Undying Fire
This is the first serious poem i ever wrote. Originally for school, i was very serious about doing a good job. I had been reading The Best of James Herriot, and he mentions the Saltersgate Inn in Yorkshire, whose fireplace is reputedly haunted and said to have been burning continuously for about 200 years. Good poem material. I sat down and listened to the first minute or so of "Journeys in the Dark" from an orchestral Lord of the Rings Suite over and over again for inspiration. I wrote it all in one shot. It was published in A Celebration of Young Poets- West Fall 2005. Rights remain with me of course, no plagiarizing!
** Undying Fire**
** By Brett**
In a deep dark room with an ancient fire
That smokes and burns like a funeral pyre,
By misty wood and clovered lane
The gargoyles watch with eyes aflame.
A bastion of warmth in the purple moor
The bronzen wolf keeps guard the door.
Like witches cluster cauldrons black
Its thatched broom propped at its back.
Pewter plates reflect the blaze
While just below the goblins gaze.
And in this fire a darkness bleeds
It burns and moves and twists and breathes.
It lives in every cavern deep
And mountain old, and castle keep.
The hearths of kings have whispered tales
To the sentry fires on wilderness trails.
The tales have returned to where they had been
To the fireplace of a roadside inn.
By the misty woods and the clovered lane
Where the gargoyles watch with eyes aflame.
