#10 of Second Chances & New Beginings

A bit of a disagreement between Jack, Daren, and Vivian as well as more about the relationship between Jack and Vivian and Melinda and Daren, when he was human.

I slowly began to wake up as the cool light of morning crept in through the curtains and yawned. I quickly found myself nuzzling up to Vivian and found myself gently latching onto one of her, full breasts. This time when I began to nurse softly I was rewarded with a jet of warm creamy milk in my mouth and the surprise of it made me swallow and then let go before looking up to her face.

She smiled softly, "It's okay kitten, I've got milk for you now. Now please eat up." She admonished before guiding me back to the full nipple.

I relaxed and let my own feline instincts, something that I'd gotten with my new body, guide me in what to do at this moment. I was well aware that technically I was too old to nurse like this, but the feelings that I was getting from the close contact, and the warm milk filling my stomach were too pleasant to ignore.

"Ah... he's finally awake," Came Jack's voice just after I'd switched over from one side to the other.

"Yes, though he was exhausted when you brought him home last night Jack." Vivian growled softly, "No matter what he used to be he's still a cub now and he has the physical limits of a child."

I let go and licked the slightly milky drool from my lips before I spoke up, "Momma I needed to do that, and today we will have to do more... I can't leave Amanda ta be killed by those... those..."

Jack softly spoke up, "Those animals Daren?"

Vivian was looking at me rather sceptically. "Daren why does it have to be you who acts?"

"Because momma I have a rather unique set of skills that the rest of the Shadows don't have." I replied. "Each of us is on the team because we all possess unique skills that can be used to enable us to complete whatever job we're working on."

Jack nodded and spoke up, "Vivian I don't like it anymore than you do that Daren is still mixed up in the middle of this. "It's highly dangerous and there are apt to be casualties in the end, but the thing is his heart is in the right place this time. He's not doing it for his own gain, but rather to help his friends."

"Jack, that's just it, his friends aren't exactly the most outstanding members of society." Vivian objected while gently pushing me back to finish nursing.

"I know that dear, but the thing is that they were the only friends that he had when he needed somebody at his side and he'd be a poor friend indeed if he knew he could help them in their time of need."

Momma growled lightly but I could tell that she wasn't going to argue the point anymore, though I could also tell that she didn't like the events that were surrounding me but wasn't going to try and prevent me from doing what I had to. "Before we do anything of that sort though you're going to have some breakfast and, a bath, you need it."

"Vivian he should be okay for the day, after all..."

"Jack he's a cub in diapers, and he needs a bath every few days to get truly clean, I suspect that he will appreciate it." She replied to Jack while gently rubbing the back of my neck, though I could feel the tips of her finger-claws through my fur.

I did want to say something but decided that I'd wait till I was finished nursing, it was too nice to interrupt with some casual observation.

Two hours later I was back in my car seat and Jack and I were headed towards the police station once more.

"Jack, I guess you an' Momma sometimes don' agree with everything that you do?" I asked, though from what I'd already seen their arguments were nothing like those ones my mother and father had when I was a human child.

He laughed softly, "Yes, that is normal for anybody kitten, I've yet to hear of a family where there aren't any arguments, but we make a point of never going to sleep without first apologizing to each other. We both believe that it would be bad for our relationship if we ever went to sleep angry at each other." He said softly with a sigh that almost sounded like regret.

"What is it daddy?" I asked, "Sounds like there is something that you regret."

"Nothing to do with you kitten," He answered quietly and I could see a hint of distant pain in his eyes. Something was obviously bothering Jack and he was trying to hide it.

"Jack... is it your family?" I asked, I know that some would regard a child asking an adult a sensitive question like as an affront, but I was well aware that he knew that there was more to me than a simple child.

He sighed softly, "Yeah, you could say that, though to be more proper it isn't only my family but also Vivian's family. They've both disowned us due to the fact that we didn't mate inside of our own species. I guess they figured that since we couldn't reproduce naturally..."

I gave a small huff since I had some experience with what he was talking about. "They think that a human has no business mating with an anthro? That's foolish and more than a little ignorant." I told him. "Even I know that much." I finished

"How much do you know about it?" He asked bluntly and I closed my eyes recalling the one time, when I was seventeen and having a rough day.

I'd come home, after getting sacked from my most recent job and closed the flimsy door with bang to find Mel sitting in the ratty couch in the small living space sipping on a mug of tea.

"My you're tense." She'd said gently before standing and walking over to me before enfolding me in a gentle hug, which I had returned vigorously.

"Mel I can't catch a break." I told her with tears in my eyes. "I work as hard as I can and yet people only ever see my failings and lack of education. I mean I can make a computer sit up and dance a damned jig but from what I've seen nobody really cares because I don't have anything that says that I can do that."

"I know it's rough," Her rumbling alto voice said to me softly as she wound her strong fingers through my hair. "Even I've never been given much of a chance at legitimate work." She'd commented.

By that point I knew precisely what she meant. The only kind of work either of us could really manage that would allow us to pay the rent on the two-bedroom apartment that we shared was... illegitimate. I'd already made something of a name for myself with some shady characters on the quality of my skills with a computer.

Her next move surprised me as she'd rather firmly shifted one of her hands down to pick me up slightly before kissing me on the lips. I'd never call it unpleasant, indeed if there was one thing that move had done it was to get the fire started so to speak.

I quickly responded to her move, since I was a human male in my late teens I had more than a little encouragement from the hormones that came with my youth and I reciprocated her kiss with vigor and passion.

I can still recall the heat of her body as we joined as one being, though her claws hadn't been so nice on my back, the scars of which I carried up till Jack gave me a new body. Not that I'd cared in that wonderful moment of being joined with a wonderful, caring, passionate lioness who I'd come to love deeply. That was the first time, but far from the last time that we expressed our bonds so intimately, though in the past few years she'd come to distance herself from me physically. Instead, rather strangely enough, she'd taken to spending her time with Simon, who was a handsome grey mouse that was also a member of the Shadows.

"Daren?" Jack's voice stirred me from the pleasant memory and I looked to him and smiled.

"Sorry was recalling something wonderful." I told him.

"I take it you also know what a feline can be like." He said with a knowing glint in his eyes.

"You could say that," I vacillated, "It is also why I care so deeply for my comrades in the Shadows." I told him.

"Which one?" He asked, curiously.

"Melinda Hamilton," I replied, "And yes I know what you're going to say, she is over twenty years my senior but that didn't really matter to me back then."

Jack nodded with a smile, "So that's where the scars on your back came from eh?"

"Yeah, after that first time she was always more careful with her claws since she was the one who had to patch me up afterwards." I replied with my eyes still closed enjoying the recollection, not of just the event itself, but also the evening after, well after Mel had patched my back up. We'd made dinner together before once more retreating to the bedroom for more... entertainments.

"Guess that is one memory that you don't ever want to forget." Jack said softly.

"Yeah and that night I didn't dream, like I normally did. I didn't even take any of my usual cocktail to keep them at bay."

"Was she aware of your nightmares?"

"Yeah she knew," I replied sadly, "Hell, she was the person who found me what I needed to cope with those horrible dreams." I told him, "And she'd always scold me if I overdid it." I stated softly.

Jack nodded as he parked the truck, "You love her don't you Daren?"

"How could I not, she's helped me in so many ways that..." I bowed my head softly and I could feel tears dripping from my eyes.

"I understand," Came Jack's voice as he came to my side and softly undid the straps that held me in my car seat. "She's done so much for you and now you feel it is about time that you do something for her, and the rest of your crew." He stated softly while rubbing my back as I cried softly. As much as I was coming to love Jack and Vivian, I still had a special place in my heart for Melinda Hamilton, and I think I always would.
