

"Changing the rules of the fight?" Brutus asked

"Yes, he injured my fighter and I will be damned if I do not let him get away with it." Bradley explained "Win or lose I get money from the fight and hopefully that damn beast will be either killed or severally injured. He may have been able to take down Crusher but Crusher was holding back according to the guards. His opponent will not be holding back."

With his mind full of dread of the upcoming fight in two days he needed to talk to someone. He headed up the to library to see if Seth was there. The fox may have been a little stuck up but he might be a good listener. He climbed the stairs to it and opened the door to see Seth sitting in a chair reading a book.

"Oh, you somehow managed to away I see." Seth said amused "So what did they do? No visible wounds except for that leg but that was like that already...so the question is what did you agree to?"

"Shove it Seth. We need to talk." Chad said surprising Seth a bit "I agreed to fight in Crusher's place and yes I am worried but I need to know a few things."

"Come seeking knowledge. Well there might be hope for you yet." Seth laughed a bit "You know Crusher comes up here sometimes but only for me to read to him. He likes Green Eggs and Ham for some reason. Want me to read it to you?"

"Fuck no." Chad said rudely looking through some of the books. Most of the stories he had not heard of. "Do you have a map of this world?"

Seth nodded and walked to one of the shelves and took out a book that was bigger than normal and sets it down on a table and opens it showing a world map that Chad did not recognize. Rather than continents there was just two. A bigger one almost oval shape and a smaller one the size of Australia.

"Since you need a history lesson the bigger one is called Northern Terran and the little one is called Southern Terran. We are currently located here." Seth pointed to the bigger continent thee quarters of the way up near the coast.

"What is in the smaller continent?" Chad asked

"A wasteland." Seth said bluntly. "Us beasts led a revolt there and the humans bombarded it to dust. There is almost nothing left. They keep an eye on it and if something moves it is bombed. A way to keep us under control."

"Well how did we...I mean human get control of us?" Chad asked curiously

"A war. Both races lived together in peace but the beasts were separated by species. Wolves, Foxes, Cats, Bears, and Horses." Seth explained "The five races were manipulated into war with each other and over the years they got weaker while the humans got stronger."

"What happened then?"

"The humans attacked taking out the Horses first. They fell easily since they were mostly farmers and suffered the worst defeats." Seth said "Then the bears fell. They were the strongest and the worst hit since they fought down to the last bear in most battles. Most of their population was wiped out." He sighed a bit "From there the cats, foxes, and wolves fell one after another and any survivors were enslaved. The books say that over 100 million beasts were killed compared to only a few thousand humans but the books can lie."

"I see...anything you can tell me about my fight then? Because I really prefer not to die." Chad asked

"Well I am not a fighter." Seth replied "Never was and never will be. I was blessed with having masters who taught me to read and write before they sadly had to give me up."

"I bet that was difficult." Chad said sarcastically. "You are here in a library while others are suffering." He closed the book and shoved it into Seth.

"I do more than that. I am a butler to the family. They rarely need more though. Mostly to answer calls at night or answer the door to guests." Seth explained "Brutus or guards do not count."

"I am going to see who else can help me." Chad said heading downstairs.

"Well the wolves religious meeting is tonight. You should attend." Seth yelled

"I am not the religious type." Chad replied walking out the door and outside.

Not having anything to drink in hours he managed to get some water from an outside faucet and noticed that the sun was going down. How long was he out? Wandering towards the barn where food was served he ran into the wolf who served him food earlier.

"You missed dinner." The wolf said "Though I have some leftovers. What an incredible fight. Last sucker who fought Crusher had his legs broken."

"Can he tell me anything about fighting?" Chad asked

"No, he is dead." The wolf laughed "He will not be missed. He was an ass. And no Crusher did not kill him. He died from an accident from the factory. That place does not care for safety."

"So how come you talk normally but others don't?" Chad asked

"Because I am one of the smart ones." He replied "I am the cook and religious leader of the wolves here. Which is where I am headed. My name is Preacher by the way. Not my real name but the humans call me that and it stuck."

"My name is Chad. Local Troublemaker it seems." Chad said walking with him.

"Well after almost killing Crusher it is no surprise." Preacher said as they got to a small clearing with a stone in the middle. He noticed that there was some strange words that he did not recognize. It was a foreign language. Around them were about 10 other wolves.

"Sit down Chad." Preacher commanded as he sat down. "Today we celebrate the goddess of the moons. Rhea the Goddess of life who fills us with the energy of youth and when it is our time to pass she would snuff it out and Phobos the goddess of hope who keeps us going every day. Tonight, pack brothers and sisters we have a new member. Chad, he will be fighting in two days. Let the goddess bless him and protect him."

The rest of the sermon was Preacher talking about the goddesses and saying a prayer in what Chad assumed was the wolves native language which was a series of barks and yips.

It lasted only a half and hour afterwards Preacher brought Chad some of dinner which was a piece of chicken and some potatoes before heading to the bunkhouse for sleep. He was given an empty bed to sleep on. In the shack was dozens of cots each with just a blanket and pillow and nothing more. A small footlocker was at the end for any personal items they may have earned. Laying down he finally got some much needed sleep.

Chad woke up in a more pleasant room this time than the all-white room. It was a living room with a couch and a TV was on showing some old shows. Jim was on the couch flipping through a newspaper.

"I am surprised to see that you attended that religious ceremony." Jim said putting the newspaper down on the end table. "Never took you for religious."

"I never was." Chad replied turning the TV off "My family went to church but I never cared for religion."

"Yet you attended. Why was that?" Jim asked grinning a bit

"Not sure...maybe I just needed help." He replied sitting down in a nearby recliner "Or maybe I have nothing better to do. I am exempt from all work until the fight."

"That will be brutal." Jim said concerned a bit "I know your opponent and I know what he is capable of."

"Who is he? I need to know? And do you know who will win?"

"I can not tell you." Jim replied sternly. "I am not allowed to tell. And I do not know the future. That is up to you."

"So, what is this place anyways? I mean the world I am in. Is it hell?" Chad demanded "Am I being punished."

"Not hell not purgatory either." Jim explained "There are an infinite dimensions in the universe. More than you can fathom. Some maybe able to visit them in their dreams and go through past memories of themselves. This is one of them. You on the other hand died in your dimension. Killed by a mugger in that alleyway. You can never go back."

Chad suddenly had a wave of feeling flow through him from dread, anger, fear, loss. "You what? You killed me!" he yelled picking up the recliner and throwing it at Jim who just stood there as it flies right through him.

"Not me...just a lowly mugger." Jim replied "You were supposed to die there. That was your destiny. I gave you a second chance at life. Here your fate is open."

"Whose body am I in then? You could not make a body out of thin air?" Chad asked still enraged

"Someone who also died. He escaped a few years ago and died from a fall." Jim explained "I put him back together erased all scars and placed your soul in his."

"What are you anyways? A god?" Chad asked

"No, not a god." Jim replied "Someone who suffered all his life and for his suffering is granted powers." He rolled up a sleeve to his shirt to show burns going up his arm. "Now it is time for you to wake up. You have about 24 hours to plan on the fight. Make use of them."

Chad woke up and looked around feeling a bit groggy with his body hurting from the last couple of days thanks to being chained up to walls and the fight withy Crusher. Getting up slowly the other slaves were getting ready for breakfast.

At the barn where breakfast was being served Preacher gave him double rations of oatmeal and slices of ham. "At least they are feeding us well." Chad commented

"They use to give us scraps but the master feels that we are more profitable with well fed slaves than hungry ones." Preacher explained "Still this stuff is cheap."

Chad ate in silence as he was worried about the fight tomorrow. He saw Tanya walk over and sit down next to him.

"If you want to win fight. You move fast." She explained "Wolves and bears fight slow. Powerful. Fight like cat and move fast."

"How do you know?" he asked

"I see fight before." She replied "Wolves large. Bears large. Cats and Foxes small. More agile. You not as large as them. Move quick. Use brain to fight."

"I will take that into consideration." He said sighing as he ate the last of his ham and picked at his oatmeal.

After breakfast he wandered around the grounds a bit ignoring the other slaves. Word got around pretty fast that he was fighting tomorrow and preferred not to talk about it with them.

He came across San gassing up a riding lawnmower. "Can we talk?" Chad asked

"Sure. Just preparing to mow the lawn." San replied "They told me that you are not going to help me today. Did they reassign you?"

"No. They are having me fight tomorrow." He replied as San had a look of fear.

"Oh god...you need to be on your toes." San said "A year ago Bradley invited me to watch one of the fights. I figured it was going to be like a boxing match with no gloves. I saw one wolf tear the other's organs out. I never wanted to see that again."

"Listen...I hate to admit this...but I am scared." Chad said with some tears in his eyes. "I do not want to die."

San patted his shoulder. "I have a plan...it's not much but I can slip you a painkiller. It will numb the pain at least and give you an edge."

"What if they check for it?" Chad asked

"No drug testing. Most of the beasts are drugged up. It will help you if you are injured you will not feel the full effect for a bit." San explained "Take it before the fight. If anything it will dull the pain if you die."

"How big are they?" he asked

San sighed a bit "7 to 8 feet. Luckily Crusher is one of the biggest ones but strike quickly and go for weak points. Do not hit the chest or the shoulders. Aim for the throat, tendons, neck, and eyes."

"Thanks San you are a good friend." He said giving San a hug.

"You are welcome. Do me a favor and do not die." San returned the hug a little hesitantly. "I plan on replacing a couple of small trees and I need your help."

"Depends on when I heal from my injuries." Chad said as he walked away. He spent the rest of the day working out behind the barn using various tools only stopping at Lunch time. He then spent the afternoon in the library reading on various fight tactics thanks to Seth finding the books for him. He went to bed early after dinner hoping to get a good night's sleep and luckily Jim did not disturb him.

He awoke and met Brutus where he was escorted into the back of a car with his hands and ankles chained to prevent escape. Before he left San did smuggle the painkillers to him. The journey was over an hour long and the entire time he stared out the window going over tactics on how to beat his opponent who he knew nothing about.

After they got to the arena Brutus removed the chains and pushed him out. Outside the car a crowd of people were cheering. He assumed they would prefer him to die than win seeing that some of the signs were mentioned a new fur rug or a pelt. Inside the stadium there were thousands of people. He expected an underground fight not a whole stadium worth of people. The stands were filled and in the middle was dug out to a 20 foot depression with concrete walls. Inside was blood and scratch marks all along the wall. A couple of crew members were spraying the blood from the last fight. In the locker he was given a new pair of shorts that had pads on them. It provided little protection but little is better than none. When given a glass of water Chad quickly drank the painkiller as he was escorting to the arena.

"Now introducing to his first fight. This one beat the Crusher after an altercation!" said the announcer "Now he is hungry for more. At 6 foot 1 and weighing in at 215 pounds let me introduce to you...CHAD!" the audience booed as Chad felt that the announcer was mocking him when his name was called. He swore he heard a couple of the audience members yell that he was going to die.

Getting to the edge of the arena he was gently pushed down where he landed on two feet.

"Now introducing the challenger. With a 12 and 0 record with 10 kills. At 7 foot 4 and weighing in at 350 pounds. We bring you BACKLASHER! The one who removed the skin from the backs of his opponents." The announcer said as a very large gray wolf jumped down and growled at Chad. The creature while not as massive as Crusher had more muscle and looked to be built like a tank.

"Now, hold onto your hats people. It is time for fighting! Chad and Backlasher....fight!"

No sooner than the announcer said the words fight Backlasher flung himself towards Chad. Chad dropped down and slid between his legs slashing at his ankles but missing. No sooner did he stand up Backlasher slammed into him and sent him flying several feet until he hit the ground. The painkiller was working as he barely felt it. Backlasher slashed at his chest with the claws but Chad was too fast still the claws took out some of the concrete floor.

Jumping back up to his feet Chad slashed the arm of Backlasher who laughed and slammed his fist into Chad's chest sending him into the wall. Backlasher was fast as Chad felt a dull pain on his shoulder as he realized that Backlasher's claws sliced his left shoulder. Needing to move fast he managed to dodge his second attack and used his claws to stab Backlasher in the foot hoping to hamper his poor agility even more. Backlasher howler and picked him up before slamming him into the wall. He head hit the wall hard making the world spin. Backlasher pulled him in close preparing for another slam but Chad was prepared as he slashed at Backlasher's face catching an eye. Backlasher howled out in a blood curdling pain as he held his face. Ducking down Chad slashed he ankles of his opponent making him fall to his knees. However, his opponent turned around and bite his arm hard. A sharp pain flowed through his arm that even pain killers could not dull.

"Why don't you stay down!" Chad yelled slashing at Backlasher's face some more tearing off chunks of flesh. Backlasher retaliated with a few slashes of his own catching Chad in the leg and back. After a few more slashes Backlasher covered his face as Chad started to slash at his chest spraying blood everywhere as Backlasher fell onto his back whimpering in pain. The adrenaline was flowing through him as he lifted his claws to finish the job but hesitated. Before him was not a beast but something that was scared. He body shook as people were yelling at him to finish off his opponent.

"Kill him!" Bradley yelled from the stands "Kill him!"

Backlasher looked at him with his one good eye left almost pleading him not to kill. Sighing Chad lowered his claws and fell to his knees as boos echoed through the stadium.

"Chad you fucking idiot! You are making me look bad! Kill him!" Bradley said but it fell on deaf ears as Chad saw a nearby cloth probably torn from his fight or a previous fight and picked it up and pressed it against Backlasher's face to stop the bleeding to the face.

"I am sorry." Chad said as Backlasher was crying as his breathing was getting more and more labored. "I...did not want to kill you."

Backlasher was struggling to keep his eyes open now as no help arrived. The humans intended to keep them their until someone dies. Backlasher grabbed Chad's hand but no hard.

"I...forgive you..." Backlasher said as his eye closed and his breathing stopped. Chad felt dizzy and did not know if it was from his wounds or feeling the rush of emotions as he just killed someone. He assaulted people in the past but never killed. He looked down and saw blood flowing from the wounds on him arms and legs and collapsed on the ground as a couple of security guards came into the arena to retrieve him.

The next few hours were a blur. He remembered being wheeled into the hospital and bandaged up. A few bits and pieces from that but next thing he saw was waking up in the back of the car heading back to Bradley's land. He blacked out for a moment before coming to after hearing the car door open. His arms were grabbed as he was pulled out and dragged not to the bunkhouse but to the mansion and laid down on a clean bed. He did not know what his fate is. He killed his opponent but not in the way Bradley wanted. For all he knew they separated him from the other slaves to finish him off later. For now all he wanted to do was sleep and hoped the pain goes away.
