#26 of Wayward Scale

Thanks to Sergal Queen Arts for her role as Emilia Scale

Yinglets are the brainchild of ValSalia

James saw a Dasite carrying boxes of iron on its back into the ship. Following them came a Sergal with a stack in their arms. He traveled up the stairs to the lab and said to the scientist passenger, "Ya know, I'm thinking we could probably give them the ability to build their own spaceships. What do you think?"

Emily shrugged and said, "Why not."

"So, what all should they know for now?"

"The basics."

"Like how to breath, how to get up etc.?"

"Not that basic!"

"Then, how basic?"

"Common writing, and tool crafting."

"I was actually referring to teaching them how to build their own spacecraft!"

She nodded and said, "Just enough for light travel."

James, with his arms crossed, nodded and replied, "Now, let's get some documents ready."

"Yes yes!" He watched her running back and forth, then looked to see the printer scanning paper into documents. Once during the session, Emily ran over Tacit. He stood up, shook his fist and hissed, "Watch where you're going!"

"How about you grow a few!"

Tacit hissed and ran out of the room. James approached her and asked, "What was that about?"

"I am busy!"

James sat down while Emily stood next to the printer. Once it was done, she picked up the stack and followed James outside. Once outside, James approached a local foreman and asked, "Is the shipment ready?"

The man nodded and said, "It is!"

"Good. By the way, we're leaving some documents in the parliamentary tent."

With that, he went back inside and climbed up to the bridge. Then, he went to the dash and said, "Red Comet, name some ships in search of iron."

After a moment, the AI developed a list of orders. One caught his attention, a Dasite ship fifty miles from their location. While he read the list, Emily entered the bridge, then came Tacit and Astar. James sat down and said, "Buckle up!"

He started the ship up and disengaged the landing gear. The ship darted across the slope of the mountain and dashed towards the stars. "Setting course for the DSS Orrick! We're on good terms with the Dasites, right?"

"Of course we are!"

"So, we don't need to worry."

"Until a wild whale or something attacks!"

James scoffed before he said, "I doubt we'd find those out here."

Emily shook her head and said, "Yeah I wouldn't jinx it."

Immediately, upon turning to face the screen, they could see a ship shaped like a yo-yo.

"What the?"

"That must be them."

"Why is the ship weird?"

"Because aliens."

He guided the ship towards them and said, "This is James Scale, captain of the Red Comet. We have a load of metal on board. Over."

"Over!" barked a voice on the radio, "Bring 'er in!"

He pushed the wheel forward to accelerate. Once he was close enough, he brought the ship to a halt and pressed a button to release the airlock. He was met with tan balls, which unrolled into bulky, furry creatures. He nodded and led them to the storage area.

They shuffled from the airlock to the door to the storage area. James pressed his palm to a scanner, and the door opened to reveal crate upon crate, all full of iron. The ears of one of the Dasites turned back and forth, and he said. "That'll do us well!"

"So, how much is needed?"

"This seems like it'll do."

"So, all?"

"Yes! Where shall I sign?"

James pulled out his tablet and tapped on the screen. "Right here."

The dasite used a claw to sign his name across a line. Then, James put his tablet on an empty crate and said, "Now for the hard part."

"Moving it?"

"Yep."

The Dasite shuffled around and barked, "Let's get it over with!"

Other Dasites boarded the ship. One laid down while another laid crates on their back. James looked and saw a couple others doing similar things. Emily came down from upstairs and stopped when she saw them, eyebrow raised. James approached her and shrugged.

Before they knew it, the storage area was empty. "Well, that was easy."

"It was. Too easy. What else will they want? Our souls?"

"Who knows? I was only one of them once."

"Why not do it again?"

"Never had a reason to."

"Then, find one! We need to learn more about them!"

"We could ask the warden if there's a job with them."

"Let's do that!"

"Red Comet, set course for MORPH station!"

While the AI was processing the request, James went back up to the bridge. He took his seat while Emily took hers. He took the wheel and looked at the GPS. Upon finding that they were a lightyear away, he turned around and called out, "Hyperspeeed, anyone?"

"Why not!"

With that, James punched a button and sat back. He looked to his left to see Tacit sinking in his seat. He shut his eyes as the ship rocketed into lightspeed. When he opened his eyes, he saw the station.

"We can look."

Everyone opened their eyes. Emily rubbed hers while James took the controls and slowed the ship. "We almost there yet," she asked.

"Yep."

"Oh finally!"

He lined up airlocks before stopping the ship. Then, he stood up and went back downstairs. He stopped and turned around. "Ouch!"

"What was that?"

"I don't know, I just tripped!"

"You alright?"

"Yeah, I'll live."

"Okay."

Once they entered the station, they were greeted by two guards who scanned both of them. "They're clear."

"To the warden's office."

"Yes yes!"

Emily ran into there with James in tow. "We need work!" barked Emily.

James stopped and wrenched his arm from her grip. He looked at the warden and said, "What she said. Is there anything that involves the Dasites?"

"We do have a few jobs. What were ya two looking for in particular?"

"Just something so that we'd be able to become familiar with them."

"Ah yes, we do have something for you."

"What would that be?"

"We need you to go under cover, they stole our drug supply!"

"What?"

"You heard me."

"And, I just sold some iron to one of their ships!"

"No, it's only a gang."

"Oh. So, what's the plan? Or, is there a plan?"

"No not really."

"Any ideas?"

The warden shrugged and suggested, "Work it out as you all go."

James took a deep breath and said, "Okay, okay. So, what gender would work best?"

"Males. Unless you want to be female."

James shrugged and said, "Either or."

The warden handed a document to him, and he subsequently asked, "What's this?"

"A terms and agreement. Something happens too you two it's your own faults."

"Okay."

For a moment, James patted himself before he asked, "Uh, anyone got a pen?"

The warden reached in his desk and handed one over. "Thanks."

He signed his name and handed the document back. "To the clinic?"

"To the clinic!"

James nodded to the warden and left the office, with Emily in tow. They went to the clinic, and James said, "Dasites."

The doctor pointed to a chair, and they both sat down. He exposed his arm as one of the attendants approached with a syringe. He could feel the needle entering his skin, the fluid entering his bloodstream. After the needle was removed, James looked his hands, which had become thin and Scaly. He looked at Emily, who was growing a shell. "How am I coming?"

"Looking better than me. At least you aren't dark colored*

"I'm not?"

"No, you arent."

Then, James could feel his skin going through a drastic alteration as a faceplate grew in. "Looking good."

"You're not so bad as well."

"On a scale from one to ten, where am I?"

"A six."

"And you uh, probably five or six."

"So we are about even."

"Yep."

With that, Emily got up and waddled out of the room, followed by James. "This feels weird. My legs...."

"What about them?"

"So wobbly."

"Do you know which gender you were injected with?"

"No, no I dont.

"We could check."

James got on his hands and knees and looked up. Emily did the exact same. They immediately pressed noses. "So, who's standing up first," asked James.

"You!"

James nodded and stood up. "You know what, we can check that later."

"Yeah, let's go before my legs break!"

James balled up and rolled towards a small group. He unrolled on his back and looked up at them. "I should probably learn how to do that."

Emily tried rolling, only to veer out of control. She bumped a wall before unrolling, and James gestured and called, "You alright there?"

She gave two thumbs up and replied, "Yeah, I'm great."

"Maybe we should walk to the ship."

"Yeah let us do that or we are going to die."

"Or hit our heads."

James kept jumping all over his seat trying to find a position that worked. Emily, on the other hand, had tied herself to the floor "Why did you do that," asked James.

"I already gave up. I can't sit on a seat."

"Neither do I."

"Than do what I have!"

He sighed and rolled off his seat. He balled up and rolled around the room bumping into chairs and machines as if he were in a game of pinball. One time, he rolled over Tacit. Tacit was quick to leave the room after both of them rolled over him. There was a pop as their shells bumped, and they unrolled. James turned his nose to face her, facing upside down, and said, "I think I've got an idea."

"You do?"

"Yeah, we could try to use our tails to steer. By that, I mean pushing with our tails."

James tucked his head in and continued rolling. This time, he tried pushing in certain directions with his tail. This time, he bumped into much less than before. "Oh, this is much better!"

He unrolled and looked up at the screen. "We're getting there."

James took to the controls and steered the ship into the planet's atmosphere, this time standing instead of sitting. Once they entered, he searched for a place to land. He drove the ship towards a mountain and landed at the peak. Then, he balled once again and rolled into the hall.

He bounced down the stairs. One time, he yelped and unrolled on his back at the base of the steps. He put a hand to his forehead before he was met with the laughter of Emily. "What're you laughing at?"

"Oh, nothing."

He stood up and headed towards the airlock. He balled and rolled outside, with her in tow. He only stopped when he felt an impact. "Ow! What the?"

He unrolled on his back and looked up. There, before him, stood a tree with leaves floating down. He balled and rolled a couple feet before unrolling on his belly and pushing himself up.

Finally, after two days, they managed to find a series of domes. "This a settlement," asked Emily.

"Looks like it."

"Kinda ugly."

"Well, they are aliens."

"I know that!"

Emily ran through an entrance, followed by James. She rolled down stairs while James hobbled. After she crashed through a door, it shut on James, and he slowly opened it. He saw her unroll on her belly before standing up. He looked past her at the inhabitants, mostly seeming to be particularly large males. One of them rolled towards them and said, "Ennot ulok ark?"

"Well, I do not know Dasite. I'm sorry, we do not speak your language. We need to learn Dasite, or get something to translate. Since we don't know how to speak the language or know how to tell the structures apart, that leaves us with one option."

"Find one anyhow or get a translation unit?"

"Translation unit."

"Now where to get one?"

"We'll have to find someone selling them."

With that, Emily tried to run up, while James rolled. Eventually, she decided to roll as well, all the way outside. "See anything?"

"Not yet!"

"Can you see period while we're doing this?"

"No!"

With that, both of them unrolled and flew several feet before landing on their backs and spinning like tops. One time during the spinning, their heads collided. Finally, some Dasites reached for their tails in an attempt to stop them from spinning. With their help, they both slowed to a stop. The one assisting James pushed him on his feet, and he subsequently looked down and vomited. "You two alright?"

James looked up and, before he could say anything, immediately noticed something in the Dasite's ear. "Not exactly. Uh, what's that in your ear?"

"Oh, that? Translating unit."

"Where could we find some?"

The Dasite backed towards a stall and said, "It just so happens that I have extras."

"Really?"

"Of course, we could tell you two aren't from around here."

"By the way, do you think you could direct us to whoever's in charge?"

"Possibly."

The two of them approached the stall, which was covered with small boxes. The Dasite opened the box revealing a few small devices. Emily grabbed one, and James another. Emily installed hers, and James looked at her and said, "Sprechen zhe Deutsch," to test the device.

She gave a thumb up, and then, he stuck his translator in his ear. "Say something in another language."

"Ciao, come stai?"

"Very good, thank you."

"That worked?"

"Yep."

"Okay, then we've got this!"

"Now, to meet whoever's in charge."

He looked at the native Dasites and said, "Lead the way."

Four Dasites rolled towards the largest of the domes in the area. A hole opened in the wall allowing them to roll through. One at a time, they unrolled before row of older Dasites. "Thank you, we'll take it from here," said James.

He approached the counsel and went down on his hands and knees. Once the other Dasites left, he stood up and said, "James Scale, captain of the Red Comet, and member of MORPH. I hear there's been some issues with a crime syndicate. Do you gentlemen know of them?"

"No, but we want to investigate."

"So do I. Do we have any possible gangsters?"

"Why yes."

"Who are they?"

"Deejeg," grunted one of the elders. "One of our suspects."

With that, Emily grabbed James, and when he questioned, she said, "You're coming along!"

"Hang on, so, do the outback balls have their own form of prostitute?"

Outback ball was the best name he could come up with since he didn't know whether they referred themselves to their race or their individual groups. Emily stopped, produced her tablet and did a quick search. He looked at the counsel and said, "The mafia can wait, right?"

He looked over Emily's shoulder and saw there were Dasite prostitutes. "Okay, think you could copy that?"

"That I can."

"Good, maybe I could as well."

He watched as Emily pointed the device's scanner at hersenf, and was reshaped and altered to resemble the picture. Then, she handed it over as he said, "A spitting image."

He chose a picture and aimed the printer at himself. A moment after, he asked, "How do I look?"

"Better."

With that, Emily walked away, followed by James. Along the way, they did another search, which told them that the syndicate was holed up at a cave. No sooner did they show up at the cave than they were approached by a guard. "Who are you?"

"Ellie!"

"And uh..."

"Never mind, come on in."

The guard stepped aside, and Emily went inside, followed by James. This place was much more crude than the hall. In no time, they were surrounded by Dasites. Some of them had scars while others were painted.

"Uh, we were-"

"Say no more. Meet us in the bedroom, and we can talk."

Emily gulped and followed one of the Dasites to another room. James, however, was dragged.
