[Authors Notes. This is a work of fiction. This idea/characters were created way back in the early 2000s. Characters/Plot by me! I was still very much a high school student and into the furry fandom. I still am honestly, just not super active in it right now. But this has been sitting around on my old laptop until recently. Its still bare bones but with a little bit of flesh on them. Most likely spelling errors and grammar. Updates will be sporadic as I use my Samsung Note 8 phone to write. I'm open to constructive comments and suggestions. Please let me know how this story is going so far! Things will probably change, like the Main Title, etc. But I hope you enjoy and stick around!]

Chapter One

Not many trains ran so late to Zoo-York save for a couple which were solely for those who couldn't pay much or not at all. These trains stopped on the East Side of the city, a dark, rough and very dangerous place to be even during daylight. It was home to mostly predators. But the doe wasn't too worried about that, her sister had made arrangements for her to have a service van waiting for her at the station to delivered to her place on the West side where she lived in a strictly herbivore community complex. So she wouldn't have to hang around and possibly have a run in with some unsavoury carnivore or more.

A certain passenger sitting across from her was more then enough for her nerves to handle. Her big brown eyes glanced upwards, stealing a quick look at the silent black jackal. She had been doing that going on two and after hours. One of her large ears flicked as a slight tremble of fear went through her body. It appeared that the jackal was awake.

When the jackal had boarded the train, at a small stop in some small town, the name she couldn't recall now, his appearance alone had caused her prey instincts to kick into overdrive. He was well built mostly lean muscle, broad chest and shoulders that tapered to his hips. And he was very tall. He stood around six feet unless you counted his equally tall pointed ears too, it would be closer to seven feet. His fur was smooth and a matte black. A pointy nose twitched a couple times on a long tapered muzzle. He had long silky black hair pulled in a low ponytail that hung to just above his whip like tail but was dressed rather plainly, a pair of dark jeans and what appeared to be a grey shirt under a leather black jacket. He wasn't alone too.

Just steps behind him came another predator, a cheetah, although much smaller and much younger looking. She was thin, pale yellow with faint black/brown spots, bright green eyes and a head of messy curly brown hair. She was dressed in jeans too and a hooded pull over and a bomber style jacket with some sport logo on the sleeves and front, all her clothing looked a size two larger then what would have fit her properly and she also carried a heavy looking backpack.

The jackal stood there in the aisle at first, a tall and ominous black figure. His eyes were sharp and yellow in colour and at first seemed to glow as he slowly moved his head around, probably looking for a place to sit. The cart was empty of passengers save for her, the lonely doe, and she started praying inwardly that he wouldn't choose to sit close to her. But that proved to be in vain as the jackal taking a hold of the jacket collar of the cheetah and somewhat dragged her over and sat her down on the bench right across from her before sitting down too.

She was seated on the left side of the cart and they the right side. It took every ounce of self-control the doe had to not leap up and run screaming from them. She just sat quietly trembling like a leaf. Since a young fawn she had heard many and often grisly detailed stories of lone prey who when traveling and taking a late night train were attacked and eaten by predators who made the trains and its stop stations their hunting grounds. She prayed again that this wasn't one of the stories about to come true. But it quickly became clear to her that the two predators weren't interested in her in fact they acted like she didn't even exist to them, despite the two foot space between them.

The cheetah after being somewhat thrust down into her seat by the jackal quickly went about removing her backpack from behind her, pulled it out and to her right side and then pushed it off the seat onto the floor where it landed with a loud, hard thump. The jackal who was sitting on her left side gave a rumbling growl but said nothing. The cheetah didn't seem fazed by it one bit and yawned and rubbed her eyes. The doe then noticed how exhausted the cheetah looked and how young, she looked around 12 years old. She probably was a tiny fluffy cub only a couple years ago. The jackal on the other hand looked like he was in his late 30s or early 40s. Despite being predators the doe couldn't believe that these two were in any way related to each other.

What was a young feline youngster doing with this black canine? The doe wondered. A small worried lump formed in her, this didn't seem right at all.

The cheetah turned and looked upwards to the jackal and opened her mouth to speak.

"So how long until we get to Zoo-Yorm?"

At the cheetah's voice the doe's ears perked up. She was so young sounding. Her voice was soft and sweet but strained. Like she hadn't slept in a few days. The jackal didn't look back her, his right ear did twitch which meant he had heard her question.

"Two maybe three hours at most."

The jackal's voice was deep with a slight roughness to the end. Just that short sentence was enough to send a cold shiver up the doe's back and she didn't try to hid it.

The two predators didn't speak again for an hour. The cheetah had begun to fall asleep. She often awoke when her head bumped against the side of the jackal who sat there stiffly with arms crossed his chest. He hadn't moved once upon sitting down. The cheetah after a few more bumps against the jackel's side yawned and then removed her bomber jacket. She bundled it up into a ball, a makeshift pillow and then placed in on the jackal's lap. She then pulled up her legs and stretched them out across the bench seat as she laid down, her head resting on her jacket on his lap. She yawned again and muttered.

"I'm going to sleep for a bit OK?"

The cheetah was fast asleep in moments. The jackal sat there quietly, unmoved. He remained that way for a few minutes before moving his arms down. His right one moving to rest on the cheetah's side and the left one moved to stroke her head and its messy brown curls. The left arm's motion appeared gentle but it hitched and jerked a lot. Something was wrong with it. It was odd. Very unnatural.

The doe herself had fallen asleep not soon after, she had been traveling for a couple days too. She jerked awake a few hours later when the train's automatic notification sounded that Zoo-York was only 10 minutes away and for passengers to get ready. She glanced at the two predators. They both appeared asleep. She glanced down at her watch then up at them again. They were still asleep. It was now or never. She needed to be the first one out. The doe stood up, grabbed her travel bag which she had on the floor behind her feet and gripping her purse to her chest tightly hurried to the door. Upon reaching it she glanced behind her and stiffened. The jackal's eyes had been closed but they both snapped wide open. His eyes again seemed to glow

ZOO-YORK EAST ST.PAUL STATION

The train's automated notification sounded loudly. The doe waited, nervously and intensely listening for the train to start slowing down. It soon did but not that much. It pulled into the underground station, traveling for a few more minutes before slowing down then coming to stop with a loud hiss and squealing of brakes. She waited for the entrance/exit signs above the doors to light up. She almost felt like she going panic. As she waited she saw movement in the corner of her eye, she turned her head and saw the jackal was trying to rouse the sleeping cheetah. Whl appeared to be struggling to wake up. The signs then lit up and the doors opened with a dinging sound. The doe looked away and relief washed over her as she stepped through and out into the station platform. At last it was all over.

The station, it was empty save for the scents of various creatures that had come through during the day hours, which still hung in the air along with train fumes and other unsavory scents. She quickly saw a some stairs just a few feet away which led up to the upper level of the station and to the front entrance where outside in the street would be a waiting van.

The doe couldn't wait to see her sister and her family. And to tell her about her nerve-wracking trip. Next time she would just pay for a ticket on one of the major train lines instead of trying to save money and taking a sketchy midnight one. She considered herself lucky to have made it here. Especially after that train ride.

As the doe stepped through the stations front entrance doors and into the chilly dark air, all her relief drained out of her in an instant. There was no van. The dimly lit streets everywhere were empty. She looked around fear growing quickly up inside her. She was all alone.

No, there across the street was a group of four persons. The doe's instincts sounded again, telling her leave now. She was in danger! But before she could even turn to go back inside the station, the four persons had crossed the street and surrounded her. The doe felt herself shrink and was starting to shake, her large ears had fallen limp to the sides of her head and she felt tears forming in the corners of her eyes. They were all predators. And one a wolf with yellowed fangs stepped forward and growled.

"Well well look at this, fellas. Some freshly delivered meat, just for us."
